If I had spent even half that on a new car and it had quality control issues, I'd be far from impressed. I don't call 25k cheap. I wouldn't waste my money. Cars in my opinion are just stressful money pits.
Glad I could help. As I say the cars aren’t bad for money you pay, its just the after sales care is not there yet. Good luck with what ever you decide to do…
"it's a very cheap car" no it's not. not in the slightest. it's cheap for an electric car. but £26k is still not cheap by any means. It's seems the biggest issue with MG4 is MG themselves. horrific dealerships. I considered this car but not a chance. too many horror stories. I think i'm going to go for a renault megane e-tech instead.
You should have rejected it. I did with mine, purchased October 2022 and numerous faults including leak and door handles plus 12v charging system. They had it for a month after ownership of just 2 days for the leak. Also had infotainment issues. Several trips to dealer enough was enough i rejected car, it had 6000 miles and I got all of my money back. Consumer rights act on your side.
Hi Ray, I did try that discovering that option too but in my case I wasn’t even getting anywhere speaking or even booking an appointment with the dealer or the service team, let alone them acknowledging the issues. It was more down to my family's safety than anything else. I am glad at least yours your sorted and you got your money back.. 😊
@@andybalfour1654 Hey Andy, I remember you from the Facebook MG4 group. I think you were having a lot of issues with yours and going to reject it? Did you manage to hand it back?
In my experience people always seem to have these sort of issues with early production batches, regardless of the model or brand. Even Tesla are known for it. Its the risk you take for being one of the first people to own one.
I had one of the first batch of fifty right hand drive BMW E46s made. I didn't have a single problem with it over the following five years. The guy that bought it from me ran it for another thirteen years with minimal parts needing replacement. That was one well screwed together motor. The only new car( of six) that I've owned from new that has had problems during the first few years was a Renault.
@@musclerentbut mg is not popular in China. all MG cars don't sell well in China. Chinese make fun of MG brand. 上修飞机下修表,唯有名爵修不好。means Even if you can repair airplanes in the sky and watches on the ground, you cannot repair MG cars
@jt-ttt SAIC, the owners of MG have been selling the MG branded cars all over the world and in increasing numbers. They are a "budget brand," but they are reliable and increasing on par with the best. Backed with a 7 year warranty, they are reliable cars, if not especially interesting. Maybe you are thinking about MG cars from the 1970's?
MG rave about the 7 year warranty but when I looked at the MG ZS EV warranty in detail, some parts were only warranted for 12 months and most parts for only 24 months, only the battery was warrantied for 7 years. To me that proves that even they have little confidence in their products and I bought from a different maker.
That’s exactly my point. My seats had started to deteriorate within 2000 miles of driving and I was told that this is normal wear and tear also, seats are only covered for the first 12 months. Central rattle wasnt loud enough to be covered under the warranty Oil leak was covered under the warranty but they had no solution for it other than just keep topping up the oil level
@@Letstalkelectric I know this is a year ago but I tried to warn people of all this and got kicked off the MG4 Facebook group lol 😆 I'm so glad we didn't buy one and got our deposit back and yes the seats are terrible however some people have had them for over a year and the seats haven't deteriorated so I'm guessing if your light and skinny like in china where it's built it isn't a problem ! What I find funny is that a bloke on the larger side did a 3 hour drive in this car with those same seats and said they where really comfortable and supportive but it was a pre release video review so they were in MG's pocket obviously 😔
@@oliverskinner8962 I am 80kg and so far so good, although I don't drive far, just daily trips around the town and the commute to work approx. 40 miles. The seats are very comfortable compared to my previous car which was an i3. Meanwhile, you would be surprised at the size of the wealthier Chinese people. We had a bloke at work who was 6 ft tall and built like a bull.
@@82vitt I've been in an i3 and found the seats comfy enough, I guess I prefer seats a little on the firmer side. Most people don't keep their car long enough to notice things like seat degradation but on my first ever car there was quite a big difference between the drivers seat and the passengers seat on a 10 year old car. The fact some people are complaining about seat degradation before a year has passed only goes to show this car is not even fit for purpose. I'd rather buy a car from India than China !
If your 7 year guarantee means they'll top up the oil every 5 visits whilst saying it's bone dry, it's worth less than the paper it's printed on. Imagine you had an immediate threat to your safety (although an oil leak in the wrong place can fry your car), you'd be out of a car for half a year just waiting for the appointment. Doesn't matter how cheap it is, with that level of service it's a very expensive brick.
My experience with my local dealer was very different. There was a loud wind noise issue with the drivers door window and my dealer dealt with it well. After a couple of visits to them to have it fixed to no avail they took it in for a week and as a last resort changed the door for a new one. Problem solved. It took four months because of delays getting parts from China and delays getting MG's approval, but the car is good now thanks to my dealers persistence. Ive previously had poor customer care from VW and Skoda dealers driving me to change cars, but after your experience I'm crossing my fingers nothing goes wrong with my MG4 anytime soon.
Thanks for sharing your story. I have got the standard range car, it was the second batch delivered to me in December and I have had non of the car issues that you have had BUT. The dealership experience when collecting the car was really poor. I ordered several things when buying the car one of which was tinted rear glass, the car had no tinted glass. I had given the dealership 5 days to prep the car and nothing had been done to put in the extras for my collection. I'd asked for the seat treatment and was only given the pack and window label when I queried it on a follow up visit. I was assured that the treatment had been done but am sceptical. It took two visits to get a refund on the tinted glass I'd payed for in the order. Luckily my car was in the second batch , I took delivery in December last year. I have had none of the problems you have had and am loathed to take it back to the dealership for any work/updates. I bought the car on PCP so am with it good or bad for four years. So far the car has been great but the dealership performance and the "7 year warranty" do worry me.
Sad to hear that you had such a bad experience. Thanks for your video. . . I am sure that it will be helpful for some folks who are considering their next car.
Very sorry to hear about the faults. I got my MG4 SE long range, and it's been perfect for the 3 weeks I've had it. This may be due to it being a later example (production date), so none of the issues mentioned here or on the forums (touch wood). The only concern is that MG has scored poorly in regards to warranty n aftersale support vs. the likes of Kia.
You said you felt you were being treated poorly but by continuinally staying calm you allowed this. You accepted scratches on a brand new car when you went back to pick it up after it was dented. Did you consider rejecting the car because I think that would have been the right thing too do
You did the right thing. My MG 4 has been in the workshop for 5 months now, MG does not respond to anything. With me the whole thing is in Germany, but I share and feel your MG experience 100%.
I feel you and sorry for your trouble. I've had a lot of problems with my MG4 Trophy. In almost 37 days of ownership, the car spent 25 days at the service centre. That's when I realized I'm into a massive problem with the car so I returned it. I'm very happy now. Thank you for the video
Got the 12V battery low. Was told as long as the car is starting, there was nothing to worry about. And I shouldn't worry, as I have free breakdown assitance.
Citroen have announced the eC3 18,200 euro after the 5,000 grant. I live in France, Citroen dealers on every corner. I made my order today for the eC3 Max 2,000 euro plus.
Good review but not suprising. MG had a massive exodus of staff from aftersales a couple of years ago and tbh their approach as a company has always been one of shift the cars then forget about it. The company has not invested in afteersales and use 3rd party companies with unskilled staff to cover phones so you never feel like you're getting anywhere when dealing with them. Spent many years working for MG and the feedback from customers was always how poor the dealer network is and how poor support from MG is.
Hi, thanks for the comment. Dont get me wrong, they are good cars but things go in the opposite direction incase you require after sales support. Many great cars are out there now especially the used market is looking brilliant. Good luck with your car shopping 👍👍
Thank you for sharing your experience. I was thinking about getting one but now I won’t. I had similar service issues with Sytner BMW Ascot too with my ALPINA DX3 and it was so ridiculous that I sold the car.
I think you did the right thing. Dealing with MG was a right pain. I have dealt with Sytner Ascot myself for my BMW and they were horrible. I hope you have a pleasant experience with what ever you decide to buy.. 👍👍
@@Letstalkelectric yes Sytner’s business practice is a bit doggy. They send their buyers to trash the residual value of Alpina cars when they themselves are the exclusive distributor. I urge all British motorists to be careful when dealing with Sytner.
Hi Tom, yes there is certainly an explanation for it, I had uploaded the video and later realised there is no point in sharing something which would cause any unrest amongst the new potential buyers as this was my experience ONLY. In short I just wanted to share the positive things about the MG4, so I had just made it private (as youtube algorithms dont like if any video is deleted). I was being asked on facebook/instagram and MG forum so many times for the reasons why I sold my car and requested that I should share my thoughts and experiences as this could help people in making an informed decision. That was the reason I had decided to bring the video back. This was the only reason why the video disappeared and came back. Hope this helps. 🙂
At last, someone who's honest about the build quality and support of these PRC cars. It's my opinion that Chinese motorbikes, scooters and cars etc have great showroom appeal. They can look all glitzy in the showroom and are often festooned with gadgets but look deeper and you find they are not as well made as you might like. As an example, I went to view a 125cc scooter close to me. It was under 2 years and had been garaged from new with under 1,000 miles on the clock. It looked great, that was until you looked underneath. There was rust everywhere, paint was peeling off of the crankcase, the brake callipers looked tired as did most of the pipework, it looked more like a 30k mile 5 year old bike. The guy offered it to me at a greatly reduced price but I walked away and bought a Honda. I think your experience is exactly what I would expect from a cheap Chinese car. As the saying goes, buy cheap, buy twice.
SPOT ON!! I fell for the “cheap” appeal. They say if it is too good to be true then probably it isnt true. The green line under the MG4 Electric badge had started to peel off with in 3 months and MG wasnt going to do anything about it. Very ki or thing but I got a flavour of the things which were coming my way. I am too poor to buy cheap.
Never heard that expression before but I will use it in the future. Here's the thing. I have had many a new car in my time, Audi's, VW's, Mazda's and Vauxhalls. In the main they have all been great but these days I am not turned on by the latest & greatest. Of the 5 cars at our home the oldest is 35 years and the youngest 16. They are all immaculate and driving perfectly plus I love the shape of older cars. These are cars I really want to own, cars which passed me by first time around... They lost their depreciation long ago but surprise, surprise, people seem to think we are living the life. Strangely, I like the new Volvo XC30, that was until I found out it's made in China.. so that's a non starter. China & Volvo should never appear in the same sentence.
@@richardstamper5630 hahah. Class “china and Volvo should never appear in the same sentence”. Unfortunately, thats the reality these days. MINI is Ora Cat underneath, Volvo and Smart are Geely under the skin.
Great video! I was contemplating on getting this but I think I will steer clear! Also, while watching the video, I realised I have seen that background before on a call at my workplace 🤣
I think you made the right choice. MGs after sales can be a bit painful to deal with. Wow, have you seen that background before? We live in a small world 😃
Thank you for this information. Your experience must of been exhausting and took you extra effort to share this with us on TH-cam when you probably really wanted to put this all behind you.
Thanks for doing this video, nothing but good reviews on TH-cam. I got my MG4 in November and it does drive me crazy sometimes. Its triggered the emergency brake for no reason 3 times and when I turn the setting off it turns itself back on. The lane assist keeps steering me into other cars and again, this setting keeps turning back on too. The app doesn’t always connect to the car either so can’t always pre-heat it. I’ve also got the wind noise issue on the driver side to sort out, my dealer always seems very busy so I know this will take a while to resolve. I always get auto-hold errors on the dash too which just go away. Luckily they sorted the oil issue before I got the car but that did cause a delay in when I got to pick it up. Great car but it’s not the perfect car everyone makes it out to be!!
Completely agree with you.. I had exactly those issues plus a few major ones. App connection was a real pain in the neck. It would even log me off completely randomly. The main issue is that the dealers dont seem to even register these issues as issues. As I said these are great value cars as far as you dont have to deal with the dealer/service teams. Good luck with yours and I hope you keep enjoying your car 👍👍
Thanks for your honest post I was one of the people who asked you why you got rid of it .I can understand now why .I only recently got my 4 and have been testing it out on a daily basis so far so good .But who knows what is around the corner I just hope I have better luck than you did . All the best on your new cars hope they work out a lot better than the MG 4 for you .
Thanks for your video,i was seriously thinking of this car but your experience has changed my mind, ive always been with fiat and their customer service have always been exceptional, think i might go for the fiat 600 now,i know a lot more cash but i suppose you get what you pay for.
Hi, glad ai could help. I had just learned the hard way. I have had 3 fiats in the past and the experience has nothing but amazing with them. Fiat 600 is a great car. Good luck with your purchase 👍👍
Timely post as this model is about to go on sale in Australia. It sounds to me your issues are compounded by a poor dealer experience (or the dealer themselves aren’t across the support process) coupled with a 1st gen of a new vehicle model. I am contemplating an EV and your video has been hugely helpful, thanks!
Id say the problem is the dealers get no response from manufacturer so they can't touch the car or give a satisfactory reply. Most dealers have other brands and I would imagine the experience may be different.
I had the exact same UK experience/faults, bought mine in the November and sold it in July, lost confidence in the car, the dealer and the brand. The car obviously wasn't tested properly prior to launch, maybe things have improved but early buyers paid a dear price for this. I live in a rural area and and lane assist was one of the worst things about it, it defaults to on every time you start the car, if you forget to turn it off before driving it reminds you it's on by trying to violently drive you into the nearest hedge. Things may be different now but during my ownership the dealer informed me this could not be changed. Like yourself i lost a lot of money but it came to the point that my wife and i had lost complete confidence in the car.
I can completely relate to each and every word you have mentioned. I have completely lost faith in the brand. Dealers take no pride in selling MG. They simply dont want to know once you drive off the car from their forecourt. I have friends whom have recently bought MG4 and they are having similar issues with the car/brand and the dealers. I am so clad I have nothing to do with it anymore. I had never felt safe driving that car. Stay safe…
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve had mine ordered mid-December and was released from the factory end of Feb. Now it’s on its way to the UK. I ordered the Trophy through salary sacrifice. Looking at this video, I am a little worried to say the least 😅…would you say because your car was one of the first production cars that a lot of faults were developed? I don’t know how safe I’ll be 😅…
Hi Fiaz, thanks for the comment. As I said, last thing I want to do is to scare people off their decision. I would like to think that you have a point regarding these early batch cars however, one of my friends had recently picked up him trophy and the dealer had to cancel his delivery as they had discovered an oil leak during the PDI. My issue is that MG still doesnt know the fix for it and still trying to resolve in stages hoping that something will fix. I think I fell for the cheap price tag and the car was readily available. I learnt my lesson the hard way. However, I still know people who have been driving MG4 without any issues. I would just suggest if you could do some research around the MG’s service department around you, should something goes wrong. I wish you all the best
Do you think buying a demo would mitigate most of these risks I suppose the demo car would have 1000-2000 kms on it before the dealer sells it and these issues are taken care off?
Hi. Not too sure about it as the car was absolutely faultless until the first 5k miles. Moreover, the fact is that the dealer/service wasn’t competent enough to identify the issue let alone fix it. 😊
Car was sold to the MG dealer (full history). They were aware of all the defects with that car. I wasnt intending to ask the dealer to share the buyers details so that I could personally go and tell them everything. Its dealers job, not mine
I’m sorry to hear you’ve had such a horrible experience. There have been quite a few owners in your situation, especially early adopters. If you’d had decent dealership support then things might have been different, but with so many faults and the lack of support I think you did the right thing parting with it. Edited to say, I’ve had a great experience with my MG4 SE LR.
I am really glad you are having a great time with yours. I was a little sad to see it go as I wanted to keep it for a long time but unfortunately, due to all these issues I had to let it go..

Exactly what oil was leaking? Never heard of this on an EV before. I bought a Hyundai Kona in 2019, no problems or oil change for 3,5 years, electric motors don’t use oil.
I was ignorant like you and didnt think of it when I had seen oil patches on my driveway. MG4 has a reduction gearbox which sits between the motor and the axle, thats where the leake was. 1000s of early cars were impacted with it and MG had no fix for that apart from topping up oil levels.

This is not a phantom issue it happens on lots of the cars, mine has done it when the system was supposedly switched off, I have spoken to mguk and their answer is if they change it they will lose their ncap 5 star "safety rating" , same with the random lane keeping software that drives the car into the kerb and follows imagined lines in the road .

Absolutely, I have waited longer for my BMW and MINI fixes in the past however, I was kept up to date, was given a courtesy car to keep me moving. MG4 had licked my family in, had a leaky differential motor, buggy software which auto braked the car 3 times on a busy A roads and MG wouldnt do anything to fix thise issues let alone booking the car in. They even told AA not to bring the car in for another 4 months due to no technician available to look at the car.

I wish I had seen this before I bought my MG4. Had 3 months of trouble free motoring covering 2k miles and then it stopped charging from my wall charger and granny lead. Had to wait a month for a dealer appointment and could only rapid charge during that time at 85p per kwh. Dealer fobbed me off on first visit saying a software update had fixed it. Got home and it was the same. Its now been in the dealer for going on 7 weeks and trying to get any sense from them is impossible. It is pretty obvious they have massive supply chain issues and lack of trained techs to fix them. I am now contemplating the same as you.
Hi there, I am very sorry to hear that. I had similar treatment as you and I can totally understand your frustration. 7 weeks is a very long time for them to respond/resolve. Have you tried speaking to the dealer about the rejection. I know what the answer is going to be but worth a try and you may want to escalate it to MG UK and express your concern. I see exactly what you mean. The software is a real step down. I had issues with the screen going black while driving. Bluetooth required connecting every time I’d get in. No drivers memory function. I was promised that OTA updates will be coming by Jan 23 and I still see nothing on that. A bug update just removed the external temp reading and MG couldn’t do anything to bring that back. Internal temp wasnt calibrated and even at 28 deg heater the cabin will feel cold. Well the list goes on
Had my MG4 SR for 6 months now, not a single issue, I’m very happy with my purchase. Sorry to hear your problems I guess a certain number of any type & manufacture of car will & can have issues.

Much appreciated. You are correct, I just fell for the media hype and went for the MG4. I am very happy with my Tesla now. May I ask which EV did you end up going for?
I purchased a Level 2 MINI EV March 2023, a bit pricey, supplied with 7kw home charger (fitted), 2m portable dual cable, 5m 220v granny charger and car care products. I upgraded the home charger to 7m tethered charger and my home electrics and bonding needed upgrading. I also had to purchase a smart phone for the car app.. It's a very agreeable little town car. Dogs (3), golf clubs etc. fit when rear seats drop. Maybe I’m in denial, having received my mg4 last march. But it seems to me you had some kind of a pre series vehicle, and most of all an awful awful dealer
Correct there, the issue was even getting a response from MG too. Dealers aren’t taking any interest in family's safety at all. I mean, lying about doing a safety patch was just crazy.
I've seen odd MG4 issues mentioned on other forums too. The MG5 looks to be a better proposition. There's a guy on TH-cam who works for a company who run several MG5's, one of which has clocked up 70k miles in 18 months, with hardly any trouble at all. The experiences with the other MG5's the company have, also seem positive. This may be down to the fact that in some Asian markets, the MG5 is still ICE powered, and most of the car is known and proven. The MG4 is 100% new from the ground up. And, as the old adage goes, pioneers sometimes ended up with arrows in their ass.......It's unfortunate you had such an awful experience. It really shouldn't happen today.
eniro and koni both have motor reduction gearbox problems. We returned a kona with the ptoblem thinking it was a one-off but found another that we test drove also had the early signs. Some friends of ours also traded theirs in for the same issue. Google 'wheel of fortune noise' and you'll find many cases where Kia are walking away from the problem until it totally fails in the hope it will be out of warranty by then.
Sounds like. bad dealer, which was it? I've had a ZS EV for 3 years and very similar experience when flagging issues. I started taking it 70 miles to get serviced etc to Milton Keynes and altho it's the same dealership brand the service response is outstanding.
I totally agree with you. It's annoying. But like they way thing go it's out of the dealership hands. Like buying a brand-new Samsung phone early phone buyers have to sort the software glitches out. But will take 2 to 3 months for a patch . But at the end of the day you covered it's probably more hassle but it's not a bmw
I pick mine up in two weeks and have moaned and groaned and been nice to my dealer telling him every single problem I’m worried out. @@Letstalkelectric as it stands the dealership is one I’m familiar with but being used to Japanese and now Korean reliability you’re experience with the Chinese MG tells me enough… thank you for sharing…
My experience with MG4 SE SR has been fine. So i have no experience of MG dealership aftercare. Hoping its not as bad as your own. I guess the early releases had more than their fair share of bugs/flaws unfortunately which is a common Chinese problem. they will never admit the problems but they will iron them out with time if they want to survive.
I rejected my 4 after oil leaks, TPMS issues, steering vibration and the top speed being restricted to as low as 58mph (high battery percentage, foot to the floor) MG replaced the traction motor, didn’t fix it. Six months ownership, I actually had it in my possession less than 3 months (the rest of the time was loan cars). So glad to be rid of it, never had such a stressful car. Only car I’ve rejected in 38 years driving.
Oh, here you are. I just posted a message to you on one of your another comment re your rejection. I remember you sounded very stress on Facebook mg page. I am so glad you got rid of it and had your money back. 😊
I've recently sold my MG, it was the ZS EV to be fair and in the main I quite liked it aside from two key facts, 1. I lost 50% of its new value in just 12 months, 2. the dealer/service centre experience is poor. The guys there were friendly mostly however every time I would go there (and I had to go there more times than I was expecting), I always felt like i'd arrived at some crappy one man garage and they were always telling me how crap the cars were (not great to hear from the dealers service centre) and also trying to get any repeated issues fixed by MG was a nightmare. This is because they then have to prove to MG that the original fix didn't work, but because they carried out the fix they clearly didn't really want to admit that. I had to have the door locks fixed as none of them worked properly, and the steering rack was replaced but when it went wrong again they would accept that the fault had returned. I got so fed up with going through this I decided to sell it, it was then I discovered how much value it had lost. I simply couldn't face continuing the experience so I sold it and brought an older car for the same value as I got for it. Im now back with a car from a main brand and whilst I know there can always be poor experiences, ive never had one as unsatisfying as what I have experienced with MG.
Very sorry to hear your experience. Thats exactly my point and how I was made feel too. MG service centres are generally run by one man rather than a team and they are so dependent technically on chinese technicians before even performing the most basic tasks. This is due to they dont just get paid for warranty work from MG. They have to justify the work, have the work approved before they could do anything. I had yo wait for weeks just to get a basic software patch put on. Even then they broke more than they fixed. Horrible experience
I'm really disappointed to hear that. I ordered an SE LR MG4 in October but after the date was put back a couple of times, I needed a car, cancelled the order and ended up with a second hand Tesla Model 3 LR. I am sincerely disappointed that the MG4 has proven to be so problematic for people because it had so much potential.
I think you did the right thing by cancelling it. They just have no dealer/service or even customer service backup. This car was like buying a cheap phone for aliexpress and just hope that it works. Horrible service. How are you getting on with your M3?
@@Letstalkelectric Overall it is a fantastic car let down by stubbornness and bad decisions. The 'Autopilot', as the cruise control system is known as is pretty much useless in my eyes due to the lack of a radar (my car was built with the radar but had it disabled in an over the air update as per Elon's request). It suffers with phantom braking but more irritatingly, when using cruise control in an average speed camera area on a night time for instance, the wipers go mad trying to clear something the car thinks is on the windscreen that isn't there. The wipers aren't very good either, again due to the use of a camera to decide when they switch on. On the other hand, the car is very comfortable, extremely fast (being the dual motor) and efficient.
@@jamesmartin5952 great to hear that, James. I have a MY and M3 in the driveway as we speak and yes there have been some Elon’s quirks which have been inherited into Teslas but apart from them, great cars..
I see where you are coming from however, its not just the dealer I had bought the car from gave me a hard time, its my local service dealer and 2 more MG dealers whom didnt want to help me. Of course, it’ll be easier to name and shame them lot but there have been people out there with no issues with their MGs and last thing I want to do is to paint all dealers with the same brush
I bought an i30 green a dealer super excellent service on everything. Then the dealership got sold to a different company. First year, of the new ownership had to go in 4 times to get the warranty extended for the next year. As Hyundai had 7 now 5 years of warranty but the car has to be serviced at the same dealership to be extended for a year. Then getting the service done the next 3 times had problems, with getting it extended or with things done to the car. Also take the car then 3 days later a headlight or tail light has burnt out. So took it back to get fixed, then ended up doing it myself. The last change of lights the tail light look all burned out so I wonder if the guys they change the lights to a bad blub all the time to get extra work. Then i find it that at least 1 guy has gotten sacked because of a lot of problems as he didn't want or like working for Hyundai, the car brand had also changed, as GM closed down Holden. There's stuff online about this employee causing lots of problems for owners. It's a shame as you expect certain things and 1 person can simply destroy everything.
You have a very lucky neighbour as they managed to give it back to the dealer. My dealer was horrible and kept resisting to assist. My wife refused to drive that car due to the fear of being locked and trapped in.
Doesn't surprise me. I think they only managed it as they contacted the finance company/motability to complain. These new MG's rust badly as well. A neighbour's ZS is covered in surface rust underneath and isn't stonechipped or seam sealed at all.
Was considering a MG4 but had a suspicion may not be a good idea. Beta Android Auto is okay, the other issues if not your fault are totally unacceptable. Tesla model sitting on the shelf in the background is a giveaway in that you know what should have bought. The old saying you get what you pay for rings true in this case.
You my friend have the patience of a saint. My experience with friends and the forums you either get a good one or a bad one with MG its not consistant and at least one friend got rid of theirs after a few months following a major fault with the drive motor. I had the original Ioniq EV for 5 years and since March I have had a Kona. No issues whats so ever with either, so whilst in the fuure I may consider a chineses brand it would not be MG
These owners' reviews are great because the car channels play the game with manufacturers, never giving the most useful information and aldo wanting to be given demo cars to review. So they're biased.
I am glad that I didn't buy a mg4 after bad customer service for just on test drive I decided to go for a hyundai went in warranty repair great service no issues from dealer for repair
I think MGs problem is it dealers ( not all ) look for your local dealer reviews before buying .I know from experience that my dealer is clueless and wont buy another MG while they hold the franchise
your case apart from the early model problems like any car could have is crap dealer experience , i have trophy LR and i use it as a cab in two months i put 10k kms on it and its been perfect , its a pity you had to get rid of it like that
MG dealers a shit. I rejected my new ZS EV after it spent more than two months off the road for various issues. In the end they couldn't fix it so I rejected it. Wouldn't touch another MG ever. My new Kona Electric is like a luxury car compared to the crappy ZS.
Couldn’t agree more, @sbomorse. Dealers are lacking professionalism big time. Service team is run by one person only who relies on responses from china. My MG4 had a crazy rattle to which they said that china tech dont consider this to be a problem. They had no idea how to fix the oil leake, they kept topping up the oil. Hated every minute dealing with them.
A further comment. I bough a Toyota brand new (just conventional petrol) and kept it 8 years. No faults whatsoever. Why? The quality is DESIGNED in from the ground up rather than an after thought. Looks like MG took the Longbridge quality control with them to China! Think I will be wary following too close behind an Mg4 in case it decides to do an emergency stop.
Most Toyotas work well but when you factor in fuel and running costs are going to come out much better off owning an EV. Obviously get something reliable like a Tesla or a Korean brand.
@@trythis2821 It depends. If you buy a Tesla be aware that when the warranty goes you're at the mercy of Tesla prices as they point blank refuse to supply 3rd party garages. So I'm guessing they're not cheap in the first place. Caveat emptor. Another thought. I look at it through the lens of not being able to charge at home as I'm in that situation. The charge points close by are all 79p a kWh so don't accept that will be cheaper for me, and don't get me started on the epic depreciation of EVs.
@@keithhobbs1 Good points but I do have access to home charging. In Australia on a novated lease can save one third of the purchase price. If fuel and running costs are factored in becomes a great proposition. Currently have not bought so won't be getting the depreciation hit others have, unless of course prices keep heading south.
I had oil leak, car kept phantom braking and rejecting chargers. I couldn’t book an appointment with the dealer for atleast 10 weeks. I wasnt feeling safe me driving or even putting my family in the car, hence AA was called in to have it recovered and dumped the car to the dealer. AA was happy to recover as he deemed the car not safe to be driven with those issues but still my local dealer was not ready to accept the car. Hope this answers your question..
A shame you didn't reject the car immediately, the moment you saw the initial dents, for a Brand new fresh one.. - I've had my Trophy since 1st Dec 2022, & it has been fantastic overall.. It had the lubricant leak issue, which they fixed promptly. I have received several updates over 2023/24 where things have just gradually become even more refined.. But it also sounds like your dealer were shite. £32k is 'not' cheap, it's a material sum of money. And they should have 'owned' the problems properly. Or taken it back for a replacement.
On 1 July in Australia, electricity rates are increasing 25-30 % just as MG4 is arriving. At 18kwh per 100km, it will cost around $10 per 100km to charge at home, probably double that at a commercial charging station. This is much than my petrol powered Hyundai costs in fuel. Wtf
@@siasek We have solar. But thats during daytime obviously when you are using the car or its parked somewhere in city. Electricity is among the highest price in the world in Australia. Average bill for a home is $2,000+ every year and thats without an EV.
I'm in Australia as well. You can get a dedicated wall charger installed that will be on special EV charging tariff, what this means is at certain times of the day will have free charging and at peak times will be a dramatically reduced rate. If you can get solar installed will be better again.
Hang on… you have been treated horrible and it's definitely not a "dirt cheap" car. You paid (in Dutch value at least) close to €36.000. That's not a little bit of money. And for a brand new car you are entitled to a proper service if things break. I've been very interested in the MG4 since it's launch, but aside from the buggy software and the additional (and increasing) hardware shortcomings and bad service-stories I'm seeing, I'm not really confident in trusting the car. At all.
I see your point and I think I should have pushed harder and demanded a “proper” service but looking around at other people who had been battling for months just to get their car to be seen made me realise that its not worth my time and effort. Especially when my wife had lost faith in the car after being locked in with my little one. Recently my mate’s MG4’s battery had degraded to 85% in less than 5000 miles and the service centre just told him that China tech support had rejected the claim and asked to review the situation in 2 years time and re assess the battery health. He is so frustrated to see he is just able to manage 130 miles in summer out of a brand new car. Horrible service
@@Letstalkelectric, I honestly can't blame you… after such a horrible treatment from the dealer/garage, I would want to get rid of the eyesore as well. And looking around on TH-cam/Google, there seem to be a surprisingly huge amount of people who have increasingly annoying problems. The first sign was the software and lack of saving a driver profile I think. After their utter silence and inability to fix that with a simple software update, both software and hardware issues kept piling up. Your mate's battery degradation is another one of those problems. Those things are far beyond "you have a cheap car"… it's a faulty product and it's a shame the countless (professional) reviewers on TH-cam haven't said a word about it. I hope you found a better car and service now though :)
@@Joram0611 Cheers bud. Yes I did manage to get a Tesla Model Y. I wouldn’t lie, my brand new tesla had a very small number of issues (side camera replacement, door ppf had bubbles, wheel balancing was out)however most of them were acknowledged and resolved on my driveway with in a week. No car is perfect and all cars can develop issues however how those issues are dealt with matters. The oil leak on my MG4 was acknowledged after me kept asking for a check as I was seeing oil patches on my driveway. After 5th time they did check and said yes there is a leak, we have topped the oil level, there is no fix in place and you’ll just need to visit us every month to have the levels topped up. And wrt to your driveway staining you can stick a cardboard or a bowl under your car to catch the oil. Some people are actually doing it to see how much oil they have lost and then topping up the level themselves 😳
@@Letstalkelectric I hear a lot of good things about the quality of Tesla's service, and their battery software is top notch. You're right about that every car (brand) can have it's share of minor issues, or maybe some people have the bad luck in getting a faulty car. It's a matter of how many issues are there, and how are they dealt with. If someone pays tens of thousands of euros/pounds, you can expect a bit of service. Happy to hear that you got both that and a car with a smaller amount of issues this time around :)
Same here in Australia. Some people are seduced by the 7 year warranty. But they soon learn that it is worth nothing, as MG have no interest in helping customers once they have purchased and driven off the lot.
Exactly that. Its such a pain to get even your booked. Once I was told to wait 4 months just to have booked in to get the rattle and the software glitch checked. I just got carried away with the price and went in with my eyes closed
well early models might have been , i got mine in march and had none of those problems so cannot generalise , the dealer is the problem , i am from Malta and the dealer will back the problems if they ever come up
Crazy to say oil leaks are acceptable because kts a cheaper car. You paid for 7 year warranty and got none. They should have taken it back under consumer guarantees act.
I see your point buddy. However, I am taking about 5 dealers around 60 miles of me (Ascot). No one was interested in even booking me in for look at the car. AA man said this was the most horrible experience he had seen..
Came across this video . Just a point here. It was just you talking of your experience with the MG4. I get suspicious when you didn't put any pics or documentation on the video so we can see proof of your claims ? Maybe it's my suspicious nature 🤔
Dont blame you buddy. EV market has come a long way and there are so many options available now. I am sure you’ll be able to find something better than MG.
Sounds to be you had trouble with the dealership and not so much with the actual car, but then you decided to part exchange the car knowing it had all these apparent faults? So whos to blame here?
Not getting your point here. Car had major faults which is why I got in touch with the dealer. Dealer and service teams were incompetent hence I wasnt getting anywhere. Last thing I wanted was my wife and a 2 year old are trapped in the car. I sold the car keeping the dealer informed (everything was documented anyway) and if the dealer decides not to disclose it to the new owner, isnt really my fault. Sorry, not being rude here. I did say in my video its just my experience
"it's a very cheap car" £25 - £32K, jees, the world has left me way behind, - an unthinkable amount of money for me!
If I had spent even half that on a new car and it had quality control issues, I'd be far from impressed. I don't call 25k cheap. I wouldn't waste my money. Cars in my opinion are just stressful money pits.

"it's a very cheap car" no it's not. not in the slightest. it's cheap for an electric car. but £26k is still not cheap by any means. It's seems the biggest issue with MG4 is MG themselves. horrific dealerships. I considered this car but not a chance. too many horror stories.

I agree, rejection would have got him all of his money back (potentially minus a mileage figure)
It was on sale in China before it came to the UK. They are not early production cars. Tesla are new to making cars and got away with a hell of a lot
I had one of the first batch of fifty right hand drive BMW E46s made. I didn't have a single problem with it over the following five years. The guy that bought it from me ran it for another thirteen years with minimal parts needing replacement. That was one well screwed together motor.
Our Leaf is now 10 years old, 117000 km, still working fine, and very quiet.
Thats really good. Leafs are bulletproof…
And has a range of 60 miles...
Central rattle wasnt loud enough to be covered under the warranty
Oil leak was covered under the warranty but they had no solution for it other than just keep topping up the oil level
How’s your MG4 doing?
How's the car?
Wasn’t Southport was it

Sad to hear that you had such a bad experience. Thanks for your video. . . I am sure that it will be helpful for some folks who are considering their next car.
Cheers Sarah and thanks for understanding. I was really happy with the car u til there was no support from the dealer.

Thats exactly how I was treated. MG surely need to invest on their after sales and dealership network

Weird, this video was removed for a few weeks and has now reappeared? Any explanation?
I think you made the right choice. MGs after sales can be a bit painful to deal with.

Thank you for this information. Your experience must of been exhausting and took you extra effort to share this with us on TH-cam when you probably really wanted to put this all behind you.
Glad it was helpful!
The default setting is an NCAP requirement. Every manufacturer the same. Everyone hates it!
Cheers Nik. I am sure my car was just one of the bad ones. Yours will last you ages. Good luck with it and have many many safe miles in your MG4 👍👍

What I'm noticing is EV Warranty is "Go flick yourself!" across the board. Doesn't matter which Manufacturer.. even Tesla

@@Bonzo14 haha, its Ascot mate…
Do you think buying a demo would mitigate most of these risks I suppose the demo car would have 1000-2000 kms on it before the dealer sells it and these issues are taken care off?
Hi. Not too sure about it as the car was absolutely faultless until the first 5k miles. Moreover, the fact is that the dealer/service wasn’t competent enough to identify the issue let alone fix it. 😊
And did you tell the unsuspecting buyer that you were selling them a dodgy car?

In this modern day of mass production with robotic techniques and extremely high quality production , your car and it's supplying dealer should be strangers until service is due.

Similar experience with MG Indonesia. No one provides any after sales service, zero responsibility and long term warranty is worthless
Horrible isnt it. When you spend so much money and end up getting no support
@@Letstalkelectric therefore I liked my previous Mercedes and BMW. One email to Germany and the local dealer took action within 24 hours. But MG is absolutely hopeless
@@arnehayn4354couldnt agree more. Do you still have your MG or got rid of it?
@@Letstalkelectric I still have it because MG has basically no re-sale value in Indonesia. And it seems MG does not invest much in training. As a layman and using a bit of common sense I had to explain the car defects to the mechanic.
But the most frustrating issue is that it is not possible to escalate unless.gou g to court. And I am close to this stage.

Are you really saying 5 dealers refused to look at a dangerous phantom braking issue, and you didn't take it up with the regional or national mg management?
This is not a phantom issue it happens on lots of the cars, mine has done it when the system was supposedly switched off, I have spoken to mguk and their answer is if they change it they will lose their ncap 5 star "safety rating" , same with the random lane keeping software that drives the car into the kerb and follows imagined lines in the road .
@@kynastonp then ask them if their safetey rating is more important then not killing people, that might wake them up, if your software for security features is implemented so poorly they still activate when switched off that is a serious danger, report it like that and it will most definently be taken serious.

I bought one of the early Skoda Octavia IVs and had 3 months worth of hideous software problems (screen jams, refusal of screen to work, no stereo sound etc) ans eventually the Skoda dealer took it back and refunded me the whole amount (£28k). They STILL have the car after 12 months as Skoda CANNOT advise them as to how to fix it and I feel sorry for the dealer as they've been left high and dry by Skoda UK.
I had wait entire month for my audi a4 engine fix, will it be comfort u?
Absolutely, I have waited longer for my BMW and MINI fixes in the past however, I was kept up to date, was given a courtesy car to keep me moving. MG4 had licked my family in, had a leaky differential motor, buggy software which auto braked the car 3 times on a busy A roads and MG wouldnt do anything to fix thise issues let alone booking the car in. They even told AA not to bring the car in for another 4 months due to no technician available to look at the car.
Hi, from NZ, thinking of getting MG4 LR Essence , priced at $55990.00 but if Dealerships in UK are not supporting customers with parts or service I wonder if the rot is going to be the same here. Once they get your money it seems they don't want to know you, is this MG of a whole or just a bad batch of dealers, pre orders are starting tomorrow here, cheers
I feel really sorry for you and I was in your shoes this time last year. Hope you get a speedy resolution.
@@Letstalkelectric The dealer it is with now is not the supplying dealer. I bought it 200 miles from home which makes it difficult to take it back to them. Another complication is I bought it cash. I use the MG4 (SE LR which is 6 months old) to get to work for 3 days a week for an 80 miles round trip. It drives OK (?) and that is it. The number of bugs with the the infotainment system is a joke. I have never experienced radio crashing/freezing! It reminds me of the early windows software!!!! Unless the software is sorted, when this car is returned I won't be touching another MG (made in other countries).

Range (140 miles full charge) is not an issue for my journeys. I only use a 7kw home charger (4 /5 hours to charge). I get 5 miles per KWH so not bad. Quality is fair to good, fun to drive. It's a very agreeable little town car. Dogs (3), golf clubs etc. fit when rear seats drop. Not a family car and I would imagine it's fairly uncomfortable for rear passengers (only 2 doors) - two adults in front seats is fine. Bought specifically for my personal needs to replace Audi TT diesel. For longer journeys I use another (ICE) vehicle. @@Letstalkelectric

MG5 didn't pass crash test in Australia.
Thank you I was borderline about buying but now I’m not sure at all.
Good decision
You did well
I lasted 10 weeks before I’ve swapped it for the Niro EV. Never again 👍
Good for you. You must be so glad.. I have heard nothing but great stuff about Nero
eniro and koni both have motor reduction gearbox problems.

Wow i must be very lucky iv got a 2020 model and i have nothing to complain about, i love my MG and going to bye the extra next year.
The complaints and the faults you experienced seem genuine so why not name and shame the dealership?
Cheers for the message. Hope you car is treating you well. 👍
Neighbours gave theirs back due to brakes sticking on, non charging problems, locking them out etc etc.

Tried that but they werent very supportive. It was hard to get a response from the dealership
I think MGs problem is it dealers ( not all ) look for your local dealer reviews before buying .I know from experience that my dealer is clueless and wont buy another MG while they hold the franchise
I got one MG4 standard, since 1 year, im very happy about it !!!!!! not change anymore !!!!!!!
your case apart from the early model problems like any car could have is crap dealer experience , i have trophy LR and i use it as a cab in two months i put 10k kms on it and its been perfect , its a pity you had to get rid of it like that
MG dealers a shit.
Thanks for sharing
Pleasure😊
I bought mg 4 and i love it, great car
@@TheBosti agree they are great car for what you pay for it. I would have kept it had I not got so many serious issues with it. Goodluck with yours 👍👍
You called the AA out for what exactly?
All sounds rather strange.
Android auto & other third party apps would not be a deal breaker for me, never use them.
Wtf
Don't you have solar and nearly free electricity in Autralia?
Don’t blame you for getting rid of it, they seem to be full of problems and the dealers have no interest or experience
Exactly that. Worst part was, my car was with them for 5 times and never once I got anything in black and white stating what was done on the car
well early models might have been , i got mine in march and had none of those problems so cannot generalise , the dealer is the problem , i am from Malta and the dealer will back the problems if they ever come up
Crazy to say oil leaks are acceptable because kts a cheaper car.
You paid for 7 year warranty and got none.
They should have taken it back under consumer guarantees act.
I wanted to but i needed a car which my wife could drive with the little one. I was so shocked with the after sales service I received
Name the dealership! Otherwise you're naming them all bad. You should name the dealership.
I see your point buddy. However, I am taking about 5 dealers around 60 miles of me (Ascot). No one was interested in even booking me in for look at the car. AA man said this was the most horrible experience he had seen..
Name them all, we need to know
MG need to upgrade their game for sure, otherwise how the hell do they hope to sell a high end 60k roadster with customer service like that !
Completely with you on that
Came across this video . Just a point here. It was just you talking of your experience with the MG4. I get suspicious when you didn't put any pics or documentation on the video so we can see proof of your claims ?
Maybe it's my suspicious nature 🤔
The reviewer sounds genuine, maybe you are from a certain country that has a vested interest in discrediting anything negative about MG.
Talked me out of considering one.
