‎ Planted Aquarium Lights are a relatively simple subject. I break it down between LED, T5, T8, Power compacts etc. Once you have the right light for your planted aquarium it gets a lot easier to grow plants. A great guide for the beginner planted aquarium.

Cory, in all honesty you have to be the one youtuber that i constantly find myself getting excited over to watch your new videos. It's the fact that i always know it'll be something of high quality that has me waiting in anticipation. One thing i admire most is the fact that you have never seemed to be carried away by promoting your business or products which is something that far too many you-tubers seem to do. Your honesty in answering questions is pleasing and the quality content of your videos is unarguably seen through by the wealth of knowledge that you have. Thank you Cory

I used to always have fish tanks as a kid. as someone who got nosebleeds A LOT at night, having one in my room during the day and night was fantastic! plus fish are just adorable lil wet babies. Now as an adult, its been a while since i've had a fish tank for more than just looks. I plan on planting it, maybe breeding the fish i get, and really...getting into it. Watching all your information videos, and even the unboxings and such, have been so helpful in gathering information that I need to know, or refresh myself on. I want to thank you for that and to tell you THANKS for being as helpful as you are. I can tell you're passionate about the hobby, and job for you, and thank-you for that.
THANKS from my future wet babies.

im quite a handy man, so i use the 4 feet LED shop lights from the hardware store on all my planted breeder tanks, but i modify the hoods and make my own reflectors so the light goes straight down, and not out to the sides so much, some aluminum foil and glue woks well as a reflector on the inside, and some tin, tin snips, and rivets can make the edges of the hood come straight down directing the light down into the tank instead of away from it. for my show tanks i tend to use the stingrays.

I have six LED shoplight T5 integrated fixtures zip tied together on top of my 55 gallon tank and I’m achieving 220-240 PAR at substrate. I’m very pleased with the build quality, too: even though they were cheap, they’ve gotten dropped and submerged before and still work just as well as they did when I first got them. I actually bought a backup and compared the brightness and they are the same, with one having been used for six months

I left the hobby back in 1995.
Set up a 55 in 21. There have been so many advances that it’s like learning everything all over. It makes everything so fun. It also explains why the lady at the store asked me several times was I sure I wanted a under gravel filter. Lol 😂
A primary thing Iv learned so far is I can’t grow plants that are heavy root feeders. They don’t die off - they just don’t grow and flourish. But if it can feed from column including roots I have great success so far.

Nice video - tons of great LED lights on Amazon for $20 and less for small tanks. Great spectrum. Even more (if you need brighter) for under $50. Most give you a VERY simple diagram of what light you need as per your setup 👍 Simple...

Very good informative video as always. I took a 10 dollar led strip on a roll, put in on a woodstrip, duc taped two pieces of styrofoam onto the wooden strip and used that on my aquarium, as long as you have a lit on the aquarium so the led's don't get wet it works just fine, plants love it with low amounts of fertilizer. They don't grow super fast but they grow just fine. Sure, not as pretty but when you are on a tight budget you are on a tight budget and I can attached a second row of led's to the same power source and wooden strip to double the output in 15 minutes.

So Cory, I did a ton of research and ultimately decided to go with a Beamswork. I added a dimmer (per a suggestion from a reviewer), so I could dial it down if the light too bright. I am a beginner with a 20 gallon. My light & (eco complete) substrate arrive today. I have about 5 different plants - which arrived in the mail yesterday..... 🤞 Hoping this is gonna go well 🤞 Thanks for this very comprehensive video!!

Of course not! I'm just not a teenager anymore so it's unusual for me to do that. Your very informative and have a great way of explaining things that makes me understand even complicated things which is what I need! I just bought a Fluval FLEX 34L 9 Gallon Nano Glass Aquarium Kit. Allot of the information I've seen/heard seems very complicated! I just read that I need to let my aquarium sit (cycle) for six weeks before adding any fish! And that the tank is only big enough for one small (one inch) fish. Is that true??? Please help!

Now I want to start a planted aquarium not for fishes though, for my soon to be painted turtle and of course I need to find a light suitable for both the turtle and the plants, any recommendations? turtles need a UVB and UVA light and I don't know if it would work for the plants as well. or I could get different lights for each but im not sure I want to take that rough and spend more money. I feel like I might be overthinking this:/

Those corkscrew curly Q bulbs are actually called CFL or compact florescent bulbs .
Back before they became popular they used to run full spectrum but then they figured out how to get more money and decided to limit the frequency to 2700k instead of 6000k and then make the full spectrum "plant bulbs" and charge more for them. Also those first CFL bulbs were rock solid , dependable and lasted for several years .
I still have one in use from 2001 .The new ones absolutely suck and don't last very long at all .
LED lights are definitely the way to go especially considering the fact that they're way cheaper to operate plus you don't have to worry about breaking a bulb and inhaling the gases or cutting yourself or dumping mercury in the landfills .
Also if you build an LED set up yourself you can set it up for spot lighting a specific species you want more light on or any number of cool effects that can be done . Anyway a good primer for lighting . 👏

I bought Amazon Sword and Java Fern from a chain pet store. My Java Fern kept dying meanwhile my Amazon Sword has flourished. I kept trying root tabs, supplements, gluing to rock/driftwood. I now realized that my lighting is probably what kept killing it. Lesson learned. This hobby is humbling. -_-

Cory what would you recommend for a low tech 20 gal long no co2 tank? I was thinking finnex stingray or fluval aqua sky?

Hi Cory, great video! I am a newbie planning to get my first planted tank.
I may go for a 15 or 20 gallon tank and I really like the 24/7 feature of finnex. I have read and watch a lot of controversial thing about this fixture. Do you think this light is overpowered for a kind of lowtech tank (no CO2) ??
    Regards from France !

Hey Cory! I got the top fin essentials aquarium starter kit and it comes with leds in the hood, will these lights be sufficient to grow plants? If I wanted to upgrade to brighter lights how could I do this? What would you recommend as far as lights go?

I have a 55 gallon bowed front aquarium with low tech plants. What is the best light for me to use?

  • @Firebird894

since you made this video the cheap ebay full spec LED's have actually got pretty good for the money and currently I am growing water hyacinth under them in my breeding tubs for my guppies and it grows them just fine they also grow most other plants I have and I have them on short and taller tanks on taller tanks some plants grow a bit slower and I dont get as good reds but I am low tech no CO2 and they still grow and I think the fish look good, they cost me $30 -- $40 depending on length and I just use those and they don't use much power compared to the previous T5's.

Love your videos!! I have a 75 gallon. I have java ferns, moss balls, and a new one but I don’t know what it is. I want more plants but I don’t want any hard to care for plants. What type of light would I need. I am not an expert in fish keeping or aquarium plants. I like low tech tanks. No co2. Idk anything about that.

I've always left my light on a timer for 12 hours. Never had any algae problems, idk how. But should you adjust the lighting to simulate seasonal lighting changes?

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

I wouldn't adjust the light based on seasons. 12 Hours can be done, just have to base the rest around that.

I have a 75 gallon tank with two finnex 24 _7 one is 2nd gen the other is the third or newest .I also run pres. co2 . I really like the look of the two together and I am just getting things dialed in. I run my lights on 24_7 mode and love them. Am I sure I made the best choice . Who knows but I like it and and am happy. When i bought my first one finnex was my choice because the 24_7 mode .Now other manufacturers have copied that and possibly are better lights . I almost went with fluval 3.0 but i didnt want them to be drastically different so i stayed with finnex and kept some cash in pocket. Research is key to a decision .What ever light you get you are going to have a learning curve. Adjustability is a nice feature. Also it's like anything else you get what you pay for to a degree.

So would the light that comes on a starter kit be fine? If not what light would you recommend for a 20 gallon tall?

What type of plants can I grow with a 16 watt LED light? It's the tank light that came with my terra tank.

LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos!! Thank you for making them! I am really enjoying your channel! What are your thoughts on the shimmer effect leds create? I've always used t5s in the past and even though I love the flexibility my new finnex 24/7 provides, I hate the shimmer (more like stobe light) effect. I can't even look at the tank! Makes me dizzy! So I ended up making the surface of the water pefectly still (added a surface skimmer for gas exchange) to calm it down. But, honestly, I'm thinking of going back to t5s! Do you think led light companies will start to produce lights that replicate the solid calmer light of t5s? Perhaps with some kind of light diffuser? I really love the colour and light t5s put out. What are your thoughts on the future of t5s? Do you think some will continue to be produced :)

I didn’t think lighting for plants could get so “complicated.” I am probably going to get better lighting for my 125 gallon. The plants are growing very slowly even with a full spectrum fertilizer.

    two questions:
    1) if you're using a lower wattage bulb and want more growth, can the timer set longer than 10 hours? can the light be on continuous?
    2) what are the guidelines for wattage vs. depth using the multicolor LED strip lights? is one row good enough? is too many possible? its only 7 volts DC...

I have a fluval profile 1200 to buy lighting for. 4 T5 bulbs is probably not cheap. I havent started the aquarium yet, but the new fluval 3.0 is what I will probably upgrade to (probably two of them since its such a deep tank).

Great video Cory, thank you. What light would recommend for a 29 gallon? I know it is long, like the 20, but it is also deep so I wasn't sure what was best. I have a variety of plants that I bought as a package (jungle val, anubias, etc.) and want them to really fill the tank because that's my favorite look. Thanks in advance.

What about a 56g corner tank bowfront? I am good finding lighting for my rectangular/square tanks but this dang tank is causing me grief when it comes to lighting. I know I can't light it all uniformly but I am struggling even to find lighting that makes the tank look well lit. I got it simply to utilize a specific space in my house, and I've currently got three different light fixtures on it and it's just so BLAH. It grows plants well but the lighting just doesn't WOW visually if that makes sense. Any suggestions would be AMAZING!
