A big problem I can see with this is if they continue to stick to the subscription model they've been using since the game's original release 20+ years ago. That might have worked back in the early 2000s when MMOs were still viewed as an experimental genre and touted as the future of multiplayer gaming, but I don't think the average FPS player interested in a WW2 shooter would be willing to pay a monthly subscription fee today even if the server upkeep costs on the backend justify it. Restricting different levels of equipment access to different subscription tiers as is currently the case will just get it quickly dismissed as P2W.
Man, that has always been my point when complaining to the CRS. The subscription model is what killed and continues to kill the game. People will simply not pay 18 dollars for a 20+ years old game. But they simply refuse to listen.
This game was always for a niche community. Without subscription the game will die.
I mean, a game this big needs some big investment and monthly spending into the server itself, most MMO's wont survive without suscriptions (Unless they implement P2Wm and other shit). What I liked about the OG game is that you could play for free but only as rifle infantry, that way everyone could play and the map wouldnt be swarmed by tankers, snipers, and MG's.
@@Seltheros it's basically dead already. People who still pay for it are just a few diehard fans. The thing is if they allow more with a free subscription, (say a basic access with infantry and light tanks only, leave high ranks, top tier equipment, naval and air for the premium) maybe more people will start playing it and maybe this increase in popularity will begin giving it more attention. That's a lot of maybes, of course, since the time to take action to upgrade this game was probably 10+ years ago.
@@cls2518 Yep thats what the game offers now. But the free stuff has to be good enough to encourage players to upgrade
1000's of people still sounds kind of empty on a map the size of europe..
In the game's heyday, there were usually 3-4 towns being fought over any given time with a few hundred combatants
That's what was cool, if an attack failed you would pivot to another area on the frontline to probe for weakness
@@carelesscribo3072 yeah it actually has dynamic map that shows in what battalions people are needed so that people know what to attack and what to defend, it's pretty neat and straight forward
it's a 1/2 scale map of Europe, but still very big. The server can hold around 20,000 I think
so planetside 2 empty in 90% of the map except for key points
It is. The problem with the game was you'd walk for hours on your own then get sniped by somebody you can't see
I played WW2 Online over 10 years ago! Used to fly planes and even back then, it was a really fun and ambitious project! 1,000 players in a war, hope this becomes the 1st person Foxhole!
Spot on mate if it becomes the new foxhole im all over it!!
100 percent just typed this above lol
You should try squad 44
Still remember dropping a German infantryman from about 400 yards away, back when all you could see at that range on a contemporary monitor was a gray pixel moving down a lime green hill.
HLL and Planetside 2 are two of some of my favorite games ever. the idea of having a planetside style WWII shooter is terrific!
This concept definitely has the potential to capture a lot of PS2 players.
Its pacing is more on par with planetside 1, ps2 pacing is neurotic where no ground feels sacred. It only takes 1 rifle shot in ww2ol to kill a player, its way more time at positioning and concealment than ps2, which most players don't enjoy. What's crazy is this game came 3 years before ps1.
@@rudestbeast4907 Good Planetside 1 is the superior game
You should look into Squad 44
@@Niallistical I agree
Dude WW2 Oline was the best game I ever played back in the day. I remember playing this game on 56k back in highschool. Had a lot of good memories leading German bomber formations into enemy lines to bomb factories. Real life/college took over and I had to stop playing. Hoping they make this happen. Might get back into it!
I really want this game to make a come back. I bought the yellow box day one. Buggy af first week but so much fun.
I'm one of the original ALPHA testers of WWIIOL (aka Battleground Europe). I still have my Cornered Rat Software T-shirt. I have some screenshots of the very first city, tank and airplanes during an alpha test. The damage detail and combined unit combat make it a truly unique experience, especially at 1/2 scale Europe. Unfortunately they didn't keep up with graphics, UI, animation and other upgrades over the years and the playerbase died off.
If someone decides to invest in making it modern it would be the most immersive WW2 game ever made (technically it already is). Nothing has come close to it since.
I bought the yellow box game opening day. Bugs and all and loved! I’d be great if it makes a come back. I’ll defintely play if it comes back and the price is reasonable.
As someone who played Chokepoint’s predecessor (a source engine mod called Resistance and Liberation), I’m hoping that it can give back the same kinda of experience I remember through rose tinted glasses.
Also briefly played ww2 online for awhile, and I hope that the project can success in modernising the concept.
Yes because WW2 Online runs like shit now. I mean, the mouse controls are so funky and not so well translated into the late windows versions
a bit late but, isn't there a standalone Resistance and Liberation game in development?
@@thencrranger5628 that game is called chokepoint now
@@thencrranger5628 Dude, its literally in the first 5 words, chokepoint
UE5 still needs a ton of work, it relies heavily on frame generation currently.
With 1000s on such a large scale, i would be surprised if anyone not on top of the line rigs could even somewhat play it.
Though lets be real, WW2O with ue5 is probably like 10 years away. So who knows.
Man I played Battleground Europe years ago for hours and days!!! Remembering a whole bomber raid that took ~3+ hours until we reached britain only to get shot down. This game is something else and I am super hyped to see a remake!
@Resonant: Ty very much for the showcase. Great presentation and the information is accurate. We know this project is ambitious, but we also know it's what we're here to do. We look forward to many more folks joining our community and cause to be part of it. We know the sub model is a turn off, but it is the primary reason we've been in operation (continuously) since releasing on June 6th 2001. That said, we have a Free Play option for people to get involved with WWII Online and overtime, you too may fall in love with it as much as we have. Thanks again! Salute!
The chances of this are slim and it would be way off in the future, but if a 2.0 WW2 online could get other theaters of war? Man that'd be amazing. Imagine this type of combat across the entire pacific theater in an island hopping campaign.
Played this from 01-2010ish. No game has ever been as deep and fun.
Sad that mismanagement killed it.
But it does work. The team has kept delivering and keep the game alive for over 20 years. We should support the project
Lots of people seem to think the battles will be 1000s of players all fighting one battle, this is not the case the game works by having many battles at one time.
Support this game!
Go play 1.0 now, they need all the support they can get to get to 2.0 or UE5
With PlanetSide 2 in its waning years, I am glad to see this!
If it's genuinely 1000 player battles and stuff like that , I truly will never need another shooter game. Graphics be damned id love that stuff. Add in weapon diversity , pretty much more than Americans have m1 grand that would be even better.
Honestly my problem with these mil sim shooter has been the scale. Like I understand balance and how the numbers are usually done that way. At the same time I have always wanted to experience 100's of players stuck on the beaches of Normandy, just waiting for 1 dude to start the break through. I've always dreamt of a game like that , in terms of scale , hope this turns out to be the one.
The issue is that not everyone can be an MG, a sniper, a tanker or a pilot. For it to be balanced and somewhat historical you need a good percentage of your playerbase to play regular rifle infantry. I guess they will do as they did in the old game and put up monthly subs, that way they can afford the server upkeep and regularize the playerbase
Plametside 2
It has already existed since 2001. WWII Online is available right now.
Ya imagine Hell Let Loose but 500v500 players. Would be so cool
@@KYDEX97 Enlisted does it the best, most bots in each player squads are rifleman, and players can use their favorite weapons until they die and are forced to play with one of the rifleman bots. Actually, an Enlisted game with the scale of WW2 Online/ Battleground Europe would be the perfect WW2 game.
The physics engine in ww2 online. Especially the sounds.
I have ALWAYS wanted something like this. I can not wait.
Somehow WWII Online returned.
the problem is the engine UE5, its pretty much a tech demo engine and insanely taxing and unoptimized, im on a 4080 for reference.
yeaah 1000 player battles are not happening in ue5 lol
This project has a long way to go and you need to realize that with time, things like the engine and game performance can be improved. It’s a lot of work and it may not be done by (and during the lifetime of) this game specifically, but it can be done.
@@albinospino3089 no its a engine issue, not just a problem with the game, if they used UE4 then this project concept would be realistic and it isnt, no matter how hard the devs optimize UE5 its epic game's framework at the end of the day, UE5 at most is a tech demo engine and its their job to make it stable.
@@Travis_Scorsese If you had paid more attention, you may have realized that I was not speaking strictly about CRS, but also about Epic Games’ UE5 team. As both developers work, provided that they both are working productively on the respective projects, Chokepoint itself may be more feasible, and that was the point I was making.
There are a fair few games on UE5 that are great? Black Myth Wukong runs well. Ark SA, despite the bad netcode. Dark and Darker, Senua 2, Bodycam. Loads of upcoming games are UE5
"The area's secure" tossed me back to Day of Defeat circa 2002 omfg
Oh wow i thought they abandoned this upgrade. I grew up on ww2ol. The gun play is like dayZ, the flight model is microsoft flight sim. The game tracks shrapnel and the ballistic system/physics is the most complex of any game.
I never played the original, but when I discovered it 12 years ago I thought the idea was very ambitious, but the graphics kept me away.
If they REALLY bring this game back, with updated graphics for a new generation, I think I could sink a lot of time into that t.
Ive played WW2online since it came out can't wait for it to go to UR5
I played this when it launched back then, and it had a good player base. The problem now is that no one really plays it anymore. It's practically dead.
Hell Let Loose still the goat of WW2 FPS.
ww2 online was my shit. i was a wee lil boy, but oh man did I have some fun.
indeed HLL are 2km x 1,2km, but they seem much larger due to lack of vechiles and fast movement.
Thats just wrong. HLL map size is 2x1.2 km.
@@Napswhilewatchin damn, you right! Good observation.
not if they up that sprint speed a little ;)
Sounds like ill be walking for 6 IRL hours before seeing an enemy
cant believe I never heard of this game before
the idea of this is absolutely wild. No idea if it would be enjoyable. But it's incredibly ambitious.
8:50 the people who did it back in the day were the original engine developers who made a simulation for the military. Which was then sold off.
7:13 My favorite kind of mancer
shit had me dyin
I discovered in BattleBit that we are missing out on an entire genre of large-scale FPS games. I crave larger amounts of players in a game with halfway decent graphics.
They won't pull this off with UE5 man... Such a big map, no loading screen, I don't believe it, we live in different times
it would be like foxhole but fps and with planes, probably less complicated logi work too
this game basically sounds like foxhole but in ww2.
And fps
I would be more interested in a fictional themed game with the exact same mechanics ww2 online has. That's what I like about foxhole. Thanks to their fictional faction, many people can identify with it without being a real nation or event that has happened.
Foxhole is pretty much WW2 era
@@zehedkbosma5612 To be fair it depends on the war stage. Early war it's much more like WW1 with the trench assaults with only infantry and maybe some arty or cars. Later on we get all those massive bombardments and tank assaults just like ww2
@KYDEX97 Yeah I can agree with that but mainly lots of people hop on late war from what I've heard. It would be crazy if we got a modern warfare foxhole, but ultimately that would ruin a lot of the fun
@Resonant_FPS CRS announced last week that Chokepoint has transitioned from UE4 to UE5 and will hopefully begin community closed-testing in the near future. A significant portion of the trucks, anti-tank & anti-air guns have been remodeled to the UE5 standard in WWII ONLINE with more vehicle in process. This video link may help: th-cam.com/video/Drq4N9zjynM/w-d-xo.html
the tech that star citizen is working on could make this huge. it might be worth it to do a video on. it took millions of dollars of investment but we might see the 64-120 player limit games die very soon in favor of one server type games.
If they make the game run reasonably well with 500 players within render distance that would be insane.
Always wanted a completely open WW2 with different campaigns and missions going on and many players.
So a 1st person Foxhole? Sounds pretty good
I don't know what will come first, the 2.0 game ready to play or me becoming a millionaire and make it happen by funding it in the air. I want this game!
Foxhole with GTA6 graphics gonna go crazy
`PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let this be real and done properly
Don't really think they will get able to do that with Unreal5
If PC hardware continues to cost 2k + in order to achieve playable FPS it will be another sad day.
Currently Squad44 is the most impressive and fun but it is missing players. Can't blame them, post scriptum was plagued but now that is has been taken by the team who developed SQUAD, Squad44 is ridiculous. HLL has more players right now, so most players keep going back because games are almost guaranteed.
I "played" WWII online on the day it launched. It was ok. It was cool that it was so huge but it was too realistic in the sense that you had to ride in a truck for a really long time to get to a position and then wait and wait for an enemy that might not even attack that location. When action did happen, the gameplay was laggy and janky. I didn't like it enough to keep paying the subscription. Then BF1942 came out and that was the experience I had been wanting: big, but action packed with good feeling gameplay.
no dev team is delivering 1000 player servers on any fps game anytime soon maybe in 10 or 15 years
They did 10000 ten thousand back in the day. Until the ISP got after them.
not possible yet to have 1k players in 1 server on "better" quality game
The issue with ww2 online is it isnt very noob friendly
A game of this scale but with an rts style commanding troops would be way more interesting
I hope they finance the game with Premium gear unironically, sure the most usual stuff should be free but experimental weapons and prototypes should be premium.
this sounds mad fr
I hope this game comes to console ,
I mean hell let loose did ,
But who knows they do it later after release of the update/ remake
The word immersion didn't appear once in the video and that's what makes HLL special. What about the others?
If they do succeed making this in Unreal Engine 5 that would be really sick!
Great now I feel old
So it will be WW2 Planetside if they pull it off
Im not sure if you mentioned it because i dont have time to watch the whole video. But the update is coming from the team who made a hardcore tactical ww2 fps called "Resistance and Liberation." It was a half-life 2 mod over a decade ago. If the gameplay is anything like R&L this will be the best ww2 fps out there
Damn, I'm a big fan of BF1942 and I'VE NEVER EVER HEARD OF THIS GAME! What a shame!
Enlisted is underrated imo
Feel like that's not gonna work, remember foxhole tried that and still has limits with the maps and such
You should research Foxhole. Its not a fps but it is a top down persistent ww2 inspired war with thousands of players on each side.
Jeez I forgot about this game
Im surprised we dont get a game like planetside 2 but not futuristic. More modernized w mechanics like bf3-4 gun play like tarkovs n stuff. I think ppl would love that.
What people don't understand is that a realistic modern war is primarily about drones and cruise missiles. I don't think anyone wants to sit in a trench 24/7 hoping that they don´t get hit by a missile or that they get spotted by a tank with a thermal optics.
My prediction: development for 5 years, we're going to have to wait another 5 years before it gets launched, by then there will already be a dozen new WW2 games and this game will never lift off, there's going to be a really diehard community that will say it's gods gift, but will never surpass 5K players. If they push development, get on par with other WW2 FPS in its competition, it could succeed and convert HLL and S44 players, but at what cost....we shall see.
Ok this is interesting, the gameplay shown here reminds me of a classic source mod called Resistance and liberation, look it up
It is, but heavily modified and upgraded. A couple of days ago they released UE5 footage of it.
I'm glad resistance and liberation still lives on and is not just abandond
Sounds pretty ambitious.. I’ll stick to foxhole for now best mmo out there
I mean this sounds great and all but this looks like alpha footage from Hell Let Loose, and that game took ages tot be finished. If nothing's changed then Unreal Engine is also an extremely poor choice for an MMO, but I'm no dev so correct me if I'm wrong. In my experience 100 people games on Unreal Engine just kind of barely work.
Idk, cool idea, I hope it succeeds because I would very much like to play this but I think they're doomed to fail; I'll believe it when I see it.
Foxhole but first person would be epic
I CANNOT WAIT!!!!
never knew this was a thing
If they ditch the god awful subscription service I'll buy it. Otherwise it's a complete no-go for me.
As someone who is always going to pick an aircraft slot in these games if available, I refuse to pay £215 a year to have access to a spitfire...
played this game back in '05
The whole of Yowup!
If I play HLL today is because I was in love of that game at early 2000 😢
Foxhole 3d? Well I guess that's nice.
Myself and many others were there at the start and while they took our money for big promises, they then gave us the finger.
Chokepoint feels a little clunky.... not as slick like S44. Good that you mentioned Planetside 2. Converting that to WW2 would be great. I would play it, if it is as slick as S44 with the graphics and weapon sounds.
Really wish it wasn't western front... it's so boring in comparison to the Eastern Front where ridiculous battles that the majority of WW2 enthusiasts still have no idea about. I can never look at the western front the same after... it's just a little finger in comparison to the rest of the body that was WW2.
WW2 Online is an incredible concept. If Squad 44 could collaborate with the WW2 online guys that would be incredible.
do you know it would take an engineering feet to make a game like this with unreal and millions of dollars and a team of 100's etc.... it would be cool though if it gets picked up a major company, but its only a handful of volunteers :(
If they pull it off, it could really be a game changer
yeah, I would play it, might be bigger than squad if they do it
So, it'll be like Planetside 2 BUT in WW2 and just 2 factions against each other!? Hmmm....
And just to remember, Planetside 2 is dying, so idk if people will really want to play this one.
I think 1001 players is better, this game will be awesome, imagine 500 players trying to take back a large town❤
Assets and animations look almost directly ripped from heroes and generals
Or maybe other way around?
Maybe the other way around
very hyped
wish the day this game will make it into new graphics UE5. I was 18 when it was in beta was a dream back then. i never understood why the stooped at Belgium and England strategic map.
They recently showed footage of it in UE5
4:10 😂
Nice job.
Most biggest world war ii map
I wanna see a pipeline how are you suppose to have giga map without loading sections and in same time update , what 1k players actions each tick ? Annnd that it all looks decently modern?
UE5 is great engine no doubt but it's not magical thing to press 2 buttons and instantly have a mmorpg scale game.
Technically it's almost impossible , well at least to point of being functional , so it sounds like a bunch of hype that will turn into your regular ww2 shooter game.
Like bf1 but bigger maps
It's literally like Foxhole but FPS
It’s like foxhole but in first person
So I'd assume in like the main menu before you join a server or something you chose either allies or axis or is it something else entirely?
Planetside 2 vibes
If we have demolition it would be the ultimate game
Iirc there is satchel charge for anti tank
