  • Well ok - it was 13 miles after topping the tank off, so maybe 20 miles total. But seeing a spooky "13" on the trip odometer as it broke while going down the road made we wonder - is this a premonition of things to come, or simply the Jag acting like a cat?
We show the issue, talk about how to troubleshoot, and get into others things that are wrong.

I just bought a very nice 1987 XJ6 S3 and drove it 93 lovely miles back home. My paranoid ass has already started buying stuff for it to head off problems. I will say Moss Motors is not impressing me so far. They advertised a genuine Jaguar oil filter (with pictures!) at a good price, so I ordered two and received some no-name filters I’ll be sending back. I’ve since ordered a Mann filter from Rock Auto. I did find a treasure trove of new Lucas coils, relays, etc. at British Parts Northwest, and Welsh Enterprises is also a great source. I scored a NOS Lucas ignition amplifier on eBay for $105 too-even included a spare Huco ignition module. I’m hoping to enjoy the car for many years and miles, as it’s in beautiful condition. I wish y’all the best of luck with this, and I’m going to be watching more so I’ll know what sorts of things to look for!

Had a similar problem with an e30 after a few miles. Right after it drove from Miami to DC as well! Turned out to be a lose grounding strap on the block.

That's a great point - I did redo the battery ground but haven't yet checked engine to chassis grounds - I'll definitely do that

Your problem was similar to mine and it turned out to be the ignition amplifier. Sometimes to engine would not start and l found that if l wriggled the amplifier connection it would finally start. On ocassions when driving, the engine would hesitate and cut out, so l would wriggle to connection again and it would be fine. So l replaced the amp and no issue since.

Yep! Welcome to the lovely world of Series III "reliability issues" ! I am so not surprised...

Mine did the same, was the ballast resistor going open circuit. It wasn’t until it failed completely that I found it.

I got one too. It drives and doesn't go beyond 30 mph. Waiting and saving money to do an LS1 engine implant.

Had this happen to my xj40 when water was in the fuel lines. Would come in and out

Good to know! Since this was 13 miles after topping up the tanks this has stuck in my mind. I fueled up at a local place that has ethanol free fuel. Used their 93 octane. 8 gallons across both tanks. One thing I didn't try was seeing if the issue exists running on the other tank. But fueling issue, dirty tanks, water, etc certainly need to be on my troubleshooting list

I would have guessed the Jaguar would have died in the forest 3 miles.

@@VortexGarage Thank you so much, I just bought 1982 series III XJ6. Looks like the same engine.
