Thanks so much!! I'm using the Takstar SGC-598 shotgun mic hooked up to the Zoom H2n - it's a decent mic setup! The Zoom has a built-in compressor/limiter which comes in handy for voiceovers.

You clearly don't know what a vocoder is It splits the incoming audio-your voice aka the modulator into separate frequency bands ( bandpass filters ) which then goes into an envelope follower The carrier ( synth signal ) is also split into corresponding frequency bands and the output of each of these bands is controlled by the envelope follower .

That's correct! A true vocoder has a ton more processing, and this just uses one sound source to modulate the carrier tone.
