The most unexpected thing is the Field sounds better of course, but it also puts in contrast the special charm of the original OP-1 sounds. Very enlightening to hear them side by side like this, congratulations and thanks for making such a well organized video
Oh yes the field sounds fantastic (so does the old OP-1). But having stereo tracks, a stereo reverb and ability to add tape noise/hiss and grit with the new records is just unbeatable. Thanks for the feedback!
My WISHLIST for OP-1 Field UPDATES (please fill in your own withlist too): * Zero crossfade point when lift/drop (at least as an option. * Pan sounds (synths) before recording onto a tape track - Currently we can only "effectively" pan drum sounds. But would be great to be able to pan sounds on the tape-view (where you set the recording level = red meter). So you record a sound in a specific panned position. Pressing the orange knob could turn the orange knob into a pan-knob instead. Super easy to add and a great way to make use of the new push knob functionality. Yes, you can already pan sounds in the mix view, but that's panning the whole tracks, which is not the same. You might want to have one sound on the left and one sound on the right on ONE single track (T1 or whatever). ;) * Stereo delay - also make more different delay types like you get on the Novation Summit. Lo-fi delays, BBD, ping pong etc. * Lift more than 22 sec. Please give us the ability to lift more audio data, it's super helpful when creating larger arrangements and editing. * Audio over bluetooth - Ability to send audio to wireless bluetooth headphones. I don't know if it's possible with the onboard low energy-circuit. You can send audio over usb-c cable directly to the iPhone though...which is super neat for mixing down tracks onto your phone. ;) * undo / redo functionality (probably the hardest to implement of the above)
32 bit gives it so much more dynamic range and that's where all that punch and attack definition is coming from, it should also be noticeable on filter sweeps and stuff where you have evolving sounds because of the dynamic range. Very cool video! Thank you!
Indeed the higher bitdepth and improved converters, speakers etc all makes for a 100% better impact and experience. Gonna make some more elaborate beats with it tomorrow. 💎🥁
@@MattiasHolmgren can’t wait to see, such a great creative tool. I just recently got the OP-1 used to test it out before buying a Field, and I have spent everyday with it non stop lol. Hopefully they’re making the Field in high quantities!
it's just fantastic in my opinion, I would buy it without any doubt if I had the budget for it...I am never going to sell my original op-1 to buy the op-1 field, I just have to start saving for it
@@MattiasHolmgren yeah, I make big emotional bonds with my instruments in general for me none of my synths are some new tech/toy that the next shiny thing can replace ... thats why I rarely buy but when I do I keep them, but of course, there is also the economic reason why I can't buy anything and everything that comes out 😂... thank you for the great video take care my friend ✌😉
Don't like to admit, but damn...the OP-1 Field sound beautiful! I'm hooked, just on the 'Mother' reverb and the adaptation of revised sounds/soundscapes, which those two elements alone have turned my perspective on its head.
I feel the same, thanks. I made this video because I feel its important to hear them side to side and get some insight on what you get. I still feel both OP-1 and OP-1 field is a great investment. Original OP-1 has a unique lofi sound to it, and the new one is overall superior in its ”broadness” of sound capabilities. TE just added a Vocoder to it, which is a great addition. I didn’t have a vocoder except via software so thats a win! 👌☀️😄
I think the best way I'd describe it, is if you want a more lo-fi feeling, go with the original, but if you want a more polished sound, go for the new one
True, but the new one can also get gritty and dirty with the tape recorder. You can go all hifi or lofi with Op-1 field…. But to get the true old (original) Op-1 sound, get the old model. 👌🎉🍿
Despite your initial setup, it sounds like the levels are not matched. The Field is mixed louder in your comparison, so the sound has more punch. With different output levels, it's not always easy to tell if two sources are equal.
Excellent demo! I wonder why TE didn’t bother to make a video like this. I also wonder why we’re still stuck with a mono delay on a $2000 device in 2022. Who is using mono delays and WHY? They’ve had 10 years to add a stereo delay and we still don’t have it? Thank you for mentioning the key getting stuck, it shows that the price is high because it’s artificially inflated, not because the workmanship is premium.
Hi thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I try to answer questions from the community...and questions that I ask myself before buying stuff, to know what the gear is like... I bet TE have plenty of updates in stock for the OP1-field so hopefully we can see some cool additional stuff coming to it soon. Including several new delay types...which is my nr.1 wish. ;) The cpu seems very snappy and capable of plenty more. Thankfully I haven't experienced any more "stuck key" situations, it happened once. I guess they cut all these buttons and knobs with precision... so they shouldn't be wiggly, or let in fluid easily... instead they are too tight so they get stuck. At least that's what it looks like on the Octatrack mk2...it has two buttons that gets stuck from time to time. Very annoying for a brand new device that costs....a...l...o...t.
Mine and others do not have stuck keys. The build quality is top notch. It’s £2000 because it’s designed and made by a small company. No of the shelf components, it does soooo much and fits in my backpack. Get over it and shop Behringer…their instruments can sound good too.
Oh yeah, once you played with the OP-1 field in it's most HIFI mode it's just sooo crystal clear. But you can also go super dirty with the OP-1field by using some of the new tape recorders like vintage reel, or Porta 4-track or mini disc. ;) I've also been hooking it up with my iPHone and it's super useful to be able to sample to / from the OP-1 field. Like if you want to do an instagram video recording the audio from the OP-1 field into the phone at the same time you shoot the video, it just works. Same thing if you want to sample from the iPHone into the OP-1 field, it's a quick thing!!! Love this feature!
Thanks for making this video! I notice in the gain comparisons section that the OP-1 (OG) level indicator is displaying just one dot. This happens when the tape input knob is not turned up. The volume knob on the unit can be cranked to 11 but if the tape input is down, you won't get full volume out of the synth. Regardless, I'm still stoked to get the Field after this kidney deal goes through.
Hey Vincent, thanks for writing. Notice both tape levels at 01:48. The tape inputs (red level meter on the top right side) are set to the exact same level for the track. I also had the track (T4) mixer set to the same level on both units. Drive was also set to the same value 12. ;) So all possible levels were set exactly the same on the OP-1 and the OP-1 field. The field is tremendously louder. Good luck on the kidney deal. ;) Seriously, I wish it was way cheaper so more people could experience this wonderful playground of sounds. ;(
They are both great devices, OP-1 field is obviously more versatile and "broad" in it's sound spectrum. But OP-1 with external effects is a killer too! Price is high, but there is nothing like it on the market. Though I'm not defending their price, I wish it was €800 so everyone could experience the creative touch.
Great video Mattias, enjoy your doodling during the high reverb ( Mother) parts... nice sounds... I really want to spend some good time with my OP-1 Field now... it seems to me they took a really nice musical Swiss army knife and just took it to a whole new level.
Thank you for the clear and helpful video. I am curious if you know anything about that hiss from the original OP-1, how it can be fixed or managed. Can the audio jack be replaced? or is it just the sound the device makes. Thanks!
The hiss is a feature for the lofi vibe, not a bug. 😂 Seriously, It didn’t bother me so far in mixes. Just make sure to get good level when recording to OP-1 tape.
That reverb…”It’s…uh…not really comparable”🤣🤣🤣. I love my original, but even hearing suggestions that the spring reverb has “character” are pretty hard to handle. It is, in a word, brutal, as is the speaker. Nice demo. All of the new Field features are incredibly desirable to have in a portable, self contained production device. It comes down to cash, but this is on my wish list. Just being able to drop in high resolution stereo stems changes its scope.
haha yeah Chris, it's a totally different ballpark. But I wanted to show what you have "as reverb" on the old unit, and what the new one brings. ;) Oh yeah, the stereo tracks is a killer and very welcome. I just wish we get the ability to pan synth sounds before recording them, so one can pan a synth to the right on T1, and then record an overdub with a synth to the right on the same track - T1. It should be possible with the same red knob in the tape view. SO we can just press the knob and it swaps to control panning rather than volume. That would be helpful!
@@MattiasHolmgren , no panning or option for mono in would be a deal breaker for me at this point. I think sometimes the TE guys have to go back to Audio Engineering 101🙄 Pretty unbelievable oversight…I hope they can fix it.
@@MattiasHolmgren , I guess a temporary workaround would involve setting up your left right balance going on, presumably a vocal or instrument track you wanted mono could just exist dead centre (dual mono???). Sound on sound would still allow stereo layering on top of that particular “monoized” track, I guess. I always wished that the OP-1 original version could apply some stereo imaging on individual tracks other than panning them hard. A fifth track would really help to expand the soundstage more naturally, but…never going to be a possibility🤣 I end up using the stereo delay on the output, which I usually like but it can be very hard to manage.
@@christopherecatalano using the mixer to pan tracks is what I've been doing on OG-1 (original OP-1). I have like T1, T2 dead center, than pan T3 25% left and T4 25% right...and such. That's like the way on the OG-1. But now on OP-1 field which has the stereo tracks, it would be superb to set how the recorder should input the sound (in the stereo field....panning) onto the track. Which would let you set exactly where in stereo space you want to record a synth sound. Oh, while I'm at it, it would be super wonderful to be able to set the stereo width also for the incoming sound. ;) hehehe true stereo panning. ;) That way we can make full use of the stereo field and get better placement on sounds when overdubbing onto the same stem / track.
I had the OG for 7 years and then got the refreshed version about a year ago. For my use case the OG works well but the Field looks very nice. Most of my work is done in Ableton and I’m happy with that atm. Cheers and thanks
@@paulheartsongs thanks for sharing your OP story. I'm also definitely using the OPs in combo with the DAWs for further editing and processing. Since it's a nightmare to edit on the OP1s. ;)
Do you mean a patch from the OP-1 field and you want to find that one on the original OP-1? I don't think they have the exact same patch library. OP-1 field has a ton of new presets.
Thanks so much for the video - great to hear the comparison. Would be so interesting to hear a comparison with op1 going through bluebox reverb against op1 field…can’t afford the op1 field but I have a bluebox!!
Greetings. I was hesitant to post my question where it properly belongs, but the last post there was 1 year ago...I thought you'd never see it. So, if you please, in your Union of Minilogue XD & Omnisphere 2.6, I have a question. I see that the 2 devices are sync'd. The Audio we're hearing, is that the XD or are we hearing only Omnisphere 2 emulating the XD? Thanks for permitting me to barge in, OFF TOPIC.
Hi Mark, haha no worries. ☕🌞 Oh you mean this old clip? - th-cam.com/video/_vnSZMYTSzA/w-d-xo.html Yes, the sound in that video on using Minilogue XD as a hardware controller for Omnisphere 2, the sound was all coming from Omnisphere 2 (emulating the sound engine / oscs of Minilogue XD) So it's pretty good emulated oscs in Omnisphere. If you make a brand new comment on an old video I will see the comment at the top of my comments-list. But if you respond to some other comment in a video I might miss that comment. It's super hard to notice those comments. But new comments get to the top of my list. ;) Thanks for writing Mark!
@@MattiasHolmgren Seeing as how you are ONE LIVER short at this OP-juncture, I will send a new post to the XD/OMNIS-2 Video. I have one other question, but want to get my OFF TOPIC SELF out of here, as a courtesy to you and your followers.
Hey EZBOT! Oh yes, 32 bit goodness! superb feature to be able to get that lofi fat tape grit with the different recorder options…Bet the new cpu will be able to handle some juciy updates in a near future too. OP-1 field seems very capable. Love your content by the way! 👌☕️🥁🥳
@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you! Your videos are fantastic and so helpful, you do great work. I am excited to get my OP-1 Field, I sold my original one fortunately to a friend so I still see it around. Ordered the Field the day it was announced. I am stoked for these juicy updates, lets see what TE can do :)
Haha, you do realize I had the mic running + tons of bg noise from the Ninja V camera display fan hiss = not very clean samples. 🤣😉 + audio compression via YT. Congrats to your new lofi drumset. 😂
Hi Mattias. What is synth syhnthesis patches in the op1? I undestarn that I can load Max Synth Sampler patches = 42. But whats is Max Synth Synthesis patches = 100?
Hi, the Op-1s have different sound playback engines. There is a sampler and there are multiple synth engines. The devices can stores more synth patches since they contain less data. Sample patches on the other hand contain audio files which can be long and heavy in memory. Makes sense? ☀️😃
@@MattiasHolmgren good, I think many will be happy about more videos on the subject. especially if they will be with that many thought in it. Keep it up! 😊
@@MattiasHolmgren true. That means basically a win -win. You get the possibility to show many peoples how amazing your content is and we can satisfy our hunger on op-1 content. Until the next video, see ya.
Yeah you can’t beat a side by side comparison and I like that you even took the time to tweak both OP-1s to generate pretty much the same type of sound, for a variety of sounds. Very scientific!
Yeah Field sounds like Plate / Hall kinda thing with tons of modulation to soften the feedback. OG is indeed a LoFi spring model reverb. Undo would be a dream on these devices *** dreaming *** 🥳
Well, thanks a lot. Now I don't want the op-1 anymore :) And the field is a bit outside of my budget. The reverb demo kind of sealed it. Such a lovely sound from the field!
@@MattiasHolmgren Reminds me of what you can achieve with the Microcosm pedal. That one's much cheaper, so I'm looking to buy one when the time is right and I have all the other gear I need first. Landed on your video because I'm looking for a sampler to pair with my Syntakt and I'm having some doubts about the obvious choice, the digitakt because it's monophonic... Tack för den fina demonstrationen!
@@MattiasHolmgren hey man, appreciate the feedback! I’m open to other options, I’ve just always thought that the OP-1 looks so inviting and I dig the compact, all-in-oneness. And with the field coming out and making used OGs cheaper, it’s finally got me really curious about expanding my home producing that direction. Thanks!
Nope, but you can emulate velocity sense by attaching gyro to amplitude of synth/ sampler = tilt to adjust volume. It works beautifully since its a very detailed and fine gyro. 👍🍿🥳
very interesting video. It helped me decide to get a op1 field. Im curious to know why do you still have the original op1? Do you like using both at the same time or is it a lofi quality sound kind of thing?
Oh, I kept the original OP-1 because its classical in its sound and Its fun to have both running with different sounds when u perform. Yes one reason I keep it is also the classical lofi sound. But I might sell it eventually we will see. Thanks for the feedback, always happy to hear what videos you guys enjoy from my content! ☀️😄☕️
I know the OP-1 field is a little thinner, but what about the knob height? If you had them both laying flat, including the knobs which would be taller?
The knobx of the Op-1 field is some millimeter taller when laying flat. the enclosure of the field is thinner, but the buttons proptrude a bit more to make up for it. The field feels more solid, the old one looks more coherent as a piece. Though I do love the style of the new one too. They are nice in their own way. Same with the displays. All in all the OP1 field looks more elegant and refined.
You are welcome Nicolas. Both devices are super fun to use. Albeit the price, OP-1 field just got an update that makes it velocity sensitive, apperently the gyro is so sensitive that it could be used to register micro vibrations and work as a registrator for velocity. I did a youTube shorts showing the updated OP-1 field. Give it a spin th-cam.com/users/shorts0n6WTemKSF4?feature=share
great demo! can the field be used for microtonality? that is, can you set up the pitches so that e.g. D is +12 cents from equal temperament, d# is - 23 cents, etc for each of the 12 pitches and then they are playable from the keyboard?
Hi Dante, you can adjust the master pitch up/down in cents or notes (semitones). Thats only mastet tuning though. But you can use a drum sampler and have whatever pitch setting you want on each key (slice of the full wavefile) = whatever scale you want. 😉🥁💎
Hi Evan, it was a quick beat I tossed up inspired by the moment. Yes only stock sounds! 🥁🥳 they are fabulous! Kick snare was freestyle while hihat that goes in / out was sequenced and then I adjusted velocity (red record volume) while recording the seq. Quick tip to make dynamics happen on stuff while recording.😁☕️
@@MattiasHolmgren it certainly looks one beautiful machine and it must be a little bit strange if you went from the OG-1 (which I own) to this newie...same same but different. I'll not be buying one due to never enjoying the tape workflow, but I do love seeing how TE have really been done such a good job on updating/improving something that's so cherished whilst keeping the OG-1's charm alive. (if/when the op-z gets a remodel field version...my words will definitely not be so generous haha)
The level meter on the field seems to be peaking a lot on the drums? Maybe it should have been dialled down lower. Thought I noticed some added distortion from clipping?
Thanks for your review Mattias. Can the Field record midi. That was one of the features I missed most on the original. When you play something nice on the go and record it on the OP-1 and can load it as midi into a program to change the instrument for a composition that would be awesome.
the og op-1 has a tone to the sound that people will be trying to replicate/achieve in the future. kinda like an sp 404 or an mpc xl2000 or older mpc models
Absolutely. 🥳OG is Very crisp and lofi. 💚The OP-1 field is different, sounds more like a hifi audio interface (if you run the high quality tape 32bit signal path). 🌱The reel-to-reel, porta and MD are fun to play with… but not necessarily like their real counterparts. 🥳🎹
Great review, good info, didn’t know about delay in mono??? For sure needs to be updated for home much steel hype they had on this unit lol I just bought my preorder fingers crossed I get one this year!!!
Fingers crossed Zachary, yeah the OP-1 Field seem to sell out extremely quickly. My bet is that TE will release some sweet updates soon, but the current delay really needs some love to make use of the full stereo system of the tapes tracks. ;)
I just find it so silly that if TE knocked the price down to 1K they’d probably sell x1000 the amount of units. Yes, smaller profit margin but tonnes more sold to offset that 🤷🏽♂️
I thought that originally too, but then realized that TE is a super small boutique company. It’s much easier to maintain a low volume high margin product for the 60 some odd people that make up the company.
Although I must admit having something so small to make music on is very tempting ,but then we come to price I believe 2000 dollars for the op1 field ,if I had that cash I would be looking at getting a top workstation synth ,with all the edit functions quantise , copy paste ,undo recording etc ,or I would go for a top synthesiser .It seems very overpriced .
Kurzweil K2700 is an alternative 😁 but its a collossus. Yeah, Op1 is definitely not for every1. Overpriced indeed. Wish the new cpu can handle awesome new updates though for better editing etc.
I cant tell the audio difference. :P I like the original style better too, field seems pieced together, while the original seems much more refined, i dont like the plastic looking ends on the field.
Great video!! You are comparing the Mother reverb on the Field vs the Spring reverb on the OG. Those are 2 different reverb engines. The Field also have the Spring reverb, so it is more fair to compair both the Spring engines. Other than that, thanks for the comparison 🙏.
Haha I did indeed. But that Spring reverb is the only reverb you have on OP1, thus I feel its a fair comparison. Because its the ”best” reverb of both devices! That’s at least what I personally would want to know. 😄 Happy to hear you enjoyed the clip. I’ll cover more in the next clip.
The one specific thing I can compare the new reverb to is NI Reaktor 5's "Space Master 2.0 on "Church Rear" setting. I really like that utility and I use it almost exclusively as FX sends for my digital and analog hardware synths and as a VST plugin for my DAWs alike. (I run it of a small laptop with an external DAC). I always missed the fact that so few hardware FX processors are capable of the same lusheous, voluminous reverb, devoid of the higher frequency hissing which ruins the sound of so many reverb pedals (Behringer Dual Digital Reverb pedal is a great example of that high frequency ruining the experience, BOSS's version is a bit better but not by much). Turning off the high frequency part of the spectrum makes the sound extremely muffled. So it's definitely a nice addition to the new OP-1.
Oh never tried the Reaktor specific reverb except for Kontakt reverbs. I really like the Valhalla suite of reverbs. Valhalla Supermassive also just got two new modes to check out!!! Also enjoy the Chroma Verb in Logic and the reverb on the Hologram Microcosm. Indeed these massive muffled bloom reverbs are incredible useful, especially for ambient and also for making a mix big with big difference (in space) between instruments. Mother is a great addition. Hope for more new effects / variations (like ping pong and lofi delay modes) to make use of the stereo.
@@MattiasHolmgren But it's almost 1K! Isn't it better to just go with Poly's Beebo in that case at half price? Not only do you get lots of FX besides reverb but you have a digital modular synth with a touchscreen.
Did TE send the unit to you for review or did you purchase? If not would you purchase over original? Good review BTW. Seems there are not many truly mobile devices these days that are light and last along time on battery power.
No I bought all TE gear myself, I have no contact or sponsorship with them. Lack of reverb and mono only was a bummer on the original. The new one can sound old AND new thats what I like about it. ☀️
IMO up to 3:46 the op-1 field sounds like a toy keyboard compared to the original one. It seems like 1 voice channel, where the next note, kills the previous one's ending. The original one is more natural. After that, the field sounds gorgeous, and the screen is much better.
The field is superior by far in sound. It is polyphonic (or mono / legato) if u want. The screen has more pixels, but side to side the old screen is beautiful too. Very deep colorful display.
Yeah price is insane, but if the original OP1 is a useful tool for you, the upgrade might be a good investment. Resell value is great too on these. I don’t think there’s another synth ever in my studio thats been so versatile, easy to pick up and record (into the daw) or on the go. But for arranging its always best to transfer into the daw. Direct record to a iphone or ipad via usb cable is also awesome.
Am I drunk or do the new reverb sound beautiful and very very nice at the same time ? Wow, but I believe it will be a problem if you record it into tape as a loop. It will cut of i think. Thumbs up for your high quality review. 👍🏽
Hey, the new reverb is gorgeous indeed and will fullfill and web ambient music makers dream (plenty of those on YT). The "cut reverb" when tape looping is a feature 😄☕ THanks for the kind feedback! 👌
If you don't want it to cut off you can turn off loop and record past the end of the bar, then when you record something else on the tape it will have the reverb tail there too from the previous section. or if you loop record the tail from the end will be at the start of the loop so it loops nicely. Some creative options are possible for sure.
Haha, Yeah I was just kidding. 😂 I always record past end, and stop when the sound has rung out a bit ”in the middle of the section” that way the sound doesnt cut off. 👌☀️🥁
Yeah, I sold my liver to buy the OP-1field. Nah seriously, I had the OP-1 for quite some time and consider it one of my most fun instruments to play/record, so it was a no-brainer to save up and grab the new one. The OPs are really more like instruments than they are to be compared with Digitakts, Octatracks, Circuits, Maschines or whatever. So if it's an inspiring piece of gear which helps you bring your musical ideas to life (without effort) I say go for it. ;) Lol, yeah hoping for my channel to explode one day too. 😄 Anyways, I hope TE will bring more new STEREO effects (delay...yes) very soon because I bet the new CPU can handle them without effort. The interface is super snappy so I guess there's tons of more power under the hood for future updates. Switching between the projects (read: tapes) is super fast on OP-1 field, which is a great bonus. Cheers Karl!
@@MattiasHolmgren Haha, yeah, they are not cheap. :) Yeah, all-stereo fx would be great. Great to have that new stereo reverb at least, it sound really good imo!
@@KarlandGuitarl oh yes, the Mother reverb is indeed the wet dream of any ambient composer. You see plenty of videos on YT with people hooking the OP-1 to their favourite external fx pedal for smearing washed out bloom reverbs. This is nice fix for that! ;)
It’s probably subtle, but there is a big difference in punch and crispness if you know what to listen for. Thanks glad u enjoyed my OP-1 field clip. More is coming!
Fear not, the original is still awesome, just bundle it with a really great stereo fx processor / DAW and you have a killer combo. I will never sell my OG-1. 👌
Yeah there are definitely other ”much cheaper” gear out there which can do similar stuff (like an iPad with awesome apps) but the OP-1 field is packed with awesome features, albeit some drawbacks…like only 4 tracks, no velocity keys. I hope they will become more affordable… or maybe Behringer makes a copy (like they do with all other synths)… 😂🥳🎁
@@MattiasHolmgren You have made some good points, and I’m sure this product has some real innovations and improvements. The price seems prohibitive, but we shall see.
I much prefer the artwork on the LCD on the original. Just so iconic and cool af. I hate that they've changed it. Also the classic colours on the knobs bright blue green white orange the new muted colours are shit. The buttons on the left have lost all their colours too. Why'd they have to fuck with it like that? The metal is cool but its a different colour :/ Just give it the new cool features and improvements to the sound and that but keep the classic iconic look everyone fucking LOVED. One thing they should have added was a built it radio antenna.
The original is indeed stellar in its color scheme and design. The new one is delicate in the design in another more ”purified” way. The OP-1 field has a built in antenna :). I wish they had stereo delay on release though. It will probably come in an update. But they had many years to refine and perfect things. The display on the new one is stellar too and you can adjust brightness to make it easier to use it in diff environments. 💎👌🥁
I already have the OG device and tbh, I'd much rather buy 2k worth of plugins that can do x1000000 the job this machine can do. The improvements aren't worth the price-tag, imo. After 10 years they should've done much much better. I can't believe it still has 4 tracks...that's a shame and an embarrassment. I would pay 2k for an OP-2 with 16 tracks and more features, but not for this one. It even looks like the first one, but ironically uglier...what a shame. Back in the day I bought mine for $800, and I still love the OP-1. I thought it was a bit pricy but worth the novelty. For 2k this device isn't novel or worth it imo. They should've kept the pocket operator mindset(accessible+innovative)...so disappointing. ps: Love your videos, thanks Mattias!
The design is growing one me. But OG color scheme stands out! I can totally agree it would have been a good choice to make it at least 8 track. After working on it for a few days now I totally see the benefit of having the new recorder tape machine choices. Since a ton of people on YT always record the Op-1 via a tape to get hiss, grit and wobble. I did a few tracks with the different machines and it does add a nice lofi vibe to the crystal clear 32bit engine. Very cool addition. Same with the mother reverb, a very welcome addition since everyone is hooking the OG to a strymon. 🤣 I wrote a lengthy post on reddit regarding my observation on the price of the Op-1 field and as a product developer myself its clear how they were thinking. Its a pity the old one was sooo hyped to the sky and price skyrocket, because that basically sets the mark for any sequal release. Since they already seen market will pay for it. Now I am hoping for a ton of sweet updates on the delay, effects and maybe ability to lift more than 22sec of data. We should be able to life all 4 tracks for 2min IMo. But we’ll see.🤘 I just installed the 1.1.4 update from 2022-06-01, which makes it possible to have screen brightness at 125% and gives 30% lower keyboard latency, new mini disc seek etc. which is nice! Glad you enjoy my content! 💎🥳☕️☀️
Much as I love the sound generating technology behind these pocket interfaces, I curse them for creating today's sterile, dull endless-loop EDM that's played at every festival
Yeah also an option. I have several ipads abd the iPad Pro 12”, its fun running Korg Gadget, Logic iPad etc. But not the same quick and satisfying workflow of the OP-1 field though. 🤷♂️😄 Check the new Yamaha SeqTrak announced yesterday. Some competition for the TE type of devices. 😄💯
Thank you for this Video Mattias - always great! The Original OP-1 is now available for about € 780 on the used market here in Austria. What do you think? That's a good deal right? Or is the Original OP-1 just too old for 2024. By now i use a Macbook Air M2 with Ableton Live, controlled with Launchpad X and Arturia MiniLab 3 Here is an example of our work: th-cam.com/video/eYtMDZ16zHg/w-d-xo.html All the best for your future work 🤩
Hey Juergen, OP-1 has a very charactaristic sound, so if you like it you should def. go for it. It's a super fun device. And for arranging with the OP-1 you will probably end up recording it into your DAW (Ableton Live in this case) because arranging on the OPs is a bit of a pain....no undo. But building small song foundations, beats and sound design is lovely on the OP-1...but the field and the OG-1. That's how I look at it. Happy to hear you enjoy my video! ;)
For me, that means.. the original one is actually nothing worth compared to the field. Its a shame the prices are so high. The field should be priced as the original and the original the half.
£2000 for this, it might sound good but not in a million years would i pay that amount for this. Thought the original was way over priced, this is insanity.
@FullClippz fair dues to you and i'm in no way telling anyone how to spend their money it just wojldn't be me. You did say one thing and its not the first time i've heard it, and that is, you use it as a sketch pad. Thats one hell of an outlay for a scetch pad. For that kind of money you should be able to turn out 'oven ready' tunes. For two grand you could buy some serious studio fire power. Just my opinion means kothing to anyone else and good luckk to you if you go ahead and buy it, i hope you have many hours of fun with it and in the end thats what it's all about.
@@garyhendrie4001 The OP-1 works as a sketch pad but the synths are unique enough to use in actual songs you would make in a DAW. I would never pay $2000 for one though.

My WISHLIST for OP-1 Field UPDATES (please fill in your own withlist too):
* Zero crossfade point when lift/drop (at least as an option.
* Pan sounds (synths) before recording onto a tape track -
Currently we can only "effectively" pan drum sounds. You might want to have one sound on the left and one sound on the right on ONE single track (T1 or whatever). ;)
* Stereo delay - also make more different delay types like you get on the Novation Summit.
You can send audio over usb-c cable directly to the iPhone though...which is super neat for mixing down tracks onto your phone. ;)
* undo / redo functionality (probably the hardest to implement of the above)
you can pan the recording thing though its shift plus red knob
@@qlyde the original OP-1 is also super fun to play with. I will probably keep both because they serve different sound scapes.
it's just fantastic in my opinion, I would buy it without any doubt if I had the budget for it...I am never going to sell my original op-1 to buy the op-1 field, I just have to start saving for it
Agree, the original is a classic!

yeah, I make big emotional bonds with my instruments in general for me none of my synths are some new tech/toy that the next shiny thing can replace ... thats why I rarely buy but when I do I keep them, but of course, there is also the economic reason why I can't buy anything and everything that comes out 😂... thank you for the great video take care my friend ✌😉
Don't like to admit, but damn...the OP-1 Field sound beautiful!
I'm hooked, just on the 'Mother' reverb and the adaptation of revised sounds/soundscapes, which those two elements alone have turned my perspective on its head.
Yeah OP-1 sound engine is stellar. 🥁🎉👌
I’d 99.999999% of the time rather see this kind of video than talk complaining about the price. 🎹
Thanks for this side by side! I'm even more excited to get my hands on the field after this
Oh yeah, OP-1 Field is an awesome sound design / music / sampling / sketchpad!
💎👌☀️🥁
im a bit late but what is that mini synth in the background of 10:33 with the patch wires coming out?
Oh it’s an 0-coast from Make Noize.
Thank you for this! Teenage engineering sadly doesn't seem to understand that not everyone is tech savvy/knowledgeable in engineering lol. Bless you.
Cheers, happy to inspire and ease up OP-1 usage. 🥳🎉🥁
Levels matched more closely in a new video : th-cam.com/video/BGKDIaP4hW8/w-d-xo.html

Great video, wish I never saw it lol. Never thought there was anything lofi about the OP-1 but after hearing the Field i'm shocked.
Oh yeah, once you played with the OP-1 field in it's most HIFI mode it's just sooo crystal clear. But you can also go super dirty with the OP-1field by using some of the new tape recorders like vintage reel, or Porta 4-track or mini disc. ;)
I've also been hooking it up with my iPHone and it's super useful to be able to sample to / from the OP-1 field.
Good luck on the kidney deal. ;) Seriously, I wish it was way cheaper so more people could experience this wonderful playground of sounds. ;(
@@MattiasHolmgren Oh yeah missed that. Wonder why the indicator isn't bumpin'
My thoughts are they are very similar in core sound. Just a huge price difference. Thanks for your thoughts and cheers.
Thanks, yeah OP-1 field is definitely an awesome tool for composition. On the go as well as in the studio. Im having super fun! 🎉🥁😄
This video just sold me on the Field... Gonna have to hop on the next batch !
Yeah I just saw it's out of stock. ;/
Should be super easy to implement.
Oh, while I'm at it, it would be super wonderful to be able to set the stereo width also for the incoming sound. ;) hehehe true stereo panning. ;)
That way we can make full use of the stereo field and get better placement on sounds when overdubbing onto the same stem / track.
Thank you for the comparisons! Great information.
Glad you enjoyed my OP1 comparison clip Paul!
I had the OG for 7 years and then got the refreshed version about a year ago. For my use case the OG works well but the Field looks very nice. Most of my work is done in Ableton and I’m happy with that atm. Cheers and thanks

Sounds like the Field Mother Reverb is a Plate model, whereas the OG Reverb was a Spring model … Do you think?
No ‘Undo’ function is a shame …
Yeah Field sounds like Plate / Hall kinda thing with tons of modulation to soften the feedback. OG is indeed a LoFi spring model reverb. Undo would be a dream on these devices *** dreaming *** 🥳

very interesting video. It helped me decide to get a op1 field. Im curious to know why do you still have the original op1? Do you like using both at the same time or is it a lofi quality sound kind of thing?

I know the OP-1 field is a little thinner, but what about the knob height? If you had them both laying flat, including the knobs which would be taller?
The knobx of the Op-1 field is some millimeter taller when laying flat. the enclosure of the field is thinner, but the buttons proptrude a bit more to make up for it. The field feels more solid, the old one looks more coherent as a piece. Though I do love the style of the new one too. They are nice in their own way. Same with the displays. All in all the OP1 field looks more elegant and refined.
thank you for the comparison
You are welcome Nicolas. Both devices are super fun to use. Albeit the price, OP-1 field just got an update that makes it velocity sensitive, apperently the gyro is so sensitive that it could be used to register micro vibrations and work as a registrator for velocity. great demo! can the field be used for microtonality? that is, can you set up the pitches so that e.g.

I've not had any problem whatsoever with any of my OP-1s...field and OG. They both work fine since I bought them.
My bet is that TE will release some sweet updates soon, but the current delay really needs some love to make use of the full stereo system of the tapes tracks. ;)
If the original op-1 is good for Depeche Mode,it’s got to be good.
Haha absolutely Joel. Op-1 (original and the new field) rocks.
I just find it so silly that if TE knocked the price down to 1K they’d probably sell x1000 the amount of units. Yes, smaller profit margin but tonnes more sold to offset that 🤷🏽♂️
Totally agree, but I guess they don’t want to ruin the high price of OG-1 which is still the top selling music tech (at reverb.com)
There would be no profit obviously 🙄
I thought that originally too, but then realized that TE is a super small boutique company. It’s much easier to maintain a low volume high margin product for the 60 some odd people that make up the company.
They're not going to struggle to sell as many as they can make at $2k in the near future.
It's a large profit either way. How much you really think it cost to make this unit
Thank you

Thanks man very helpful. Still want an OP-1 Field. Still can’t afford one 😂.
You are welcome. Yeah it’s quite an investment. But a very solid sound sculpting and sampling machine!
OG looks way more appealing from the outside.
Both have their estetics.
in what languge digital is digital but original is oridinal?
I dunno what that even means 😃
🤔 Since you asked about a specific feature?...a real world test of the FM transmitter, range, etc. would be cool.
Good idea, thanks Ase! 👌☀️
About as long as a chimps arm.
I cant tell the audio difference. :P I like the original style better too, field seems pieced together, while the original seems much more refined, i dont like the plastic looking ends on the field.
I believe it’s aluminum but yeah I like the older design more, too
In reality the ends on the OP-1 field looks very polished and aluminium-ish. ;)
@@MattiasHolmgren thanks for the reaction! Yeah i understand your flow of thinking. Looking forward to the next video 🔥
You're the best Arne! ☕
@@MattiasHolmgren Hologram Microcosm? Have no experience with it. Will check it out now for sure.
I did a video on it here th-cam.com/video/m_qF0kdDflQ/w-d-xo.html
@@MattiasHolmgren But it's almost 1K! Isn't it better to just go with Poly's Beebo in that case at half price? Not only do you get lots of FX besides reverb but you have a digital modular synth with a touchscreen.
Or go with zoom ms70cdr also beautiful reverbs / delays multi effect super affordable. Im gonna make a video on it! Had it for a few years. ☀️☕️🥳🥁

Buy OP-1 Field (perfect circuit affiliate link): bit.ly/3SGpNMs
12:34 it sounds compressed as hell 🫣🫠
Oh yeah, wazzup with that? The video audio is indeed compressed and limited.
This is me~ LOL
😄🥁
The only thing that is not as good is taking away the expensive AMOLED for the ordinary backlit LED display.
Yeah old display was (is) superb. New one is brighter though.
Battery power (bright display, fast boot, access) and battery time (24h) is top notch on OP1-field. OG-1 also had great battery time. 🔋
@@MattiasHolmgren Congratulations on your OP-1F and thank you for review and response. Such a nice tool to carry anywhere and interact with.
@@MattiasHolmgren Yes, both are beautiful.
How about undo, in op-1 field?
Still no undo. Only the good old tape lift, drop function as a ”undo”.
@@MattiasHolmgren thanks
just the samples better ? :)
Lol, yeah those are indeed improved. 😂👌🎻
@@MattiasHolmgren just put the same sample in the old one 😂😂
Absolutely hilarious this thing costs as much as a new MacBook Pro (but it's slightly more portable)
Direct record to a iphone or ipad via usb cable is also awesome.
i love everything but that silver frame. I'd love an all matte black OP-1
Yeah different skins would be a cool feature. 🥳☕️
Man, that reverb….
… is lovely 😉
what you call a disadvantage in sound of OP1 is precisely an advantage because this sound is original..that's why I won't trade op1 for new devices
It’s not disadvantage, it’s different, OG OP-1 is lofi, and it’s totally fine. I love it too! 💪👌😄
@@MattiasHolmgren
yes, I agree, I wanted to say that if you remove this lo-fi quality, the device will lose its attractiveness..at least for me)
@ПавелЧистяков-е2ж yeah with lofi it becomes a different device indeed. I like both though. Extremely fun machines.
I’m waiting for a longer version
Hey, longer version (of what) are you waiting for? New video? The demo song? 🥳👌☕️
@@MattiasHolmgren no the op, teenage engineering need one with a bigger screen, and bigger keys I’ve got big fingers.
@@MattiasHolmgren as much as I’ve been fantasising getting one it’s too small for the price bump.
you have both? :O they seem really cool, but a bit too pricy for me, maybe one day if my TH-cam channel explodes, haha :) Great vid, thanks mattias
Anyways, I hope TE will bring more new STEREO effects (delay...yes) very soon because I bet the new CPU can handle them without effort.
This is nice fix for that! ;)
I don’t hear any more “punch” 90% of the times you say it has more punch. But maybe it’s just me. Good video
I do hear more volume.
It’s probably subtle, but there is a big difference in punch and crispness if you know what to listen for. Thanks glad u enjoyed my OP-1 field clip. More is coming!
This is a case of the emperor’s new clothes if I’ve ever saw one.
😂☕️
Got some Pat Metheny vibes with some melodies you played.
Thanks. I do love the works of Pat. 🙏💎
@@MattiasHolmgren 🙌
DAMNIT I JUST BOUGHT A USED Op-1 NOW I WANT THE FIELD. WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS HAPPEN?! 😭😭
Fear not, the original is still awesome, just bundle it with a really great stereo fx processor / DAW and you have a killer combo. I will never sell my OG-1. 👌
Like I have money to burn for this when there is so much available. I’ll admit it’s compact however.
Yeah, I’m not trying to defend their insane pricesetting though. Its wicked. ☕️ Hope they shuffle out insane updates to the firmware though…
So hard not to pull the trigger on this. Just because the money is in my bank doesn't mean I can afford it though.
Has TE got them back in the webstore? They’re like sold out all the time.
I wrote a lengthy post on reddit regarding my observation on the price of the Op-1 field and as a product developer myself its clear how they were thinking.
But we’ll see.🤘
I just installed the 1.1.4 update from 2022-06-01, which makes it possible to have screen brightness at 125% and gives 30% lower keyboard latency, new mini disc seek etc. which is nice!
Glad you enjoy my content! 💎🥳☕️☀️
@@MattiasHolmgren Appreciate the lengthy and well thought-out reply my man! I will check out the reddit post! Much love 🙏🏻💎
Much as I love the sound generating technology behind these pocket interfaces,
I curse them for creating today's sterile, dull endless-loop EDM that's played at every festival
;)
Hah "This is me!" very sexy :)
Haha yeah I just had to do it. It came naturally when presenting one after another. The heat of the moment is always best! 🥳😂🥁 good to see ya Alex!
For that price you buy an iPad Pro that offers you many more possibilities.
By now i use a Macbook Air M2 with Ableton Live, controlled with Launchpad X and Arturia MiniLab 3
Here is an example of our work: th-cam.com/video/eYtMDZ16zHg/w-d-xo.html
All the best for your future work 🤩
Hey Juergen, OP-1 has a very charactaristic sound, so if you like it you should def. go for it.
It's a super fun device. And for arranging with the OP-1 you will probably end up recording it into your DAW (Ableton Live in this case) because
arranging on the OPs is a bit of a pain....no undo.
But building small song foundations, beats and sound design is lovely on the OP-1...but the field and the OG-1.
That's how I look at it.
Happy to hear you enjoy my video! ;)
@@MattiasHolmgren thank you very much! I've seen a ton of videos now and think the OP-1 could complete my Setup nicely!
Dude. Stop whining. It’s a fair price to pay. You obviously have No Clue how much it costs to make products today.
@@Fluterra you pay this for op1 field and your a freakin idiot.
