Very interesting comparison. I appreciate seeing the graphs comparing all 3 burr sets. Other reviewers have talked about the differences, but your graphs clearly illustrate the improvement to be expected by upgrading to the Gen 2 burrs. I just placed my order with Fellow. For me, the price increase to the SSP burrs is not worth it according to the graphs you provided. Thanks for the video.
I really appreciate your efforts in testing the burrs. This is exactly what I needed to decide which burrs to purchase (or not). Initially, I was going to buy the 2nd gen grinder and the SSP burrs. Now, I am going with the 2nd gen grinder with the 2nd gen (default) burrs. You saved me about $200. I think the SSP burrs might not be noticeably different from the default gen 2 grinder burrs, for me and my coffee preferences ; mostly espresso brewing. Your data on this region of grind size indicates almost identical performance using SSP AND gen 2 burrs. THANK YOU! 😃
just purchased an ode gen 1 new on amazon for $199. i’d argue it’s a fantastic value with a set of burrs that will last a long time and provide a noticeable difference in taste since i’m used to buying coffee at costco and grinding it in advance. i appreciate what you have to say about the other burr sets, but i disagree with the notion that the gen 1 burr sets are terrible. When the ode 1 came out a few years ago the coffee community was all about the Ode and everyone enjoyed their coffee. nobody had negative things to say. it’s only now that there’s a new set of burrs out that people want to complain about the old ones
I'm curious to know about the gen 1 burrs that were tested here. Were they the gen1 or the gen 1.1? I ordered a gen 1.1 and want to know if it is worth upgrading to the gen 2. Thanks for a great review.
might have been a lot of work but the data you collected is extremely valuable for people like myself contemplating getting a gen 1 and upgrading. Lets just say you may have saved me 100ish dollars
thanks for this detailed video. well i actually got the opportunitty to get the gen 1.1 with ssp burrs for the same price as a gen 1.1 with gen 2 burrs. But your video made me doubt. don;t you think you could dialed the grind wiht ssp burrs so that it tastes mor fruity/acidic?
Steven, this is an excellent video! I've been contemplating getting an Ode for my mother. Gen 2 sounds like the one we'll go for :). Thanks for taking the time to create scientific content like this :). It's nice to see fun data published relative to the situation. This is a video I'll show my students at school for science fair preparation!
Also just bought the Gen 2 ode. I felt it was a better deal to buy the upgraded Gen 2 rather than buy a used gen 1 and paying extra for gen 2 burrs and still dealing with excess retention etc on the original nachine
Excellent, excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to measure the ground sizes. Really helped me in understanding the quality and consistency of this grinder.
Good test! Even taking the results broadly it's quite clear that Gen 1 Burrs = Hard No Gen 2 Burrs = Good! Comparable to SSP at much better value. SSP Burrs = Great if you already have them, upgrade to Gen 2 burrs if you do not.
Thank you for such detailed video. Would you share your usual v60 recipe? Water temperature. SSP burr setting . Ratio for med, light and dark roast. Total time. Much appreciated
My base setting (that I then adjust based on taste per coffee) : 205°F water, SSP Ode setting 7, 25g coffee, 400g water, ~3min total brew time. It varies quite a bit based on coffee, but that's a good start for me!
Thanks for this. Currently waiting on a Gen 2. Will see how all we like it, might buy the SSPs later. We’re coming from a crappy Cuisinart. I also brewed my first cup from using a V60 today. Comparing the V60 to our drip coffee maker I could tell a difference. Excited for the upcoming coffee journey.
Very helpful, thank you very much! I had no idea the difference between gen1 and gen2 burrs are so big! I have a gen1, and will be upgrading to the gen2 burrs, lets see
Another reviewer compared the Ode Gen 2, SSP and the Gorilla burrs, in taste tests, and found the SSP had more clarity, and the Gen 2 and Gorilla were fairly similar in having a fuller flavor, except he could distinguish a particular second flavor more with the Gorilla, but I don't know if it's worth $270 extra for the Gorilla, which is the price I saw online. I was wondering, are burrs protected by any type of patents, or even design patents? What is to keep one company from copying another company's burr design?
As another person commented there is a 1.0 and 1.1 burr in gen one. The 1.1 burr is the first attempt to solve the problem of not grinding fine enough and is claimed to improved the low end by 300 microns (whatever that means). How old is your gen one?
Thank you for this informative video and well presented results! The Ode 2 looks like a real winner for pour over and similar brewing methods. I am chasing info on burrs for a different project where I am modifying a KitchenAid Proline grinder for cold brew bulk grinding (12-16 ounces). Like you I see much more inconsistent grind size with coarse settings. The info comparing the three different burrs was enlightening. The OEM burrs on the KitchenAid are not great. I have a set of mini Mazzer burrs I will adapt to the KA grinder. Then I plan to get a set of SSP burrs to see how those work and how the range and consistency of the different burrs affect output. So seeing your work was inspiring!
Great Video! I have a Gen1 grinder with original burrs Your testing and data really helped me decide where I needed to go. Looks like I have a new grinder in my future😁

I've read that the SSP MP are really hard to dial when compared to the Gen2 burrs? How about consistency? If I do install the SSP MP on the Ode Gen2, how likely is that I'm going to get consistent brews? Another thing I read is that if the roasting has defects, the MPs are going to show it! I think the MPs would be more for analytical tasting and picking good coffee while the Gen2 burrs would be just to be happy and enjoy coffee almost all the time?
Super helpful. I've been underwhelmed by the Ode in general, which I've used for almost a year now. I typically experience inconsistency from cup to cup. I've been considering getting the gen 2 burrs and it's helpful to see how they've improved.
I upgraded to gen2 burrs and my current setup has a lot of less fines and tastes much better. However I hadnt aligned the original burrs and I did an alignment when upgrading so I unfortunately cant say which of the changes brought the most improvement. It is however likely that the alignment would reduce the amount of fines and although it is a hassle I would recommend doing it no matter which burrs one has.
Fantastic test, thanks for putting in the work with that sifter! For the original burrs, were you using the version 1.0 burrs or the version 1.1 burrs they have been shipping with the grinder for the past year or more? Sorry to throw a fourth burr in the mix!
Great review on the 3 burr sets. I mostly make pour overs. I’ve been wanting to upgrade from my Encore for a while. I almost bought an Ode early on but the reviews kept me away. I love clean tasting light roasts like Ethiopians, so I’m thinking Gen2 SSP is they way to go.
Great video. I appreciate how much time it took for you to make all the graphs but it was worth it to see the comparison. Have you tried using an app like Coffee Grind (ios) to measure the grind distribution? It is considerable faster. I would also be curious how the results of the app would compare with the sifting tests you did.
Appreciate the kind words. I have spent some time using the app from Coffee Ad Astra, thanks for bringing Coffee Grind to my attention! Now that I have the Kruve, that will definitely something to look into in the future.
Thanks for making a cool video. I was wondering if I should get the gen 2 or SSP burrs and now I think I'll get the gen 2 cause I like body I think and I don't know about acidity but I'm sure it'll be fine. If something better comes out in the future I can just upgrade anyways.
I could have SWORN someone on a video (maybe the buy with the beard in the kitchen , or the British guy?) said it was made in Italy. When I got my grinder yesterday the box said it was made in china. I will not knowingly buy Chinese stuff, for multiple reasons. But I guess I unknowingly did yesterday.
Would Gen 2 or SSP burrs share any flavor characteristics with that of pro coffee shop pour over? Is that what SSP does, produce coffee shop flavor profile at home?
Thank you so much for this. Any chance you will compare the Gen 2 to the Moccamaster KM5? I use a Moccamaster to make my coffee so not sure which to get.
@@HomeGroundsCoffee thanks! I recently got an ode with v1.1 stock burrs but have been struggling with the taste of sour/bitter over/under no matter what I do... your charts help explain why. Upgrade time!
Really enjoyed the video. Kind of what I was looking for! I think I made the right choice with SSP MPs for my DF64 considering I prefer clarity over body. Thanks and keep up the good work guys!
That wasn’t entirely accurate. As shown along with that graph, that only happened because the majority of grounds were beyond the limits of the Kruve sifter. So the peak wasn’t actually that good.
First, let me say thank you for this excellent video. Had I watched it before I bought the Fellow Ode 2 I'd ve passed on it. As both your distribution measurements and my horrible results confirm this grinder is entirely unsuitable for light grinds with pour over and especially aeropress.
Actually the gen 2 burrset was getting its flowers through out the entire video and it was shown to perform very similarly with the ssp’s which are a fantastic set of burrs. It was the gen one burrset that had the horrible graphs and sub par taste shown in the video. I would urge you to rewatch the video for clarification. Sorry to hear you having issues with your v2, maybe you’re just had really poor alignment out of the box for some reason. If you still have it id recommend manually aligning the burrs because mine has produced really good cups via aeropress straight out the box at the 4 setting with a dark roast i have at home for medium and light roasts I’d probably recommend going finer from there respectively. I just came here to see if I’m making the right decision to chase the diminishing returns of upgrading to the ssp upgrade.
Really appreciate the work you put into this review.. I've been looking to upgrade my grinder, and the Ode seemed like the perfect choice for me given the price and the fact that I wouldn't use it for espresso.. however, the gen 1 burrs definitely kept me away.. for $345 with the gen 2 burrs, the updated Ode seems like great value... I think I've narrowed my choices to the Ode v2 and the Lagom Mini with the moonshine burrs
I'm sorry, no offense, but it difficult to trust in a review when you received the product from the company to review. I need hear from somebody that put their money on it. However, great review, thanks!

Very thorough and informative. Great job helping decide which burrs to go with.
Excellent, excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to measure the ground sizes. Really helped me in understanding the quality and consistency of this grinder.
I would be very interested to see how the grinds of an Ode compare to a conical burr, specifically a Commandante.
Good test! Even taking the results broadly it's quite clear that
Gen 1 Burrs = Hard No
Gen 2 Burrs = Good! Comparable to SSP at much better value.
SSP Burrs = Great if you already have them, upgrade to Gen 2 burrs if you do not.
Completely agree!
This is excellent, very informative and helpful. Thanks so much!
Not sure if you mentioned it and I missed it but what were the SSP burrs calibrated to, 5 off chirp or 1?
They are calibrated to chirp just finer than 1.

Great video, very informative. Curious how they're calibrated - how many clicks off chirp on the grinders - are they all calibrated the same?
Yes they're all calibrated the same, just one click off chirp on each of them and aligned with the dry erase marker method.
@@HomeGroundsCoffeehow necessary is alignment within the brew range? I’ve gotten pretty mixed info about its importance.
Possibly going coarser leads to a less consistent shape of grind, and that can affect sifting as a measurement method, bc it's 2d and grinds are 3d
Do you think I would taste more flavour separation with the Gen 2 vs Comandante?
Can Gen 2 fitted on DF64 grinder?

Generally a good presentation, but the gen 1 burs actually give the most consistent result on the course grind, as they give the sharpest peak.
