I watched several videos about the Gen 2 but they all said pretty much exactly the same thing. I really appreciate that yours went through actually using them both on screen vs just talking about it. Your take was much more helpful for a potential buyer trying to see what it would actually feel and sound like on their counter. SUB!
Agreed. Such a well done video. I'm a noob looking to get my first grinder and was a bit turned off on the gen 1 after some research, but also put off by why a gen 2 would cost more than a gen 1. But this video both convinced me on the new cost being worth it, as well as educated me enough to decide this is probably the grinder for me.
what do you recommend to get instead? for about the same price?

I'm so glad these updates have been made! I ordered an Ode Gen 1 in March 2022 and 6 months later I exchanged it because of all of these issues and because the grinder kept jamming. I've had the replacement Ode Gen 1 since September and I still had the same issues as with the original grinder. I'm now in the process of exchanging my Ode Gen 1 for a Gen 2. Fellow is providing a store credit that I can then use to purchase the Gen 2. Fingers crossed that this $350 grinder is worth all the hassle!
Spot on review and perspectives. I fit precisely into the 1st perspective😎. With my Gen 2, most, but not all of my oily, dark roast beans descend into chamber...but I can live with that no problem. Would love it if Fellow followed up with their own bellows for the Gen 2.
thank you, i have been through so many reviews that seemed more like the person was trying to show how much more they knew about coffee gadgets than the person watching. This is the first video i seen that was clear, informative to the point and something i could base my decision from. My wife loves coffee, I do on occasion and my oldest son does on weekends. I thought it would be nice for them to enjoy their coffee a little more by being able to tune it in some but didnt want to spend $100-$200 dollars on a regret nor did I want to spend over $500. I finally settled on and ordered this V2 compliments of your explanation, I am now subbed and will be digging more into your content so thank you very much Sir! Oh and we have always enjoyed dark filtered coffee, any whole bean recommendations?

What would you recommend as my first flat burr grinder? Would the ode be a good entry or something with more range like the df 64?
As the owner of an Ode Gen 1, it makes me wish there was a trade in program with Fellow. The Gen 1 resale value is pretty much so low it's not worth selling in order to acquire a Gen 2 . So the Gen 1 becomes a beautiful paperweight UNLESS, you update it as much as possible to solve some of the issues inherent in the Gen 1. For me, the bean hopper has always been a real pain. Pushing those rogue beans down the slope borders on the ridiculous. So, for $10 I bought the Gen 2 hopper from the fellow website. Another $2 for the appropriate stainless steel screws (which are famously NOT included with the hopper) and the bean feed problem is solved. Next, $80 for the Gen 2 burrs. Better grind quality, solved. Finally static. RDT is free with the only drawback being the occasional "moist" bean getting hung up, even with the new and improved hopper slope. These 2 mods breathe new life into an otherwise beautiful, quality grinder.

Glad the algorithm recommended this. I just got a gen 2 as someone in the "enthusiast, but first nice grinder" camp, and initially experienced a lot of annoyances - the medium/dark-roast beans I used for seasoning were actually getting stuck in the hopper 75% of the time (but not for light roasts, or quantities
I purchased the Gen 2 recently a big upgrade for my inexpensive grinder I've been using. I use an organic Columbian whole been, which is a medium roast but it seems to be a little darker than medium. I experience occasional bottleneck in the hopper, so I made sure to spread them out around the sides of the popcorn preventer--I use 6 tablespoons of beans at a time--but the problem was even when they seem to flow into the chute, about 75% of the time the automatic shut off would quit while it was still grinding, leaving up to one half tablespoon of beans, and I would have to turn it on again. Since this is promoted as a single dose machine, I found this unacceptable and I returned the unit.
@H C Maybe I should try it again with a new unit, perhaps the sensor was defective. Do you find it the Gen 2 gives you a full spectrum of flavor and full body or is it more narrow in taste? In the limited amount of time I used it I found it wasn't as full a flavor as the inexpensive grinder, although I was also experiencing a bad batch of coffee at the time, and perhaps a failing a coffee maker.
@H C I think I did try to contact them, at least by phone, and they didn't answer. I followed a thread or two on Reddit about the issue, and while some had no problem, or had the opposite problem where it continued on too long after grinding was finished, others had the same issue as me, and didn't find a fix for it.
@H C Do you mean how long does the grinder stay on? I think maybe seven or eight seconds for 6 tablespoons of coffee beans, stopping before it was finished grinding. Or do you mean how many times did I let the Fellow customer service phone ring before I hung up?
@H C Actually now, I'm not sure if I tried to call them because they don't provide a telephone number on their website, and I didn't want to communicate through their website or email as I didn't buy it directly from them, but through Amazon. It's possible I found their number through a separate Google search, as I did just now, and they didn't answer, but I'm not sure. I will try calling that phone number to see if they do answer and can enlighten me about the early shut off of the grinder, in case I want to try it again. But If you look at Reddit, they seem to often make shipping and product mistakes such as putting the burrs in backwards or giving someone the SSP fburrs or the price of the regular unit, by mistake.
Great review. Need a new grinder. Would you recommend the ode gen 2 for filter and the K-pro hand for espresso or the Df64?
The one mod I'd like to see is someone make an even bigger hopper since it would be nice to be able to make a bigger batch for cold brew.

Like majority of changes but still don't get the catch cup and use of metal flaps. Would like to see standard S.S. catch cup similar to Xeoleo grinder.
I did the same thing, but with DF64s, having all the different SSP burrs in to figure out which I preferred and how they differed. ODE would be more cost effective, but I mostly do espresso (I did hear recently from someone who used their ODE for 2 years for espresso! apparently it struggles but has somehow survived, so far!).
That's what I'm saying man if this grinder did espresso it would be endgame

@@JusBThankful Nope, but if you have an MC4, the Shuricones are supposed to improve light roasts, maybe not much for the medium or darker roasts. Not sure how it does for coarser brew methods but should be alright, if you do a lot of pour overs / coarser brewing might as well get an ODE having two separate grinders makes it easier. 64mm SSP MP burrs I really like but sounds like the stock burrs are decent now!

Yes. Would love to look at the SSP cast v1 and v2 and the Gen 2 stock burrs. I recently changed my Ode Gen 2 burr set from the stock gen 2 burrs with the Ssp Cast v1. Notice improvement in taste with clarity and more balance. Felt the Gen. 2 burrs did not bring out enough flavors.

The cast v1 has no “fixed” or “rotary” marking on the back of each burr. The V2 has the back of each burr with one being “fixed” and the other “rotsry”.

Brian, I've got an MC4 and have been contemplating the Shurikones. Have also contemplated a Fellow Ode for drip/pour over. I mainly do espresso, but will likely over time move to a 70/30 espresso/pour over. Think I could get away with Shurikones to handle everything, or would I get a far better result (for drip/PO)with a Gen 2 Ode with stock burrs, and later on maybe a high clarity option?
I think Gen 2 Ode will be a much stronger option for filter than Shurikones!

7:11 I have a gen2 but mine didn't come with the feature where when you press the power button, the lid comes vanishes into the ether.
I don't use RDT. I was thinking the static wasn't too bad, I get some static or coffee sticking on the top of the burrs on the Weber Key as well (similar to the 1zPresso K Plus hand grinder). But maybe that's also due to the stickyness of the beans, seems to be more of a thing with darker roasts or decaf or robusta which seems more sticky or oily, but I'm usually doing light roasts.
Surprised how much retention fell out afterwards on the V1 ! Wouldn't the Knocker help remove that? The fact it shocks you is a bit shocking heh.
I think we're going to see more coffee grinders with those Ionizers if it deals with static so effectively, hopefully no negative side effects :O
Bro you have to RDT on the Key like mad or you’ll be losing tons of your dose 😂. 3 sprays minimum
@@zeropuckprep I never do RDT and didnt find it that much. Today I used a sticky decaf coffee and rubbed under the burrs to get off the clinging coffee and it was about 0.4g. Usually a lot less with a regular light roast. I also have the silly auto WDT tool removed since I kept hitting that and making a mess that way.
How we compare it to Comandante C40 ? I mean flavor
How would the gen 2 burrs compare to SSP HU ?
Will the gen 2 stall or does it stall as easy as the gen 1?
The Ode Gen 2 certainly does look like a very good grinder. I already have a DF64 with SSP MP and a K-Max. Does it make sense to add the Ode Gen 2? It would be interesting to know how it stacks up to the Timemore Sculptor 078.
If you want a more generalist flavor profile then Gen 2 will be great. The workflow is also top notch. The Sculptor is actually fantastic but it is a much more expensive grinder.
@@BrianQuan Thanks for the reply! I saw the short video you posted of the sculptor, Wonder if there will be a review on it. I can get the Sculptor for about RMB3200 on taobao, and shipping is very little because I live in Hong Kong. Not sure how much the Ode Gen 2 will cost here. Don't see them in stock yet. Gen 1 cost between RMB2000-2500, so I guess Gen 2 will cost a few hundred more bringing it very close to the Sculptor. If Sculptor is better than the Gen 2, I would definitely get it due to the variable RPM and the interesting blade design.

It's an ionizer, found in hair dryers, if you have electrical experience it may be possible, but not easy..
I have a Baratza Virtuoso that just went out on me. Had it for 10+ years. Before it did, I have been noticing coffee flavors were taking a nose dive. The sweetness of my African coffees was gone. I home roast with a Behmor and was thinking the quality of the beans were at fault or something with my roasts. Well i pulled out my old old Mr Coffee burr grinder (until i hear from Baratza to get this looked at) and what do you know? The sweetness and mouthfeel is back! It was my grinder the whole time being out of spec.
I had known the grinders are very important for flavor but didnt even consider it could be my grinder. I think i paid $30 for the mr coffee back in the day and it is in no way a great machine but Wow! What a wake up call. A grinder is very crucial!
I am seriously looking at this Ode machine. My wife and i drink a lot of filter drip coffee so don't need an expresso grinder.
My baratza plastic burr holder has broken for a second time! time to move on. The design is absolute crap that when that plastic ages it gets brittle and bam..there goes your grind.. and that damn parts hard to find in New Zealand. Looking hard at the ODE 2 and the VS3 for my filter pours

How does this compare to the Acaia Orbit for espresso? I was planning on getting the Orbit when they released it with the SSP burrs, but if Ode 2.0 works well with SSP and can go with the stepless mod, I might go with this instead
They are on different levels, I don't think you can replace the orbit with the ode, price difference is 10 times...
The Ode 2.0 doesn’t have a motor that’s robust enough for espresso grinding.
You might check out the DF64 for a 64mm espresso grinder.
As someone who just bought an Ode+SSP MP setup, while RDT is cool I do wonder if there's some kind of anti static mod out there that can simulate their fix. I don't really run into the issue of beans not going into the grinder so that's kinda my only problem left
I just bought the Gen 1 + SSP burs too about 6 weeks ago... Kind of bummed I didn't know a Gen 2 was coming out.
the ionizer component is out of a hair dryer. Those hair dryers aren't the cheapest but if you're really good at electronics, maybe?
I touch my beans with a drop of water and the static reduces.
Brian, I've had so much trouble with grinders clogging. Does this new grinder solve that problem?
If you're using extremely dark roasted coffee that is oily you can run into some stickage, but aside from those extremes I think you're good to go!
I literally cannot grind Liberica beans in my Ode 1.1 because they would just get stuck and then I would have to go through the whole process of trying to dismantle the grinder to poke some beans that just got stuck at the entrance lmao

Would you go from a DF64 (with SSP MP) to a Ode 2 and put the MP's in there? Im only drinking pour-over coffee and i've gotten pretty frustrated by the workflow with the DF64 for Filter atleast.
Is there any difference in taste between the two of them?

You probably wouldn't notice anything very different between the two aside from variances in RPM between the two grinders. For most folks that variance won't matter too much assuming both grinders are aligned!

Two questions please.
Soon, I am considering getting an Ode 2 with SSP for a different option in addition to my Ditting 804 Sweet for pour-over coffee.
Since you have used both grinders, will an Ode 2, with SSP, make noticeably different pour-over coffee from an 804 Sweet and will it have some taste/experience areas where it does better that the 804 Sweet - I assume clarity??, or would one likely prefer the 804 Sweet in all aspects (I would probably never find the Ode 2 SSP better)?
Something else please: Can the Ode 2 be running and then beans added or would it not work that way?
I am used to turning on my grinder and then putting the beans in it. Ditting recommends that as it is easier on the motor, so I would like to do it also with a grinder with a smaller motor.
Hey there,
Depending on which SSP burrs you stick in the Ode that'd influence the biggest taste difference. I'd suggest SSP MP.
Ode gen 2 has auto stop so depending on how fast you pour the beans in it may auto stop on you. But you really can't stall this grinder at pourover size anyway.

On shut off: In your video demonstration, you ran it without beans, how did the autostop not trigger - is there a work-around to keep it going or does it run for a few seconds and if no beans quits but if you pour beans into it before that time, it will keep running?
@@Crake71 They'll be MP but not aligned so you should align them! Autostop triggers when there isn't any more resistance in the motor
You mentioned alignment of the burrs, but do you align both burrs and if so which one first? I've never understood if I just align the rotary burr, stationary burr or both and if both, in which order?
I believe Lance Hedrick has a video on this - he even uses an Ode to demonstrate

@@tjt6966 you do align both burrs - you're aligning then with respect to the axis running through them, rather than to each other

I bought the gen 1, and even with SSP burrs, I had all the complaints that you mentioned at the start of the video and sold mine. It just felt like way too many problems for the price point. Glad they actually addressed these issues, although I still think it's a bit silly they say not to grind for espresso when they even sell it with the SSP burrs and it clearly can grind fine enough.
They might be afraid raising the price point at least 100-200 for stronger components might alienate all the filter drinkers who already struggle to justify the current price point

It CAN grind for espresso but the motor isn't specced for it, it might struggle more and die prematurely, but I did hear from one person who said he's been using his for 2 years for espresso.
@@BensCoffeeRants Maybe a 200+watt motor would be the upgrade for a Gen 3? A few other sub-$300 grinders have motors stronger than 200 watts, though.
@@LJ-wo1wf seems like it's more of a purpose built brew grinder so not sure if theyll do that or need to do that. What they should do is make a separate purpose built espresso grinder to accompany it!
I think the problems with the ode v1 are overblown. RDT isn't hard. I get out what I put in with a little bit of effort.
The gen 2 burrs aren't more flavor transparent than the gen 1 from what I've heard. I think a lot of people demanded burrs that went finer because they were unwilling to pulse pour
I don’t entirely disagree with your statement. RDT is easy and the gen 1 was definitely usable. That being said, if your grinder forces you to pulse pour that’s a problem.
@@postmalort9267 why is that a problem? Pretty much everyone agrees that you have to do two pours either way ... A bloom and a real pour. So, if you're already doing that, what difference does it make? Plus, we're only really talking about volumes under 450ml, so it's not even an issue for a lot of usage cases.
If you have the gen 1, changing your water and brewing approach are much more sensible changes to make than investing in a new grinder.
That being said, if people want to go finer, i respect that. I just think the narrative that the gen 1 was somehow unusable for smaller cups is overblown

My ode never really shuts off by itself even when it's done grinding coffee... wonder if I have to clean it thoroughly somehow.
Unplug the grinder for 2 minutes and re-plug. Probably just needs a PCBA reset.
I have a df64 and a niche, and I can say I absolutely love the gen 2. Df64 I will be getting rid of at some point and getting an orbit. I can't picture a better dedicated pour over grinder anywhere near this price range. Still using stock burrs but might swap out with MP or cast. I hope other vendors copy the anti static tech of the ode, it's fantastic. Also if you managed to get through that, yea it's a little excessive lol.
MP burrs are kind of bad for brewing in my opinion. Really hard to find the sweet spot between too weak/acidic and astringency. They’re good for high clarity espresso though! Haven’t tried the cast, but seems like they would be a better choice for brewing. This is with hyper alignment too
@@leckel1996 yeah, kind of where I am at with MP. Actually been using cast in the df64 for espresso and I've been enjoying it. I drink almost exclusively light roasts except medium Italian roast for milk drinks and use the niche for that.
I ordered the gen 2 burrs to replace the MP burrs. Seems like a better option for 64mm burrs. I’ve had great, high clarity brews before but it has always been from 98mm burrs. I think there’s just an inherent limitation with 64mm burrs and clarity.
@@leckel1996 I haven't been disappointed by gen 2 yet, but I also don't mind sacrificing a bit of clarity for sweetness
as someone who currently has no coffee gear, how would you rate the ode 2 value for like maximizing performance in the 400 range? don't care too much for espresso because i won't have a espresso setup for a good while so it would be for just filter, I'm mostly curious how a hand grinder like the z6p or k max would compare in terms of coffee quality alone but if you have any opinions on the comparison with the ode vs other electric like the df64, niche, lagoom mini, those kind of grinder, lmk if you could help!
Owning the gen 1 for about a year and just upgraded to gen 2. The lid that came with the grinder was heavenly warped and not functioning well and they are sending me a gen 1 replacement (really?). I am happy about the new burr, added more body and texture to my cup. The downside is that the new ionizer does not solve the problem completely. The static build inside the burr still exists and has a significant amount of retention. I still have to apply RDT, and excluding the RDT thing from my workflow is the only reason I chose to upgrade instead of buying the new burr only. Very disappointed.
Hey Xinyao, can you do me a favor and make sure that the 2 anti-static pins are clean? We couldn't completely eliminate static, but we did find that the new upgrade was a significant improvement. Also, Gen 2 replacement parts will not be available until early next year, so that's why we are sending an original. It's the same part just with a different grind guide on the underside. I'm happy to send you a Gen 2 replacement when we get them in stock.
@@nickterzulli771 Hi Nick, thanks for the reply. Really appreciated that you guys take customer feedback here! The anti-static pins are working great. I tested it without RDT and the result is very clean on the grinds exit port. I include RDT in my routine so there is a subtle difference between having these pins or not. The real issue is there are quite a bit grinds stuck inside the machine due to static built-up, or maybe its a new machine and I need to let it eat some more beans to fill the gaps. I will monitor how this goes for my future brew.
The Fellow Ode Gen 2 blew away, and this is coming from a person who uses higher-end hand grinders. I would recommend it to anyone.

This review makes the Ode 2 sound good. And the gen 2 is good. On paper. It has everything I want in a grinder. But no other grinder has reliability issues as bad as this. With all the jamming and stalling I have decided to not buy this grinder and looking at all the other options even at $1000 have convinced me that I will be buying into a cascade of problems. So, I will continue to use my $99 grinder until someone makes a good reliable grinder that only requires routine cleaning and alignment. Timemore maybe??
