  • @rogerjones2275
    @rogerjones2275 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    At the age of seven, my first trainset, for Christmas 1962 (in Australia) was a Tri-ang Lord of the Isles set but a more elabourate and apparently rare one. It had the loco with three cars, an oval of #2 Radius Super 4 track with two points and extra track to make a loop, and a tiny bottle of Shell lubricating oil. I think it also had a signal box. The transformer was separate and made in a box made in Australia by Moldex, as were a whole range of common Tri-ang models during the 1960's,. These models were made using duplicate tools that were shared around between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
    The loco ran like a startled rabbit and was as bad as a slot car on curves, repeaatedly derailing and eventually writing off the front end of the body. It did however start a life long hobby that incuded starting a model railway manufacturing company, Powerline, and my ongoing minitaure railway company, Mini Train Systems, so I have a huge affection for these models and Tri-ang in general. For all their simplicity/crudeness they were cheap and reliable and were the beginnings of affordable model railways for everyone.

    I'm an American who was bullied by my peers for being into model trains as a kid, so I never fulfilled my dreams of my own layout. And I've been into Hornby due to one of my favorite Brits, James May lol. I was legitimately looking at this to be my starter set so I am so thankful I found your vid! I'll be looking into other starter sets to finally build a layout, even though this one is absolutely stunning 😫

    I have both the Hornby and Bachmann versions of these locos, and what really spoils both versions is that vast gap over the front bogie. They struggle on any grade, which leads me to think that tender drive would be a really good option!

  • @leokimvideo

    I'm not exactly sure where Hornby is headed, who are they trying to impress here. All I know is their share price is getting into very dangerous territory. Trying to get Hornby stock of any sort where I live is stupidly difficult. And i'm also familiar with the classic English made Tri-ang stuff that had really impressive performance. It seems the made in China stuff just doesn't have the zing

      Do you mean the frame? The GWR at the time used outside frames with the wheels inside, the city of Truro is like this too. It in theory it gave more space for the boiler. As Sam said these were built as Swindon switched from Broad to standard gauge and its feasible to assume they were trying to keep the larger boilers

    Evening Sam. I am so tempted. Originally this came out in the year I was born so very attractive. Given Hornby's track record over the last few years I am given to cut some slack. It seems like a good compromise and definitely a nostalgic keepsake to older modellers like me. i still hate that floating bogie and would love to see a manufacturer produce a modern model of this old timer - just imagine one pulling a rake of Genesis coaches - I'm getting misty eyed at the thought. Yours has a great crawl and the livery application looks fine. I don't mind the wonky old coaches as a nod to the originals. If I have a relative watching who wants to treat me, but probably not going to spend the same money as a Dapol Manor or Prairie. Cheers buddy.

    Modern finish looks fantastic but my original Triang Lord of the Isles from the 1960’s will keep running - for no better reason than she is nearly 60 years old, still running and holds a lot of memories. This re-issue could be good news. If the front bogie with pickups may now be available as a spare, if it fits my original, it would be a useful upgrade!

    • @SamsTrains

      @@SamsTrains it is certainly very curious as TMC have no reason to put up wrong information. Perhaps it came from earlier Hornby materials and the change of motor was a later production decision. Might be part of that “recreate the old v up to modern standards” conflict you highlighted in the video.

    For such an old model the proportions look absolutely excellent, and the only things that jump out for me is the 'skirt' on the bottom of the boiler, which is typical of sixties Hornby locos, and the coaches have what looks like British Railways Mk1 bogies, and I am sure the tender should have brakes. The wheels look a bit finer scale than I remember for sixties era Hornby locos.

    My partner has the original Triang set, I think her dad wanted a son really. Still a fast runner, I let it have a charge around my layout occasionally. The old set had "system 3" track, including uncoupling ramp, and a level crossing, and a signal box. I'm suprised the upgraded decoration does not include the clack valves and pipes on the 1st ring of the boiler. Old photos of the real engines show these were usually highly polished, could have done with the same treatment as the dome. The loco we have doesn't have traction tyres, I don't think any did then. If Hornby are going to do more of this sort of thing then can I make a plee for the Transcontinental range? Cheers Sam, great video, really enjoyed seeing all 3 versions on the move!

    A bit of a classic model there Sam.
    The original Triang set would have had the old Series 4 track which was a bit different in geometry to the modern Hornby track. Also the Great Western Society has suggested a new build Dean single as part of their long term plans to resurrect some of the extinct GWR classes, but at the moment its still in the planning stage and wont start until the 4-4-0 Country and 4-4-2 County Tank projects are more advanced.

    With Mad Vlad on the rampage, it is always a pleasure to click on the thumbnail and enter the simple world of Sam's Trains! The coaches in this set seem very similar to those supplied with the Anglian Train Set, originally an Argos item. The type of connection to the tender is similar too. Quite a nicely presented set taking you back to the days of Tri-ang, but you get the feeling that this offering is deliberately calculating and manipulative, and aimed at Hornby's mental picture of the old boy who had such a set as a lad! Thanks for uploading.

    I found my copy to be slightly nose heavy, this led to it running better backwards but jerky forwards due to the rear pickup wheels not making firm contact. Some wheel weights in the cab & Tender help with this. A collar is also needed on the Tender connecting pin to hold the rear of the Loco down. Pleased with the set otherwise, though I may add an interior to the coaches when I find out what they look like.

    • @mikebrown3772
      @mikebrown3772 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember the original really needed to run on steel track so the Magnadhesion would hold the trailing wheels down on the track as it ran rather jerkily.

  • @OlivierGabin
    @OlivierGabin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not bad overall. The price is decent (even if a RRP of for GBP 100-120 would have been better), the locomotive superb, the coaches nice, the idea of a redux of a legacy model is something interesting.
    Two points that are questionable : use of R1 curves, R2, the standard for OO, would have been better in my opinion, and the plastic wheels of the tender. Check them with a calipher but I think they are the same diameter as the trailing wheels of the engine. So, those might have been used instead of those horrible plastic wheels, but I may be wrong. Add the traction tyres to the mix, not something good, especially because the original did not have some.
    A good point is the absence of a regulator. Due to the crappy models Hornby use to sell, it's a plus. Overall, not a bad set.

  • @notmuch_23
    @notmuch_23 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think if Sam hasn't done so already, a series based around improving models' shortcomings would be worthwhile. In this case, do something with the "floating" front wheelset, replace the plastic tender wheels with metal ones, add badly-needed electric pickups, maybe replace the motor magnet(s) with neodymium, print and paint passenger car/coach interiors.

  • @dekhrahahoon
    @dekhrahahoon ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Sam, I have this 'remembered' set, and I also had the original in the 1960s. That one ran FAR too fast, and flew off my track without the greatest care on the accelerator. It also pulled very few coaches, I think three only. I decided to fix proper springing and centering on the bogey. I was willing to lose pulling power. Afterwards, it stayed on the track due to its increased stability and, to my surprise, it pulled one extra coach! Stability matters.
    I was delighted to see the new set at a hobby store in Brisbane Australia, so I snapped it up. I was all ready to do my fixes again on the front bogey, but to my surprise Hornby had already fitted springing, but alas, no centering. And I was delighted with the new slower speed settings. I really love the entire set, and I think it is the perfect balance between authenticity and modernisation.
    The one big failure, which you spotted, are the tender wheels. They are to the old rough standards and they WILL derail if they encounter modern Peco track at an unfortunate angle or speed. Luckily, this is easily fixed. The wheels are of the split plastic Triang type. They will move apart if needed on finer track. All you have to do is make sure they move apart. I bent a small piece of 0.5mm brass rod into a little clip and inserted it in between the two halves of the plastic wheelset. Bingo! It travels flawlessly on modern streamline track.

    Thanks Sam. Nostalgia indeed! Quite charming. My father bought me a model of Lord of the Isles in 1961. Amazingly the engine and tender were sold separately! It was a star in their range at the time. I remember a book produced by Triang claiming that you could read the text on the builders plate. Like you I have mixed feelings. If Hornby were going to upgrade then I think that they could have done a few more improvements - they should have improved the coupling between the engine and tender, replaced the plastic tender wheels with metal ones, added tender pick ups and ditched the traction tyres. The coaches would look much better with a simple interior. A new tooling would be superb.

    When coupling the engine to the coaches, I noticed that the engine coupling was slightly lower than the coach coupling. The pointed part of the engine coupling needs to be filed a bit flatter so that it contacts the coach coupling a little bit higher so that it rides up the coach coupling a little easier facilitating an easier coupling or should I say any sort of coupling. Try that. As an alternative, you could try bending the coach coupling downwards a little as it seems to be bent upwards slightly compared to the engine coupling albeit at the risk of possibly breaking the coach coupling. Just be careful, as I know you probably are. Just a suggestion Sam as I could see the coupling action from a better perspective than you you as you were positioned higher up than your viewers are. Still a great vid and I agree that the livery is a vast improvement over the original, of which I have an example. I also have another example. I think it is the Duke of Edinburgh. My original runs noisily but at least it does run. Keep the vids coming my friend and stay safe and well.

    There is a solution to the gap between the front bogie and the foot plate. Fitting larger diameter wheels to the front bogie. The wheels should be about the same diameter as the rear wheel. This will lift the bogie up however Clarence's will be reduced so how that will effect the performance I don't know. Ideally the pivot bar should also be shortened. If I get an old cheep original triang Lord I'll try it out and super detail it with seperate hand rails etc.

    I really like these remembered train sets. I think for the money they are very cool and while I won't be getting any of them soon as I have all the original ones from the 60s they are lovely. I really like the Caledonian Single as that one wasn't available in a long time. Didn^t think you would review one of them. The first radius curves is a shame though, as its pretty much unusable for anything bigger than a 0-6-0 tender engine. If it would be at least second radius it would have made a nice edition. I understand why Hornby did it, but I feel like it wasn't necessary. I think it would have been a lot better to include second radius curves as then it can be used as a starter set eventhough its missing a controller (I mean, you can get a Gaugemaster or something better luckily not one of the terrible Hornby ones). Great review, Sam. My old Lord of the Isles is still sitting in my display case, but is still a superb runner to this day.

    These Tri-ang Remembered train sets from Hornby are nice. Particularly, the Dean Single set and I do like the set. Of course, I would like to see a modern looking Dean Single locomotive with extra details and a modern mechanism with tender pick-ups Sam.

    Well I bought this on Ebay because I have the original version and had hopes this would run better and maybe on DCC. Not ideal for me as I would have preferred a really up to date version and not a homage to the 1960's. Still, I like 'Lord of the Isles' and sometimes you have to cut cards with the devil. I was not disappointed, true the coaches are a bit basic and the tender has plastic wheels, but it is a good looker. I fitted a DCC chip (smallest I could find) and it only just fits, the wire was just long enough to get the chip just over the front of the chassis block. I was very surprised with how well it runs, still nice and smooth on DCC and I did not have any issues with it cutting out. One thing I really do not like are the plastic tender wheels and I will see if I can get some metal wheels on there. I have no use for the track.

Also got those dreaded traction tires but is DCC ready. The livery is pretty nice. I enjoy it although it’s not the most reliable runner just like yours!

    My take on this is the "retro" products expand Hornby's market span. Triang sitting below Railroad to extend the service life of moulds no longer good enough for Railroad (with price reflecting the quality), and Dublo for the premium diecast models that sit above the main range in both quality and price.

    It’s a bit supremacist saying people shouldn’t use 2nd radius curves, but should use 3rd radius. Not everyone has the luxury of a football field sized loft to set up in - I’d be lucky to have space for a 1st radius oval, and have to make do with a short too-and-fro track. 1st radius should be perfectly adequate for a starter set with a small loco: you never know if the recipient is going to take up the hobby, and play value can be everything, although this seems to be aimed at collectors and nostalgia

    I would really love for them to re-tool this and the Cale Single, I think we are long overdue that. both those loco's use the same chassis and I've never had any luck with them in the Cale single just a unreliable mess, the Dean's haven't been as bad but they aren't good either at least provide a non traction tyred axle for us to fit if we want to you know. I've got the Triang remembered Cale Single Set on order but I'm mainly after the coaches as Hornby don't provide them separately at all unlike the GWR ones, I don't have high hopes for the loco.
    Thanks for the review Sam as always :)

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too - they'd go down amazingly, fingers crossed they retool both! Yes reliability has always been an issue... much of that could be fixed with tender pickups and a better balanced chassis... though that's hard to do. Maybe a driven rear axle would be good in addition to the main driver, then no balance issues!
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

      @@SamsTrains Yeah actually Rapido did that with their Stirling Single model and from what I can see it doesn't do any harm, I think Bachmann did a similar thing with their Emily model as well. It would have been nice to see the authentic series 4 track or similar made from steel like it would have been, and even add the "Magnahesion" magnet to it. Whichever way you spin it, Hornby are making a considerable profit on this set. Given the price of models, they may make it not look like a cash grab, but ultimately it is a cash grab as if they truly wanted to aim at collectors, they would have recreated authentic track and you have to also take into account, they did not have to create tooling. They've had it for decades.
    Overall, a good try though. A couple of let downs, but also a few good points too, like the upgraded chasis, though the old motors Triang use to have were really not too bad :). I think it is great to see these back in the range, for nostalgia and also to aim at kids again as a lot of modern models really are not so suitable for young kids with fine detail and small pieces.

  • @williamsquires3070
    @williamsquires3070 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if they didn’t put lamp brackets on the tender because the prototype didn’t have any, or because the original Tri-ang model didn’t? And why didn’t they put metal wheels on the tender, yet they fitted the coaches with metal wheels?

    • @rwjenkins
      @rwjenkins ปีที่แล้ว

      It would have been pretty simple to put metal wheels and pickups on the tender, but then they would also have to re-engineer the engine-to-tender connection with a proper drawbar, which would have involved updated tooling.

    In the 1960's I was given this loco as a birthday present. I then saved up for the coaches separately. My 'Lord of the Isles' had a smoke generator fitted, which actually worked rather well and looked realistic. Sadly one day the wires to it overheated, and melted through the smokebox. Pity, as it was a most cherished train.
