If there's such a thing as a Jazz musician that plays their instrument with a "Sense of Humor" it's Monk. (Legend/Genius)
I can't imagine any situation where I wish to be considered 'crazy' no matter how brilliant I may be...which is exactly the problem. when one is at one's most brilliant...they think you're crazy. at least that was my and continues to be my experience, meh
You know, the more I listen to many of Monk's recordings, the more I appreciate the symbiosis between Monk and tenor sax Charlie Rouse, who to me is one of the most underrated musicians of the bebop era and beyond. And Butch Warren on bass with Ben Riley here, they too deserve great credit. You don't get people to play with Monk who don't have their stuff together. I realize that here, they're in Paris doing a festival, and a lot of old favorites, but that soul connection between Monk & Rouse still stands out to me. They go back, brothers & sisters! And bless them and their enormous talents-- They bring us forward!
One night at the Five Spot, Thelonious seemed to be in one of his moods, would play a few bars, walk off the stage, let the others carry the rest of the song; come back for next piece, same thing - right through each set. And, do not think any of us were disappointed - because his guys handled everything so well, right up to standard. We all loved Monk not just for the notes he played, but for himself, something about his stance in life; & his players likewise. All good, original & unified.

It's so AMAZING. And to think that Thelonius Monk almost lost his cock while practicing for this concert makes one appreciate the beauty of it all the more dearly.
I was blessed to have been born in the 60'2 to a family of of creative people. As a Black American, my history in America far exceeds the middle passage across the Atlantic. It is rare today to get truth in fact about the Blacks in America and their inhabitation in America, predating the slave trades from Africa. Seems as though a whole lot of information has been omitted. The indigenous people as they are called excluded the Blacks in early America who were omitted in that definition. (that was a tiny side bar that my spirit had me mention)... to be continued for another time as the dots are connected and the blanks are filled in. This music is priceless and as a little girl, I loved to hear my dad playing his saxophone in in the house in Queens, NY. It was a backdrop so to speak of my life. Music , science, and more. You could say that I was fortunate to have witnessed self determination and excellence on a variety of levels during the era where Black America was not blatantly disregarded. There was room to excel and expect fruitful outcomes from Black people in America. Unlike today where we are seeing the results of ill meaning strategies of social and political planning that has taken many decades to rear its ugly and gradual narrative.
Listening to this in Kingsville, Texas on November 29th, 2020, one of the first cold days of the winter, and it feels like I'm there with Monk, or he's here with me. Absolutely based.
Hey Joseph, I'm listening to Monk just outside of Kingsville, Ontario, Canada, and we are also experiencing cold conditions, and about an inch of snow. Not bad for December. Nothing like Monk to warm up a cold late fall night. Take care down in Texas!!
A fella on here commented on how Monk can make you dance. All that talk about technique and how he had bad technique, etc. This is a choice live recording of his best band. His Columbia recordings, except for Monk (8 or so in all) are all complete masterpieces. Monk is worth owning, but don't start on that one. They don't get the credit they deserve. Monk took time to seep into my bones. His music first struck me as simple, then a tune here and there on the album I first bought, CrissCross, started registering to me. Got catchy. Then over several listens, the whole album lit me up. Every moment of the album became a whole deep enjoyment. Each album did the same thing the same way. Mingus said he had the best meter of anyone. What he is doing then, is swinging. He swings using timing, and he swings by adding the perfect tonal touches at the right time. He also brought a childlike enthusiasm into his music that was and still is not matched by anyone else; the joy is inescapable. Third, he often began his studio tunes with these beautiful stride pieces that brought the band in at a time that couldn't happen more appropriately. He built tension on the intro that was so tight, and then the band would come in and the tune is elevated at that moment to a chemical reaction. He had his perfect band during those years, and he had worked out every detail of his songs, many of which were already in is repertoire for many years. Lastly, he brought you to city as he knew it. You can hear the city, streetcars, on several great tunes. That also is some of the enthusiasm I'm talking about. Altogether, nobody swung as hard as Monk. He will always be the top. Nobody can make me dance like Monk. Check out those Columbia recordings.
LOL. *Monk* was the first Monk album I owned, and it worked fine for me. Nostalgia, maybe, "the first one"? Umpteen recordings later, still one of my favorites, especially with "Liza."

I think it was Coltrane who said that if you ever lost your place in one of Monk's complex structures, it was like falling down an elevator shaft. You had a hell of a time getting back in.
This is truly a gem. One of the best recordings of Monk's classic quartet I've heard. I'm very grateful to have heard Monk and this quartet live in 1967. Got his autograph! And even that was unique.
I'm struck by how the other players meld so seamlessly into Monk's style, temperament and energy. It's amazing that even though every bit of his genius is evident in his solo piano work, the musical impact can be enhanced so well by the ensemble. What's been documented here is a treasure to marvel over for ages to come!
They were already in the process of recording "It's Monk's Time" when they did this concert, you can hear the "Lulu's back in town" melody with Charlie Rouse in the first song.
i laugh when i hear people say Monk lacked technique. Not even Tatum, Peterson, Bud, Jarrett, Corea had better technique when it came to rhythmic effectiveness, within the scope of their own musical vocabulary. Monk invented his own lines, completely changed the jazz piano approach to comping, had his own technique and he executed flawlessly, live, made us DANCE. Play me even once, the descending whole tone lines as crystal clear/in the pocket, go ahead homie. make me dance.
