Ghost: * Swings chain to attract Frank deeper into the mine * Frank: * Leaves * Ghost: Wait, that's illegal! AND ALSO I GO TO ANOTHER TAB WHILE HEARING SO I NEVER GET THE SECRET:)+:( Now sub mmee 😶😶
I didn't even leap to "GHOST!" when I watched the video. He saw footprints at the entrance. For me, my first thought on seeing that chain swinging was "There's someone else in the mine." A person is way more threatening than a ghost and even more concerning when said person is apparently living in an old abandoned mine.
Ghosts are people though??? "A person is way more threatening than a ghost" doesn't make much sense. Considering that a ghost is just a person. Little different from you or me.
I don't think he's lying. I think he was genuinely shocked and spooked by that chain swinging. The big teller for me is, he went quiet. Completely quiet. Throughout the video he says nothing about ghosts or haunting or anything. He's not even creeped out by the weird entrance. And then even when he does get spooked, he doesn't make a sound. Just makes the statement "I don't know why that chain is swinging" and then turns the camera off and books it. No other comment, nothing. I honestly think that kind of thing is pretty geniune.
@@garybuttherissilent5896 ahahah ur comment. So simple yet genuinely and unnecessarily mean. The lady explicitly wrote that her comment represents what she THINKS. In 2021. Year in which every tard like you wants to impose his opinion on the rest of the world. Just try to calm down and start coping with your frustration. Edit: She proposed a technical analysis I found relevant and interesting.
I agree. I think he was honestly trying to figure out what was causing it to swing and when he couldn't come up with a logical answer, he Scooby-Doo'd it out of there.
Frank has a passion for exploring abandoned mines Despite this, he knows his limits and is always cautious enough to leave when something is amiss Frank is smart. Be like Frank.
I just appreciate that Frank saw something out of place in this strange, dark, isolated location and immediately decided he wanted none of it. This was the safest way he could have wound up in a Mr. Ballen video 😂
I was thinking the same thing 🤣 especially all those super sketchy cave diving gone wrong videos that seem to start the same way “i know i should turn back now… but…”
he was right to follow his instincts and get out! i’ve been wondering if the swinging chain may have been caused by a magnetic force or, like a pendulum, it could have been under the force of gravity. it’d be interesting to go back to that mine and see if the chain is still swinging back and forth.
Why? I would not even consider being like Frank. Running away from something that can't hurt you is a weak way to go thru life. Confront the unknown and make it known. Knowledge is power...running away from a non life threatening situation is not. Don't be a pussy, don't be a Frank. Tons of rock could collapse on him while in a cave and yet he is afraid of a moving chain🤔🤔 VERY SUSPICIOUS.
He moved the chain himself. Mr. Ballen conveniently left out the "creepy" noises that frank put in the video later on. Frank does stay and explores more. At one point he "hears" creepy noises, but those noises are from a stock library. The video is entirely fake. As for the reason he did it. It could be for fun, it could be an attempt ay going viral. Who knows? Mr Ballen's evidence is flimsy.
The good news for Frank was that he was really close to the entrance when he saw the swinging chain(s). Imagine being a mile in and 500 feet down, alone in the dark and seeing that!
His reaction was very genuine. He didn't hype anything up prior, and aside from a matter-of-fact statement and a quick exit, he barely reacted to the incident itself
“I don’t like how that chain is swinging” *turns around and leaves* this dude is a genius Edit: I feel that it’s necessary to point out that it might not be anything paranormal. It could be something as simple as a small animal or even someone who was with frank. The point of the matter is that this guy would survive in the plot of a horror movie.
this was supposed to be a horror movie in an alternate universe , but Frank ended it in the opening scene before the ghost got him and the title sprang up across the screen in oozing red letters
If he saw footprints, there very well could have been someone living or, at least, hiding in the mine. The swinging chain may not have started swinging right when the light shined on it, the person having moved away before Frank looked that way, but the inertia of the chain persisted. It's not the only chain swinging, either; there is one even closer to Frank. I genuinely think there was someone else in that cave and they did not want Frank to stumble upon them. It's honestly scarier than any "ghost" in my mind. I don't particularly want to meet the kind of person who skulks in an abandoned mine.
Or if you’re a pessimist, the footsteps were his, he moved the chain before filming, which would also explain why we never heard the chains clink if this was someone bumping them in reaction to his presence
It is too stranded for homeless. If there is a person he would hear him. Since he is alive something probably just wanted to scare him off from what lied ahead...
Came here to say this. Similar thing happened to me in a large public park. There was a kind of remote area I liked to go near the water, but being remote it was hard to get to. So I was disappointed when I got there only to see someone else already there, except instead of hanging out looking at the water normally, when I arrived they immediately slipped into the reeds and went completely quiet. I could now only see their shoes. I think they thought I hadn't and couldn't see them. Those shoes didn't move. Now I can understand putting some vegetation between you and others when you're enjoying nature. But then the shoes would be moving. Walking, or twitching or tapping or adjusting themselves slightly on the ground - not staying rigidly still while the person they are attached to makes no sound. But like i said, I really wanted to have the spot, so at first my brain was slow to adjust and I thought I'd hang out and see if I could make them choose to leave first. But the shoes stayed totally still. The person stayed totally quiet. And as a few minutes passed like this, I realized that if it was that important to them not to be seen, maybe i didn't want to see them either, and it was time to go.
And of course, someone walking on the muddy ground, and moving around doing all this stuff was able to do so without making any sounds whatsoever? And you would know for a fact the footprints were made that very day instead of a week or two ago or longer Sherlock? As I posted earlier, if someone goes into the mine a month after Frank, and sees Frank's footprints, then that means Frank is still in the mine a month later? You come to all of your conclusions based upon the fact that Frank simply said he saw footprints? Also, a mine and a cave are not the same thing.
I came to the comments hoping to see fellow Frank appreciators and I'm happy to have looked lol Frank will never get the respect/glory he should receive for his dedication to his documentation in all the wild places he's been. Does my heart good to see im not the only one here who lit up a little when we seen the screenshot lol All Y'all know you did, too! 🤣
His reaction seems extremely realistic to me. I’ve had some weird experiences in my life and I’ve reacted like that too. You just stop, look at the thing, trying to figure it out, considering if it’s dangerous, and then you either leave or move on with a pounding heart and lingering anxiety. No wonder he went looking for it afterwards. You get curious after an experience like that. It’s a mix of being scared but also wanting to see more because it would validate your previous experience. That and of course hoping to catch it on tape for views.
There's another video of his that was proven to be a hoax (he added whispering and spooky sounds from a sound clip that can be found in TH-cam) and he was equally convincing in his reaction on that fake one, so I wouldn't believe him based on his reaction alone.
I agree, but look at the other chains on the left. They are barely swinging, so it makes me think he could have bumped them while going down there to swing that chain. I'm not saying it's a hoax, but it easily could be. It could also be compounded minute seismic activity, but my money is on hoax if I had to bet
Oh yeah. I remember hearing this really weird noise on the woods. Freaked me and my brother out but we followed it anyway. Turned out it was a bird called the ruffled grouse that was making that wierd noise. Another time I was hiking and I felt like I was being watched. Everything went silent and me and my dog just looked around figuring out what was wrong and that's when I saw this wierd looking deer so I emediatly left the area. It was probably just a sick deer and a couger or something was stalking it but that too would be terrifying to have a couger pounce on you.
That swinging chain would terrify me but not because of fear of the paranormal. Nevada is one of the most seismically active states. I feel certain movement of the earth caused the chain to move. One hundred feet into an abandoned mine during an earthquake?? Truly horrifying. I'm glad Frank experienced nothing worse than a chain moving.
I've done a couple ghost hunts now...but I don't know how I would react to turning and seeing a swinging chain in a place where I was by myself...that's terrifying
I wanna be in a old haunted building while ghost hunters and when there talking to the ghosts asking like are you still here or whatever I'ma be like yes and pop out unexpectedly and scare em all for a second
In anticipation of a few comments I expect to receive: 1. Yes, I did cover this story on TikTok in early 2020, and yes, that tiktok video is now on the @mrballenshorts TH-cam channel as well. 2. Yes, I’m aware of the numerous videos that debunk some of Frank’s content. If you watch this video to the end, I speak specifically about that.
I spent 15 years as a coal miner and I have a story that I think you'd really like. A miracle happened during a cave in where three of us were buried under tons of coal and rock. One single timber broke in half as the roof came in and fell against the machinery creating a pocket just big enough to allow us to survive. There's much more to the story but that's the basics.
You may have seen either Surviving Wilburg, a documentary on the mine fire disaster that happened there or maybe the Crandall canyon disaster footage. The incident with me took place across the valley and a year after Crandall Canyon. Same type of thing just not on as large a scale as Crandall. The bounces we experienced would register as high as 5.3 on Utah's seismic readings and we were at the epicenter.
I agree. I had a supernatural experience about 8 years ago that gave me almost like ptsd for a few years. It made me question reality. I still think about it often.
Absolutely! My stepson/best friend contacted me through my mom's cell phone. Blew my freaking mind. It changed my life. It gave me a completely different perspective on the after life.
I disagree. I don't understand why people immediately jump to the supernatural when they lack an actual explanation. First of all, appealing to the supernatural to fill in the blanks does not actually fill in any blanks, it raises many more questions and answers none. Secondly, it's incredibly lazy and prevents you from looking for an actual answer. "Must've been supernatural" is always a bullshit explanation.
@@huntclanhunt9697 They are claiming the chain never lost any momentum so when it was swinging it always swung the same distance instead of slowly losing part of it's distance as it goes back and forth until it stops.
I would be less afraid of a ghost swinging that chain and more afraid of a psychopath with a rusty knife getting THAT close to me without me knowing. Ghosts aren’t scary. Sociopaths who hang out in abandoned mines are terrifying. The knowledge that someone is in there with him and he doesn’t know who they are or why they’ve concealed themselves is brilliantly dreadful.

I love how you take the time to say that Frank has such an eloquent way of speaking about his craft, because that is exactly how I feel about you in your craft! Love how you deliver your stories and all the effort you put into your videos!
I love your storytelling. Taking a chance on letting everyone know how old I am, when I was a kid, the only entertainment we had was radio. There were several scary shows like Lights Out and The Shadow Knows that we would listen to. No video, no TV, no movies… Just storytelling. It was great and your stories take me back to those times. I don’t even need to watch your videos to enjoy the stories.
“start violently vacuuming,” Cracked me up big time!! You have no idea, when I was a kid my grandma was fanatical about vacuuming… I would’ve killed to be able to use that phrase on her!
I’ve been living in my car for about 3 weeks now and the only thing that’s getting me through this rough time is MrBallen. This dude is legendary, thank you for your videos.
Hang in there man. I was in that situation for far l long anger than I care to talk about. If I may give some advice? Make sure to keep a case of water somewhere in your vehicle, get ahold of a roll of reflective material like subflooring or even a few cheap windshield sunshades and cut them to fit over all of your windows. It will give you some privacy as well as insulation and help keep the inside of your car darker for a longer time so you can try to get the necessary sleep that is so very difficult to achieve without really being comfortable. Good luck out there and stay safe.

It's stupid too. Old mine shafts can easily collapse because the Timbers have rotted. There were many mine collapses even in the day when the wood wasn't rotten
I’ve been following frank well before the Horton mine spookiness. He’s a good man with great content, it’s good to see his work getting respect from other channels.
He still uses click bait with the vid I'm linking down below proving this which is older than the Horton mine vid, th-cam.com/video/poJYb2FPFX0/w-d-xo.html It's not uncommon for these mine exploration vids to use click bait to promote their vids because it seems to work, look at the viewer count on the vid I linked and compare it to the rest of his vids and so I believe this was a stunt of his and it worked but is still rubbish and this comes from some who likes to explore mines and watches mine exploration vids so I know to expect this kind of thing and also what you'd most likely find in an old mine and it aint ghosts lol
I remember when Frank posted this video. My dad would watch his videos pretty regularly because he too was interested in the abandoned mines and ghost towns sprinkled throughout Nevada. And my dad honestly thought nothing of it, because he said, "weird things happen in abandoned mines." I believe Frank posted without the intention to go viral because none of his previous videos point to that. He saw something weird, and he posted it.
Tell ur dad it was fake LMFAO th-cam.com/video/naIEpELSgAM/w-d-xo.html "i believe he poosted this without the intention of going viral" Whyd he fake it then? Weird.
Could something have made the chain start swinging from the very topmost part of the chain? Like perhaps the ceiling around it had eroded and created an unintentional air current system, much like in a valley or something?
I’m not surprised if weird things happen in mines lol, they are creepy and have a lot of history. I feel like this could be real because I have a lot of experience with paranormal activity and i would always get that bad feeling that something was weird or off and the fact that he mentioned that it felt creepy makes sense.
I hope it's something far out. But it looks like the other chains on the left are slightly swinging from someone that backed into them after putting the main chain into motion. Was it Frank?
His other two are about 1000% scarier than the swinging chain. The voices when he says I don’t know if those are birds or snakes? And then when he heard the mine come alive & multiple people speaking over loud speakers. Those two are leagues ahead of a swinging chain that surely didn’t make my skin crawl.

I can't tell if Frank would die immediately or a little later in a horror film. I mean, he's exploring these old, hazardous mines by himself. But he noped out as soon as the spooks started
He seems like the expected easy target for a stupid kill but just nope out of there the moment things feel off(and is the audience are yelling at the screen to get outta there), and that “nope I’m out” reaction is something the movie kind of plays off for a laugh before starting the crap outta us, whether it be him still ending up dead or it cuts the antagonist surprise killing someone else
Either he's the "mystery disappearance" or he's the expert in the group who dies from helping someone or getting stuck after everyone panics later in the movie
In all the years I've been watching TH-cam, thousands of videos and channels, I've never actually waited for anyone to upload like I do with this channel. It's almost like looking forward to seeing a friend, or someone you really enjoy spending time with each week. Even if it's just for a couple of 30 minute catch ups. Can't describe it really. There's a familiarity about you John. It's a very uncommon personality trait. Keep up the good work mate.
This is one of the extremely rare cases in which I was actually aware of the viral video waaay before it went viral. I think I first discovered the Exploring Abandoned Mines channel when he still had only 10k subscribers. Cool to see John making a video on it.
The most terrifying video this guy has in these random mines has to be the one where it starts with him walking through a rainstorm showing of a new flashlight and after a while in the cave the whole thing fills with loud/incomprehensible whispers
Same. I been watching his stuff for a while. Incidentally I don't remember this video striking me as memorable at the time - just kind of peculiar and off-putting that he'd just leave a cave that upbruptly. I agree with Ballen it's very out of character for him. I guess in that sense it does make it a little more creepy.
I was so glad to see that you didn't try to hype this up to be more than it is. Just straightforward story telling, and nothing more. As in all your videos, you put the story out there, and let the viewer reach their own conclusion. Well done again John.
Great episode! I love exploring old mines in Arizona and have never ran across anything paranormal. I did find a very ill-tempered badger in one once, but that was it. The swinging chain could have been caused by a minor earthquake. But, only another nearby chain was affected, so... Definitely creepy. Only discovered Mr. Ballen a couple of weeks ago, but as a former squid and lover of the paranormal, I am hooked!

I believe it's authentic because of his reaction. The silence for a while afterward. People who fake tends to exagerate their reaction, like "whoah" "oh sh*t". People who wants to fake being suprised/scared don't usually do it by freezing in shock.
*Yes, it’s authentic. I’ve been watching this dude’s channel for a while b/c my mom’s ancestors were Scottish miners out west in the early 1800’s (the “There Will Be Blood” vibe). I like seeing the conditions they worked in and the dangers they faced. Considering the number of men who died while mining if anyplace stands a chance at being haunted it’s those old, abandoned mines virtually nobody enters* 💯
Yes, indeed. I know that freezing shock very well it's like your brain tries to process "what is that" "how" question. But it can't do it fast so for 4-5 secs you are just frozen.
Most likely he just ran over there and swung the chain before starting to record again. It's an obvious cut to the scene with the chain swinging and it starts with him facing the opposite direction of the chain. Probably does these little hoaxes to get more viewers and make more money. Can't really blame him.
This is the first and only time I've heard this story that mentions the fact he seen footprints in the dirt and telling what the yellow tubing and chains were. Damn good effort.
I just recently discovered your channel and as an Aussie I have to thank you for giving conversions into Celsius and M/KM. I also appreciate that you realise non Americans won’t necessarily know things that are common knowledge to Americans. Not only are you a great storyteller but you’re also considerate of the fact that you have an international audience. I really appreciate it!
True to that. I dont see it often that US based You Tubers bother to give metrics as well. Most dont realise biggest part of the world uses metric system or dont care. But I appreciate it :)
Exactly! Many Americans are foreign born, and English is not our first language. So I really appreciate that MrBallen carefully explains specific things (chute -- definition.) At first I was hearing & thinking this phonetically, "Nevada! The West & Cowboys = Shoot" -- lol!) 🤠 🤠 🤠
As an American I usually think of distances in terms of yards (1 yard = 3 feet). A meter is just a little longer than a yard, so for the sake of rough estimates I treat them as the same. It's easier for me to visualize yards than feet probably because of American football, as the field is divided into "yard lines." I have no such quick shortcuts for converting temperature between C and F lol.
Oooph seeing that chain made my entire body go into goosebumps and tears came to my eyes, I've genuinely never felt so unsettled. Like my brain instinctively knew something bad was there and just full flight moded.
I've been watching Frank since he had almost no subscribers, and I can tell you he's authentic. He just genuinely enjoys exploring abandoned mines even if they don't get many views. Most of the time he's completely alone in the mines in the middle of no where, at night. Dudes got some balls
I agree he’s got balls but no I don’t think this video and a few others he’s made are authentic. Ultimately, he does care about the views unfortunately. Sad, but I don’t watch his videos anymore. Good luck to him tho
I’ve been watching Frank’s channel for a few years now. You’re right, he really knows his stuff. He even manages to make an empty mine exciting just because he knows so much history. His passion really comes through on his videos. I’m somewhat claustrophobic so I could never explore mines but I enjoy watching him do it!
I remembered years ago that this Horton Mine video came up as a suggested to watch and I think Frank made a followup video into the mine again. On the 2nd visit, the PA system went off and he was baffled because the mine has been abandoned for decades. I lived vicariously through Frank's videos.
Ive watched frank for awhile before he uploaded this video and ita even more unnerving to know out of the previous hundreds of videos theres never been "paranormal" stuff on any but a very small few. He's really a good dude, it shows whenever he tells a story about a missing person that died horribly, or especially anything to do with fallen soldiers. You can tell he really feels for the victims and their families.
I’ve seen this video so many times and what scares me isn’t a ghost, it’s the fact that there could be some person in there with him. A person who went way out of their way to be alone.

You are a great story teller.
I love exploring abandoned mines/caves. I once went into a lava tube in idaho with my girlfriend, and at the end of it, about a mile or two in, we were walking when we randomly saw a phone light go on then go off. I called out to whoever it was and got no response. This lava tube was off a remote highway and no other cars were parked anywhere around. Suffice to say we booked it the hell out of there and I kept my eyes glued to the back of my head. Anyone deep in a cave sitting in the dark that doesnt respond to callouts, I don’t wanna meet. lol
Right choice. Can’t catch em’ all… This is a joke just in case I actually spook you. I’m terrified of taking my phone anywhere outside of home and I rarely get out of the house in the first place.
There's always the chance that it was a person who heard random other people in a secluded lava tube they were exploring. They then got scared and turned their light on, realized, "oh crap, I just alerted to my position", and turned the light off. They didn't answer because they were scared of whoever it was calling to them might attack them. Just another way of looking at the encounter though xD.
I'm a third shift vending route driver who's just recently discovered the great MrBallen and I'm absolutely addicted. He's an awesome ridealong companion for those lonely nights on these dark creepy southern backroads
I must agree. I was expecting to see who shook the chain when he downloaded at home. He feels very uneasy, like he's being watched and there's strange sounds. There's a container near the base of the chain and I thought food or water maybe. It's scary for Frank but not followers of Mr Ballen.
i watch a lot of his exploration videos from time to time, there was one video he posted quite a while back that was just a regular run-of-the-mill mine video. it looked like someone else was in there with him ( not just his friend ), the best way I can describe it is, that he looks up into a winze and talks about the history and some of the terms used, and about halfway into it, I noticed something move around he and his friend couldn't go up to the level winze was connected to because it had been blocked off or the ladder was too "Sketchy" I had just chalked it up to it being an animal until it melted into the darkness. ( I wanna see if i can find that video again ) It was about a 20 or 30 minute video, but it happens near the start of it, and he doesn't notice it, the whole video is just him exploring the mine and its chambers
And once you get into Bells Canyon if you turn at false square rock you end up ultimately chased from Bells Canyon by a creepy weirdo into Bamboo valley.
There was a small animal, like a rat/mouse that was on the chain. When he turned back around, it startled the rodent, who jumped off the chain in the darkness. Pushing off the chain would've caused enough force to swing the chain.
I was way more freaked out by the thought that someone else was there, messing with him by swinging that chain, being in pitch dark if his torch was knocked out of his hand and the fact that he was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The fact that he saw footprints on his way into the mine, my mind went straight to a person being inside that mine. The unknown person in the mine, in the middle of nowhere, in the pitch dark, is way more scarier to me than a ghost swinging chains!
A serial killer and probably a cannibal in abandoned mine is a lot scarier. I can image someone tried to approach him when he turned around to film the opening and ran away in hurry when he pulled out a flash light
A ghost at 4:21

Now sub mmee 😶😶
I don't watch the video.
I listen to them.
Ok
I didn't even leap to "GHOST!" when I watched the video. He saw footprints at the entrance. For me, my first thought on seeing that chain swinging was "There's someone else in the mine." A person is way more threatening than a ghost and even more concerning when said person is apparently living in an old abandoned mine.
This was my thought as well.
Don't wanna mess with mine dwellers!
Yes that's what I think
Ghosts are people though??? "A person is way more threatening than a ghost" doesn't make much sense. Considering that a ghost is just a person. Little different from you or me.
@@callumkristofer7793 I've never seen a ghost try stabbing me in the face though.

Why cant we all be like that wise ol' Frank
The good news for Frank was that he was really close to the entrance when he saw the swinging chain(s). Imagine being a mile in and 500 feet down, alone in the dark and seeing that!
OR the swinging chain is between you and the exit!
Luckily it’s not a demon or something like that there only a chain luckily he left

@@glennpuckett9746 they thought that because the chain was moving, and the chain wouldn’t stay moving for a month

I can totally relate!
There's another video of his that was proven to be a hoax (he added whispering and spooky sounds from a sound clip that can be found in TH-cam) and he was equally convincing in his reaction on that fake one, so I wouldn't believe him based on his reaction alone.
That's a good point. A lot of people become interested in the paranormal after they have an experience for themselves.
This is a good comment. I was trying to think of a logical explanation other than a person moving it.
Why just one chain moving?
Exactly... But why just one chain
I feel it was just the wind or movement of earth. But it would definitely be scary to experience alone.
I wondered about that myself.
I've done a couple ghost hunts now...but I don't know how I would react to turning and seeing a swinging chain in a place where I was by myself...that's terrifying

Still pretty cool story though
I spent 15 years as a coal miner and I have a story that I think you'd really like. A miracle happened during a cave in where three of us were buried under tons of coal and rock. One single timber broke in half as the roof came in and fell against the machinery creating a pocket just big enough to allow us to survive. There's much more to the story but that's the basics.
Yikes! Glad you guys made it out alright!!
I think I saw a TH-cam video on this!!!!
Dang dude, glad you made it out!
Glad you made it out. I couldn’t imagine being in that situation. Have you ever told your story anywhere?
I think after you experience a paranormal event, it changes how you perceive things especially if you're out exploring mines.
I agree. I had a supernatural experience about 8 years ago that gave me almost like ptsd for a few years. It made me question reality. I still think about it often.
Yup, most definitely.

I can't tell if Frank would die immediately or a little later in a horror film. I mean, he's exploring these old, hazardous mines by himself. But he noped out as soon as the spooks started
Probably the bloke who died first in the prologue and trigger the very thing that start the horror.
Frank would live. It's always gradual in the movies. So frank would, in my mind, have a chance to nope tf out.
Either he's the "mystery disappearance" or he's the expert in the group who dies from helping someone or getting stuck after everyone panics later in the movie
Probably would die at the start like the first guy to reply said or the one that gets lucky.

As an American I usually think of distances in terms of yards (1 yard = 3 feet). A meter is just a little longer than a yard, so for the sake of rough estimates I treat them as the same.
