For people freaked out, murcury is what did it. The water was contaiminated and exposere to murcury quite literally drives people mad. Its the reason the town was abandoned and many small towns sufferd similar fates from various poisons like lead.
Then why did nothing happen to them all the time that they stayed there? And why did that only happen to his wife when he wasn't there? Why when that day when he walked through that forest, the hooting of the Owls was different? As if there had been some presence there. I don't know, the fact that they were fine for months or years without anything happening to them, and then all of a sudden when the doctor goes away, is when that happens to his wife. And from Mercury? Why would it not happen in all those other times they were there?
@@whatskrakin37 My guess would be how much exposure there was. Perhaps she ran out of any purified water or normal drinking water and exposed herself to higher concentrations while he was away. Lacking a proper filtration system and not seeing the harm in drinking tap water. Since clearly it is not in the air. The hooting could have been his own hightened senses from the worry and paranoia being driven to the max. Any form of innate alertness to what is obviously wrong distorting his perception as his fears run rampent. Since he was already unnerved, and potentially had a very minor exposure to mercury, his brain just overloaded the fight or flight response. Worrying about someone you love's safety is a whole other beast compared to worrying about your own afterall. Harder to tame that fear because you lack control over the situation. Imagine the thoughts he was racing through: did she get attacked by an animal? Is she hurt somewhere and bleeding out? Did someone find their house and come to attack her while she was alone? The fear of the unknown and love and devotion to his wife would spike his chemical production of adrenaline to get to her side faster and put his fears at ease. Considering we also do not know how long they were there, it is possible she was having higher doses of Mercury through other beverage options [like water] more often than the Doctor was, and the amount of time they actually spent in the area creating inconsostant exposure; it taking months to even years of developing signs is not unnusual in this circumstance.
@@whatskrakin37 The Mercury's affect would be cumulative , so getting poisoned a little at a time , all along , until a critical amount is reached . She may have drank more water than her husband and was most likely smaller than him....either would explain why she got sick first . IF mercury was the culprit , or another toxin , it WOULD explain the history of weird stuff in the area . They were probably just drinking stream or spring water...while possible , it seems very unlikely that "city water" was run out to their house...just for them , so this contamination was localised.
@@whatskrakin37 Because it effects folks differently and at different speeds Mercury is nasty stuff. There's a few generations of folks in Wallace Idaho that were left intellectually impaired enough that it was noticeable - entire generations of crayon eating types. Wallace was a mining town and the EPA had to come in and clean. Kids were finding mercury in the dirt while playing. Nasty stuff.
A lot of guys built their own houses in those days. They weren’t a bunch of whimpy city guys who cried and needed soy lattes while driving their Teslas like nowadays.
Living in Litchfield Co, CT, USA, I can say there are many many ghost stories and folklore in this area. The woods here are exactly as described by Mr. Ballen. I’d love to hear a story on the Leatherman in this area, and why the Leatherman Caves in Watertown CT are haunted. Thanks for what you do!! Love this channel.
I am an absolute chicken and easily startled but I just have this fascination with scary stories. I love that you don't include jumpscares and your voice is just so calming. I also have photosensitive epilepsy and really appreciate that you don't use many flashing lights like a lot of horror channels do. Thank you so much.
I’ve been to Dudley town. Before it was illegal…I can tell you a story. We parked loaded new batteries into the flashlights and just started hiking. The owls are a real thing you can hear them even during the day. The cold spots did happen, the strangest thing was when the wind just stopped so nothing was blowing but this one branch sticking up from the ground was violently shaking every one there pointed there flashlights at it and just watched it happen… then we started heading out and on our way back to where we parked. All the flashlights decided to go out and this is before cell phones were a thing.. we literally bought the batteries and flashlights that day. We had to use our lighters like crazy people flicking away back to the cars.
Those bard owls every where in new England. That's not weird at all. When you buy dollar tree batteries they don't last. Stick.sticking. out the ground? You mean. Trees lol. Wtf. No one.died? That's not. Really a.story. literally. Nothing happened.
Mr Ballin, you just keep getting better. I’m an older lady, living alone, and this story had me on the edge of my seat. I proceeded to check the locks and draw the drapes. You are a great story teller. You’re at the top of your game when it’s a really scary story! Keep it up. I absolutely love your videos!
This is the episode I've been looking for. When he talks about Harriet and her mouth is open and maniacal laughter is coming out that definitely freaked me out!!
My uncle and I went to Dudleytown back in 1995. We didn’t see anything, but we noticed there were no animals or animal noises in the woods as we walked around. It was eerily quiet and that creeped us out. We left after about 30 minutes.
Those creatures were Sasquatch (human hybrids). Sasquatch can imitate all kinds of sounds. They probably wanted to shoo people out. It is also a reason for authorities to make certain areas off limits and have tough enforcement There is no curse. Nor evil forest..
Jon, here's a thought: You mentioned early on that the land had to be cleared of hemlock in order for the Clarkes to build their holiday home. Is it possible that hemlock grows throughout the forest at Dark Entry? If so then the whole environment would be toxic. The roots of poison hemlock can easily be mistaken for wild parsnips, and its leaves can be mistaken for parsley which is why it can lead to fatalities through accidental poisoning. Even touching the leaves, which can intermingle with the leaves of other plants, The known symptoms include trembling, burning in the digestive tract, increased salivation, dilated pupils, muscle pain, muscle weakness or muscle paralysis, rapid heart rate followed by a decreased heart rate, loss of speech, convulsions, unconsciousness or coma. Complications can lead to central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, acute rhabdomyolysis, or breakdown of damaged skeletal muscle, acute renal failure and death. Those are the known symptoms. There may be other undocumented side effects, such as delirium and pyschosis. And there is no cure. Could this kind of environmental toxicity be the cause of the "plagues" and insanity of people who lived in that forest?
Even mold in the air can make you hallucinate. Honestly it just needs extensive scientific study to know for sure, but that wont happen since that costs money and its not really worth paying for, unless someone wants to study it as a hobby, which they cant since its private property. But it's just easier for people to blame it on the "supernatural" since it's an easier explanation.
Roses and lilacs growing wild together is a pretty good indicator of an 18th-19th century settlement having been there. They're usually the remnants of someone's flower garden and they last far, far longer than even the rings of old houses.
I Love Roses, lilacs, and lavender, actually I could keep going ( I am talking about other plant's that I adore) as they really do last and the forest around them would have given fertilizer, moisture and just enough sunlight for optimum growing condition. Gosh I would love to sneak in there to get cuttings lol .
@@Jaidritz9285 found some in a nature park next to the ruins of an old house. Only the chimney and the front doorstep were still there, but the roses, lilacs, and bleeding hearts were still there perennial and growing as strong as ever.

I remember staying at a summer camp for a few days with a school program when I was 9, and the woods were already scary enough at night back then. Now, almost 8 years later I'm even more scared to look into the woods at night
I remember reading about a village in Turkey that everyone believed was cursed, because everyone died young and there were many birth defects. Later on, it was discovered that there was some asbestos-like mineral naturally occuring there in the soil, which caused the residents to develop symptoms comparable to asbestos poisoning. I wonder if something similar could be the case in Dudleytown, maybe some chemical that causes hallucinations and brain damage.

I live about a half hour from Dudleytown and I can attest to the fact that you CANNOT go there. Yes, it is private property, but I've heard from people who live right near it that cops regularly patrol the area. Especially around Halloween. I used to date someone who lived near an entrance and we actually got stopped on the road his house was on and he had to prove that he lived there. We did try to walk out there one time and about halfway there I was overcome with strong feelings of fear that I could not push through, I couldn't take even a single step past this spot where I froze.
Then you will know that the decendants of the Clarks still live in Cornwall, Harriet didn't go crazy and kill herself, and the whole story is 98% fiction.
I haven't listened to all the story yet but I'm also in CT and most of the story that gets told is untrue and urban legend. Dudley town is off limits. That's for sure and the neighbors DO watch for tresspassers. Many used walking trails up on the mountain but thrill seekers and a holes ruined it for everyone by ruining the woods and ruins and leaving trash everywhere. There is a lot of craziness that did happen but mainly be a of moldy rice and the mountain basically containing huge amounts of iron ore I believe it was. But I've been there and witnessed some crazy stuff I couldn't explain but we had respect. Just like people ruined "the little people village" in Naugatuck as well. They smashed all them beautiful concrete houses that they built. And no they weren't built by a crazy guy either. It was a gift shop. But please don't go. Its off limits
@@cooolchick647 That sounds about right. At least as the story is presented here, the facts don't even make it seem like it's all that bad a place and the few things that might just seem made up. The story presented here is that 30ish families lived there from the mid 18th to the mid 19th century and in the course of those 200ish people living there for a century there where maybe a dozen incidents. A possible murder, a few crazies, a few diseases... I mean... Is that all? Sounds pretty normal to me in the historical context. Yeah, people left in droves in the late 19th to early 20th century. Something tells me that this had little to do with any unusual creatures in the forest, like samsquanch, and much more to do with economics.
I know a women who went to Dudlytown with her teenage son, she said her son was never right after that trip. She believes something followed him home. Within a year his mental state deteriorated and by the end of the year he killed himself. He has said for weeks leading up to it that he kept hearing someone or something telling him to kill himself. Finally he couldn't take it anymore and gave in to the voices. Mr. Ballen is right, Don't go there!
I just read an interesting case study about a young man who was given a medication that contained poison hemlock to treat vertigo and experienced the same symptoms (depression, a hallucinations that came in the form of a voice telling him similar things). Perhaps you could point that woman towards that case study and hopefully it brings her some possible closure at least.
@@doctorstrainge Well, who is talking about medication, let alone that it would be necessarily detrimental. I know of some with bipolar type 2 that have been treated and function quite well. It may not be easy finding the right medication, but there usually are positive outcome prescriptions. This doesn't change anything about the position they are likely in, which is monetary issues, which contribute to it worsening the conditions, it isn't even an net even. Poverty is the first thing that should be done to address crime rates as it deals with the state of the offender when they offend. If one is to study crime rates while the COVID UBI was run in Canada, you will see them decrease, as the need to act criminally is minimized to satisfy Maslow's basic needs is manable. Money is the solution for the many, so it is the best first measure. Then education.

My brother decided he just HAD to check out Dudleytown after he had heard all the stories about it! This was back in the 1980’s. He saw the foundations and said the place just had an eerie feeling to it. He talked about the weirdest thing being the absolute quiet…no bird sounds,no animal activity…nothing! Scary!!

I have lived in CT my whole life and live near Dudley Town. I can attest that it is super earie and a lot of the claims, not all but a lot are in fact true. ALSO you WILL be arrested. The neighbors that live off the road leading into it are always paying attention to vehicles coming through. I don't blame them because it becomes a tourist attraction. People leave garbage and disrespect the area. You won't make it far before neighbors come out yelling, they will approach you and follow you and the cops show fast. Don't bother.

I'm from Connecticut. As a Girl Scout many years ago, my troop went on a day trip there. You aren't allowed to drink the water, but I can tell you... it is one of the creepiest places I've ever been. It is at least a full 10 degrees cooler just past the fence from the parking lot. No birds, no bugs. I swear I saw two kids about 5 years old running down the path in front of us, but when we rounded the corner they weren't there. Lots of house foundations... we must have gotten turned around at some point and ended up exiting from the other side, miles from where our car was parked. Instead of walking back through the forest to the car, we decided to walk all the way around... no one out on the road that day, no one in the little town we ended up walking through... when we finally made it to the main road, the first person to drive by us was someone we knew. One of our Scout Leaders went with him to get our car. I'd take walking those extra 3 hours over going back through any day!
@CarrieJess We chose that destination because we (the girls) were super into the paranormal, so we requested to go as it was only about an hours drive from our meeting location. About permissions, I'm not entirely sure, as this was in like 1999. I know the troop had to submit a request for an outing and it was granted. We got the exploration badge for our trip.

Did you see any animals like squirrels or birds? Sorry that was 2. Thank you.
@CarrieJess I didn't for one moment think you were rude. I genuinely was and am excited to answer your questions! The only point in which we had any misgivings was when we were walking through what seemed like an abandoned town outside of the state park, no one was out, the shops were all closed and we didn't understand, so we just kept walking until we found a state road. No, we didn't see any squirrels or birds, but just like normal, there were plenty of insects under rocks. I was about 14 at the time, so I feel you about feeling ancient!

I've noticed two other channels seem to copy his content. Wendigoon in particular. Was watching a video on Wendigoons channel and it felt like deja vu. Sure enough it was almost a copycat of a story MrBallen did.
I lived close to there almost all of my life, and I've gone hiking in dudleytown several times. The origin of it goes back into the late 1500's, with the local Indian tribes fighting with settlers. Then the Dudley family lived there and went crazy from mercury or lead poisoning. There was at least 3 times different families have tried to live there, all with strange deaths, etc. There are so many different telling of the stories that it's really impossible to know exactly what happened. But I can say the foundations are real. The road through there is real, with an entrance and exit both gated. Weird stuff goes on in there. Animals go quiet in the area of the foundations, that's absolutely true. The cold air is also true, but I have noticed that in other wooded areas close to there, that also have a small creek. That creek is barely a small stream. There's no way fish could be in it now, so maybe it was bigger back then. But the river bed or washout, whatever you want to call it, isn't big, so I can't picture it being wide enough for fish ever. Plus, that hillside is steep, it's basically the backside of Mohawk Mtn, the local ski hill. Any water coming down that mountain is fast moving. There is a very large river at the bottom of the valley, the Housatonic River. It's more likely any tales of fishing were actually done in the Housy, not the dudleytown stream. The "Dark Entry" association keeps on real good watch on the 2 spots that give access in there, and they will call the state police, and they will press charges. There is no place to park on either spot, and each entrance is on a small dead end road, with no reason for anyone to be on. So the cops are notified before you even see the gate. I'm high school, we went in there multiple times. One dude took a rock out of one of the foundations, to keep like a souvenir. He crashed his car on the way home. Someone else picked up a rock and threw it to try to see if there were any wildlife near, because we heard nothing. His hand was ice cold for 2 days. Another guy rode a 4wheeler in there, crashed bad, and spent a couple weeks in the hospital. Those stories are 100% true, and there may be a perfect explanation for each one, but it still helps keep the ghost town story going. It's kind of a shame that it's posted propertie. It's really nice in there, especially in the fall. It would be a great hiking trail, especially with the Appalachian trail so close. It's really cool to see the okd stone foundations of the houses. They are small, but smaller can be better during the cold winters. I was always hoping I'd see a dudleytown story done by McBallen.
Don't go anywhere near that place, also there is something called shetra it is like in that certain vicinity or in that area they have control and power and like they are very powerful in that zone, some places are habited by some energy which people like us cannot see them and feel them only through proper training and meditation such as yoga and real yoga patanjali practices will make you strong enough to see and understand such things also you need to be initiated by a proper guru. There are things in this world which our eyes can't see 🙈 It is not safe because sometimes they might latch on to you and I don't think so like us Indians practice daily Puja and worship deities that also acts as an protection. Just don't go baba you never know what might be stalking you and by the time you realise it will be late. Also ya a Aghori can stay there easily they are just awesome, they practice the vaam marg or we call it the left hand of the divine or practices to reach the gods. Respect them alot 🙏 Take care.
And with each story it gets more fantastical. DEMONS!! EVIL!!. No, there is a scientific explanation (mercury poisoning?) for what happened, but because it was so long ago, there isn't any way to determine what it was. And if it was mercury poisoning, then I can see what they don't want people entering into the forest.
In the 1700s this area was home to many hat makers and the fur trade hence the surname Tanner. Dudley town is known to be “poisoned” by mercury from the trades and is why many locals went “mad”
Milliners used mercury in the processing of felt for hat making That’s where the saying As Mad As A Hatter comes from I wondered listening whether it was something environmental as opposed to supernatural

I grew up in Litchfield and as a teenager we went to Dudley town many times to party, even right on the outside deck if this modern house on the hill where the NY wife went crazy. There are houses up there today and it is all private property so they will call the police on you. The road that used to go through and over the mountain is now overgrown. We used to party in the caves up there too. We even camped out overnight there long ago and freaked ourselves out but nothing happened. Birds are abundant, plenty of wildlife…it was just a bad place to try and put a town. No good water nearby, food spoiling, local minerals seeping into the water, Rocky mountainside with no good farming land, it’s no wonder it failed. People went crazy there because of lead, mold and other poisonings.
Grew up in Connecticut, went to that town a good 40 years ago used to have keg parties out there sometimes you’d hear whispering in the woods seem like it was all around. Then seem like it was next to you. Then it would stop !!

I must have looked over my shoulders 3 times and then when the dog came into the kitchen I jumped and yelled like a little girl hahaha. She’s looking at me like I’m crazy. Kudos Mr. Ballen for being able to scare a 40 year old man in his own home just by telling a story 😂. Love you content brother, keep up the great work. And congrats on the recent deal you landed. This was the first video I had to come to the comments for safety in 😂🙈 it was the laughter sound effect that got me- that and it being late at night and me being in a dark room.

When I was a kid I did incredibly stupid things for no reason other than to be obstinate. If I was told to keep out I went out of my way to go in. That ended when I was 20. There was a place I'd frequent near Medford Oregon that had all kinds of no trespassing signs and chains blocking off an entire section of mountain. When I got up I was in a very narrow valley covered in tiny wooden or cinder block buildings. Nothing was very interesting so I didn't stay long but it turns out I'm very lucky to be alive. This was a spot used by the army corps of engineering to test all manner of explosives. Those buildings I wandered in were likely wired to be blown apart or could have collapsed due to prior testing. Don't be stupid. Mind the signs.

I've hiked on a popular trail very close to Dudleytown and I agree there is a vibe. Also, in my experience the mosquitoes were so numerous it was practically unbearable. As soon as I stopped hiking for the day I jumped into my tent without cooking dinner. I wonder if the town was infected with a mosquito-borne illness.

My father and his friend went to Dudley town and he said they ran into a an elderly couple sitting on a bench there and they looked so real they had a small conversation with them and they turned away to continue walking, and they just vanished... crazy stuff. Its also said if you dare go into Dudley town, do not take anything from the area home and don't wear any shoes you don't plan on throwing away because the dark energy will follow you..
Me and a buddy went there about five years ago. Right to the entrance. The road there alone was pretty narrow and all uphill. We took this old truck I had but the thing was pretty reliable. We were contemplating whether or not we should go in, and to be fair I was pretty scared. My buddy being all macho said I’m going in. So from a distance I just watched him making his way through the forest. Out of nowhere we heard this loud branch snapping sound coming from further in the forest, my friend started running back. I was already freaked out so I preemptively put the truck in reverse, and the road was narrow so I had to back into this turn off to spin the truck around. As soon as my buddy hopped in the passenger seat the truck shut off on its own. The thing would not start. We sat there for five minutes trying to get it started. The whole thing was scary. Could it have been a coincidence, sure. But the weird feeling I had being there and the way things played out, not sure I’d ever go back there.

YES FINALLY. I live in CT and have had a chance to actually visit and tried to stay the night at Dudleytown. We made it until about 2 in the morning until the Cops got us and escorted us out. But we were seeing "bright shadows" (the best I could describe them) constantly. We thought we saw weird movements during the day but honnestly couldn't see anything. But as it got dark, there were these.. body shaped shadows but they were not dark? It's hard to explain, almost like of some one was shining a flashlight through fog but it was body shaped. (It was not foggy, and we would see multiple appear then disappear behind trees. So it wasn't a random hiker). I'll never forget it.
@rantaro_bb800 I'd have to say I felt confused because I really didn't know what I was looking at. I really wanted to get closer but it was dark out in the woods and I'm terrified of bobcats, lol.

For people freaked out, murcury is what did it. The water was contaiminated and exposere to murcury quite literally drives people mad. Its the reason the town was abandoned and many small towns sufferd similar fates from various poisons like lead.
So mercury causes cholera?

Probably what you saying but people like to make stories out of it i mean it is more interesting this way

Even mold in the air can make you hallucinate.
Omg that’s wild!! Why did they pick that place to take you & did you need permission?
@CarrieJess We chose that destination because we (the girls) were super into the paranormal, so we requested to go as it was only about an hours drive from our meeting location. About permissions, I'm not entirely sure, as this was in like 1999. I know the troop had to submit a request for an outing and it was granted. We got the exploration badge for our trip.
@@rebeccakaras2572 I gotcha. I wasn’t trying to sound rude, I was more curious as to why.
It’s funny bc in 1999 I was 16 & you’re right back then (I sound elderly now lol) things were way more lax. I will say I give you girls props you had some stones on you lol. I wouldn’t go there but I’m glad you guys got out.
One more question: did you feel as if you were in danger?
Lol, it’s scared a Girl Scout Hah Hah Hah Hah Hah Hah

There are things in this world which our eyes can't see 🙈
It is not safe because sometimes they might latch on to you and I don't think so like us Indians practice daily Puja and worship deities that also acts as an protection.
Just don't go baba you never know what might be stalking you and by the time you realise it will be late.
Also ya a Aghori can stay there easily they are just awesome, they practice the vaam marg or we call it the left hand of the divine or practices to reach the gods. Respect them alot 🙏
Take care.
Posted property?

In the 1700s this area was home to many hat makers and the fur trade hence the surname Tanner. Dudley town is known to be “poisoned” by mercury from the trades and is why many locals went “mad”

Since I be black, my story is more heart felt. White supremecy killed my parents. It forced white cops to gun down my parents bc someone said my parents be robbing a gas station. The gas station footage came out and obviously was rigged to make it look like my parents were robbing this store and beating up this old white woman but it ain't happen. My parents had given up they gang life 3 weeks before this happened. So it doesn't makensense they Robb again.

Just found this channel. You’re a fantastic story teller. 😊
You are in for a treat I've been watching Mr Ballen for year's now you should Binge watch some Sat! The difference between him and other channels is he includes video, audio, evidence and references that are 100% legit, he wont let you down...Welcome
Live nearby. Went up there tonight. Not nearly as scary as some people make it out to be.
