No. Marine Corps Boot Camp does not have curtains. Its called a rain room and the showers throughout all Marine life (except barracks or private quarters and occasional office building showers) will be open showers with either pole style multi- headed showers or individual shower heads lined against the bulkhead(s). Even at Staff Academy it was open showers. Also in Bootcamp and Infantry Training School (now SOI) was open toilets. No front dividers and sometimes no side dividers. Nobody cared because we were getting yelled at the entire time... we just wanted to get whatever done and get out of there...to be yelled at somewhere else haha.
Perhaps you misunderstood, I said I thought the pole showers were for marines only but no the navy has them too for boot camp after you leave the pearl harbor.
When I was at Great Lakes, in 1966 showers where all open and so was the shiters. No Problem same on my ship I was on for 4 years.. use your own soap etc.
In my bootcamp, back in 1997, we use to take shower all together with absolutely no privacy. But as you said, at the barracks or at the ships you have your own shower with privacy. P.S.: Brazilian Navy…
I was at great lakes in August 19 97 we had open showers with the showerheads on the walls no pedestal showers. I do remember that on Sundays. They called it Ricky Sunday. We were allowed to basically shower as long as we wanted for a certain part of the day and a few of us did just that it was relaxing, and the awkwardness goes away really quickly
RDCs would stress on shower time more so being apart of a push division (less time to graduate) although the same quals. We are not supposed to take unapproved items such as soap in a zip bag to swim in the early morning. The procedure is to hit swim quick wash down regroup with your division and get a proper shower. Well chief RDC was very happy to hear I snuck soap in a bag to skip the extra shower and be able to assimilate right back into schedule. For context I had to go for swim class as a way to have my left knee to recover from severe swelling without visiting corpman and getting asmod. 1 week of recovery plus sticking my knee onto the metal bunks when I sleep healed it right up 😂
Great Lakes 1994 - big square room with four showerheads on one wall and four more on the opposite wall. For the first four weeks we did showers "carwash style." Leave your folded towel on a shelf in the laundry room and line up with 79 other naked dudes, holding your warshcloth. Someone turns on the water in the room and squirts some bodywash on the first dude's warshcloth. First dude steps under the first showerhead and Papa Smurf starts counting out loud to ten, then yells "Switch!" First dude moves over to the second showerhead and second dude jumps under the first showerhead. And it progresses thusly until each recruit has visited all eight showerheads. So you get about 85-90 seconds under the lukewarm water (which is plenty of time) to give yourself a military shower. In the words of SMSW1 Felker, "I want you to wash your Major parts, and your Private parts. Wash your whole butt and your butthole. Wash your taint, your tween, and your undah. And wash your god-damned feet, Yeoman Smith!" Week five was service week and they let us take Hollywood showers. From week six onwards Papa Smurf would call groups of eight at a time and we got 3-5 minutes. We had rubber shower shoes that were subject to inspection, so after showers we would scrub them in the laundry sinks. I usually got to shower near the front of the line because I was "Chalkboard PO" and after showers I had to write the next day's schedule on the chalkboard.
Man I passed through RTC back in 2006 Div 100… listening to to talk just brings back a bunch of memories. I remember there came a point when everyone just started 💩 with the curtains open because some asshat would always walk by and open them🤦🏾♂️😂😂
1975 Great Lakes company 175 July 1, 1975 Open Showers ten minute port/starboard shower. Competing for Sinks was a bitch to shave and brush teeth. Most of the time you got into uniform still wet as we had to line up for chow. This is surprising as in High School at Gym Class we had nothing but open showers so there was no big surprise.
I was in Boot Camp 42 years ago, NTC Orlando, Fl, which has since been plowed down and made into a park, unfortunately. We had 2 huge metal poles with eight spigots out of each pole for our showers, no curtains, you had to hold your own bar of soap and bottle of shampoo with a little metal soapdish attached to the metal poles and of course the soap would slip out onto the floor because everybody was trying to use them all at once! There was no such thing as body wash back then! With 60 women in the barracks we had to wait our turn on the bench until the others were done, so you had to move your ass quickly! And if I remember correctly, there was a couple doors missing from the toilet stalls! Deliberate? Who’s to say! Needless to say you lost all sense of meekness after a few days and did what you had to do regardless of who was sitting next to you in the head or watching during showers! We were all in the same situation! We had less than five minutes from head to toe to get done what had to be done and out of there with a female CC watching in intervals. Back then there was no prior warning that a CC was coming into the shower room.. Things have obviously changed a lot throughout the years!
Yes, I went to boot camp in Orlando, in 81. There were no doors on the toilet stalls, and the showers were open as well. Didn't care for it, but yeah we dealt with it. With close to 80 women that had to shower in a short time, we actually had to share shower heads with another person, to get everyone through in time, I wasn't shocked about open showers since I guess a lot of schools do that, but the open toilets were a surprise. Like the guy in the video said... after a while you do adapt. Overall I do look back at boot camp as a great experience in my life.
I went in 1997 and we did the “car wash” method to meet the time limit. We had no bar soap only Pert shampoo. The first group gets wet then goes to middle and lathers up while the next group gets wet . Then you go back to rinse afterwards.
Luckily, our compartment had two heads in it. That was more of a blessing, than we acknowledged at the time. Sunday field days were the best, cause that was the only time we were allowed to take a shower longer that 3-5 minutes (I'd take a 20 minute hot ass shower every time). We had one of the four new ships they had just built at RTC. This was Sept 2006. The cans were divided with walls, but had no doors.
You might be surprised but nothing has changed since then. Although they have curtains between stalls now. Still, no doors. The "new" buildings in 2006 are probably the "old" buildings I walked through in 2022 hehe
Not sure if you have a video on this yet, but can you make a video explaining the quality of life in the Navy. I heard terrible things with sea duty, but heard that shore duty is alright. How does QOL compare to other branches with the exception of the Chair Force ofc.
I haven't been to sea yet but the guys who have told me that it tests the limits of human boredom, and the worst part is there's no internet or ability to go anywhere. They'd go to the gym a lot and be in good shape partially just because there was nothing else to do. When the ship pulls into a port you have more fun and you visit a lot of cool places. Here at this shore command besides the fact that I'm in a third world country everything was fine. I made friends, had a lot of free time and we used it to make the best out of the situation.
Company 158 RTC San Diego Feb. 19-May 14, 1964. Company Commander MMC James A. Hanley, Jr. Open bay showers. Get in get out. Navy showers. Wet down, turn off the water, soap down, water back on rinse off and get out.
There are a few navy bases such as naval air stations at NAS Oceana where they still use open bay showers in the gyms. That was back in 2010, 11ish. I don't if they still have them today.
@@HaedenBeck however, there were open bay showers in the barracks in a place called the Locker House on Keesler Air Force Base back in '98. My class stayed there for C-School (Navy Basic Calibration). I think that place is revamped now into something else.
Army basic training had these exact same shower heads and the rooms they were in were really small and one shower room for 2 platoons so that's 120 naked dudes trying to shower in a small room with 2 posts with 4 shower heads and its really hard not to drop your soap because there's no where to set it so your bound to drop it soon or later but the worst or funniest part was black dudes would actually point out dudes with small peckers and they would laugh and make fun of them, I was just glad they didn't say anything to me. We didn't split into groups we had to stand in line until there's enough room for you.
I went through boot camp at Great Lakes in 1983. We had free time and could shower anytime during that time, so the showers were never full of guys. I wasn’t bothered at all showering with other guys, just had to be careful to not look at anyone cute too much or I’d get excited. My only shower nightmare was the day I went to take a shower and found my best friend showering. Talk about awkward. I seriously thought I was going to get excited, as not only did I have a secret crush on him, but low and behold, despite being only 5’1” tall, he was gifted when it came to his manhood. So much so, as a straight guy I would have probably laughed and made a joke about it. But being gay, I just tried not to look down. 😅 Luckily, I passed that test with flying colors. We just chatted like normal the entire time. I remember boot camp quite fondly. Great experience overall and I really miss my little buddy.
Yeah man it's awkward but it's awkward for everyone but by the end you'll be talking and laughing with each other 😂I promise you boot camp will be the easiest part of your career. Good luck!
