In 63 you were damned lucky to make E4 in 4 years. To many were quoted by the fleet exams. Although somehow my company commander was a one hash mark chief. But, for the most part it was a tough road due to quotas.
You can still make E-4 if you're in an ATF rate (advanced technical field). For example IS' can make E-4 just by passing A school and arriving to their first command. They don't have to wait 30 months.
Nuke is a good way to get E3 before boot camp and auto E4 upon graduation of A School (3 to 6 months after Boot camp). There is also the opportunity get auto E5 if you reenlist 2 years after joining. It comes with a big bonus too. That said, being a Nuke is not for everyone and you don't get to choose what specific job you'll get, i.e MMN, EMN, ETN. It's the hardest school academically and a tough job in the fleet.
It's crazy how long their A school is, they were just graduating months after I showed up to my first command. The Navy does their best to try to retain those nukes too, since they could just leave and do the same job in the civilian world for much higher pay.
My brother was a Nuke. Flunked out just before finishing A school (one week left). I scored high enough to get into Nuke as well on the ASVAB. But, I've heard enough horror stories from my brother to know not to pursue that. I'm more interested in going the HM route anyway.
You want to strive hard and intentionally for that E4 level, life will become so much easier once you get that. That's why it's so important to get that initial jump to E2 or E3, there's a waiting period after E3 before you can become E4. I would add to all of this very useful information in the video, that it is very important to work on your military appearance - this counts for a whole lot when being evaluated and selected for promotion. Be squared away, look sharper than your peers.
Just want to thank you for 1st your service and a really good no nonsense channel . I'm a son of a sailor who served 22yrs and was in WW2 , Korean War , Cuban Missile Crisis . Now my daughter is getting ready for her ASVAB test in few days . Then MEPS next month . So as a dad , thanks for sound advice . Does the Navy have the Delayed Entry Program? My son is a junior in HS rn and keeps telling me he wants to join the Navy when he graduates HS. He seems pretty locked in on that decision so just wondering if there’s something he could be studying before if he does join
There are resources on this channel explaining what to study before going. Simply said, yes there's a delayed entry program and they offer classes and stuff on what to know before showing up to RTC. I'd highly recommend starting with the rank structure and general orders. If he already knows these things when he shows up, and passes the physical test right off the bat, he'll be promoted in boot camp.
My son joined in June. His advice is study the asvab test and get a very high score -retake it until you are happy with the score! It helps with your pay and bonus and jobs offers for after boot camp ❤ good luck!
Thanks for the video, Is it true that some rates start off at an e4? I was looking at being a CTT but there is a lot of mixed information about rates starting at e4. Im entering navy as a E3 how long do I have to wait to hit E4 and how hard is it to get E5 and up. And how can you become a officer once you join as a enlistment side.
No matter what rate you joined as, E-1, E-2, or E-3, it will be 30 months total time in service when you pick up E-4 automatically. There are special circumstances where you can skip ahead to E-4 early but for most people they just have to wait 30 months since the first day of boot camp. E5 and above is a challenge some people spend years on, but once you got it it's yours so.... There are many pathways to officer, I think a lot of your question is already answered in the video.
Go ahead tell me about the navy I spent 22 years in the navy once you get E3 you take test for promotion and that don't means you get promotion it depends on how many points you have and if you're in and over loaded it take many tests
Things have changed since you left, sir or madam. E-4 is automatic after 30 months now, until the next change occurs. You don't even have to do the PMK-EE for it anymore.
I’m prior service possibly going navy. I will unfortunately be an E3 entering again. Would I have to wait 30 months like you stated to get E4? Or what are my possibilities to get promoted faster?

What's the rush? Apply for OCS, speak with officer recruiters, and they should get you in. If you wanna be enlisted for a while and then go officer that's an option too since you already have the degree.

Wow 30 months to rank to E4? My Son is going in as E3 due to jrotc and they didn’t mention this- I think they are telling him he could rank up pretty quick.
It changed relatively recently. E-4 is a petty officer rate, basically an NCO, it shouldn't be available to someone after only 6 months of training in boot camp and A school like it used to be. Before being a leader someone has to be a great follower and understand what the people they're leading are doing because they've done it themselves for years.

Yeah it used to be 6 months after E3 you got E4 but now it's 30 months time in service. The reason for the change is that we had too many turbocrows.
