  • Indian Couple Gives Away $23 Million to Become Monks. Why? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
A Gujarat-based couple, from an affluent Indian business family, have donated their lifetime earnings of Rs. 200 crores, or $23 million. They are all set to adopt monkhood. They gave away the wealth during a ceremonial procession, which has drawn backlash on social media. Why did the couple do this? Also, why are they becoming monks? The couple belongs to the Jain community, which has a practice of “Deeksha”. This is a ritual of wealth renunciation. A ceremony where a person formally commits to live an ascetic or spiritually disciplined life. And this is not the only family. Many are accepting monkhood and giving away all their worldly possessions. Why is that? Palki Sharma tells you in this report.

Jains are a peaceful and well-respected community in India. There are only 9.5 million Jains in India (around 0.72 percent of the Indian population). However, most of our opposition leaders, Rahul Gandhi, Mamta Banerjee, and others only consider Muslims to be the ONLY minority. They pass laws to appease them. Islam is India's second-largest religion in India, with 14.2% of the country's population. It is called vote bank politics.

I remember in 2005-06, I was 7 or 8 years old when I come to know about this custom of giving out all money in charity and become a monk in Jainism. Daughter of Richest person in town decided to become a monk, she donated all the money she had on her name, and afterwards her all hairs were pulled out one by one and then a big yajna was organised and all the people of town were invited to attend the ceremony.
Becoming a monk in today's world is a big decision where some people make money stating that they are monks.

Its interesting how common rich people do this not just Jains or even for religious reason. Just goes to show how material possessions doesn’t equal happiness.

I don't know about liberation but I love them. Proud of them. Respect them & wish I should have enough strength to follow them. God bless them.

CHARITY is Great 👍 SHOWUP is NOT ! There are millions of Poor Indians, who need Help & it would have done Better Way, than Standing High Tall & Throwing Down to Poor & Displaying Internationally. Best Charity is that- When your Left Hand Don't Know When Your Right Hand Did CHARITY❤

Real challenge is not in giving up the family or worldly or material goods … real challenge lies in living our daily life with human heart & balanced mind , and gradually building the capacity of rising above surrounding challenges

If you listen to your inner voice before making a decision that decision can never go wrong. Jainism is beautiful but then, any belief system taken to the extreme (like starving oneself to death) is questionable. Wishing this young couple all the very best......it takes resolute courage to do what they doing.

Even Aghori babas do the same, they give up everything.

Starving oneself to death might sound a bit weird at first but it has many beliefs rooted in it. We may find it wrong but we can't come to an conclusion without any right knowledge about it.
