I disagree with the fingerprint reader location. Making it under lock button makes sense and has been there for most part of Xperia line up, and should forever be kept there.
There is no need for a gimmick that is under the screen fingerprint reader.

They even switched back from the rear fingerprint reader from the XZ2 and XZ3 because of complaints. And I don't think that they will ever try to change it again.

I've had my Xperia 1 mark ii for over two years now and I love it's camera system. It's the closest to an actual camera experience of any phone. And the large degree of manual control means that I'm the one taking the photos. Not the phone. As well as the natural colours. I have sometimes been able to get some astonishing shots for a phone camera. Is it for everyone? No.....but it doesn't have to be. Are all cars made for every type of customer? No. There are specific cars for specific markets and audiences.
The Xperia phones are a lot like a manual sports cars. If you are only used to and comfortable with an automatic sedan (an iphone or Galaxy) then you probably won't like it. But if you want something different (and Xperia phones certainly are different), and you want something with top of the line specs for media consumption and a camera system that can be tweaked and pushed to get the exact type of picture you want then it can certainly be a fantastic phone.

@@aaronloudnwireless And one other thing I will add. Is that Sony is smart to do their own thing. They aren't trying to replicate an iphone or a galaxy. Because those things already exist and are already good at what they do. And you don't compete by trying to do what someone else does well. You do what you do well. So offering a different and unique experience is the way to go. And with that 21:9 aspect ratio, 4K HD OLED screen made by their Bravia division, front facing stereo speakers, manual control camera system with a shutter button and physical variable lens (made by their Alpha division), as well as unique apps like cinema pro, photo pro, Bravia Core, and Music pro.....the Xperia phones at least do offer a unique experience and one that is different from the others.
I hope you consider doing a dive into the Bravia Core app on the Xperia 1 mark IV. Sony's 4K HD streaming service of their film library. And their new music pro app that allows for professional level audio recording. I think those could be interesting videos.

Great opinion and true, but in the opinions of another die hard fans (pixel peepers) is that their pixel technology is still from the X family era with nothing changed fundamentally but only the price. Not to mention the warming and shutting the processor or some apps (like in the Z family) and the fact it's still a fragile phone (getting hot deteriorates the water protection by any means - Sony has a bad history!) not amazing for its price. It really should have in basic mode more computational, then they will be compatible with many other average people and the manual with the expert ones. So it's quite stup!d as such trademark not to realize that, doing something more 'PRO' includes improving in all areas of usability of the product and not to put for a toy-like-deja-vu this price tag! For now, their upgrades didn't solve anything, mostly for the European models XQ_CT54. Hope they will! All the best!

So weird, why Sony's phone getting a lots of love in the comment section but the first thing I've seen in goole after typing "Sony phone" immediately followed by "failed" hmm..
The biggest improvement they made was having the camera app crash on you after 15 minutes so you can be spared the embarrassment of using this phone.
If they are lucky enough in the next 5 yrs maybe Sony would finally appear on the top 20 list of best smartphone maker company...I really hope they can atleast sold 100 phone a year now that would be record breaking for them.

I went from a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra to the Xperia 1 IV and couldn't be happier :-) It's way better in so many ways, and it'll hopefully get even better with future updates. I've experienced heating problems, but it hasn't caused any problems.
I think the fingerprint reader is placed exactly where it's supposed to be. I have used under-the-screen fingerprint readers before, both on OnePlus and Samsung, and they didn't work too well. The OnePlus 7 Pro reader was dreadful, actually.

I've had the Xperia Acro S, Play, Z1, Z2, Z5P, XZP, XA Ultra, 1 and now im using the Xperia 1iii.
Ever since i used the ip certified Xperia Acro S back in 2011 i refused to go back to a phone without the IP certification. It was just so handy and you did not really have to worry about water damage by minor accidents in the kitchen / shower. The only exceptions where the Play because of its gamer controls and the XA Ultra because it was a back up phone when i broke my XZP
I think Sony is not as popular because of a few minor previous shortcomings that had a big outcome during use in the past like an unusable phone when the screen cracked while the competition did not have this problem. And negative reviews by big youtubers like mkbhd. I remember he ignored and called ip something extra / overkill and that Sony should reconsider to make a rugged phone instead of a more life proof ip flagship it was overkill and not needed. 5 years later when Apple, Samsung and all of the rest started doing the same it all of the sudden became a must have for any flagship look up his and other old youtube reviews and see them downplay ip on Xperia devices ^^
Sony should do something about the thermal issues. My Xperia 1iii also heats up during camera usage and gaming the only thing to reduce this problem a little was by turing off 5g and by using hs power control during gaming for me.
That being said if the phone did not come with the thermal issues then it would be the perfect device that actually has it all. 4k, 3.5 mm jack, sd card slot, no notch, and a perfectly placed fingerprint scanner!
I hope they continue making phones while improving on overall quality. Either way my next one will be a Sony too 🤟🏾

i have never understood mobile phone manufacturers obsession with cameras. Since ALL phones today look identical, surely the best way to design a new form factor would be to start the design with a camera. Also we NEVER see camera manufacturers being obsessed with making the camera increasingly slimmer, only better at taking photos! So for a new phone form factor, we need to take the "Slim" out of the design ethos and start focusing on "Better" to truly replace a camera with your phone! To me mobile phone manufacturers are in a stagnation phase caused buy the "slim" obsession.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'd say Sony's obsession with keeping the practically the same design for their Xperia 1 phones is essentially what causes this phone's biggest issue. If they wanted to push the camera, they should've gone for a design that encourages pushing the camera. And merely rehashing a design that already had some minor overheating issues once more... but with a far more powerful CPU... isn't going to work since it's just going to cause a ton of overheating issues.
Sony should've gone back to the drawing board. Rather than trying to make it look like an Xperia phone, they should've focused having it work like it's supposed to. Now if I'm using the phone for 15 minutes on a semi-hot day, it already gets pretty warm. Then if I see something and take a handful of pictures it'll already start giving overheating warnings. That's just unacceptably bad.
Personally it won't affect me much since I don't take that many pictures. I mainly got it because I don't want a f***ing camera hole ruining the front screen and refuse to go for phones with trash resolutions below 1440p (seriously Asus should be ashamed with their ROG 6 phone having a pathetic 1080p for a 'gaming' phone). Still, it's going to be a major issue to anyone wanting to use this device for an actual hobby or for professional pictures/movies.

But there's a catch here. Samsung uses Ultrasonic on its flagships and that is what having issues with screen protectors. The more common optical fingerprint scanners does not care about that. However only Ultrasonic fingerprint scanners are as secure as the capacitive ones as the optical ones that most other manufacturers uses is only a 2d picture from your fingerprint, meanwhile the ultrasonic makes 3d map. Also opticals usually have issues with more rough fingers (See JerryRigEverything, his fingerprint is barely visible after all the handywork he does and he usually cant register is for optical fingerprint phones, yet ultrasonics works really fine)

Xperia phones getting better from year to year, I want to buy this phone but with the overheating problems I will wait for the Xperia 1 Mk V. This will work with an 8gen2 chip not buildt by Samsung, and this will be a cooler chip:). And next year it should be a perfect phone 😊👌. Perhaps with a little bit of a point and shoot software for fast taken pictures and the alpha software for the pictures I have a little bit of time to take the perfect shot:), so people have the choice and the option to decide. And if Sony's camera software get a little upgrade and take its best from the hardware when no other phone will take photos like a Xperia 😉, love Sony 👌nice greetings M.

I would love to have purchased this phone, since on paper, it has everything I want (no hole punch / notch, dual front-facing speakers, microSD card slot, etc), BUT there are 2 factors preventing me from purchasing it:
    1. It is not cheap in any way whatsoever. I’d be comfortable paying $1,200 for it, but not what they’re asking for currently...
    2. You touched on this, but this is my main issue with Sony’s Xperia phones: overheating. I had an Xperia XZ a long time ago, and everytime I opened up the camera app, the device would overheat & slow down EVERYTHING. And as someone who travels to Southeast Asia a lot, it is extremely frustrating. This has been an issue with Sony phones for a long time now... not sure why they haven’t fixed it since most other manufacturers using the same chips have done a great job with it. For me, this frustration alone doesn’t justify the price.
Also, does the phone still shut itself down when you take out the microSD card without turning the phone off? That was also annoying.
Aside from those issues, I hope Sony continues with that form factor. They just need to improve their thermals....significantly...

I had great expectations for this phone and so happy to finally have sd card, headphone jack, log footage, 3 lenses. However, in turned out to be a complete garbage. I returned mine a week ago. 1st, it overheats in 1 minute when shooting video at max resolution and then bricks...
You have to wait 5-10 minutes for the phone to cool down and then force reboot. 2nd, Zig Zag passcode failed on me when I remembered the shape. (Maybe its Android, not phone) 3rd, poor cellular connection. Everybody was saying I was cutting off while being in the city. 4th, my favourite video editing app VideLeap took forever to render 5 sec video, when my old iPhone 7 takes a split second.
I wish everything they advertised worked smoothly, but in reality, very unreliable product. They have to fix a lot of bugs. Kept it for 2 weeks and returned.
