    [SONY XPERIA 5 IV REVIEW]
    Back in May, I called Sony’s Xperia 1 IV “An Entire Film Studio In Your Pocket.” The trouble is … it’ll cost nearly $1600 when it finally launches in the US later this month.
    So Sony did what Sony does: packaged up most of the important parts of the 1 IV into a more petite package with a similarly shrunken shelf price. I’m Michael Fisher and I took the new Sony Xperia 5 IV to Sun Valley, Idaho to see how much compromise you need to settle for when you buy an Xperia for $999.

I also need a headphone jack and sd card slot. Now, how many options do I have, if I want the fastes possible SoC, a headphone jack and an sd card slot? Yes, Sony exactly and nothing else. Sony could've used the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and not downgrade their telephoto camera if they wanted to appeal to a mass audience, but no. Just Sony being Sony. Credits where it's due, good of them to keep the headphone jack and microSD slot.

    I'm on my third Xperia, a 1 III. The 4k displays in all of my Xperias have been overkill. The overheating while shooting video is very annoying. The auto camera mode meh. However, for me these are small sacrifices. The headphone jack and expandable memory are huge for me. The front facing stereo (real L/R stereo) speakers are wonderful. I'm not worried about it getting wet. The battery life is solid. I love that it's mostly stock Android. The photo pro app is fantastic when you have the time/means to mess with it. I went to Colorado in May and got landscape photos so good that I didn't miss my DSLR. And as is the case with a lot of Sony products over the years, these age very well. My last two Xperias made it 2 and 3 years respectively before being replaced, still looked and worked great, batteries still held charges very well. If Xperias are niche phones, then I absolutely belong in that niche crowd.

      Bought my 5 III back in april. Upgraded from my trusty old LG G6 that had had a tough life. My must-haves were micro SD and headphone jack and wanted the 8-series snapdragon, because I do plan on keeping this phone until it truly dies. The only option within reach of my budget was the 5 III and now I couldn’t be happier. Still plan on refurbishing that G6 though and keep as a back-up device

      @@Dimondminer11 it got me through 4 and a half years of abuse, it will now barely charge because the charging port is busted, the rear glass is completely in spider-web cracks and the camera lens is so scratched it compromises image quality. At the point I switched the battery still got me through a day, but only just, if I would go out in the evening I would have to charge it beforehand. The display also has slight image retention/burn-in which is interesting because it’s an IPS LCD panel, not an OLED.

      @ShawnTheDriver ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Honestly that's what I love about his reviews so much and I've noticed that too. If the device he's reviewing has been advertised to be geared toward a certain type of user, he will tailor his review for the type of user that device has been created for. I notice this the most with the laptop reviews. Many reviewers just use the same generic script on all of the devices going through the same talking points, and to be fair Michael does occasionally to because there are some things you HAVE to mention...but he does it in a way that will keep the person the device was created for engaged while also making it understandable and entertaining for everyone else. Michael is the best tech reviewer hands down.

      @@ShellymanStudios I know, and I have to ask why? Sure, the first-gen 8xx chipsets from Qualcomm were terrible, and the heat was so bad on some Xperia models that it melted the glue around the case and allowed water in - so much so that Sony stopped marketing the water resistance as they had before.
      But, even though modern Snapdragon SoCs can still be quite toastie, NO other other manufacturer (TTBOMK) has the same issue with their devices. The only other phone(s) I recall having similar problems was the LG G3 and G4 (G4 especially bad) but LG solved the issue after that. Why not Sony?

    I disagree. The headphone jack is superb, trust me, I use them with the DCA Aeon Noire and it's great. The stereo speakers, once you switch on dolby atmos, make the earphone-less youtube experience not only bearable but quite frankly enjoyable. And the camera app has turned me from someone who never took any pictures for fun into someone who loves messing about with the settings to either capture a great raw to then edit or experiment with shutter speed for artistic shots.
    If you don't care about music, small quality of life improvements or having fun, whilst taking pictures, then Sony is not for you. But, if you do, then I'd suggest to give them a go, the next time you shop for a phone.

The efficiency of the 8 Gen 1 is actually worse than the 865 from 2 years ago, heck it's much closer to the 855 in terms of efficiency. When you factor in the 60% increase in the max power usage, well you get this and plus Sony doesn't throttle the chipset unlike of other companies like Samsung where the limit the chipset to 50% of its power unless you start running a benchmark

    Why do all reviewers fail to mention the very important settings that they were using when the phone overheated? Resolution, framerate, HDR, etc. 4k video recording is unnecessary unless you're making videos for big screens, and you definitely don't need 4k at higher than 30fps. Even when making content for youtube, most people don't watch at resolutions that high, and like you said in this review 4k on a smartphone (what everyone uses to watch videos) is overkill, so there's no real need to have 4k video in the first place.

I do however still love having front facing speakers, with the added bonus of the jackplug (I don't use expanded storage, so that's not an issue). It would be great as a part of the review if it was included if the manufacturer has committed to any sort of roadmap for software updates and for how long if they have. The reason I suggest it is that with the expense of many phones there is now a real expectation of using them for years. This isn't so much an issue with Apple as you can usually expect 4-5 years of OS updates and security patches, however with Android phones many do not get the next years main OS update or get one main update 6 months late and a year of secuity updates before they dry up. This really changes their value proposition meaning they are not long term options for the price.

      @@darthmortem585 Well yes but actually no on your first point. While Sony is a giant electronics and media conglomerate(Still much smaller than the likes of apple or Samsung), the different parts of a conglomerate are all essentially individual companies of their own. It's rarely a thing for specific parts of the company to make money and other parts then burn that money.
      As such this relatively miniscule Sony mobile division is forced to maintain profitability on its own, something they have been struggling and barely succeeding to do the past few years since the new series of phones came out.
