Number one tip to new fans- (No shit here) don’t worry at all about the lines and circles on the ice. It’s not important at first when you’re watching. They mean nothing after awhile. You have no idea how many people I’ve tried getting into hockey and their first question is “I just don’t understand all the stuff on the ice it’s too confusing to look at” WATCH THE PLAY, THE FLOW OF A GAME WHERE A TEAM IS BUZZING AROUND. Huge thing to touch on for newbies
I learned the difference between refs and linesmen from a random fan at my first live game (1995 I was 10). He took the time to tell me the refs have the orange armbands and call penalties. The linesmen call offsides, icing, hand pass, ect. Thanks random Sabres fan from 1995!

Trying to demonstrate "goalie inteference" during the meetups will be a compilation of people touching the goalie ranging from a slight brush to a full on charge. New fans can figure it out from there because we veteran fans sure as hell still don't know what this rule is!

Glad you called out the gatekeepers out there. I never understood dumping on newbies trying to learn the game. I would love to see hockey compete with the MLB and NBA for TV time in the States. And the only way this happens is to grow the sport.
Wish more people had this mindset. I’m sure new fans or casuals get pushed away from the sport because of how hard some veteran fans can be on newcomers. More people enjoying the sport is good for hockey.
I’ll give you an example of why. Because in order to get casual fans to watch, you feel the need to start changing and adding stupid things to the game, to get people who don’t really care about the sport, just about all the new crap the sport is trying to do to get new fans. For most old school NFL fans, they can’t stand what’s become of the NFL with all the other extracurricular bs that goes on. So, you effectively push out what fans of the actual sport loved about the game in order to please people that only have a passing interest. If you like the game that much, jump on in, we just don’t want it to turn into a circus in order to get some new blood.
I don't guess I understand why people hate on Jarry so much. I mean he's still young, and yeah he didn't have a great season this season, but he's not necessarily bad either. Does he have things he can improve on? of course he does, but as a goalie myself lemme tell ya, we ALWAYS have to be improving on things and making adjustments to better our game. People are a little to hard on Jarry in my personal opinion. Maybe it's because I'm not a Pens fan, but a lot of people were hating on Dobby from my Stars before that run last season when he showed he can still be the unbreakable machine, granted he didn't do well this season, but again I don't blame him I blame the other parts of our team like our D core.
This was my first year as a hockey fan. I probably don’t have any good observation. I decided I wasn’t going to learn analytics and stats outside of the very basics like goal numbers. I haven't really had any bad experience interacting with other hockey fans, It's usually pretty friendly, even when I was learning (And still learning) Channels like yours are so good and informative!

When in Vegas maybe take one day off the strip. Hammers Bar and Grill in Henderson Nevada. Owner is a former career Minor League enforcer. Hockey nights are a blast.
We want to rent a car and head to the desert for a hike when we head there in December (fingers crossed that we get to go) after we had some desert time a few years back, but it was too hot to really enjoy it.
I live 5 minutes from Hammers and I can vouch for this. NFL Sundays aren't too shabby, either. Damn, now I'm craving those teriyaki wings. BTW, if you see this, Shannon...there's open desert just 5 minutes away from Hammers. There's walking trails at the foot of Black Mountain and other desert trails that lead to a large dry lake bed.
To any new fans seeing this, welcome :) A friend of mine recently got introduced to hockey and is one of the most passionate of all of us - so, welcome!
I grew up watching my San Francisco Giants and 49ers in the 70's and 80's but once we got our San Jose Sharks in 1991 I was instantly hooked! Hockey has the speed and power of football while also having the strategy and tradition of baseball. When people ask "what is your favorite team?" I always say Sharks first then 49ers/Giants second because I love the game of hockey😁 If your new to the game I highly recommend watching Shannon/The Hockey Guy because he is truly the best. I won't lie and say I have watched him from the beginning but for the past 4 plus years he has been my go to guy for anything hockey. To Seattle fans see you next season and good luck, I just hope that your not as good as Las Vegas was in there 1st year😆
I'm a new hockey fan from Cleveland, OH and it can be hard to watch games here. Few people in northeast Ohio care for the Jackets so I've never really had a connection to them. I like the Leafs, but I chose the Kraken as my favorite team so that I can enter the league along with them. I've been deeply invested in learning about hockey recently, but it's trickier than other sports to follow due to lower exposure. Regardless, I'm excited and thankful that so many fans are helping out beginners like me
Certain dynamics operate exactly the same in fútbol (soccer). I’m a crazy hockey fan but also I follow fútbol in my country. The thing that made easy for me to understand hockey (a thousand years ago hehehe) was that I could relate to the dynamics of GM-coach-refs-goalie. I went to the stadium every weekend with my dad and he complain first about the GM, then coach, then ref, then goalie and the ultimate guinea pig was the top scorer that had not score in a while. I love your channel!! This videos make me happy and are so informative. Hugs from Chile 🇨🇱

Good to be back Shannon! Great to see you doing a video for new fans of the game. If there is anyone on TH-cam that can help grow the game it is you sir. Your style is clear, easy to understand, and fun to watch!
I used to work for the Canucks Store, mostly during games. One time a family from Africa came up to me and said they knew nothing about the game, and asked me to explain it to them lol. Put me on the spot much hahaha. That’s a lot to explain to somebody in like 5 minutes haha.
I feel like this video is fantastically educational for new fans trying to approach the game, all while being very entertaining for long-time hockey fans. We sure are an odd folk.
Thank you for being so welcoming to newcomers. I got into hockey as an adult only a few years ago and the gatekeeping almost pushed me out. Videos like this made a difference to me back then
That is why you are The Hockey Guy. I learn what hockey was and how it was played from this channel when Vegas came into the league. Colleagues at work give me the blank stare “do I reallt have to explain that to you”. Pulling goalies to off sides, God Bless You Shannon, thank you thank you thank you for explaining Hockey to newbies!!!
Been watching hockey since 1967 when the NHL expanded and created the St. Louis Blues. We were fortunate to get the great Hall of Fame play-by-play man Dan Kelly. In the first few years of the Blues broadcasts, Dan would explain a lot of the rules on the fly during the game which really helped us newbie fans.
My morning coffee and THG video! Who else here has stayed awake eyes barely open to watch Shannons final review of a game in the past. I emailed you in the past Shannon and when you do come to Vegas let me know. Id be glad to take you around to see all the non strip sights that makes us love Nevada. Thanks for the video and GO KNIGHTS GO!!!
As a fan who jumped into hockey on the day of the expansion draft for Vegas as a Vegas fan, I’m glad you made this. I’ve kinda followed hockey a little bit before Vegas, but not really. Even though I’ve been watching for a few years now it’s still interesting. Also, I’ve got a friend joining the hockey world he’s hopping in with Seattle, I’ll make sure to send this his way!
Games last night are ones that I think hurt attracting new fans. Those people that say, "I don't watch hockey. All they ever do is fight." Yet those first three goals by Colorado you saw great passes, great goals, but the fighting later on is what got the most attention.
I remember watching a game in Britain and a newbie fan began slating the referee. "The guy hasn't got a clue about the rules" he told me. The ref was Moray Hanson former team GB netminder. 😉
Great video! Although I'm a hockey fan from Wisconsin, I lived in Phoenix when the Coyotes began their first season there. The local newspaper ran all sorts of 'hockey 101' stories in the sports section, because like you said, being a hockey fan can be tough at first. Needless to say, as someone who KNEW the rules, I was MORE confused after reading what an Arizona paper printed. LOL
I like the reffing in hockey waaay more in the NHL than the NFL. I like it because it's on the fly, it's their best judgment for the most part without slowing the pace of the game by reviewing every single last play.
That Sabercats jersey sparks some nostalgia. They used to give us free tickets to Sabercats games in elementary school. I just used them as bookmarks. Should’ve went to a game but I didn’t grow up in a hockey environment
When I was a couch for my kids when they were younger, I took a ref course to help me (didn't grow up around hockey so I tried to learn as much as I could). From that I learned that the only consistency in reffing is inconsistency. The biggest thing they pushed was be committed to your call. Basically, you had to sell it wether it was correct or not. That seemed to be one of the biggest problems. Well, that and all the ambiguity in the rule book itself.
Hey I’d love to see you give an update/ your thoughts on Seattle right now. Also would love to see you wear one of the great new sens jerseys you got. Great content as always!
I watched hockey off and on for awhile but really started getting into it in the last few years. I think I have a grasp of things but would love a Shannon explains the rules of hockey video.
As a new hockey fan who recently moved to LV and organically became a die hard, thank you for this video. Spot on. I hope Seattle’s fan base won’t get as much condescending hate comments from the old fans like we have
But see I'm new to this, if someone could just explain; Then the look. So true THG. I remember being somewhere around 7 to 10 when I started watching hockey. My brother and I learned from ESPN and Sega Genesis NHL, but with a doubt, I've given a look like that and I've been given a look like that. Right on with your take on the biz. Thanks
Welcome new fans and a special hello to new Seattle fans who subscribe to the THG. For all of the old fans, plan a trip to Seattle. Great food and cold beer are everywhere. Great place to visit
I really appreciate this video and would definitely appreciate more hockey 101 videos! I’ve watched since 2019 and watch all the CBJ games I can and still don’t understand some of the rules. Thanks for all you do THG!
Also a word of advice to the newer fans (although this is tough long time hockey fans too) try not to get too attached to a player they could get traded when you least expect it. Also fans tend to curse the GM when their favorite player is traded. People also like to grade trades right after they happen too. (Don't recommend that either).
Welcome new fans!!! There’s no better place to get your hockey news.

(p.s. in response to what you were saying in the Avs vs Knights game, please keep talking about the scrums and unfriendliness when it happens. I'm always fascinated to hear about what does and does not get a reaction out of these guys.)
This place is just because of a good community trust me it’s very exclusive especially in certain areas where hockey is HUGE.
I think that refers more to reddit and hfboards.
Do you mean Can Can? 😂
@@derkaiserzen "And they got so happy that the Avs got 4 minutes for it"
I'm pretty new to hockey compared to a lot of people subscribed to this channel (I Started following the NHL in the last season, And fell in love with the sport) Just before corona hit 🙄.
I haven't really had any bad experience interacting with other hockey fans, It's usually pretty friendly, even when I was learning (And still learning)
Channels like yours are so good and informative!
Gatekeeping sucks in every context, including hockey.
I like when a new fan ask a question..i will gladly explain the rules and every other details, more views for the NHL and we keep growing :)
I always worried I’m gonna annoy people when I do. I appreciate people like you. 🙏
When I was getting into hockey (a few years ago), and learning the rules, I had mostly good experiences with other hockey fans.
I think it's a minority who are jerks.
Dude i love the sabre cats! A lot of fighting from what I remember; people used to have cowbells! We got free tickets at my elementary school.
I’ve been an extremely casual Devils fan for about 10 years now, I’m trying to get more into the NHL, it’s history and the Xs and Os of the sport. Excited about the upcoming season for my team and thank you for the video
Newish fan here from New Zealand. Been watching the Avs for a couple years. Great game
Regardless, I'm excited and thankful that so many fans are helping out beginners like me
So funny I just yesterday watched his “new fan” video from when LV joined.
0:48 *truer words have never come out of someone’s mouth before this*
Certain dynamics operate exactly the same in fútbol (soccer).
I’m fairly new to hockey .. only started watching 2 years ago and still learning .. I was born and raised in Florida .. and needless to say, we weren’t raised on hockey here 😂😂 but it’s the only sport I watch now and love it!!
BAM! Friends for life
Came to this video because I’m a Chicago sports fan and we just got the 1st ovr pick and I’ve been hearing how Connor Bernard is a generational talent so why not start and see the rise of this kid
865 degrees Celsius, come on man, I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate
well aint that ironic
I know right? Vegas doesn’t use Celsius. Silly Hockey Guy.
as far as new fans inclusivity goes: i recommend hanging out with bruins fans. i joined multiple hockey team discords lately and out of all of em the guys at bruins have been the most welcoming and love answering questions i got.
Long time hockey fan here.. and I watched it anyway :) Perfect video man! and welcome to ALL new viewers to Hockey!
This is an absolutely amazing video. Been watching my whole life, but sent this to a buddy of mine who just got into the sport (this was his first season following)
lol Love videos like this Shannon...It's just as entertaining for us old fans too.
The hockey community is very welcoming , thank you !!
If you're a new hockey fan. THG has a massive library of all things hockey! Infinite content to mull through and learn! Have fun!
Great Summer School😎
Thank you for being so welcoming to newcomers. I got into hockey as an adult only a few years ago and the gatekeeping almost pushed me out. Videos like this made a difference to me back then
That is why you are The Hockey Guy. I learn what hockey was and how it was played from this channel when Vegas came into the league. Colleagues at work give me the blank stare “do I reallt have to explain that to you”. Pulling goalies to off sides, God Bless You Shannon, thank you thank you thank you for explaining Hockey to newbies!!!
Thank I’m very new to hockey
Get the hell outta here
@@andrewhogan6533 thx brodie
Been watching hockey since 1967 when the NHL expanded and created the St. Louis Blues. We were fortunate to get the great Hall of Fame play-by-play man Dan Kelly. In the first few years of the Blues broadcasts, Dan would explain a lot of the rules on the fly during the game which really helped us newbie fans.
Newish fan, I understand some of the rules, but look forward to learning a lot more about it. Love this channel for this very reason!
You've come to he right place!
Thanks for the video to help out new fans
Thanks for this, long time Habs fan from the UK but even after many years I encounter some of these attitudes.
This was my first season actively watching hockey. It’s been real fun and I look forward to what’s in store for the future of the NHL and AHL
The New Orleans Saints callout hurt me a little, Shannon. Keep up the great work :)
Games last night are ones that I think hurt attracting new fans. Those people that say, "I don't watch hockey. All they ever do is fight." Yet those first three goals by Colorado you saw great passes, great goals, but the fighting later on is what got the most attention.
The Hockey community is lucky to have you. Your hard work is greatly appreciated.
I'll never forget the first time I saw cross checking get called. I was so confused 😂
I remember watching a game in Britain and a newbie fan began slating the referee. "The guy hasn't got a clue about the rules" he told me. The ref was Moray Hanson former team GB netminder. 😉
You know he is right.
@@catherinelynnfraser2001 There were many nights it felt that way, but he was far from the worst.
Man, I’m gonna be killing it from now on. Thanks! And fire Bettman, hate that guy! :)
You fit right in already, welcome to hockey fandom
Don't forget that any time you see Bettman you need to start booing as loud as you can.
Much love from Tacoma!! Nice shout-out to our past - thank you! Counting the days till the Kraken hit the ice now!
I take friends to Major Junior games. They are encouraged to ask questions and I politely inform them of the rules and such. They love the experience.
As a new fan to hockey, I can confirm! Rules enforced sometimes is very confusing.
That Sabercats jersey sparks some nostalgia. They used to give us free tickets to Sabercats games in elementary school. I just used them as bookmarks. Should’ve went to a game but I didn’t grow up in a hockey environment
I really think that Seatle fans will do fine......they will have a good season.....its all new and great.
Don't forget to mention the umpiring in MLB. The lack of consistency in the strike zone is atrocious.
From the thumbnail I can tell this is going to be a good video
This guy deserves so much more subs and views. I love him
"Just threw his corpse on the ice" also known as "George Perros Vision"
Hey I’d love to see you give an update/ your thoughts on Seattle right now. Also would love to see you wear one of the great new sens jerseys you got. Great content as always!
I watched hockey off and on for awhile but really started getting into it in the last few years. I think I have a grasp of things but would love a Shannon explains the rules of hockey video.
As a new hockey fan who recently moved to LV and organically became a die hard, thank you for this video. Spot on. I hope Seattle’s fan base won’t get as much condescending hate comments from the old fans like we have
Oh my, an IHL (remember the IHL?) Sabercats jersey! I still have some old Sabercats merchandise from when they existed.
Thanks
THG is the best for hockey news if your a new fan for sure, that’s the main reason
Second is.....CATS
I really dig the vintage Tacoma Sabercats sweater man. I remember going games as a kid and seeing my favorite at the time Dampy Brar!!
Awesome this is the video I have been waiting to see. I heard about you. And I’m getting into watching hockey. Thanks
Welcome new fans and a special hello to new Seattle fans who subscribe to the THG. For all of the old fans, plan a trip to Seattle. Great food and cold beer are everywhere. Great place to visit
If you're new to hockey this channel is great for hockey content.
Why you route for players and not teams.
