Fun fact: the concept of a shield that regenerated mana while it was up originally came from a ring called "Mark of the dragon lord" that dropped rarely off the last boss of LBRS.

@TFAegislash 57 Drain Life would most likely stay with Warlock if Necromancer is the next class, if Dark Ranger is the next class though then Drain Life will be taken from Warlocks (rightfully just like how Metamorphosis was rightfully taken) but not Drain Soul
That was more of the class redesign in MoP when they made so that everything palas do gives them holy power, like Judgement(which was just a talent as it was too powerful to give out right away), Exorcism, so instead of it being the reason it was more of the afterthought like with the hunters. Pretty much all of the tiersets in DS became a part of the class mechanic in some form, they must've added that while developing MoP, not adding it in later on as Hiru is trying to make it look like. Half of these are just flaws in the game design that had to be adressed and were but in a way that tested it before implementing into the game. Like that mage tier13 srtbonus that reduced the cooldown of their major dps cooldown spec based (AP for arcane, Combust for Fire, Icy veins for Frost), which was somewhat in early test in cata with the rogu mechanic of refreshing cooldowns per cp used on harmful finishing moves. Then they tried to implement it as a secondary stat (versatility) in WoD and made SoO trinkets (Eye of Galakras and the Sha trinket which name I can't recall for agi users) but what happened was peoppe would go for that asap and make theor Major cooldowns not so major, so they changed their mind and the rest is history. So the causative here actually is reversed. There is actually more errors in the logic in this Vid, but I'll let that slip as people seem to enjoy it anywya, who am I to tell them otherwise?
Death knight tier 20 unholy 4 piece set bonus originally was every time you spent a rune u would get 6 seconds shaved off ur army of the dead CD which made a 10 minute cooldown function more like a 5 minute cooldown. It was later converted to army of the damned in BFA... Nobody picked it though because blizzard decided to go big brained and make gargoyle a TALENT to get some nostalgic wrath feels instead of making it baseline for unholy dks like it has been since cata... With shadowlands, gargoyle is becoming baseline and army of the damned not only shaves off army CD and apocalypse CD but it also summons a magus of the damned as well...
The Tier 10 Retribution Paladin 2-set used to be my favorite(which I think might've led to Divine Purpose being put in). Was hoping it would make this list. I clearly remember screaming in my headset "MORE SPINS" as the divine storm cooldown kept resetting.
Hirumaredx: "I make videos about WoW and nothing else" Me, who has multiple tabs open with videos from "The Duel Logs" channel playing to compare voices: "Yeah. Absolutely. Nothing to see here."
I think the 8 set T2 for mages inspired Hot Streak in some form. It gave your spells a chance to basically give you a free Presence of Mind. I think it was “fireball, frost bolt, and arcane missile have a 10% chance to make your next spell with a casting time less than 10 seconds instant cast” That along with PoM Pyro mages and how Pyroblast was never used outside of one of these two abilities is probably why Hot Streak was introduced, and they made it match the flavor of Fire Spec which was focused around Crits.
1:35 the DK Tier 9 4-set bonus which made one of the diseases able to crit was so insane that Tier 9 was better than Tier 10 for Unholy DK for most of ICC and turned Unholy into hands-down the #1 AOE dps in the game. Unholy's a treat to play in T9/T10 on pservers.
The 4-set feral pvp bonus definitely did stack with feline swiftness; a cat with 4 set bonus could outrun a cheetah without. (At least in early WoW expansions)
This was a really informative video and I really enjoyed it. Not to nitpick, but I noticed you spelled mana with two Ns (manna) a couple times and I thought I would just point the typo out.
The death knight tier set from ToS got turned into a talent row. I enjoyed the effect from it so much that I didn’t switch my tier set around during Antorus. Basically, when I use a rune my Army of the Dead would shorten its Cooldown. So instead of using it once a fight, I was able to use it 3 times per boss fight on average. It was awesome.
Rogue ICC 2 set bonus was also pretty cool. Caused tricks of the trade to generate 15 focus instead of costing 15 focus, essentially adding a whole new button to a rogue's rotation to be used off cooldown. Also helped the class feel more fluid.
Tier 10 Protection Paladin Lightsworn Plate set bonus was magnificent: at 2 pieces my Hammer of Righteous did 20% more damage, and at 4 pieces my Divine Protection granted 12% Dodge. Keep in mind that I stacked Agility, giving me around 38% Dodge with raid buffs, and when I popped Divine Protection I had almost 50% Dodge - as much as a Bear Tank. One time my raid died on Sindragosa and I fought by myself for around 3 minutes and killed her. I could single-tank the Lich King. That bonus set just put me over the top.
Elemental 2 set from firelands had flame shock ticks have a chance to remove the cooldown and cast time of your next lava burst. This was made a passive in mop and is still in the game today
You forgot about the enhancement shaman T19 4p, which used to increase the critical strike chance of Stormstrike by 40% whenever you triggered Stormbringer. During 7.1.5 this set bonus was so powerful that in the next patch, 7.2.5, the talent Tempest was changed to work just like this tier set bonus. When 7.2.5 was released, a new effect was added to T19 to replace its old 4p bonus, since it became a talent!
missed one :) survival hunters have a talent in tbc which places a debuf on the target that gives AP based on your agy after crt and its actually a tier set bonus in vanilla
I think that when it comes to Shamans, much more impactful ability that came from Tier set bonus was Maelstrom Weapon for Enha Shamans. I think it was on some Burning Crusade Tier set, and gave you a charge up to 5 charges that reduced a cast time of all your spells by 20% per charge, up to 100%. Back in the day, this was totally vital to Enha Shamans, cause as they were a melee class, casting during combat would mean stop auto attacks. And Enha Shamans were probably the most heavily auto attack based spec because of Windfury, Flametongue, Frostbrand, and various other passive effects with a chance to proc on attack. And back in the day, different specializations didn't have entire sets of abilities tailored to them. Only very few special abilities from talent trees. And in BC, Shamans only had ONE instant ability from talents - Stormstrike. Then they had Earth Shock from baseline. They also had Frost Shock and Flame Shock, but all shocks shared the same cooldown, and only Earth Shock synergized with Stormstrike thanks to dealing Nature damage. So without the Tier set bonus, Enha Shamans would in PvE literally spam only two abilities during the entire fight (The weapon enchantment buffs lasted for 30 minutes and did no damage on cast like today). This allowed them to use Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning during the fight, which was a big boost. Especially since those did Nature damage and Stormstrike increased Nature damage taken by the target.
Water shield is still in the game as a toy you can buy from the class order hall. It's purely cosmetic though, no mana regen. It's nice to see it making a come back in shadowlands.
Back in Mists a buddy of mine used both 2 set bonuses from the shamans T15, and Glad set for " Stormstrike gives you 2 more maelstrom charges" and "20% increased chance to generate maelstrom weapon charges" Would swap to Resto and put Earthliving Weapon on his off-hand, then go back to Enhance and imbue his main hand. This led to all kinds of dumb stuff, like running Throne and Siege as a "healer" in dps spec, and sitting in top 3 for both on meters.
If I'm not wrong, back in WotLK, Tier 10 for Paladins gave you a chance of your Divine Storm CD to be refreshed and do extra damage. It's true it is not a talent or spell, but it's an Azerite Trait now
Can't wait for the redo after 9.3 drops and we'll have a few more tiers of set bonus gear (renown gear, raid gear from 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3, possibly more)
You should give a shout-out to Death Knight's Cold Heart. I know it was legion legendary piece, but you during pre-expansion you could actually have it and the talent at the same time.
In wrath the feral druid set got a huge buff and really should be #1 on this list. Gladiator's Sanctuary boosts speed by 15% AND stacks with feline swiftness, and it works during prowl. So kitty moves at +45% speed And while prowling moves the kitty is moving at 101.5% move speed, (yes FASTER than normal peeps movement), so you can pounce whoever you want. This also works whenever, including out of combat, including just navigating the world, going to bank, ah etc. It's the best set bonus ever. Move speed is amazing, sure it may not allow some absurd dps interactions, but moving faster is moving faster. Also, ferals will just wear pvp set bonus in most day to day activities, only using pve gear while doing pve.
Not a tier set ability, but remember the Mantle of Command legendary shoulder from legion for hunters? It was so good that they added it's effect as baseline for BM hunters, because without it, it felt like a dead focus starving spec.
For rogues, the amount of combo points used on DoTs used to dictate how much damage it would dealt, that was changed recently, Legion iirc, now it only dictates how long the dot stays, but not how much damage each tick deals as it was on the past
I dont remember correctly, but some cataclysm tier set bonus for the elemental shaman was make your lava burst instant cast when you proc your lava burst passive. Before thet, when it proc you yust remuve the cooldown from your lava burst, so you can cast it again. After thet, in mist, it became baisline :)
i seem to remember that the mage T10 4set bonus (mirror images also gives you %dmg for its duration) was later baked into the ability but was also removed again
Another one is the hunter T2.5 5pc bonus. What it did was reduce the cooldown of Rapid Fire by 2 minutes (5 minutes to 3). Then in TBC, MM hunters received Rapid Killing which did the same thing if you had both points, along with a dmg buff from killing a nontrivial enemy.
Not flashy as these but pretty big honorable mention to the +10 max energy from rogues T1 set has been THE set bonus for rogues ever since it was introduced in vanilla. It was a copy over from the Vigor talent but it remained a staple set bonus on rogue PVP gear untill the removal of PVP set bonuses and also had a glyph clone because it was such a popular bonus among the class. You should do a video similar to this for the legiondaries, maybe top 10 bonuses that made a class much more fun or we wish we had as baseline abilities?, some legiondaries turned a class from a snorefest into a rollercoaster.
Warrior Abilities didn’t generate rage until Legion, prior to that all abilities were exclusively spenders with auto attacks and taking damage generating rage. Also shocked to not see Hunter T2 8/8 mentioned, Expose Weakness was a major part of what made hunters so incredibly strong in TBC.
I must say that I’m very surprised not to see the T13 Ret Pally tier bonus on this list which allowed Judgment to generate Holy Power when cast, and which was afterwards baked into the spec once MoP was released. As an aside, I wish that Blizz would bring back the ability for Judgment to grant a short speed buff when cast, which (if I’m not mistaken) was originally a pvp set bonus but was eventually also either a talent or a glyph. I actually preferred that to Divine Steed, personally.
Hey Hiru I've been a fan of yours for s very long time, and I've had a random thought. This video was actually shocking to me I've never known that tier sets helped create abilities for classes. Does it bother you people watch your videos to go to sleep? (I won't lie, I've been doing it for a long time, not to say your videos are boring or anything, just are peaceful and relaxing to listen to. I guess)
2 huge ones you missed, one of those was right in front of you with the water shield thing. 1: Regenerating mana at a reduced rate after casting was a priest tier 2 set bonus. I think the druid one too. People would forgo tier 3 pieces to retain this set bonus. 2: You discussed dreadnaught cheat death, but the real set bonus that became innate in game was the bonus hit for taunts. Taunt used to use spell hit chance and could miss, which was quite an issue when taunt swapping became a thing.
The HFC tier set for arms warrior gave you random chances to reset your mortal strike, and the archimonde trinket gave random resets to colossus smash. This became the basis for arms warriors tactician procs in legion
Along side set bonuses we have "Borrowed Power" bonuses that get baselined or become talents. Artifact weapon abilities, azurite traits, and essenses, all grant abilities and as we've seen in BFA a few Legion ones got a new home, and Shadowlands looks to be giving a new home to some BFA ones. Though I would probably wait on that video until Shadowlands is released.
I feel the fire mage talent pyromaniac and the T8 four set bonus would have fit this list well. Pyromaniac gives you a chance on consuming hot streak to get a new proc and T8 had a chance to not consume your hot steak proc on use.
Welcome to Blizzards Game Design. I mean its not a bad system.. it just feels bad when they Destroy a Spec with it *cough* Ele Shamans in early BFA *cough*
The problem with adding new abilities is that they need to be balanced around other abilities and other classes, and then players have to relearn their rotations, despite still wanting to have new abilities. I just say Blizzard set the ability table once and for all and no longer mess with it. no new abilities or talents or nothing. Because just as you said, there are no truly new abilities anymore, just new ways of getting them.
Unholy DK: tier 20- was remade into the talent Army of the Damned, where casting death coil knocked chunks of time off the cool down of army of the dead
As someone who had mained a HPriest since WoD. I have never used binding heal. Prayer of Mending is just all around better except for that one niche mechanic where the healer and another are the only ones taking damage.
Now I'm just thinking about how much I miss glyphs again. Not only were they a lot of fun to play around with, they made inscription the most fun profession for me.
Video idea - Top 10 interesting things to do from old xpacs. Not talking about raids or anything, rather interesting and unique gameplay that is entertaining if you have never done them before. Like the withered army thing from Legion (i just discovered that one when I went back to Legion content to unlock Nightborne. I never really played Legion content). Also I heard there was a plants vs zombies thing at one point that I missed. It would be cool to see all the potentially fun minigames that I missed that I could go back and do.
I think it was t13 when retri Paladin had a set bonus to allow judgement to build up holy power. From stacking haste and haste to lower the crusader strike cd got to socketing crit or mastery gems too. Such a blessed bonus.
Sir... Predatory swiftness was added in wotlk. Feral swiftness and dragonhide 4 set stack and always have, giving you the same movement speed in cat form as in travelform. You left out the dispell protection effects on unstable affliction and vampiric touch from as early as wotlk, but the silence from unstable affliction has been bugged for a massive amount of time and was never fixed. So both effects only did damage when dispelled. Vampiric would just do it to the target who is dispelled where unstable did it to the dispeller. These effects have changed more mechanically than almost any other ability has from start to current expansions. And then you could pmuch mention every single Mana Regen set effect in the game that was either removed or changed as soon as cataclysm released since they change of how manapools and intellect functioned entirely. Future video idea :G Talents/effects from classic -> tbc -> wotlk talent trees, that were removed entirely going into the reworked talent trees of cata and beyond, that didn't just become a passive for the spec you choose ofc.
Actually Hiru, Predatory Swiftness was called Predatory Strikes in wotlk and was introduced in wrath.. which made each combo point give a 20% chance to give you an instant cast of a nature ability as long as it was below 10 sec cast. look it up ^^ I just had to comment it cuz you said MoP in the video. I double checked it since I used to main a feral druid in wrath. (Also might be late on this comment)
And this reminded me why I moved away from my hunter in cataclysm in favor of my draeni death knight. Draeni have a race talent for healing which came in handy on a dk.
Back in the day of WOTLK i used to just online and afk infront of Bank so people would click and inspect my full hc set. And i remember pvp shoulder is a pain in the *** to get.
Second Death Grip after 3 seconds (a covenant ability in a way atm) and that ranged rogue silence on PVP gloves (now DH have a ranged interrupt) comes to mind
They added a toy in legion that lets resto shamans still have a *cosmetic* water shield. Worth mentioning for anyone who doesn't want to wait until shadowlands to have a pretty glob of water float around them.
You missed one BIIIG one for MMHunter: T18 Battlegear of the Savage Hunt 4 Set Bonus: "The cast time of your Aimed Shot is reduced by 100%" was transformed into the MMHunter talent "Lock and Load".
The change to Focus was so bad in Cata... killed Hunter for me until they fixed it in Dragon Soul. Yeah the DMG was still good but it was no Fun to play.
feline swiftness absolutely stacks with the 4 set bonus which makes it hilarious when a kitteh druid with the bonus is chasing down a flag carrying travel druid without the bonus you are actually moving faster in cat form (145%) than they are in travel form (140%) and you are beating the piss out of em
You forgot the T10 Ret pally set bonus. The 2 pcs set bonus made it so that auto attacks reset Divine Storm CD. Now it is in the Empyrean Power trait, but the proc now is a free and stronger DS proc instead.
Hiru, there was a mistake about druid's Predatory Swiftness. It was added on WotLK, IIRC as a Feral talent, back when both bear and cat form shared the talent tree.
youtube now has a function where you can see the timestamps in the description ON THE RED BAR?? Thats insane! i just noticed it idk how long its been a thing!!!
2:00 Ohboi do I remember shadow priests in the cata prepatch... They could literally kill me with one DoT when I flew over wintergrasp, the paaaaain (SPriests and feral bleed druid). Aaaaaalso shockadins. Damn I miss WoTLK :(

For rogues, the amount of combo points used on DoTs used to dictate how much damage it would dealt, that was changed recently, Legion iirc, now it only dictates how long the dot stays, but not how much damage each tick deals as it was on the past
Any plans for a new villains corner video?
I do remember the hunter switch from mana. I didn't play one though. I'm glad they put the changes in. They were good abilities.
Hiruma. Do you have a Yu-Gi-Oh chanell? Your voice sounds the same than the duel logs
Yes that is I as well
@@hirumaredx i was not sure. Thanks. Your videos helped me a Lot to get better listening in english language. My main language is spanish
I guess)
Surprised you didn't add wod hunter hellfire set bonus instant cast aimed shot was incredible... My goblin became a machine gun death machine
You missed the 4 set bonus from boomy pvp gear in BC, which was the original form of the eclipse system the entire class is based around today
They haven't made many really new abilities they just keep changing how you get them and trading old ones for old ones
Welcome to Blizzards Game Design. I mean its not a bad system.. it just feels bad when they Destroy a Spec with it *cough* Ele Shamans in early BFA *cough*
@@Y0G0FU There have now been more xpacs that don't feel like WoW than do
The problem with adding new abilities is that they need to be balanced around other abilities and other classes, and then players have to relearn their rotations, despite still wanting to have new abilities.
Future video idea :G
Talents/effects from classic -> tbc -> wotlk talent trees, that were removed entirely going into the reworked talent trees of cata and beyond, that didn't just become a passive for the spec you choose ofc.
What about the 5 piece set bonus from the first PVP set from vanilla WoW for paladins that made your eyes glow blue?
And this reminded me why I moved away from my hunter in cataclysm in favor of my draeni death knight. Draeni have a race talent for healing which came in handy on a dk.
U should make a video series for each class going over the origins of their abilities and talents
Touche, I did not know. I subscribed
Back in the day of WOTLK i used to just online and afk infront of Bank so people would click and inspect my full hc set. And i remember pvp shoulder is a pain in the *** to get.
Needed a new papahiru vid today
Second Death Grip after 3 seconds (a covenant ability in a way atm) and that ranged rogue silence on PVP gloves (now DH have a ranged interrupt) comes to mind
Also, I must add, you can buy a toy in Shaman Class Order Hall, which will apply a water shield on you. Only a visual effects, unfortunetly)
I love your Videos so much, pls keep up the good work
How about for a future list, you do the Top 10 Best CC abilities in the game?
They added a toy in legion that lets resto shamans still have a *cosmetic* water shield.
Worth mentioning for anyone who doesn't want to wait until shadowlands to have a pretty glob of water float around them.
You missed one BIIIG one for MMHunter:
T18 Battlegear of the Savage Hunt 4 Set Bonus: "The cast time of your Aimed Shot is reduced by 100%" was transformed into the MMHunter talent "Lock and Load".
The change to Focus was so bad in Cata... killed Hunter for me until they fixed it in Dragon Soul. Yeah the DMG was still good but it was no Fun to play.
Has he done a list on set bonuses yet? I'm not sure if he did or if there just no special ones
4:20 do you say meow instead of now?
You should do best tier sets of all time, as in most op best buffs etc
The feral druid Predatory Strikes acually was a thing in Wotlk too.
You can always tell when hiru is explaining a priest spell/talent ability etc .. always more personal
feline swiftness absolutely stacks with the 4 set bonus
which makes it hilarious when a kitteh druid with the bonus is chasing down a flag carrying travel druid without the bonus
you are actually moving faster in cat form (145%) than they are in travel form (140%) and you are beating the piss out of em
Most overpowered/underpowered tier sets
You used the old shapeshift form models. Ty. They were so much more beautiful than the ones now.
Fuck no.
Oh damn, never been this early. Love your content!
Predatory swiftness was at least in the game since wrath. Instant cast cyclones were broken in wrath and cata.
I love watching these videos and i never played wow but i want to so bad.
It's funny how in game we get bonuses for extra pieces of clothing but in reality we feel like we get a bonus when pieces of clothing go off!
12:40 is one of wows biggest problems now, every class plays technically the same. Classes have lost their uniqueness.
youtube now has a function where you can see the timestamps in the description ON THE RED BAR?? Thats insane! i just noticed it idk how long its been a thing!!!
Correction : predatory swiftness was added in wrath of the lich king. I play on many lich king private servers and feral has that talent.
2:00
Ohboi do I remember shadow priests in the cata prepatch... They could literally kill me with one DoT when I flew over wintergrasp, the paaaaain (SPriests and feral bleed druid).
Aaaaaalso shockadins. Damn I miss WoTLK :(
Just get some resilience bro
Never any holy pally love. Their healing shields came from a set buff way back in the day.
Hey Hiru, I'm part of the 28.8% :D
