  • SOAR RUNNING APPAREL REVIEW. One of the most popular comments we get on the channel is, can I test and review some running apparel from premium running brand, Soar Running. Well, we finally managed to get hold of some! The guys at Soar were kind enough to send out a really good selection of winter running apparel from their latest range and I've been thoroughly testing it out for the last month. I've been super impressed with most of the items but there was one issue I had that I really wasn't expecting. Check out the video to find out what it was.
    Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

    Great review! Over years of running I’ve upgraded my kit and now that I’m fully down the running kit wormhole I’m an advocate of osoar - recently purchased the windbreaker and, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for! Did manage to get a 20% discount tho helped 😂

    It's way too overpriced and pushed by every running TH-camr (not aimed at you!) It's clear to see their profit margins are quite healthy given that they seem to be happy to send heaps of apparel to everyone on the platform! It might be worthwhile for the elites and wealthy, but I've got far cheaper clothes that are still lasting me well after several years.

      In a way you are correct but you do pay for small improvements( diminishing returns ect) but you can pay £270 for a pair of shoes or £90 but are the expensive pair worth three times the amount and three times the performance. No it’s about 5% tops but they still sell. Premium products are always overpriced but it’s down to the individual to choose what they spend their money on and if you want to buy the premium that’s fine as well as looking at cheap alternatives which is also fine. It is the job of the TH-camr to show you the options and you make your own decisions. I have cheap and expensive kit and some is worth it and some not. I bought a Soar all weather jacket for half price and happy with the purchase. Would I pay full price, probably not but I don’t pay full price for anything. So in a nutshell you pay your money and make your choice.

    (Terry Lonergan) As a 2:25 marathon runner at best, I had to smile when I met another runner who said to me, "You would not have had to train so hard back in the day if you had had a SOAR vest and a pair of Nike carbon plated shoes to race in, Terry!" Yes marginal gains are a fator in all sports I guess but as I replied to him....."It's the man in the shoe; not the shoe on the man" No matter what you wear and what gels you take if you don't put the hard miles in you won't get the times you want. He failed to break 3 hours by 5 minutes. Stomach problems! Always good to see Jake Wightman in his £21 Fastrax club vest.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree Terry, it's all about the hard work you put in 👍
      I think today's go faster shoes and modern day kit help but it's definitely only marginal gains. What do you think Terry if you had to runners who but in the same training volume, had the same fitness levels and mindset, but one of them wore kit from the 1970's and the other runner wore modern day apparel and carbon shoes, who'd come out on top then? 🤔

    • @fastrax1949
      @fastrax1949 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Run4Adventure The peak for depth and quality came in the mid '80s I would say. For example 322 broke 60 minutes for 10 miles in the York 10 1983. My 2;25.36 was good enough for only 200th place in London. Now 60th? My company Fastrax was making very lightweight mesh vests and the shoes we wore were near or sub 200 gms. So we DID look for marginal gains. But no gels. I didn't like to take in even water! The shoes were flexible. We wanted to drive off the forefoot. So, so different from the stiff shoes of today and of course very low stack heights. I appreciate the "science" and protection afforded for the faster runners. But wonder how many slower runners have injred with the carbon shoes as they can't get onto the front of the shoe. I can't comment on the training today's sub 3.00 marathon runners do as I'm not on Strava etc. Apparel is defintely bettter however. Though again we did have Goretex suits in the '80s and wicking baselayers etc.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fastrax1949 I totally agree with the fact a lot of runners are getting Injured because -
      1 - they are spending way to much time in a Carbon plated shoe.
      2 - There's a lot of running using in them that maybe don't have the running form to get any benifits from the shoe and it has a negative impact. However, you'll never convince me that running a fast marathon and not taking on board any calories or water is a good thing! Even all the top kenya runners have realised that now, just imagine what time you could have run Terry if you were getting some calories and water in your system 😊

      Absolutely on the nail, Terry. Had lots of Fastrax gear back in the day, really good quality, reasonable price. A £70 vest might be better than a £10 vest, in fact it probably is, but ten times better???? Shame The complete Runner at Nelson had to close!

Also, even though its meant to be designed to be used with a race vest or hydration pack, I did have damage to the material after my first run with a pack! 😔
      Obviously the two tops are quite different, the all weather has much better waterproof properties but the Wooltech top has a hood, so great for cold conditions 👍

  • @peterkisidaj9329

    Hey Loyd, thanks a lot for a nice genuine review of the Soar brand. I've got or invested to some of SOAR garments, e.g. All Weather Jacket, they haven't reiterated for this 2022 Autumn/Winter season, but this jacket like top to be more precise is unique. Not bulky or thick, just thin layer and it's so functional in the worst weather conditions, freezing, wind, very cold, even when I took it when it was 10 Celsius degrees, still not ended with the feeling I was sweat-drenched. The best jacket I've ever had on the runs in the winter. Also, for race days, SOAR Elite Race Vests have basically no competition (maybe Satisfy), feather light, you feel almost nothing on the race. And would like to point that SOAR is very expensive ,but looks worth to invest if somebody an afford at least their race vest and jacket. All Weather jacket is same fabric as Winter Anorak, but without hood and full zip. Don't need hood, as used to always have a cap and in the winter prefer protection against cold and wind here in Slovakia, not against the rain :). Against rain, Their Nano Jacket is great, only one with membrane, but I haven't seen more breathable protection in the rain. I've got also Inov8 Stormshell, it's great, full protection against the pretty heavy rain, but if it's spring up to milder autumn, then I had totally wet arms beneath the sleeves, nothing similar experienced in the SOAR Nano Jacket. so for me 3 best or 4 best SOAR running apparel: All Weather Jacket, Race Vest, Nano Rain Jacket and also Speed shorts, nothing thinner and so functional exists, again amazing on the race day! All the best and keep on the running, though I have a break currently, because of my injury, right hand in the cast. So need to recover to get back to my lovely running!

    Good review, thank you. I have had another look at Soar now that they have released a few more items of women’s running kit (though it does seem to be 80% socks! 😂) and it doesn’t seem to be much more expensive than full price top end stuff from brands like Salomon or Ronhill. The difference being that those brands are also found on sites like Wiggle or SportsShoes so there is always a discount to be had somewhere. Soar still definitely caters more to men than women which is a shame but maybe they will add more items in the future (if so, we want decent side pockets in our shorts please!) and I would invest in something that I know I’d use a lot like a decent waterproof jacket that would pass mandatory kit checks. Might have another look in 6 months time 😊

    Honest opinion is that I wish somebody would do an unbiased review of whether kit like this is actually worth the vastly "overpriced" price compared to the sort of stuff I typically wear which is mostly from brands that also make running shoes. And the tights I do have have been very handy this week :) Your dislike of tights is rather echoed by my dislike of jackets to run in. Feel far more comfortable in a few thin layers and arm warmers especially if not raining.

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry, I thought my review was unbiased Tim. I really enjoyed running in the kit, great fabrics, nice attention to detail and it fitted my body shape really well. I had a issues with the damage on the Wooltech top after one run with a pack so I was pretty disappointed with that and I said so in the review. I'm not sure why you think my review was unbiased? The kit isn't "overpriced" it's expensive, there's a big difference. Obviously Soar just work off margins like any other company in the world, they have to charge the price to make their margin. Nike and adidas are massive global companies with crazy buying power and not particularly good ethics when it comes to there workers, that's how their clothing is cheaper 🤔

    • @TimGrose
      @TimGrose ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Run4Adventure "unbiased" I meant more as to me it came over as just a review of the kit Soar had sent you. When we both review running shoes it would be very rare not to at least compare to competitor products to help the viewer decide if it is for them. Must have been about £2000 worth of kit here and everything is about double what I would want to pay for shorts & tights which goes back to my question of what you get for say a £95 pair of Soar shorts you don't in a £49 pair from say Nike etc etc

But worse is the zip seems faulty, it’s very hard to do up. I have to apply a lot of force to get it to move. It might ease up with use, but for the price it ought to do itself up!

      Sizing is a size up. If you look at the measurements they are correct. I usually wear a small and I am a 38 chest which is a medium in Soar which fits. Most modern sizes have expanded as people are getting bigger but 38in chest and 32in waist should be considered a medium it just is a small in most brands these days.

    I don’t think Soar are that much above what you’d pay for many other outdoor / running manufacturers gear - certainly not to the extent many are suggesting. Yes they’re expensive, but like anything in this world, you get what you pay for. One of the key bits for me (as with any item of gear) is longevity and such the avoidance of a false economy - if you can make functionally great gear that last for many miles of running, it’s worth every penny imo. Love all my soar kit and it’s evident when you wear it an awful lot of thought went into how each item will be used and sometimes it’s those little bits a of attention to detail that take a product from being good, to being great.

    You were right Loyd.... I nodded off and skipped to the end... haha! Way too expensive for the humble self employed, skint artist. Great for the wealthy or just those posers who love a label. I've got gear older than some people who watch this channel, and it's still going strong. Running for me is not a fashion parade. Stick any old Tee-Shirt and bottoms on, trainers (the only item I will spend out on) and off you go. Love the channel though, keep on running...

    I appreciate the apparent high quality of the gear, but I can't see how the incredibly high price point warrants it all. The quality is probably superb, but is it so much better than an alternative from other A-level brands that retail for far less? I'm sure some people will disagree. II invest a lot of money in top-quality shorts myself, but not so much in everything else.
    Other random thoughts: the flapping hood that can't be stowed is nightmarish for me. The shorts look nice, but without the pockets that Gore and Fusion offer... and both Gore, as well as Fusion, are cheaper. It's just too expensive.

    One thing that wasn't touched on was their approach to sustainability. There isn't a runner on here who doesn't have a drawer full of running kit and adds to it every year. with new kit I bought a Soar jacket last year and for me that is the only winter jacket I'll need for a very long time. If it does get damaged/worn, then it can be repaired instead of thrown away. It's the 'less is more' approach, so although expensive initially, I don't think their stuff is expensive over the lifetime of the product.

    I do like to support the British brands but there is a limit. TBH, there is an awful lot of road running stuff that does equally well for ultras. My favourite road running brand is Asics ( ironically, not the shoes). My mother lives close to Street in Somt, so I very often go their outlet shop. I'd say their stuff meets 80% of my trail needs and the other 20% like proper jackets and stuff is dealt with by OMM.
    I do find branding stuff as 'trail/ultra' can be a bit like making a fruit cake for £20 but slap 'wedding' on it and it becomes £100! That being said, if I'm going premium, then this brand is on the radar for sure and a bit of luxury never hurts now and then. When you're as slow as I am, being comfy for longer important. 🤣

I’ve got Kalenji shorts, saysky, Nike aeroswift, and adidas - and none come close. Yeah, they’re expensive. I think the comments about Loyd reviewing it based on it being free are probably a little unfair. I’ve seen him be disappointed with a number of items from manufacturers that have sent him gear to be tested, Salomon shoes definitely come to mind.
    That said, a comparison of what say the shorts offer over another premium range range from a considerably cheaper brand I.e Nike, Asics would be welcomed.
    I’ve skied all my life and I’ve had friends with the top Patagonia ranges and I’ve even tested it. Nice gear but I’ve never found it’s offered enough say over my Columbia or Salomon gear and at 3-4x the cost it’s hard to justify. Soar does seem a lot particularly for some items, I guess if you have deep pockets and wish to spend that you can, I do feel there is a bit of the Yeezy effect here however.

    For the non-professional runner (who's going to get their kit for free anyway) once you get in to this price range there's a fashion/style element to the price. I appreciate the innovative tech but I'm sure Nike, Salomon, Inov8, etc... have similar tech innovations. There are other higher-end brands that have better styling than Soar and once you start thinking about the style you're way past thinking about just a pair of running shorts or a running jacket.
    Are the shorts going to make you run fast? No.
    Are they going to make you run further? No.
    Will you feel more comfortable when running in them? Maybe.

I'm always honest when I review anything and I'm definitely not saying it's good kit just because we got given the apparel by Soar to review, that would be a pointless exercise. I see they are quality made and attention to detail is great but still overpriced at the same time. It would provide me marginal gains, but I can get more substantial gains by investing in my training in other ways.
    I personally buy generic apparel brands from Amazon (some of them are particularly good for 1/10th of the cost) or deeply discounted running apparel from better known sports brands when I find them on clearance. Even with a discount this brand would be out of price my range. It is like Gucci but for sports apparel. Even with those details adding to the cost basis, there is probably very high profit margins built into this brand's products. I am sorry it is really easier to stomach the price, if it is gifted or given part of marketing promotion which SOAR is doing throughout the TH-cam running channels. This is not against you Lloyd in particular.
    So, addressing the title of the video. Great Quality? Probably yes. Overpriced? IMHO, yes!

      I don't think overpriced in the right word to use! It's expensive that's for sure but Soar charge their prices so they can make their margins and keep the business afloat. • @NoxiousNoodles
      @NoxiousNoodles ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Run4Adventure I see that but do not think it is the correct approach when determining whether something is overpriced. I see 'overpriced' as relative to their competition rather than relative to themselves.
      It may well be that Soar need to have such high prices due to a high cost of production due to the low volume but, when you compare their stuff to the competition, the increase in price is not reflected by an equal increase in quality. Therefore it is overpriced. Realistically, they need to make more of the stuff at the same quality and knock the price down accordingly, which is really difficult to do, but a number of their competitors managed.

    2) Not a single dislike of these items, they can’t perfectly execute all of their products right? There are rooms for improvements or design faults even for the very best product.

      As someone who has done a lot of research into working conditions, China and Labour laws don't have a great track record. Major factories have literal suicide prevention nets around building, workers chained to desks, and so on. Not a great look but same goes for many other brands. Instead of painting with broad brushes and assuming the worst in each company, look to see if they have any workers rights third party certifications. For example, B corp status. Arc'teryx is a good example of this. They use manufactures in China but have set up verification systems along the way to ensure their manufactures are up to their private standards.
