Watching Bibleman as even a religious person makes the skin crawl. My mother, who is Catholic made my nephew turn it off because it was teaching him not to debate or ask questions about what he believes. That is a terrible thing to teach kids.

well if it helps to know, VeggieTales had an excuse, at least when it first started. It was actually the first direct-to-video series to be entirely animated in CG, and one of the earliest CG animated series period (coming out in 1993). Big Idea were basically pioneers in that area - not to mention their small budget at the beginning - so you can't really fault them if VeggieTales didn't look like, say, Toy Story. And hey, at least it's animated better than Dorbees or Elf Bowling.
Also re Bibleman: I won't lie, I wouldn't mind a Bibleman episode where Larryboy makes a cameo and uses his plunger ears to beat the shit out of Bibleman

Honestly, I used to like veggietales. It was fun and quirky. I don't think of it nowadays, but back at it's height of popularity, it was a very decent show that didn't shove the bible down your throat like cold medicine.
hell even as I was losing my religion as a mid-teen I helped out with the small town I lived in's children's bible study and each week there was usually a veggie tales movie. the teen ones I would win a 2 liter of pepsi or such for beating the others in trivia(about 7-10 teens, 15-20 kids)

I'm a Christian and I indeed believe that relgious cartoons don't need to be badly animated or shove morals down people's throats. They should have nice and slow-paced animations that actually guide kids though the teaching of the Bible, like Veggie Tales. And I'm proud to say that Bibleman was hilariously cringy.

I personally think Veggie Tales is a religious cartoon done right. Sure it has religous themes (telling stories from the Bible or delivering morals about trusting in God) but it's not oversaturated or forcefull with them. It is relatable, and of course who can forget Silly Songs With Larry?

The animations that says that they are not to question God really gets on my nerves. It's actually okay to do that. After all, a few biblical figures in the Bible have done that, and they're okay. In fact, it allows the mind to expand on the knowledge. I'm not sure if I'm the only Christain who actually sees it that way, but it would be pretty cool if there were more.
And oh my gosh... cussing in a children's animation?! Especially for a religion that has specifically not to have a foul mouth? That's so annoying!
I think they were lazily trying to say "David *fought* Goliath". If that's the case, then that really drives home how crappy the voice acting is in this burning piece of hot garbage.
From my experience, doubt can accompany the faith by questioning blind faith replacing it in faith with reason.

I'm a Christian, and I cannot believe the bullshit that is Bibleman. I was raised in a household that let me learn things my own way and make my own decisions on my beliefs. My parents were Christians, but when I was a teenager I questioned my faith and looked into, researched, and learned countless religions, and even became Atheistic and agnostic for a time. My parents had no problems with it, they let me form my own beliefs. I went back to Christianity for my own reasons, though I don't go to church and primarily only listen to the new testament (and I still take some of that with a grain of salt), I still believe in God and Jesus, but I also believe everyone should be able to believe what they want. I hate Bibleman which says you can't even debate or question your faith and must always believe unquestioningly what the bible and religious authorities say, just as much as I hate atheists who say teaching kids creationism is child abuse and is only going to destroy future generations, like Bill Nye did. Just let everyone believe what they want, as long as they aren't hurting anyone or forcing it upon anyone.

Dr. Decepto A scientist villain with green skin. He only appeared in a flashback in Big Big Book, where he defeated Bibleman, but he (Decepto) was later seen behind bars.
Madam Glitz A self-centred woman in Back to School. She captured Miles Peterson (Bibleman) because she wanted the fame Bibleman had. However, Bibleman tells her that it is the Word of God that everyone desires and needs to hear. She was placed inside a T.V. set by God.
The Fibbler A green-haired evil clown (resembling the Cesar Romero Joker from the Batman) who influenced one of the Church singing group children into lying. After she asks her friends for forgiveness, he and Bibleman fight. The Fibbler was defeated and destroyed by his own sword of darkness.
The Gossip Queen A villainess queen whose character design was later widely criticized[3] for sharing many characteristics with traditional Jewish stereotypes (e.g., possessing dark skin, curly black hair, a large hook-nose, thick lips, and dark-colored beady eyes).[4] She tried to rip the Church singing group apart. She has two henchmen named Loose Lips and Blabbermouth and could fire Beams of Bitterness from her fingers. She was destroyed when she was hit by Bibleman's sword.
Luxor Spawndroth (Brian Lemmons) A villain who takes on different persons after defeat. These incarnations include: The Shadow of Doubt, Master of Misery, Dr. Fear, El Furioso, The Prince of Pride, Himself, and lastly Temptation.
Ludicrous The evil sidekick of Luxor Spawndroth.
L.U.C.I. (The Link to Underhanded Computer Influences) is the evil counterpart to U.N.I.C.E and computer to all the villains starting with Dr. Fear.
Primordius Drool/The Wacky Protestor (Jef Scott) was a goofy, blue-skinned demon scientist who was formerly a green skinned demon with greater powers before he got demoted. His abilities include plasma balls and, as Primordius Drool, lightning. During his final scheme, he created a special portal to another realm to trap Christian students and turn them to atheism. However, he got caught in his own trap and was stuck there forever. He was the first villain fought by the second Bibleman,Josh Carpenter.
Rapscallion P. Sinister was the villain fought by Bibleman in the 2005 live show, hired by the Wacky Protestor to take out the source of Bibleman's power. He spoke with a British accent and, according to him, the "P" in his name stands for polite. He was defeated when placed inside a cage that sucked out his power.
Professor E. Meritus Snortinskoff A mad scientist who's in charge of Snortinskoff Industries and makes kids disrespect their authorities. His henchman is Stench. This mad scientist is played by Steven Sandsford.
2Kul 4Skul (2kool 4skool) A gray-skinned villain who devised a plan to establish a T.V. station with the call letters W.B.I.G. (which stand for What's Bad is Good) to block the gospel from reaching youth. He is played by Jeff Durham.
I.M. Wonderful A vain woman who wears a gold mask and a cape. She was played by two actors, one of whom was Lisa Kent.
The Cheater The Cheater, played by Peter Vann, is a villain who influences kids to cheat. His tools are his "belittle r" and his flying cards.
The Slacker This senior villain, played by Josh Childs, makes kids lazy with his Lasers of Laziness. He carries a staff (laser of laziness) and goons to support him in battle.
Super Pro Gamemaster 2 This villain was a cyborg who could control machines. He appeared in "Lambasting the Legions of Laziness". He is played by Henry Haggard.
Super Pro Gamemaster 3 This robotic leader of the Evildoers Club, played by Eric Pasto-Crosby, was Super Pro Gamemaster 2's successor. He has powers similar to his predecessor and developed the video game Big Bad Bully.
Baron Ulysses Tantamont von Braggart A sheriff-like pig villain with a golden head cap who lives in a castle. His weapons are his electric staff that he uses to battle Bibleman, and his electric chair that he uses to shoot at Bibleman and Cypher.
The Commandant of Confusion A gold skinned heavyweight villain who is very technical and has an evil sidekick named Chaos, who is dressed up in a black and red jumpsuit.
Chaos Man in a black and red suit and mask. Sidekick to many villains, but only seen with The Commandant of Confusion.

It annoys me when people say "I don't believe the Bible, I believe science" as I believe this is a base misunderstanding of what science is - it's simply the study of the natural world, and it does not always contradict the Bible.
I think it was Einstein himself who said that without science, religion is blind, and without religion science has no heart or something like that. They totally can coexist.

Religion should be as flexible, relevant, and ever expanding in information as science. Instead religion has become a safe place for people to go to escape ever changing information and social dynamics, in order to feel connected to something eternal. But it is a connection to something that lasts only as long as people believe it. Religion should be very concerned with the natural world because through the creation is how we learn about the creator.

Veggie Tales is probably the best religious cartoon. The episodes are pretty entertaining for the target audience, the Christian messages aren't too preachy, although it still gets its point across, and the animation looks pretty good for early cgi. It just seems more like something you would put on in the daycare at church than something you would broadcast on tv.

Bibleman is one of the funniest characters to me, because his origin is literally that he had everything he could ever want, but that was not enough for him. So he tried to kill himself outside in the elements, but randomly found a Bible under some grass, and it instantly converted him to Christianity. Yeah. So instead of using his endless amount of money to actually feed and clothe the poor and those in need (which is what the Bible literally says you should do), he spends millions on a Bible-Cave under his house, as well as a Bible-Cycle, an expensive armor of God, and several hidden cameras in public high schools. Yes, he literally spies on kids so that he can help them or something. Bibleman was kind of a creep.
I know this is a 9 month old comment, but...
It kinda makes me think about televangelists, so much money that could be spent on good works like feeding and clothing the poor or helping those suffering through trauma to find psychological help, but nah I think a private jet and a McMansion for me is far more in line with God's plan.....

Adventures in Odyssey (honestly I prefer the radio version to the cartoons but the writing is almost the same), NEST Entertainment animated Bible shorts, The Story Keepers...there are good ones other than VeggieTales, just not _a lot_ of good ones and VeggieTales is still the best.

I still consider "Superbook" and "Veggie Tales" the best religious cartoons. Especially after how "Super Book" tackled the book of Revelation and went as dark as needed without going overboard.

They were the first Christian cartoons that I remember actually thinking were entertaining. But, yeah, totally religious to begin with, but ABC, I think, picked them up for syndication and they sterilized a lot of the Bible scripture preaching out of it.

I agree with you. I'm Christian myself and I think that a balance of good intentions, sincerity, and good artistry is important. I would like to make Christian animations myself but I want to do them correctly and without being preachy or manipulative.
As a fellow Christian, I recommend putting just as much effort into clever writing and charm as you do the morals and Scripture excerpts. A big problem with a lot of the shows on this list is that they put all their effort into simply relaying Scripture. If quoting the Bible is all a show has going for it, then what's the point of watching it over just buying a Bible? Give it some good standalone writing as well, so that even atheists can admire it and possible give faith a chance.

As a fairly devout Christian, I find these cartoons to be laughable (except Veggie-Tales and Davey and Goliath). Forcing people to think one way, is wrong and manipulating children is terrible. Aside from the sleazy side of things and the hypocritical merchandise these cartoons produce, these cartoons are complete jokes.
For what its worth, there are some good Religious cartoons out there. They're rare, but there. The ones that actually tell stories regarding faith or religious elements are sometimes good but the ones that just preach "God is God. Believe or go to hell" are sickening.

As a christian, I think it’s important to question your faith. I did with mine and I was brought closer to God but doing so. It’s important to question any closely-held belief from time to time because you can’t be solid in what you believe unless you ask yourself why you believe it. By teaching kids to never question themselves or their beliefs, you’re actually doing them a disservice to them and you’re probably making them less likely to retain their faith as they grow up and begin to experience the outside world.

I am a Christian, and I myself can say that there comes a time in everyone's life where they need to question what they believe in. If you're absolutely sure of what you believe, good for you! But I've gone through this and pulled through that I believe in God. Not everyone will pull through this, but that's their choice, and there is absolutely no need to bring hatred upon any religion/non religion for it. Choose what you want to believe in, and once you've made that choice, yay! You can stick with that! All I'm saying is that it's okay to question what you have been taught, and don't be scared to try other things. Have an awesome day/evening!

I haven't forced my religion on anybody but I think all these cartoons did shove the Bible down your throat so to speak. I'm glad at least Veggietales and God, the Devil and Bob can handle Christian themes and morals without being extremely preach-y.

Yeah, it's cheesy, but it's just so charming and sincere. The problem with most religious cartoons is that they either get way too ham-fisted or fucking scary (see: Bibleman), or think that their message means they don't have to actually pay attention to good writing.

Because of low budget. As for the case for Vegietales, it was made in the early nineties when CGI was extremely low quality. In an interview the creator said that he struggled to even afford the equipment and t was impossible at the time to animate arms and legs, so he decided to use vegetables

You know what? Religious cartoons might be better if they mentioned the more exciting aspects of the Bible. Come on, give us the epic battle between one man wielding a jawbone and an army of Philistines. Give us the compelling struggle between Cain and Abel. Show us a battle between David and the titan Goliath. The Binding of Isaac made for an awesome video game. It may have been a loose adaptation, but was still encouraging in its Christian themes.
I'm not religious, but I'd love to see a good animation of Cain and Abel.

I am a Christian and I am very devoted to my faith. But these shows sicken me! Debating your faith doesn't make you a villain, if anything it can make your faith stronger. These shows don't want people to ever change and find out what truly believe. People can have any faith they want, but if we insult the people with other beliefs just cause ours are different, then we're no better than Bible Man.

Rewatching some of your older videos and it made me think of an interesting factoid. Apparently, back when Pixar was making Toy Story, they called up the Veggie Tales creators and had them consult. So, even if you don't care for the show, you can respect the impact it had on your childhood, even indirectly.

Superbook does a pretty good job too I think. In addition to the kids seeing stories from the bible, the kids then actually take the lessons from the stories and apply it to their lives.

I really like how you cover the worst parts of religious media, but I do wish that you would do the best list for this. I mean, for every bad, there's a good. These are all pretty terrible, but there should at least be some good ones. These cartoons show the worst of Christian writing because it shoves beliefs down your throat. I'm Christian and I despise these because they don't let people pick what they want to believe. Because somehow questioning your beliefs is the greatest sin of all? I also feel this represents Christians in a bad light as forceful, belief in a god or you are bad kind of people. I believe people can believe in whatever they want. Trust me, I've questioned my belief before. Hoping for the best list.

I LOVED vehgie tales as a kid!
I watched a bit of VeggieTales growing up, and, even though I'm not Christian anymore, I still think it was pretty good. The characters were likable, it had a good sense of humor, the songs were catchy... And from what I saw, it taught the better part of modern Christianity: God loves you; anything is possible with God, so there's no need to fear anything...
My grandmother also had a bunch of animated Bible stories by Nest, and those were good. Even if you're not Christian, you can appreciate the stories in the Bible, especially the Old Testament, like the story of Esther. I'm actually glad I grew up with that stuff, because I became an English major, and all that stuff is important in the Western literary canon. Hell, even if it's not your area of study, there's so much intertexuality in the things we read and watch... Familiarity with the Bible can help you better understand even a lot of the entertainment you consume.
Thank you for not being like most non Christians today and actually noticing the bible has use even if you're not a Christian. Plus, if I'm lucky, you'll want to become a Christian.

I watched an episode or two of veggie tales when I was pretty young. To be honest, I thought it was pretty good then. The episode I watched was the one that talked about that one guy who delivered letters that god wanted him to deliver (then I literally thought god was just a big voicy guy who delivered people mail) letters that preached his word to Salem.

As a Christian myself, teaching kids not to question their faith or ideology is TERRIBLE! Questioning something will eventually to the truth. All that does is lead to blind faith, which is more dangerous than someone who has doubt. Remember Galileo? He questioned and proved that the sun, not the Earth, was the middle of the solar system, but because the corrupt church ministry made the earth centre theory sacred, Galileo was ridiculed and punished for questioning the nature of God's creation. When I feel depressed and full of anxiety, I sometimes question what God has planned for me or the world. It lets me take a step back and see myself before I continue forward. And usually, things will work out overtime. I'm far from a perfect Christian, but at the same time, I don't teach myself not to question the nature of God, or blindly convince myself that I am without flaws. I do like Veggie Tales and the original 321 Penguins for how they are more subdued and not overly preachy like so many other religious cartoons.
Galileo was actually punished for mocking the Pope, not the Sun thing. Considering the Church actually funded a lot of the science going on during the Renaissance, Galileo basically insulted the most powerful man on the planet and got off light.
