EV politicians don't even want to be caught dead driving these damn things. Kinda sets a precedent of what they think of us peasants. It seems those who were fooled at first paid dearly for their error in their ways and now know better. Only the net zero zealots still want a Klausvagen. Never thought an anti car movement (transportation appliance agenda) would become part of the Chicken Little religion, but here we are.

I have a neighbour that has a Nissan Leaf EV. He can't charge it from his place and therefore has to drive for miles into town to find a charger to charge up. Often the chargers are either being used or are out of order. It is unbelievable that people can be so stupid so as to inflict this stress and suffering on themselves. Buying an EV must surely be the best way of proving to the world that you are mentally damaged.

Until that technology improves a ton it's just not going to happen. Frankly I think we need a self powering car type before electric vehicles would be viable. Something like a mini nuclear or fusion reactor you see in sci fi. When I was a young engineering student back 20+ years ago, electric vehicles seemed so exciting. "Look how simple the drivetrain is!" we would say with glee.
We always thought when electric cars would eventually come, that they would be cheaper and simpler than gas cars since they needed much fewer parts, and most of the cars youd see built by the students in the 90s were like this, simple utilitarian things.
Come now, they are as expensive as high performance sports cars and heavier than boats, and they dont really appeal to many more than a few rich liberals who don't really know much about engineering or work on cars.
Electric cars COULD HAVE worked, the industry just went the completely in the wrong direction with them. If they were affordable, modular and maintainable, they would have done well. What we got instead were smartphones on wheels that weighed more than some mobile homes and needed enough power to run an entire street of housing.

If the batteries were a case of "remove some bolts, pull the plug, put a new battery in and that's $2000 for parts and labour please, and yes they'll charge within an hour on a 3-pin plug", then they'd be way more palatable. As it stands now they're still too expensive and too finicky to live with. Don't let the battery charge get above 80% or below 20%! Don't drive it in cold weather! Don't forget to precondition the batteries before charging! Don't have a fender bender! Don't park it too close to the house! Don't try and charge publicly without an app and internet access! Don't forget to set aside nearly an hour if you are publicly charging! Don't forget to own a dwelling with a driveway!

Proper hybrids with a smaller battery to overcome the inadequacies of ice powered vehicles like in urban situations would have been much better but it's the political agenda driving it which ultimately means no hydrocarbon powered vehicles. Who in the world thinks that the grid is going renewable? Our grid's power generation portfolio isn't currently changing - it isn't even properly maintained poles are rotting, trees are falling on them, and wind pushes over poles, sometimes starting fires. I want to go 'green,' but that has to deal with the sewage treatment, the landfill (we make too much compost as far as the atmosphere is concerned), and dealing with the empty aquifer and resulting land subsidence. What happened to urban living and public transportation? Our transportation need is greater than ever, to the point where there isn't enough time in the day to actually make the commute between affordable housing and decent employment.
Since the 1970s, we've entertained this notion that a new ride is an environmental benefit - it isn't, unless it is a pedal bicycle. Do they really think that the airline industry is going to transition to batteries, like a really big long-distance propeller driven drone? Battery electric chainsaws are still too massive to realistically replace gasoline (a fuel that can be synthesized). Who's in the developed world is going to want to actually recycle batteries - absolutely no one. We can't deal with the automotive waste as it is. Everyone still needs crude oil for the asphalt to build and repair roads for the more massive EVs, repair roofs, etc. Plus you have to manufacture pharmaceuticals and plastics. Support your local petrol industry, it is cleaner than mining heavy metals out of ores, and, mining proposals remain rejected by the same folks who demand EVs. These folks won't let them install new transmission lines, there will be too much erosion or something. Petrol in my area is an industry that finances everything (schools, etc.) thru taxes, and civilization doesn't have alternative technologies, unless you think that a cheapish modified sine wave inverter is going to replace the actual people who operate the grid, yeah right? What university has plans to upgrade their parking for charging? It isn't happening because of existing infrastructure, and the need for electrical grounding / earthing, and architectural services are a molasses-slow joke, a viscosity that is not affordable for most people.

      2) If 98% of EV owners are converting from ICE cars as estimated), then sales can go down and their market share would still increase. As the vast majority of the people who have bought one are moving market share to Ev. Simple example. If 100 people own ice cars and last year 10 bought EVs the split is 90/10. If this year only 8 buy EV cars, sales are down but their market share has gone up to 82/18.

you clearly have no idea how market share works. If people are switching to EV from ICE, then ICE market share is going down. How do you et rising demand for ICE? By having dropping demand for EV.
8 of those EV sales in your example are the same people buying another EV. so you're more like 88/12 with dropping EV demand. 10 people buy EVs, then 10 more buy EVs while 4 switch back to ICE.
EVs last about 2-6yrs tops, and most well off people who understand money know that keeping an EV longer than 2yrs costs them dearly in depreciation. And the insurance for EVs is far higher too.

The only thing EV helped me were to recognize which businesses were empty-headed enough to buy into "current-day-thing" by putting charging stations in their parking lot, destroying several parking spaces for everyone else. Of course, just like EVs themselves, they are highly subsidized, so every tax payer has to bear the expenses for the privileged treatment of a few out-of-touch individuals. Keep in mind that the combined taxes on gas/diesel are well over 100% over here. Sales of used EV are increasing in Europe, Australia and USA . The used EV car market was always going to where the major of first time buyers were going to dip their toe. Tyoata still have 2 million new unsold vehicles worldwide

While the market share of fully electric cars fell to 12.5% from 13.8% in May 2023, the share of hybrids rose to 29.9% from 25%.

After 38 years in retail I can assure you that the reason you discount heavily is to clear unwanted stock. Plus you tend not to replace that item that didn’t sell at a reasonable profit.

Really makes you wonder about this "save the environment" business.

I mean I kinda get why they are doing it. It's to protect local businesses. America did this before with Asian cars.
I do agree though that they are just screwing the consumer though

In contrast, France, Europe's second-largest market after Germany, recorded growth of over five percent. In Belgium, the third largest e-car market in Europe, new registrations have increased by around 45 percent.
So your conclusion that "the EV transition has fallen at the first hurdle and probably won't get up again" is uninformed at best and misleading at worst.

The *only* key markets in the EU to record EV sales growth were France & Belgium. Belgium's EV sales growth is an outlier... so let's dig a little deeper. It turns out that the Belgian government is giving 5,000 Euro (!) cash incentives to buyers of EVs! That $8,000 Australian.... which proves that "Freebies" work to drive sales. Freebies are also unsustainable, which is why EV sales are tanking in markets where the incentives are being wound back.

    • @Mr_Yeah
      @Mr_Yeah 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@RodneyW Ah, that explains Belgium's spike up, as the end of EV funding in Germany explains the spike down, making both bad indicators for the future of the EV market.
The rest of Europe's falling sales figures (except France, the second biggest market) may be attributed to the dispute over a possible phase-out of combustion cars in the EU, making potential car buyers hesitant, but I'm not sure.

Btw: insurrance here is not more expensive, depending on the comparible model sometimes even less.
