We have. There will always be two sides to a story. Sometimes nobody’s wrong nobody’s right. It’s based on perception. He thought he was safe going without a rope. The sherpas didn’t like it. They like to be relied on AND do have some responsibility towards their “clients”. And the ice falling was ultimately an accident.
All in all it was their clashing attitude that caused the rift.
Sadly this climber ended up paying the ultimate price.

Long story short it was a shakedown. Everest is a business...the sherpas run their ropes and ladders and make it impossible for you not to use them or interfere with them. They didn't like they were going up without local help and they touched their ropes and they used it as an excuse to attack them... it is what it is. This story has been told a million times and only those with common sense seem to pick up what's not being said out of respect for locals. For whatever reason I dont know why everyone sides with the sherpas. Are there no bad sherpas ?!?! 30-60k American dollars paid to a tour group feeds 20 people for a year in Nepal. Everest is their business. The mountain is not hard to climb. It's more conditioning and people's health at the time of climb.

    • @vivekgupta1139
      @vivekgupta1139 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'll break it down to you.
      a) The Sherpa's told them 3 guys (Ueli and 2 others) to not go ahead of them since they would be install ropes and stairs (The route the sherpas use ) and Ueli and 2 others were using the same way before sherpas even after being told not to. Also since someone is above you while doing it, there is a good chance of an accident to happen since ice falls behind and it is really dangerous cus the climb is almost straight. Also how would they touch the ropes if there were none? Didn't you know the ropes and stairs are being installed every year?? What you think they just did that once and left it for the coming years? Lol
      c) The Sherpa's claimed that even after they warning those guys they climbed and one of the sherpa (Simon) got hit with ice on his face and got bruised.
Also one of the 3 guys (forgot the name) pointed with ice on the ice hammer of one of the sherpas (again forgot the name prolly simon). Last but not least the one of those 3 guys (forgot the name) said "Machikne" and that's a derogatory slang in Nepali (You can even conform one of the Sherpa's asking to confirm that he knows whats "Machikney" and that guy accepting it and getting slapped, check the fights video you'll find it).
And that was the last blow

Please read the Sherpa's side too:
In a meeting at Camp II, we had decided that no one would climb until
we finished our job. We were aware that many climbers would hike up
from Camp II to acclimatize. Fixing ropes is a sensitive and huge task.
So, we strictly alerted everyone not to go high up.
We were a team consisting of belayers and leaders. In our job, if one
of us makes a small mistake, another member can be injured. So, we have
to be extra careful. We were at 22,000 feet at around 8 a.m on April
    27. We saw that three foreign climbers were climbing up. We were all
using the same radio frequency so when we saw them, we asked other
Sherpas to stop them because ice can fall from high up. But they didn’t
stop. Nobody knew who they were. Someone said they were Russians. When
we inquired about them through the radio, we were told that they were
Russians and had a permit to climb Lhotse. Even then, we tried to stop
them, but they didn’t listen and continued to climb using our ropes.
They turned out to be three renowned climbers and guides-Simone Moro, Ueli Steck, and Jonathan Griffith.
They told us: We will not disturb you; we will take
another route. After their assurance, we allowed them to go ahead. By
this time we had reached 23,000 feet. Our goal for the day was to
complete the rope fixing up to Camp III and then go 600 feet farther.
When the Europeans traversed past Mingma Tenzing, our lead fixer, ice
tumbled down and hit one of our crew members, a Sherpa who works for
Adventure Consultants. His face had bruises. This hasn’t been revealed
yet. (Earlier, we lied to people saying that it was from a slip, but in
fact a chunk of ice had struck him.) I don’t know whether they had
dislodged the ice intentionally or whether it was just an accident, but
pieces of ice were dislodged and that was the main issue. Mingma told us
that it was becoming too dangerous to continue. These people climbed up
despite our call not to do so. Mingma said we should descend, so we
    followed his instructions.
This message was also delivered to our coordinator Greg Vernovage
[the leader of the International Mountain Guides Expedition] at Camp II.
Mingma had already anchored the rope and while he was rappelling down,
Simone approached him and began the verbal abuse. “How much money do you
need?” he asked Mingma. As this was going on, Ueli Steck stormed in and
grabbed Mingma’s chest. It was very dangerous to grab someone’s chest
in such a high and precarious place. I was 100 yards below him at the
time. I was leading on the right side while Karma Sarki was at Mingma’s
side. We had already decided to descend because the three were not only
getting in our way but were also picking fights. Simone uttered words
that were abusive. Ueli also pointed his ice axe toward Mingma. I was
scared at the time. We descended wondering why they had defied our
warning and why they were keen on getting into a quarrel.
    We
arrived back at Camp II at around 2 p.m. Everyone was aware of what
happened on the Lhotse Face because they all had tuned in to the same
radio frequency. The overwhelming mood in the camp was that of
    resentment.

Who do these sherpas think they are to give orders to people who are not their clients.
And if ice was dislodged why would it be done on purpose? Just an excuse.
I do understand when sherpas get upset or refuse to work in difficult conditions.
But they are risking themselves for the money their clients pay them. And they need to focus their anger on themselves and their clients.
They have no authority nor they own the mountains to tell non- clients when or where to climb.

@tonymtlwpg i do have a great respect for Sherpa people. However, since everest climbing became a touristic business so non-real climbers can show off in front of friends, this started putting sherpas in real danger.
But this does not give authority to sherpas over real climbers who go for free, know how to move around the mountain on their own, and just share camps with them.
Modern sherpas need to blame themselves and some of their clients for the risks they decide to undertake.
I am sure no real sherpas would have attacked without a reason real mountaineers, who have mutual respect for each other collective they are both elite climbers. Not professional tourists like the ones who crowd on the everest routes.
      R.I.P. Ueli.
      R.I.P Alexei Bolotov.

One has to go according to the team leader other than exceptional. If they can climb the mountain by their own with no assist. They don't have to hire Sherpa climber and make them feel no value of their presence in the middle of mountain trail. The point where there is a risk of death and life, they act like that's a play hill . Climbing by their own is exceptable if they climb by their own with no Sherpas at all. Actually there are other reasons why a permit can be extended....money, politics, the gov't worrying that it make them look bad/petty....so maybe it was a statement to other Europeans/non-Tibetan visitors of Everest. I've looked at many videos and articles about this incident and still don't know what actually happened, AND I know that sherpas are very good, hard-working people, kind too, who make just enough money until the next ascent. Maybe that's part of the problem. They feel they're being taken advantage of and then here comes these "stars of mountain-climbing" who say they don't want to use their ropes, ladders and seem boastful ...but then they DO use those ropes and ladders and it angers the sherpas. I can understand that....and maybe you said something or were disrespectful and they'd had enough of it. I guess we'll never know the real story, but my experience with sherpas is that they are very level-headed, mentally/physically strong people.

Sherpas were employees of a commercial guiding company who are only allowed there because of the commercial permit acquired by their employer.
Ueli had a professional permit and had just as much right to be there.
Lead employee of the commercial guide company's rope laying crew couldn't take having his overnflated ego crushed by the reality being shown to him by Ueli and his group.
      1) The locals have no special right to be there and the westerners had just as much permission to be on the mountain.
      2) The locals have no special authority and are only employees of a commercial guide company, and probably owned by a westerner.
      3) The locals have no magical mystical mountain abilities and the westerners were more knowledgeable, more skilled and more able in the mountains.
      4) To top it off, Ueli and group showed just how dispensible the employees were by easily finishing their work for them after the initial conflict.
The magical mystical mountain men could not take someone telling them they are not that special or better than others and then demonstrating it to them. Don't know if that huge ego was fragile but it was crushed pretty hard.
The rope laying crew was completely in the wrong and are nothing more than employees who cannot be on the mountain without a government permit.
I guess it is more fun to think of the locals as magical mystical mountain men with special powers and a level of spirituality that we cannot comprehend. Maybe you could share with some of us what clothes the emperor is wearing today also.

David F, is a White skinned, bald headed European man. He migrated from l'Alleud, Belgium and now living in North Carolina, USA.
Since he is a proud European citizen, he likes to defend his fellow European mountain climbers and that's what he has been doing since the fight broke out in the high Himalayas between three Alpine climbers and Nepalese Himalayan Sherpas.
All of his comments are biased towards his fellow Europeans even though the eyewitnesses have said that the Europeans caused the huge ice rocks to fall upon the rope fixing Sherpas below, luckily missing those sherpas. May be David F doesn't read news from main stream media like these:

He had so many chances to explain the side of the Sherpas but never took the opportunity to do so. It’s unfortunate because Ueli of all people appreciated the magnanimous Himalayas more than many of us will ever. Why could he not develop a bond with the Sherpas instead of making them angry on their own holy mountain? From what I gather, the fight broke out due to him claiming a sense of ownership he just did not have. Establishing routes without permission, using routes without giving money to the Sherpas who pitched them, walking on parts of the holy mountain without permission from the Sherpa, without prayers. It’s a shame. Maybe this is why Ueli died on Everest of all places. Mountain magic fighting for its people. Rest In Peace.

Reading as many reports and interviews as I can, it wasn't Steck that provoked the argument, it was mostly Simone - he used the phrase motherfucker and slave.

I died climbing it. There is no conservation what so ever of the mountain. When it's eventually closed. The mountains still be there. And the Sherpa people will also remain. More respect needs to the mountains. Money and these kind climbers need to be humbled. I see the were many other sports have gone. Steroids performance enhancements. There climb on the backs corpes of the dead. He was one of the greatest climbers in history. But i would spit in face.
