      Less permanent jobs is the most important on your list imho.
      I’ve heard it described as “an inability to make a 30-year plan”.
      How many 23-year-olds can reasonably say they are in a job that pays well and they can do it for three decades?
      Each child is a bet on the future, and they are a minimum 20-25 years of investment. We just can’t plan that far ahead anymore with off-shoring and heavy competition (ie lots of expensive and long education) for the remaining cushy office jobs.

    I have lost faith in the effectiveness of governments and civil servants, regardless of their political affiliation. My disillusionment began during Tony Blair’s tenure, and I now see little reason to expect meaningful change. Consequently, I’ve chosen a different path from what was once considered the norm. I haven’t pursued marriage, I haven’t invested heavily in a career, or started a family. I don’t vote and contribute minimally to societal structures. In essence, I’ve opted out of the conventional lifestyle that previous generations took for granted, as I feel it is largely a fruitless endeavor. Why bother?

    • @derek4412
      @derek4412 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It’s interesting to see someone not get married and feel like they’ve chosen a “different path”. My wife and I got married in 2019 and we felt like we were *opting in* to an alternative lifestyle.
      Times do change, but it frightens me when I think marriage used to be the norm and now it’s becoming only a cultural memory for a significant portion of Millennials and Gen Z.
      I’m not sure how the UK is, but in the US parents used to pay for the wedding but now parents typically don’t. Support for marriage among the older generations is falling too.
      Birth rates will probably continue to crash at a quicker pace from here.

      @@derek4412 Good afternoon,
      Support for wedding costs and buying a first home often depends on the financial means of one’s family, a situation that has always been true. In previous generations, most people could save for a deposit relatively easily, which made homeownership an achievable goal for many. Buying your own home was seen as a significant accomplishment and a source of pride. However, with rising property prices, this is now out of reach for much of the population.
      The UK’s birth rate currently stands at 1.44, below the 2.1 needed for population replacement. Homeownership has declined to 53%, while marriage rates are at 49.4% and divorce rates at 42.2%. Additionally, 37.9% of adults have never been married or in a civil partnership, a notable increase from 26.3% in 1991.

      I've seen many guys marriages fall apart just because the woman was no longer happy, ripping a family apart and financially ruining the man

    The guy on the right is a fantasist. Most younger people simply can't afford children in the modern world.

    I recently read about a couple who earned £75000 claiming they can't afford to have children, yet pakistanis and africans are able to have 6 or 7 offspring per couple and all they receive are benefits. How can this be?
