I am venezolan and i have 2 year living in trinidad. I not like so much peppar but i love trini food. I learn make roti and i make a real nice roti now i go for learn make pelau. Real nice food
Spoons are for soup. Eating regular foods with a spoon is so odd to me😳 I went to a wedding in Trinidad 10 years ago & they gave me a spoon, OMG I was soooo lost😰, where is the knife & fork??
Great video Renee. I'm a Venezuelan with Trini roots & Chicken Pelau is one of my favs. Finally, someone who doesn't add pumpkin or carrots. Thank you!
Pumpkin and carrots are a standard ingredient of the recipe. Leave it out if you don't like it but other people do! Plus its good for you - lots of - beta carotene.
I’m Dominican as well, my husband is from Trinidad and so I have been looking to cook dishes from his country as well. He has taken me to visit Trinidad a couple of times and the food is amazing. I’m glad I found this channel 😃
I'm a Yankee Trini but grew up eating all the things you have recipes for. Your channel is the best way to get a recipe base when I can't reach My Nana lol Please keep it up!!!
Yahkee is the black American version of pronouncing "Yan-gey" native American; version of "Juan-guy " which is a "Frenchman", just as "John-doe" is an Englishman. "Juanguy pepper" is a quebecois and is translated as "a hothead Frenchman" from Quebec.
I lived for 10 years in the beautyfull island of Saint Vincent and the grenadines, iam from Uruguay.... Today iam going to make your recipe of Chicken Pelau... lets see how it comes!! Thanks a lot for your special Recipe
Nice one, Renée. I generally use pumpkin and carrots in mine. I also like how you explained why it's better to use a wooden spoon when browning the sugar. 👍🏽😁
@@shonicareyes9845 because pumpkin, carrots, pimento, and corn are easily cooked its better to add these ingredients 15- 20 mins before finished pelau. Don't want ingredients to completely dissolve.
Looks delicious! Recipe looks easy-to-follow. I’m half Trinidadian & this was definitely a staple in our home growing up 🇹🇹🇹🇹 The cucumber on the side is a nice touch,I like cucumber on the side when I eat a lot of savory dishes ; it’s my favorite vegetable 😋😉
Like the simple steps you took to make this pelau very flavoring without adding too much ingredients. Thanks and stay safe. I will try cause I love Pelau
Somehow I lost you on my facebook, but I'm so happy to find you on TH-cam. Your accent makes me feel at home.... love that real Trini accent! Please keep these vids coming!!
Lady...i simply love the way you do your thing! Especially with how you keep the traditional methods of preparation! Would sooo love to meet you some day. Well done. You have managed to do what sooo many can't do. I am pleased...
I really enjoy this episode Very Authentic, not just the food but by simply being Yourself, you became someone I could identify with as a child growing up in Trinidad 🇹🇹 the way you presented this segment brought me back even though I haven’t been home in a very time. Excellent Job 🌟⭐️🌟⭐️⭐️
I enjoyed watching your video and must say that I make pelau using the same ingredients only. In my opinion, adding carrots and pumpkin alter the authentic flavour. I love pepper. It is on my menu for tomorrow.
I am doing pelau tomorrow so i came on to see your method .Thanks for explaining why the rice is put in at that stage to take up the flavour .Other videos never explained .So i now know .Well done !!
Never had it, but the skill you had making it was wonderful! Subbing with joy. Great presentation and recipe, thank you so much for sharing your talent and tutorials.
In Guyana we call that dish...Cook-up....an it is very delicious an also we have different versions of it...I must say that looks delicious...instead of using sugar to brown the chicken we have something call casareep...that we use.
You made me hungry from Toronto I am borned Guyanese but I have lots of Trini family we do have pigeon peas, coconut milk ,salted margarine.i will give i If a try. YOU are a pretty cook.bye from toronto.
That looks so good. Never knew about the foil trick, always wondered how others got it less "wet" so I will try it next time. I must say that I brown my sugar without oil in all my stews and it comes out really really well. It's a great way to avoid the extra fat since most meats and coconut milk will already have a bit of oil. Thank you so much for sharing all your great recipes! 😊💛
I like mine grainy and the only veg i add is carrot besides onion and garlic new 2 your channel and im trying every recipe so happy i can enjoy these dishes me grandmother used to cook yummy thanks
Some people love to put a couple Bay leaves and whole cloves in the pot. Not a fan of whole cloves though so I use a touch of ground clove. Very simple recipe to follow 👏🏾👏🏾
Hi Renee, I've only recently found your shows on TH-cam and I am very impressed. I know how to do most of what I've seen you cook already but with some personal variations as expected. I normally put pigtail, smoked bones, chicken and pork for a juicier more fragrant pelau... lots of green seasoning and pimentos. I usually eat immediately as I turn off the pot with a generous dollop of pepper sauce on the pelau. Thank you for your recipe! Looking forward to viewing more of your work!
Renee, I don't use oil to make my browning, or caramel at all. My daughter is afraid of making it, so I usually do it for her in advance, and pour it into a bottle; she takes it home, and whenever she's making cake, or pelau, or anything that needs browning, it comes in handy! My Chicken pelau is similar to yours, but I add one, 6-star Anise, some diced carrots, and green and red bell peppers; it doesn't only taste nice, but also looks nice!
I like the simplicity of the Pelau I plan to make it. I may use lentils instead of pigeon peas because my family all love lentils. Adding the coconut milk is awesome. Can't imagine the aroma
I love my pelau sappy!!! A bit more saucy than what you had there with pumpkin and carrots. A good pelau is where it is at with lots of coleslaw and or zaboca on the side, a true trini dish!
Tori Wayne It’s really easy but not everyone can do it well which I find interesting about this dish. I had to try a 3 times before I perfected it and it’s still not better than my trini mama’s pelau🤣
This is a little bit different from the recipe I found in the cookbook. It's a little bit different - no worcestershire sauce and/or soy sauce - which is great. Also, adding the foil to seal in the flavour is a great touch.
I'm from Jamaica and it's the first time I'm hearing of this dish and I really want to try it. What I want to be clear on though is the chicken... it seems to be pre-seasoned. What is it seasoned with?
You are an amazing chef I watched all your recipes and love the fact that you dish out your food so we see what it looks like and love that you taste your food also please do more recipes love watching your videos, youre an amazing chef can you do some vegetarian recipes thank you
I noticed that the chicken was seasoned but you didn’t say with what I assume it was green seasoning. Being half Bajan and Jamaican I’ve never had pelua rice like this only biryani which seems similar, I’ll definitely be trying this recipe because the process starts very much like brown stew chicken which I love and I also love the one pot cooking ❤️❤️
It is the national dish of Trinidad 👋 It’s not an argument period! Doubles nor Roti cannot be a dish, it’s considered snacks not a staple diet. I love my roti YES “ but it could never compare.
I'm Venezuelan and I love Trini food. Pelau is one of the greatest dishes in Trinidad. I love chicken and pork pelau, sadly I can't eat peppers
It really is a great dish. Thanks for watching and for the support!
I’m a Trini in London, never had such a simple pelau, mum always put lots of veggies in hers. Looking forward to trying your version, thank you❤ 🇹🇹

I shared my Pelau with a Dominicana friend. She loved it and said it was similar to their food also. I can't remember the name of their dish though.

All great additions!
Hi, Im interested in your version. Do u know at what points in the directions ur parents enters those additions?
...YOU CAN ADD WHATEVER YOU LIKE TO A RECIPE - THAT'S WHAT MAKE'S IT YOURS - IT'S DONE ALL OF THE TIME...
@@shonicareyes9845 because pumpkin, carrots, pimento, and corn are easily cooked its better to add these ingredients 15- 20 mins before finished pelau. Don't want ingredients to completely dissolve.
This is very similar to what my great grand used to make in South Carolina, USA. They call it a perlo, very similar to the word pelau.
Oh my goodness I love her! I would love to have her for a daughter in law, she is such a delight! Keep up the awesome work princess!
You are a savior for single Trini men. God bless.
You get through girl, I'm Grenadian and I just love the way the trini make their Palau.

Great video Renee. Thanks for taking the time to explain how to "brown" the sugar and using a wooden spoon (I know for next time). 👍🏾
Glad I can help. Always a pleasure. Thanks for the love

Yes the wooden spoon is so much better was tired of metal spoon taking all the sugar

You learn something new every day. Thanks for the tips by using a wooden spoon and covering with foil. I'll try that the next time. Thanks again.

You're a pleasure to listen to and watch
pelau is so basic but i never tried my hand at it! thanks for this, i feel i could try it now.
Tori Wayne It’s really easy but not everyone can do it well which I find interesting about this dish. I had to try a 3 times before I perfected it and it’s still not better than my trini mama’s pelau🤣
I've wanted to make Pelau for such a long time, and after watching your video I think I can do it. 👍🌷
You forget to wash the rice.

You are a chef 😊 that's awesome
That looks amazing!! What did you season your chicken with? I would love to give this a try! And thanks for sharing 😊
Same here. Would love to give it a go, but the chicken seems marinated, with no indication of the marinade.
Yep love the palue simple.
Great video! I'm a follower now!
Your pelau likes delicious, I will be cooking me some tomorrow.
Looks tasty and reminds me of arroz con gandules/pollo from PR. Did you marinate the chicken? If you did what were the ingredients.
