  • The day has finally come... If you live in an area (Currently Canada) where your Element is affected with the Honda RECALL for the rear trailing arm corrosion then this video is for you. A lot of people including myself were worried for this since Honda could possibly take away your Element if your rust was bad. Hopefully this video gives you a better idea of what this is and what to expect if you are the ones affected. All the best!

Dude, this is a nice video to help get the word out about the recall. Honda (and Honda mechanics everywhere) knows the Element had some definite rust issues and was prone to extreme frame and suspension parts rust. What I think you fail to realize here is just how amazing it was that they did this recall for vehicles that are 17-18 years old. That's going above and beyond the call of duty IMO. Honda has done a lot of crappy things over the years not recalling what they should have (mostly transmission related things come to mind) in a timely fashion or at all but this was truly a nice thing to do, as long as they weren't being forced by some government agency or something, which wouldn't surprise me.
I once owned a 1990 Geo Metro convertible with frame rust/rot and didn't truly find out the extent of how dangerous the car was to drive until after it was 25 years old and the clutch went out. There were no recalls for that issue on those models. Most manufacturers aren't going to do something like this on a vehicle this old. Kudos to Honda for this.

Thanks for posting. I got a letter from Transport Canada last week but I knew about this ahead of time, indirectly through discussions with the local Honda stealership. They perform a "test" of sorts to confirm that the unibody has not already been compromised by corrosion (see your images in your video 2:02). If this happened, Honda will “buy back” your car. It is highly unlikely that Honda will “keep” your car hostage if it fails - I recall a news article from a few years ago where an owner of a CR-V had her car detained at the stealership. This was a misunderstanding of the protocols and I expect that the stealerships know better now. Knowing about the corrosion in that area, last summer, I rehabilitated the unibody myself in the trailing arm mounting area: wire-brushed off the rust and treated it with RustKiller primer followed by a rust paint top coat then touch up with Krown oil spraying. With the recall notice, I then removed all four trailing arm mounting bolts, cleaned them up and reinstalled with anti-sieze then torqued to factory spec. I have not had the warranty work done yet but I totally appreciate your stills of the installed bracing so now I know.

Glad you liked the comment and I just watched your March 3 update. Question for you - 0:41 I see some rippling/waves in the body from left to right below the window (other than the minor dent). Mine has the same rippling/waves appearance and I have only seen that in one other Element but it is not common. I have the original paint so not collision damage that I am aware of. Did some of these Elements come from the factory with that kind of metal defect? Thanks.

I brought my 2006 awd Element with 373000 km in for the inspection last Friday. It Failed. The place where the bolt mounts was solid. I inspected it with my mechanic. They said that when they tried to remove the bolt it stripped. They showed me pictures from inside the area in frame around there and there was corrosion and missing metal. They've failed at least 3 other elements including one with just over 150000 km.
If you're going to take yours in, do as someone mentioned and carefully remove and reinsert the bolts so they aren't seized when you take it to the dealership. Might be a good idea to get a mechanic to put a scope up in there to see what's going on. If you've got missing metal, not sure what you could do to stop it from getting to the point of failure. But jist letting people know tjat just looking at it from the outside is not really any indication of if it will fail.

Mine was rusted badly same spot, 03 E Ex. Was jacking up the car near the rear control arm and the jack pushed right through the rusted area you are showing here. Took it to a shop and they had to cut out the rusted spot and weld new steel in place with reinforcement, they also painted the area to protect from more rust. I’m in US so no recall here. I contacted Honda and they basically told me to go to hell.

This is a major problem with this vehicle and it seems to be a hit or miss based on assembly line and not on ownership. I have two elements. One is pretty much rust free and one can be taken to the Auto recycler in about 100 pails of rusted dust. Both rear suspension lower control arms fell off the vehicle at highway speeds simultaneously. There is nothing left to weld too. This is a major manufacturing defect that Honda must own up to. The Canadian government has already forced them to buy back vehicles. Let's see what our government does

I wonder if there is any compensation to Element owners who are told they can't drive it anymore.
Sounds like I was lucky with my Element, I traded my 2004 because 13 years of salty PEI winters definitely took its toll. I replaced the Element with a 2017 Tacoma 6 speed MT. My first brand new vehicle. In January 2020 Toyota issued a service advisory that certain 2015-2017 Tacoma's were rusting excessively and they needed to treat my frame with corrosion resistant compound. One rust issue to another. I knew about Toyota's previous generation frame rust issue but figured they would have considered that in the 3rd gen. Honda will take your Element away from you? There are no laws in Canada to prevent private property to be taken away from you?

I thought both Canadian-sold Elements and American-sold ones were both made the same at the plant in East Liberty OH but for Québec the User Interface is in French. Do they make Canadian Elements different? Also, I see airbag recalls on every car i've ever looked at recalls for, I thought it's just normal for things (like dashboard plastic) to go flying when the airbag blows up and things just break when you crash so I never really took those seriously. Also is the recall for all years of the Element or just the older ones?

All cars made for the Canadian market have to meet Canadian regulations - beside having a metric instrument cluster, there are no English words - they are all icons in Canada. This way one gauge cluster works for all of Canada. I think one example I've noticed is the parking brake. I've seen USA with the word PARK, in Canadian cars, it's a weird icon. There are others, but I can't remember the last time I saw a USA cluster :)
Also - we have daytime running lights in Canada, they've been mandatory for cars built 1989 and up, so there are subtle design differences for that reason, too.

The current Element recall are for 2003 - 2010. The airbag recall was for the inflator where that can send shrapnel if inflated. That airbag company is a supplier for many Honda models and for other car manufacturers as well.

@@spinphoto I saw a video of someone changing light bulbs in a Canadian Honda Elements cluster and from what I could see it didn't look too much different than my us one other than the kilometer per hour numbers swapped places with the miles per hour numbers. The element in the video had to eat be a 2006 or earlier I know they change the cluster after that year.

There are many Americans calling for the recall in the USA, but for whatever reason it hasn't been ordered there yet. Transport Canada is taking it more seriously it seems... but they are definitely breaking in the USA. It is all models years except 2011.

HELP!!! I have a 2003 Honda Element EX with this Exact problem and I was told by a few mechanics it can't be fixed. I was going to sell it because I can't get it fixed or drive it anymore.., but then I ran across this video and am hoping I do have an option so that I can keep it. There's nothing else wrong with it other than that horrible rust on the driver back underside that holds the rear wheel in place. I live in Ohio, if I call Honda are they going to fix this for me?? So I can keep my Honda..?.. And if they can't fix it, what am I to expect from Honda dealership??? My Element is in great working order otherwise, and great looking still too.., I bought it used in 2018 for $4000 at a private dealership. By 2019 this rust issue has taken over and I've just been sitting on it ever since, not knowing what to do.., just been very upset over it..., Any advice is greatly needed, I want to keep my Element. Thanks!

@@jasonoare2871 I still have it stored on my car trailer. I haven't done anything with it, thinking about selling it and cutting my losses. I've been waiting to receive a recall notice here in the states like they did in Canada, but it has not happened and I don't think it's going to. I don't think mine is fixable, but I would have liked to have gotten a buyback at the least. I don't know what I'm going to do with it. This really sucks. I purposely wanted my 2003 Honda Element, I love these SUVs. This is such a disappointment to lose my car so quickly at no fault of my own. Thanks for inquiring, I appreciate it 😇

I will keep you posted, I posted a message in a Element page and asked everyone to contact Honda especially if they live in the northern part of the u.s. where they see salt on the roads. Also to contact the NHTSA because the more people that complain about the recall not being here in the u.s. as it is in Canada the better.

    • @jasonoare2871

Diane, have you called any of the numbers I gave you?? I got a call back today from the local Honda dealers service manager. I called them Monday or Tuesday and left a message. Ironically the day I called he had a customer bring in a CRV with the same problem. Honda America had the owner bring it in. Service manager said they know about the issues they are waiting for the recall before they can do anything unless honda sends you to them on their own. He told me to call Honda America which I had already done. I called them back to follow up on my complaint and told them about what my local dealer told me. I was told I will be getting a call next week from someone from Honda on what to do. This was my daily driver so I'm making them understand that especially when this could have been prevented of I got the recall back in January 2021.....I also followed up with the NHTSA they posted my complaint on their site and are investigating and asking others with same issues to report them.......if you're sitting and waiting for a recall, you're gonna sit and wait.
I'd advise you to make a detailed complaint with the NHTSA.....also call and make a detailed complaint with Honda America and you should get the ball rolling and I'd say by the end of November you should have it fixed or bought back.
Soon as they deal with my problem I have no reason to keep calling them. So you could wait another year for a recall who knows. So get on it!! Lol
