  • CineMovie caught up with THE ORVILLE creator and star Seth MacFarlane and his co-star Adrianne Palicki at this year's Comic Con in San Diego to talk about why THE ORVILLE has more in common with 1930s sci-fi rather than STAR TREK or STAR WARS.

      Completely agree. TNG was completley amazing. We really needed something to occupy that empty space. Nothing until the Orville arrived. And no, for people who says "subjective" opinion, it isnt, really. TNG was the sci fic show with more nominations in the story of tv. So, "subjective"? well, not really. lol. Also, tng was amazing for many reasons. Many more reasons than ds9, voyager or whatever show.

      Absolutely, I am so glad it is not just a full on comedy but more an homage to 90s Trek with some comedy. And the comedy mostly comes from people just being people. My favorite actual joke thus far was when Kelly says "I may be talking out of my ass here" and Isaac retorts "Then please enunciate." That is so unexpected and legitimately funny.

      Discovery is awesome as the Next Gen formula just doesn't work in 2017. That's why the Orville is a comedy - that's the only way you get get the slightly cheesy old style to work. Anyway, Discovery has been renewed which is good news for the more open minded, less nostalgic Trek fans.

    • @jonw7937
      @jonw7937 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The Orville is not a comedy, it is Next Generation with some MacFarlane jokes thrown in here and there. Which is perfect, because for as much as I loved Next Gen, there were some pretty dry scenes.... and MacFarlane's jokes patches that awkwardness with a little bit of his humor. That's why it's so successful and well liked among real trek fans that appreciate what it was. Which proves your ridiculous notion of Next Gen formula not working in 2017 wrong.
      Discovery is like if the creators of Mortal Kombat decided to make another video game. Except this time it's a tower defense game instead of a fighting game. But then expects everyone to still like it even though it is completely different from it's original form just because it's a "Mortal Kombat" game... even though it really isn't.
      The only thing Discovery has in common with Star Trek is the name. You can't completely bastardize something and then expect fans of the original content to actually like it. The characters are terrible, there is rampant insubordination among officers and crew alike, there seems to be zero professionalism at times, and the only redeemable character was killed off in the second episode...

    • @jonw7937
      @jonw7937 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Oh, and it has nothing to do with open-mindedness. It is completely changed, and they are trying to retcon half of the material. That's why 95% of Trek fans don't like the show man. And anyone who actually claims to be a trek fan and watches this garbage has never actually watched the shows.

    • @Tokiofritz

      Like Seth said, inspired by much of the early Sci-Fi. Even though many of the aesthetics are clearly Star Trek inspired, many other elements are clearly drawn from other classics such as Lost in Space, Buck Rogers, BattleStar Galactica, and even classic Dr. Who. Sometimes there are clear nods, while other times just elements of characters, stories, or even backdrops that have that eerie familiarity. Not that I have a problem with that at all. MacFarlane is doing nostalgia right; remind us of the wonders of the past, but press forward with a unique twist into the future!

    Love The Orville. Such a great show in that it is so entertaining and delightful and still manages to give some thought provoking content with regards to present day sophisticated social issues.

    Bortus and Klyden are probably the best characters in the show right now. They really keep the show feeling high caliber. Just like the doctor and her relationship the robot before they got together.

    I wonder if Gene Roddenberry would consider The Orville as a better spiritual successor to Star Trek than VOY, DS9, ENT, DIS, PIC, SNW? 🤔
    Nonetheless, Seth MacFarlane is extremely impressive. I literally started watching this a couple of weeks ago because I thought it was going to be a cheesy lame piece of crap like the live action stuff from Trey Parker & Matt Stone 🤣. But damn, MacFarlane is a descent actor and a great screenwriter. His storylines are great in Sci-Fi lore. I'm impressed.

    In the STAR TREK shows, the protagonists are these highly advanced, super-well-educated, magnificently ethical people. On the other hand, on THE ORVILLE, the people are basically...us.

    It's just Star Trek Next Generation. Completely un-original full copy. Nothing special. It only seems good, by comparison to all the sci-fi trash that's been on TV and the big screen in the past decade.

    And finally we have Strange New Worlds, which is fantastic. And I'm still loyal to the Orville but we have really had some hit and miss episodes in season 3 -- and, spoiler alert, the season 3 finale of Orville was as bad as the worst episode of Voyager, and that is saying quite a bit.

    Let me give you a clue about women. We can be vicious, spiteful and vindictive. But there is a reason for that. Everything comes back to offspring. Even for those of us who can't have them, the genetic coding is still there. To care for and protect our children, we must be willing to do absolutely *anything* no matter how barbaric or savage it may seem. Even love of mate; "I can't be awake 24 hours a day so who better to look after my kids than the one who helped make them?"
    Even most women don't understand this consciously. But the instinct is there anyway. And this nonsense about preventing females from participating in ground combat is just that: nonsense. To protect her kids, mate and home, she will do things dark and terrible. Things that would make most men lose their lunch. Or maybe it's the Geneva Convention about not torturing the enemy. Because a woman would have no qualms about torture if that's what she feels is needed to get the job done.

      I understand what you are saying, but Males also have their own genetic coding: We VALUE women and children so much. Men know the horrors of war and we understand that women are so precious and so valuable - that we consider it a total loss if it ever gets to the point where women and children are part of the front line. Now, there are of course a lot of women who are exceptionally good at combat and kudos to them. But in general, women are and should be treated like royalty, pampered and cared for - its simply in the Male's genetic code to look after women and treat them as the higher life form, we adore and worship women deep down in our cores. Men do not do this because we think less of women, we do this because we KNOW HOW VALUABLE WOMEN REALLY ARE. Men are basically designed to protect his mate and children. Real men know this. It is not because women are weak, its because they are precious and only men should have to face the horrors of war, not women and children otherwise - what would we be fighting for?

    I started to watch this series last week on hulu. I started to watch it and said this is so simplistic and the lessons are so on the nose. But I like the comedy and keep watching. I'm starting season two and now it hit me. I haven't watch anything hopeful in so long that I confuse hopeful for simplistic. I'm sort of sad how much of a cynic I have become.

    What a stupid interview question. Most of the "great" female characters in cinema have been written by men. Seth is just great at what he does. He's a great writer. If he was a crappy writer then he'd write crappy female characters. Ugh.
