I love cheap guitars. I can be a kid with them, and as a hobbyist that’s the feeling I want. Let the stress fall away and feel like a kid for a few minutes
Bounty Music! I used to shop there regularly when I lived in Maui. Great store, especially considering the location. Thanks for supporting Maui, they need the support now more than ever.
Thanks Phil for all you do. I ever watch the livestream, I watch it afterwards using the time stamps to here about a certain subject. I've been watching you since 2018 or 2019 both the Friday chats & other videos. I've learned a lot & having budget guitars I've bought guitar tools to fix issues when they occur & with the WIDE temperature range in Canada they occur pretty often. I'll continue to watch, just wanted to say thank you.
THANKS, PHIL, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! ALL OF THIS GEAR-TALK IS WHAT MANY LONELY, ISOLATED GUITARISTS NEED, TO STAY "CONNECTED" TO THE COMMUNITY!!!!!!!!!
30:42 I struggled with setups from several guys in my area on my Electric axes. I finally had somebody set it up for me the way I like and I asked if I could write down the neck relief and action on each E string. Ever since then I am capable of using feeler gauges and measuring a bridge. After that, anything else goes wrong I send it out. Just a heads up I play Gypsy/Django guitars and they have a a lot of relief and what is considered hight action so I wasn't looking for a low setting.
I know what you mean about what you want. You want more relief so the notes/chors don't get choked out. A gypsy style of guitar requires higher action. It's about each note having a pronounced voice when picked individually. A lot of low setups are good for speed and distorted chords, but for them to ring out, you do want more relief than most like.
Wow, I got a Toyota truck ad right after Phil finished saying he'd be interested in an inexpensive Toyota truck haha. And I never get Toyota ads. Car ads sure, but not Toyota. Someone's listening haha
I was in the U.S. Army for 4 years during Viet Nam. Phillip served too..... at a later time. Veteran' s Day seems to be less important than Columbus Day. To all that served....... Thank you!
@detroitfunk313 it's important to to millions of people! It marks the beginning of modern civilization to the America's! And the founding of the greatest Country in world history! The United States!! 🇺🇲
Phil thanks mate for acoustic question. Yep I have a Cole Clark from original factory before burnt down. Love it plays great CCR and great with another acoustic around a friend’s family fire / Bbq. But keep the hard case close. Little bees wax polished into back neck. Make it beautiful play feel. My old school rock and blues. I’ve played the Maton messiah which as slash in add. Seen him play some acoustic in interview in Australia no guitar with him, he was given Maton messiah to play. He even stopped looking it over. Said on air wow I really like the tone of this guitar never played brand before. But think I’ll be speaking to someone about getting one for myself. Even with the ebony fretboard. He was really impressed. Not found Taylor only small one to try and Martin. Yet picking tone and feel to fit blues and old school rock. 52 and Australian army veterans pensioner. Similar music taste with you. Stay strong to yourself and family. 🫡🪖🇦🇺
Your comment about learning the Bossa Nova on the bass was important. I have read many times about “training to failure”. When making a mistake over and over while trying to learn something, you are in danger of programming your brain to anticipate and then execute the mistake permanently. The “rule”’is to attempt it 3 times, and if you make the mistake all 3 times, move on to something else. Your brain will not imprint the mistake this way. The next day, revisit the section that is giving you trouble, making sure to follow the 3x rule. Eventually (hopefully) you’ll learn the section correctly.
Marshall is legendary, I to will always have a Marshall. Magnatone is another amp that has legendary bones though. Slash is what will push them upwards and along with Billy Gibbons they have reached notoriety beyond probably their own expectations. Awesome show Phill…
Kiesel is in the 3rd generation and they are doing great. I think my next guitar will be a Kiesel. I loved the video you did with them on the plant visit.
Great show Phil. Totally agree on the tube issues it really makes me want to go digital. Hello Fender Princeton Tone Master 😅 Perhaps soon Tubes are just so expensive given world events and never mind the service involved IF you’re not confident in replacing parts yourself. Furthermore the scarcity of quality tubes vs duds
You are right about some cheap guitars slip through as very good. I was at a store that was having a sale on Takamine Acoustics. I was able to play four that were all the same entry level model. Three of them were ok for the price point. One of them made me regret what I paid for my Taylor 310 and I love that guitar. That low cost Takamine was excellent in every way. We still need real shops where you can really choose your guitar in person.
I have a guitar with the fret problem. Filing did little to help. The gap was too small for me to see but I could feel it. In the end I used a speck of Suoerglue to fill the gap. It might not be perfect for everyone but it wouldn't be any better for me if fixed properly.
I bought the spark go immediately after watching your video. I received it two days ago. I will still be one of those people that will still buy a tube amp. I am looking at a Fender '65 Twin Reverb.
When discussing quality to price ratio, I think a Toyota Tacoma or Camry is a great example of the sweet spot (for me). My guitar version of a Tacoma is my ‘12 G&L tribute ASAT classic.
Affordable Guitars: I just bought a new Epiphone "Inspired By Gibson" Firebird for $649. Amazing looks, playability and tones. Although it may be considered a mid-priced guitar, it blew me away. The cheaper stuff has gotten a LOT better....
?? I’m watching an Alamo music video where they are comparing high end Martins to more affordable ones. which one would be less impacted by the change in temperature and humidity? A solid wood guitar or laminate guitar?
31:31 my wrap around on my 94 cu22 has the solid bar i bought a hipshot baby grand its amazing but i got tone pros locking studs my original studs for baby grand actually ended up breaking great company! Sent a replacement right away! But the tone pros locking studs are so much better solid brass retaining the look of the original studs but still allowing it to lock in place however i literally for the life of me could not find one that would fit diameter wise! So hello drill press caliper and fine fret level file time to make 7mm turn into 6.5mm 😂 it worked perfectly looks great factory even!moral work smart not hard 😊
I think nearly everyone who is 40 years or older who’s at all into music knows what a Marshall stack looks like at least, even if they’re not guitar people. It’s hard to get that kind of brand awareness in any kind of business.
My Iceman has high frets so it requires a certain touch, but it’s not tricky for me But it’s why I learned to do at least a basic setup Others set it up for different frets and it doesn’t work for me, but the way I like it set up, it plays great And then you address fret stuff I have had one level & crown done on the Iceman (due it being used in my absence for slide with a plumber’s wrench-argh!) But they set it properly because they knew it had high frets I can confirm that it will still feel pretty close
I see that the import model of the Chapman Danish Pete signature T-style will be made in India (not Indonesia). Thoughts on quality on Made in India guitars? Depends on the factory I’m sure but I don’t recall any guitars coming out of India.
Sometimes we don't wart to take Studio Queens to a rowdy gig, when a $500 instrument can do a good job. Sure, no exotic woods, no exotic shapes, no exotic finishes, and maybe we need a tune up a few times more during the gig, but they play and sound just fine. I own a Kiesel $2k Bass, I currently gig an old affinity PB with DR flats.
Hey Phil I'd like to see you explore the brand Godin. It seems to me the build quality of their guitars are incredible, and the brand had so much potential, but I'm unsure who they are marketing to ? Is it the old cover band hero playing 50s and 60s covers at the golden years club ?
Phil. Is it possible that maybe some of the old Marshall employees had jumped ship and went over to Magnatone? I mean because as far as it goes it one particular sound that I’ve always thought he addressed The JCM 800 with his own circuit.
Slash just said that he wasn't parting ways with marshall, he is just collaboring with another amp company but he is still using and working with marshall so everything is fine!!! (source: Ultimate Guitar)

with photography you are recording light, so same thing with music if you take a working amp and put it behind a brick wall your recording of its tone will not be as good as you will have poor amount of noise.
The problem with a resale market was that the used gear was selling for new gear prices. Now the people are mad that they can't sell their gear for more than they paid for for it new.
Used market is a hard sell right now though.. new guitars may be selling at a decent rate but to sell a guitar or even pedals at the moment is near impossible unless you want to mark down significantly from market value
There’s only one place Slash should go to amp wise: Friedman. 😉 I play bass. Once had a gig on a festival where my beautiful 300 watt tube USA’s finest bass amp (I will not mention the brand) broke down on me for the last time! It always did! It was like Amp Ache every other gig, people! (Wished I kept my Marshall VB-400!) A guitarist from another band came to the rescue with his Friedman 100 watt guitar head. He just said: ‘Use this; she’ll do...’ And she did. Big time! And this guitarist standing there laughing. He knew just what this amp could do: like an old Marshall Super Bass. Creamy! When I ever win the lottery, I get myself a Friedman! Two, if I can. 50 watts will do. 😉 Slash going to Friedman would be the most sane thing to do. All Marshall fans will get it in an instant. Magnatone is a cool and nice brand. But everybody needs our old Slash on the very best Marshalls there is: Friedman. And, having his pedalboards and signalchain sorted out at the same time? Simple stuff: Friedman. He loves Marshalls so much, he’ll take care of their heritage, and than some. Wish he would love bass just a little bit more too, 🤣. That would kill most if not all the competition. But, I get it, he’s a busy humanoïd... 🖖
re: fret wire…I don’t understand why manufacturers are so lax about frets…its the most important spec next to neck profile…I’m a freak about fret size so theres that!!
Flat frets are AMAZING!!! Not sure why everyone loves big frets. All we need is some sort of tactile sense of where a fret is for our finger and enough height for the string to get 'caught' on. anything beyond that is unnecessary.
Used gear prices are unrealistic, but what will tell the tale down the road as far as a market price correction is concerned, will be whether those new covid guitarists were selling because they wanted to upgrade or because they lost interest and quit. It's quite a paradox. Never before has there been more, better quality, affordable gear available---in spades, while at the same time existing in an era when less guitar based music is being produced for public consumption.
I reckon Vox ac30s ... Good ones ... are one of the few amps that sound good in any room. The 80s Korg models by Marshall I think are rippers. Loud though
It's crazy for him to leave Marshall but its one of two things. Either he's running a cleaner Magnatone with his Marshalls which is what Fortus does with his Supros and sounds great or Magnatone made a copy of his Marshall and paid him more money. Many pros run two different style amps at the same time. Even I run a Supro and a Marshall at the same time. It sounds awesome. Too bad Supro didn't do the Fortus Marshall style amp. Especially if it was reasonably priced.
A few artists of sufficient stature can be with more than one company at a time. He5field and Hammet have Gibson and ESP, Abasi did a sig with EBMM despite owning his own company. Maybe Slash is doing this with Marshall and Magnatone. Hard to see a small company offering enough cash to fully replace Marshall.
Phil, I disagree with the SLASH explanation, he’s getting on in age, touring not as much. Unless he opens for Swift, or plays back up the money may dry up. Marshall is run now by a group of venture capitalists. What ever contract Slash had, was reworked with an out option. Slash said show me the money…Marshall showed him the door. His endorsement is not required in Marshall’s view.
Positive grid is poor on customer support for the spark they are non existent for the Bias amp, you have to the back door on the web site to find a manual like they are ashamed of the amp and don't want to admit they built it and they run well over a thousand bucks when I bought mine and why I have sense sold it and gone to Axe-Fx.
IDK what you're talking about. There is enormous amounts of Coov gear, NWT, for less far less than new. Amps, etc., too. Im getting some stuff I always wanted basically 3-1 vs new. FB Marketplace is your goto friends.
On cheap guitar videos, the quality in what you're calling cheap is beginning to surpass that of high end guitars... that's a massive draw amongst the curious. But it's also a draw for the normal everyday guitarist who knows their gear needs to be affordable but also able to withstand the daily rigors.
It looks like slash is still with Marshall, just doing Magnatone too. Kind of like Kirk is still an ESP artist AND now working with Gibson too. Might be the new move. Not exclusive to single companies but partner with multiple companies.
I have a legit question: Why do the older rock guitarists(not metal) prefer single coiled guitars over humbuckers? Guys like Hendrix and Clapton...and even younger players with an older style seem to prefer Strats. Why is that? I know the tonal differences, but the advantages of humbuckers seem to make them superior. Like you can make a hum emulate a single coil tone thanks to coil splitting, but not vice versa. I can understand a blues player using nothing but a Tele or Strat for the brightness, but it seems you'd want as much versatility as possible for rock and hard rock. This has always been a mystery to me.
No real way to suggest a first tube amp to someone 'coming' from modellers, without knowing music they like to play, budget and use case (Band, bedroom, apartment etc) AT a minimum.
I love cheap guitars. I can be a kid with them, and as a hobbyist that’s the feeling I want. Let the stress fall away and feel like a kid for a few minutes

“Indigenous Peoples Day.”
I LOVE the Wilhelm scream at the beginning
I love cheap guitars from Squier and Epiphone especially the ones made prior to 2018.
I bought so many and they were the only brands for almost 6 years
It took me that long to get a mex strat
It's all about the neck for me and if the neck isn't tiny and it plays very well, the guitar has a chance to some home with me.
As a vet, you're welcome, and thank you for being awesome!
On Charvel DK24 HSS the neck pickup is RWRP

Phil, this episode reminded me that I learned from you that it's ok to tell the tech when I need a setup that fret buzz isn't that important.
Your comment about learning the Bossa Nova on the bass was important. I have read many times about “training to failure”. Marshall is one of the cornerstones of rock!

Intonation: I like small frets, low action, large fretboard radius and individual saddles and just a touch of relief.
I have a guitar with the fret problem. Filing did little to help. The gap was too small for me to see but I could feel it. In the end I used a speck of Suoerglue to fill the gap. It might not be perfect for everyone but it wouldn't be any better for me if fixed properly.

Good stuff Phil! Not a fan of the scream at the end of the kyg intro though.🙏🏻
It’s a wilhelm scream, a famous trope
??? Hey Phil, Which Mesa Boogie am do ya think SLASH would play?!? Thanks.
Yeah i'm feeling it, and i'm trying to resell a guitar on ebay right now, but its going for way less then it should.
Affordable Guitars: I just bought a new Epiphone "Inspired By Gibson" Firebird for $649. Amazing looks, playability and tones. Although it may be considered a mid-priced guitar, it blew me away. The cheaper stuff has gotten a LOT better....
Richard Fortus left Supro for Magnatone, not surprised.
Phil Toyota just released a small Toyota truck for 10 grand..... but its only available in Thailand.
Will you review the Nuno N4 on the wall? Thanks.
Sounds like a win for Marshall
?? I’m watching an Alamo music video where they are comparing high end Martins to more affordable ones. which one would be less impacted by the change in temperature and humidity? A solid wood guitar or laminate guitar?

And then you address fret stuff
I have had one level & crown done on the Iceman (due it being used in my absence for slide with a plumber’s wrench-argh!)
But they set it properly because they knew it had high frets
I can confirm that it will still feel pretty close
Phil - have you ever reviewed the Silktone 12W amp with the KT66?
I see that the import model of the Chapman Danish Pete signature T-style will be made in India (not Indonesia). Thoughts on quality on Made in India guitars? Depends on the factory I’m sure but I don’t recall any guitars coming out of India.
Sometimes we don't wart to take Studio Queens to a rowdy gig, when a $500 instrument can do a good job. The JCM 800 with his own circuit.
Another Slash amp I don’t need, don’t want, and couldn’t afford anyway.
a "modicum" of success...not "moniker." 😳 LOL...luv u Phil
KYG is your "moniker" of success!
59:30 Blame it on the Bossa Nova 😊
The Experience - I like the way my Fender Amps smell when I "get 'em going." :)
What do you think of AIO guitars?
Slash just said that he wasn't parting ways with marshall, he is just collaboring with another amp company but he is still using and working with marshall so everything is fine!!!
(source: Ultimate Guitar)
If you wanna hear what a Magnatone can do go check out Marc Fords solo music.
Their amps are so fantastic!
ANYBODY OUT THERE....PLEASE SOMBODY WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE EARLY 90'S JACKSON KB1 KELLY BASSES? Did they all get thrown in fires? It's like they never existed? I HAVE to have one. Let me know if anybody wants to get rid of a used one.
is new KYG merch available yet?
with photography you are recording light, so same thing with music if you take a working amp and put it behind a brick wall your recording of its tone will not be as good as you will have poor amount of noise.
I predict any guitar built in the last ten years, unless it’s custom shop, will sell for half of what it cost to buy originally
I’m usually only curious about most expensive guitars when I’m in a guitar shop and have the opportunity to play one.
Many besides Slash lack confidence in Marshall’s new ownership.
🥸 5:20 pacific time??? First comment!?!? 🌈 Thanks Phill ⚓️
how come no one talked or talking about when satriani left marshall?
funny you mention the toyota. They've announced a bare bones 10k truck in the last few days.
There’s only one place Slash should go to amp wise: Friedman. 😉
I play bass. Once had a gig on a festival where my beautiful 300 watt tube USA’s finest bass amp (I will not mention the brand) broke down on me for the last time! It always did! It was like Amp Ache every other gig, people! (Wished I kept my Marshall VB-400!)

🖖
Regarding RW/RP I will buy a Schaller Mega-Switch for the artist's-inspired-by-model guitar mod.
I'll get the Tonex sound capture of the Slash/Magnatone amp for like $20...
re: fret wire…I don’t understand why manufacturers are so lax about frets…its the most important spec next to neck profile…I’m a freak about fret size so theres that!!
Maybe Marshall may put out an AC\DC signature amp if their sales start to decline
I want your Soldano amp…
Slash is blending his sound. The more interesting thing is billy going with those guys. Got me interested.
Did you happen to see Andy Timmons at Black Mountain Guitars? I couldn’t make it. Bummed.
Flat frets are AMAZING!!! Not sure why everyone loves big frets. All we need is some sort of tactile sense of where a fret is for our finger and enough height for the string to get 'caught' on. anything beyond that is unnecessary.
Can you imagine all the heads exploding at Gibson HQ if Slash announces he’s going to play another guitar brand and endorse them!
Used gear prices are unrealistic, but what will tell the tale down the road as far as a market price correction is concerned, will be whether those new covid guitarists were selling because they wanted to upgrade or because they lost interest and quit. General info: Phil and Shauna are real people with real lives and opinions based on experience and truth. That's why KYG is such fun every week.

His endorsement is not required in Marshall’s view.
The most common "my guitar won't stay in tune" problem I've seen is improper stringing.
Slash set the record straight yesterday saying his relationship with Marshall will continue while also working with Magnatone
Man, so many ads this week! I couldn’t make it through the episode.

It looks like Kiesel is going to miss that 3rd generation jinx 😂
Get a Friedman Small Box pedal and you have the best sounding Marshall with any amp. Fact.
It looks like slash is still with Marshall, just doing Magnatone too. Kind of like Kirk is still an ESP artist AND now working with Gibson too.
Might be the new move. Not exclusive to single companies but partner with multiple companies.
Did Phil hear that Toyota announced a $10K pickup truck this week?
To bad it’s not available in the USA or I would have pre ordered 2 of them
Not for the U.S. market. Being sold in Thailand and possibly Mexico.
The look nice a basic!
