Phil, I speak on behalf of everyone on the internet: We love you. Please don’t ever change!!
Hey Phil! One year ago tomorrow, I was sitting in a hospital room listening to your show as I rocked my newborn baby daughter in my arms. I asked if you had any advice for a musician that’s just become a first time father, and your advice was simple: “Don’t stop playing”. And while I am much busier than I was a year ago, I am happy to report that I am actually playing more than ever with a full slate of shows ahead with my cover band this summer. Happy Father’s Day, Phil! And thanks for all that you do to inspire the rest of us!
Man, Thank you for this comment. HAPPY Fathers day!!!
You’re the man, Phil! I just wanted you to know that you’re genuinely helping people. I appreciate your weekly doses of inspiration, and so do many others. Enjoy your weekend!
Woah I actually remember your question and Phil answering it haha
Congrats brotha! 🤘🏻
That's awesome to hear! I just turned 40, have an almost 21 year old and a 13 year old, I am just getting into building my own pedals, and I record music with two other TH-cam musicians across the country.
One reason i am still watching after all these years is that Phil has shown himself to be considerate and respectful of others even when they disagree or have done him dirty. How he expressed departing from the Badlands company was painful to hear not because of Phil but because I felt his pain and appreciate what it is like to have a knife stuck in your back after going out of your way for others.
This has been and will continue to be my FAVORITE GUIITAR channel. Period
Happy Father's Day, Phil! Thank you for "The KYG Podcast". I look forward to viewing/listening to it each and every week.
ref: Badlands (or anything else). You stood by the customers to the best of your ability and ultimately out of your own time, effort and cash. Not many people are prepared to do that in the guitar, or any other, business. You can't buy a good reputation. Once it's gone, it's gone. Here's a big thumbs up to you Phil . You're a roll model that everyone should look at.
Happy father's day Phil!
Regarding Yr. "Badlands Experience": If I were in Yr. shoes, I wouldn't want ANYTHING around that reminded me of it, either!
@ this point, there DEFINITELY won't be any Badlands Guitars in MY future... 🤨
I guess I'll say it, Badlands seems sketch. To stick two from a group of four or more with a company burden or bill seems shady to me. I'm finding it hard to see it any other way. 🧐
Come on Quilter, let Phil show your new stuff.
Great show Phil. I appreciate your honesty, your lack of pretense and your self-deprecating humor. I apologize for not being one of your very aware, very intelligent live cast viewers but they ask much better questions than I ever could anyway. However, I usually try to watch the post of the live show because it's always informative and always entertaining. I don't actually know if that affects your numbers negatively, but I want you to know that there are probably a lot of us who still end up seeing it...and very much appreciate what you do.
I'd love to meet you and thank you in person some day, but honestly... I can't imagine going to a place hotter☀️🔥than Florida (where I live) since the older and fatter I get...the less I enjoy the summer 😂. Thanks for sharing your life with us and much continued success, and good health to you.🙏
I have a 93-94 Carvin DC127C I bought when I was 16 for $250 back in 03-04. Crazy that guitar can go for over 1K now
No Badlands connection anymore? WOW! so sorry.....
Badlands: LOL, you were one of two owners on paper. They had the balls to demand back the prototype guitar AND stick you with 10K of tax liability. I want you as a partner Phil. Were it me, they could have back their guitar, I would take 50% of the business. Selling the guitars you BOUGHT with your own money did not make you break even. You lost 10K while the other three did great. Don't care how nice you think you are, you make very bad business decisions. Those other three hosed you and you stood there and took it. Sounds like the other three are a bunch of clowns that will soon sink there own ship and took you for well over 10K. Badlands would never have got off the ground without your promotion. Oh well, I'm sure you didn't need or want that 10K anyway and had nothing better to do with all the time you invested in a company that only seemed to want to use you for their own gain. I just about bought one, glad I didn't. I never will in the future either.
I am sorry I do not understand how you can receive $0 from your work with Badlands Guitars yet you were on the hook for $20k for taxes and paid an accountant to get your loss at $10k and you are not mad? I understand you do not want to dis anyone but what you say seems not fair to you. I only know how I would react and I would be upset.
Been watching Phil for a long time and I think we share a similar sense of justice when it comes to these kinds of issues. I do not let myself walk away from anything without paying my share even if its more than it should be due to other people's dysfunction. Not long ago had an HVAC job done by a company that had been good to me in the past. They padded the bill and lied to me when I asked for an explanation. After a few days back and forth in email and text I called the owner and gave him one more chance to make it right after having a chance to review what his people did. He sat firm so I told him that I will pay the invoice that is just who I am but requested he put his name on it and send it to me again so the lies were coming from him directly. That next invoice was almost 40% lower and only included work that was actually performed. At some point its about being the better person
He probably is upset, but if he expresses that on YT then the rage machine starts. Every TH-camr takes a side, they rant and rave, make clickbait titled videos which get tons of views, he gets pummeled with email, comments and takes, deals with shitloads of stress, and has to lay low for a week or two while it blows over.
For what? A couple extra dollars on a rant video?
"The best revenge is living well."
Phil says he's not smart, he's just experienced. I bet his experience just grew - next time he sets up a new partnership, you can bet all the partners are on the paperwork.
@@PaulCooksStuff Sometimes you don't know how a business really operates until there is an issue. Phil stepped up while some of the other guys stood back and watched. Their loss I am sure next time he has a desire to partner up they won't be involved
@@I.am_Groot Agreed Phil McKnight is a class act and stand-up guy!
Wow sounds like Badlands absolutely shafted Phil…that’s brutal. Massive respect for him watching out for their customers (I bet largely his audience)
I LOVE that Nuno swirl so much! Super rad
Hey yall mission engineering is going to start making sunn amps a block over from Mesa Boogie in Petaluma
The original Starcaster headstock makes the guitar, that’s what’s cool about it. I like big stocks and I cannot lie!
Phil! That's why you don't throw stuff away. just sayin'.
I hope I learned my lesson.
WTG John Burks! Enjoy that gorgeous Gretsch!
Enjoyed the 'cast once again, Phil! Listened to the "Live Stream" while working in my shop with the roll-up door open, and temp @ '74 F with 30% RH and bright/sunny! I feel for you though, 'cuz I've been there (or worse) in the past! I have a Quilter Tone Block 202 (with Reverb) that I can highly recommend! It hasn't met a Cabinet it didn't like; and it doubles as a FANTASTIC mic Pre-amp! It's also VERY portable and reliable, besides! Just buy one, eh? 🙂
I love that Washburn! Totally not what I typically go for, but the journey and choices made make it awesome!
Thanks Phil. On your rec I hit up Sweetwater for a slate blue D Angelico single cut Excel at half price and they took off another $150 for a stated flaw that never materialized. Lucky me. Came in perfectly set up and intonated. Great sounding Supro Pu’s. WOW.
digging the N4 Jam nice tone
Thank you
But......
There is a story there. Perhaps someday we will hear it.
I understand completely that no good deed goes unpunished.
Keep being the better person Phil. You are my role model for not taking the low road.
Im so tempted to everyday.
Hey, always late to the pod cast happy Father’s Day Phil. Thanks for all the great content.🎉
Happy Fathers to Phil and all the Know You Gear Fathers! 🎸
I've been really interested in Badlands guitars mainly because you (Phil) were involved but honestly now I'm on the fence about them.
Brilliant episode as always :-D
LA: Asken Guitars installed my Evertune. Fren Asken also makes amazing guitars. Gonna buy one next year for my 55th.
Thanks!
I got to see Junior Brown at Coda Concert House in Joplin, MO a few years ago. Amazing.
Hey Phil, thanks for your service, I think it’s great that you helped the Badlands guys launch their company.
I think they should have let you keep the Hollow Flash prototype.
If you would have done that, would you have sold it to help the tax bill,
Cheers Rik
Huge fan, Phil!
Adam D from Killswitch Engage stopped using Parkers because of a "fret issue" but didn't expand on that. Could this be who you were recalling?
? Phil, just my luck, however, I have to congratulate the winner of the cool Gretsch guitar.
Maybe I will become lucky on a giveaway.
You did that Laney pedal, and you like it.
I bought a Laney Lionheart 20, 10 years ago; and it is a Head amp; yes, it has Reverb. Two channel Clean and Drive.
re: guitar tech in San Diego - John at Music Mart Solana Beach is great
Happy Father's Day Phil ❤🙏
Podcast this week 10/10 👍🤗👍
They stuck you with a 20k tax bill where you saw no profit yet there is nothing else going on? Seems suspicious but it seems you're at peace with it so that's all that matters.
They did him dirty and he’s the bigger person.
congrats John. You deserve it more than me.
Happy Dads Day. I used to be the lazy guy until I had a daughter, that changed everything as far as going to the store and being lazy in general. She is almost 8 and attached at my hip so theres no getting away and I know it won't last so I try to enjoy every minute.
Hey Phil, I think it would be very difficult to do an accurate testing to determine the difference in sound between the headless guitar and the guitar with the headstock. Even if you use the same set of pickups for both, because such a small difference in pickup height can make a very noticeable difference in sound, and also the setup of the guitar itself effects the sound. It's so difficult to get the setup and pickup height of two guitars to be identical. A gauge isn't precise enough, maybe with a set of calipers it would be easier, but I haven't tried that.
Gary Levinson guitars ... strat style H4 and his Jazzmaster style JM, if you can one (rare).
BTBs are nice basses.
I prefer Soundgears, which is what I have
But both are real nice basses.
Comfortable, great necks, sound good, etc.
Last time I looked though they only made 5&6 strings, and I prefer 4 strings
I know someone who got a great deal on a used 4 string BTB, and recommended he buy it.
Since they stopped making 4 strings, he snapped it off
Ibanez makes great basses
Excellent!
Shoes? We’re lucky you were wearing pants! LMAO
I’d love to see Serger guitars reviewed!
This channel is addicting. It feels like I’m having a beer with a friend talking about guitars. I would like to participate with questions though, do I need to be a patreon with that? Oh and I have 3 Kiesel guitars, they all play great!
The Starcasters weren't "abominations"; they were Squier Bullets, that sold for a lot less than they would in a guitar store.
The big advantage of the Starcaster by Fenders were that they came in all of the cool colors that were used by famous strat players. I.e. If Richie Blackmore was your guitar hero, they had the white strat. If you wanted a strat like Robin Trower was using at the time - the Cherryburst Strat was there for you. Want Clapton's "Blackie" - they had one. (Still on the lookout for the Pelham Blue strat - only one I am missing.)
If you look at the Squier catalogs from the time - they didn't have any of the cool colors, and they were twice as expensive.
They also made a Starcaster Tele (in black), a Precision Bass, & a Jazz Bass.
In addition, each of the big box retailers had their own specialty color.
As a final note - they also made a couple of different amps (rebadged Frontman 10 & 25 watt amps), as well as 3 pedals (Chorus, Distortion, and Flanger).
Bose Waveform CD player I have the one with 3 CD loader too
The best Techs in San Diego are "The Repair Zone" and Moze Guitars...
I can confirm The Repair Zone. Did great work on my lefties!
@@two50ne77 your lefty too...cool
have an 80s JBJ and it reads 18.6K its high but its not super hot despite that, very clear and articulate, not a gain monster.
My understanding is that the sunn trademark is still owned by fender but they have little to no involvement in the physical production of the reissues. It seems like some of the old Sunn designers from pre-fender days are back in the driver’s seat.
A theme of see Phil I’ve seen over the years is he enjoys guitars that either are intentionally ugly or designed to trigger people
Green swirl.... thought it would look like puke but actually it was pretty awesome 💚
Be careful if picks are ending up in the dryer. I had to call an appliance repair guy when my old washing machine wouldn’t drain, during March break when our son (who played his guitar a lot in those days) was home from universityl. After working on it for a bit, he said he found the problem, and it was the first time he ever found a guitar pick blocking the pump. Problem solved, and lesson re emptying pockets before doing laundry learned.
I hung out with Larry Mitchell severel times in the studio (studio works and a CAROLS PLACE BOTH IN ISLAND PARK,NY

Congratulations to the winner!!!!!!
If you can find aircraft grade epoxy very good very reliable in differing temperature and pressures as well as change in humidity
Peavey USA is by far the most guitar for the money imo.
...but forget I said that
i saw varga alongside prong and white zombie way back when
Not sure why TH-cam had me down as dislike 🤔
It's a like now 😂👌🏻
Happy Father's Day!
My dad passed away almost three weeks ago
Tomorrow I'm getting the Deep Purple - Made in Japan vinyl, that record was a special connection for us
We played that Child in Time version as the last song during his funeral
I don't even own a record player 😄
don't forget there was a Starcaster Acoustic as well
If i mailed you my quilter superblock US I would think you would like it a lot. Especially if you like the Princeton so much
Larry Mitchell super nice and super Humble I bought one of his older GUITARS
BY MODULUS GRAPHITE I WAS A DUMMY TO SELL IT.
Junior Brown is great!
Junior Brown ‘Guit with it’ is one of my favorite all time CDs, still do this day
43:45 Ah ok. I always wondered why some guitars just sound better even though they're the exact same model. Some wood just resonates better, but I didn't know there was so much variation in pickups as well.
I also think how straight the neck is (little or no relief) makes a difference. But I haven't done any testing
That kiesel plugin is from McRocklin's PolyChrome company.
Great show and I'm glad there is nothing seedy going on with Badlands. People want to like what you like as they admire you and basically they don't want to be a part of a company making bad decisions long-term.
Ha BASS is A GUITAR. Us bass players love the show!
Cold plunge? You’re Nuckin’ futz! lol
Phil, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY !!! ¡¤¡
Junior Brown & David Bowie - most cool!
I'm not sure that people who watch this channel are expecting Phil to "gossip" about Badlands or any other company for that matter. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that most (not all) of your subscribers come to this channel each week because of Phil's kindness, empathy, and integrity.
There will always be those people who thrive on gossip, back-stabbing, drama, etc. I don't think too many people expect to find that here @ KYD, and that is why a lot of us come back week after week, year after year, because there are a few dozen YTer guitar channels out there, but those who demonstrate empathy, integrity, and have a kind heart are few in number. Just my two cents.
Happy Father's Day to all~
1:08:55 sounds like Isaac Brock MODEST MOUSE
Twenty thousand dollars is one hell of a tax lesson.
Phil, I don't feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for people who can not seem to do the right thing and end up hurting someone who considered them a friend. People like you will always come out ahead somehow Phil. You are one of two people who can influence my gear purchases. One of two people on YT whos opinion I value about my sound and instrument upkeep.
West Marine, Gougon Brothers for epoxy. 5 to 1. 3 to 1 is a mix of good and bad. 1 to 1, like the syringe style is garbage.
Great show once again. Rock on!
Originally, the "starcaster by fender" guitars were basically a rebranded squier affinity and you can tell them by their pointy headstocks...after a couple years they started having them made in china with a strat style headstock, and those are the ones that ruined it because they were just garbage even compared to an affinity
Started on one of those with the oversized Strat headstock (I think same as Affinity?) about 14 years ago. I recall it being pretty decent for being pretty much a toy. Been seeing some more recent videos talking up those old Starcasters because I think they used full sized bodies, so modding potential is better than something like an Affinity.
@@ONOBITCH I have a 2004 p-bass model, made by cort in indonesia, that was the first year...these were supposed to be starter instruments, but this thing is fullscale wide neck with a 12" radius, makes me glad I got to start on a jazz bass instead...but yea it's not downsized in any way, except maybe the weight thanks to the basswood body, I upgraded all the hardware and electronics with legit fender parts without any fitment issues
Originally they were the semi hollow type in the 70s .
Something is bugging me. A couple of months ago Phil mentioned a guitar brand that was one of his favourites. I was unaware of them but then they appeared to be mentioned in a few places. This was an ex-head of PRS design in partnership with another guy. Just bugging me that I can't remember. There was a video interview around somewhere.
Was it Knaggs?
@@BuChan89 Yeah, Joe Knaggs is the guy's name I think. They seemed to be on everybody's lips for a few weeks after I think Phil was the first to mention them. Thanks for that.
I really wish i could figure out why i either get zero notification of your video drops, or i get it several hours after they come out and i dont see it because its so long down my timeline.
You mention Redline ... is it a name brand, or is it a Godin (go-don) Redline???
It was the name of the first Badlands Guitar model. The body was black with a bunch of red striping on it.
HAPPY Father's Day

Funny
I used to sell gemstones n crystals.
Those people made me quit.
Barmy Army.
Big Wreck is criminally underrated. Ian Thornley has so many tones. It would be so cool if you could do a review of his Suhr.
Suhr guitar???
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Wow, Great entertainment Phil..... Did you get the original dessert plunge or the wide dessert lunch, plunge...? Great looking product..... I think I may need to go to this spa modality versus once a week 190 degree sauna 20 minutes. Steam 10 minutes.......
Add twice a week 2.5 hours weights, 3 to 4 days cardio mix 1 hour plus.....
We haven’t had a queen in the UK since she died in September 2022 Phil, so some of the Scots and Irish can now direct their feelings towards King Charles!😂
frets fell off my nitefly. 🤷♂️
Nitefly frets are installed the same as regular guitars they pressed in
You can start a new guitar company with Rob Chapman lol
Not sure why you’d bring Phil on as a partner on something like building guitars and then ignore his advice… absolutely wild
I wouldn't mind having a part of a demo using a plugin like Neural DSP or Polychrome DSP. If it's the same setting for each demo, it makes it a constant to know what's the guitar and pickups and whats the amp. If its a unique setting for the demo, you can always include the preset as a download for people to recreate the sound.
San Diego: I’ve had good work done by Moze Guitar, Mark’s Guitar, and Pitbull Audio/Music Store Live.
Guitar Trader used to do good work. Are they back?
The Moze guys suggested and an experienced local amp repair tech but I don’t recall the name. I’ll post it later.
The usual suspect for amp work in San Diego is Top Gear
Phil, what is the guitar of the week?
I can't believe after you carried Badlands on your back for so long (in all aspects of the business) they ask you to give back the prototype. Seems like a spite move to me. Maybe there is more to the situation, but those guys sound like a bunch of jackholes to me and your better off washing your hands of the situation (even if it cost you some $$ to do so).
I think BTB basses are about as ugly as an instrument can get.
