I could sit here, drink coffee and listen to Joe Bonamassa talk guitar for the rest of my life. This man is a national treasure. And Shifty is a great dude with an excellent program. Thanks for this!!!!
This interview is FANTASTIC because it evolves from an ordinary "celebrity musician " type run of the mill interview into a true GUITAR LESSON" and that adds order of magnitude to the every metric of value I can think of,..LoL Joe is incredibly well studied in , not only the history of vintage instruments, but the techniques, styles and habits of the artists and personalities of seemingly every generation of blues players from the delta to modern times. I eman just in passing he mentions Delta blues players like BBKing, ,.Chicago blues, UK blue-eyed blues players ( Clapton , & Beck ) , SRV and his "Texas Style among many others. The mans a living , walking encyclopedia of the genre.
Joe and J.Mayer share the dedication to guitar craftsmanship … articulating the sound, composition, practice, guitars … we are lucky to have them around
John is around because the industry wanted him. Joe was rejected by the industry and has just been a lingering wart for, as he claims, “the past 25 years” only to finally find memeification In the last few years. Gotta respect that, despite how much (both) their music sucks.
I haven't finished this video yet, but I'm just over an hour in and I'm loving it. I've never felt like a "real" guitar player, even though I played in front of live crowds for nigh on 30 years because I played mostly in churches and never got paid. It was truly a labor of love. Hearing you guys just talk to each other brings back so many memories and has finally convinced me of something. Playing Gospel songs for free didn't make it any easier or less real. It just meant I had to work that much harder on my day job! 😅 Thank you guys for that. That's the most important takeaway for me in this excellent video. 👏
I saw Joe Bonamassa last knight in Delaware (Freeman Arts Pavilion). I knew he was a great guitarist, but dayum! I didn't know it was legal doing some of those things he does with a guitar! Every note is played as if it was critical to the melody because it was even if it was cat step quiet. His phrasing is almost unheard of. He takes the music places; soft, loud, pointed, rounded. The phrase moves, it's going somewhere. It was amazing!
I’m a 68 year old divorced father. Had wife, house, bills, schooling not been so hard on me financially I’d be like Joe. So for all of us watching this who can’t for the cost of living be like Joe. We can all enjoy the joy of guitar thru him cause he’s sharing visually his collection but he’s opening his heart to the love all of us have for these pieces of wood and wires . Your alright Joe ✌🏻 Thanks amigo
Great interview Mr. Shiflett. Love your solo music and Foo Fighters. Mr. Bonamassa is such a great down to earth guy. This interview was great. Its like he just chatting with friends. Thank you for Sharing. I just love hearing people tell their stories. Cheers from Canada!
I love just listening to him talk fluently about the things he loves. Honestly, is nice to hear anyone speak about their loves. Thanks for the knowledge and history lessons, Joe.
Fantastic conversation! I particularly love the discussion at 50:00 - about time compression onstage and how the audience only knows you're miserable, if you let them know you're miserable.
I always enjoy listening to Joe talk about the business of music as well as his guitar and amplifier collection. The one thing I've learned is that whether Gibson, or any other manufacturer, is that they can build a vintage original spec guitar and is will closely emulate the sound of the vintage guitar. Ok, it may not have been the guitar played by Eric Clapton on the Beano album (or others on their works). But, these guitars are exact copies of those guitars and when matched with the right amp get really close to the sounds of those artists of the '50's, '60's, '70's and '80's. So, thank you Shifty for interviewing Joe and thank you Joe for sharing your amazing skill and taking the time out of your schedule to be the ambassador of the blues as well as vintage musical instruments that you are. You are the best!!
A guitar player like Joe who collects, conserves and Plays vintage guitars makes me smile. Billionaire collectors like the guy who had/has the songbird guitar museum stuffed with vintage guitars…not so much. Joe is such a chill educator. Awesome show
I've admired Joe Bonamassa for years, and I found this dialog very interesting. The right blend of career history, technical detail, technique and guitar nerd philosophy. Chris had great questions as well. Well done, gents!
Here's how I see it. Joe works hard and plays hard. He's a go getter and ambitious. He deserves what he has. And if he can afford the things that he seeks out, then God bless I always say. P.S. very good interview on both ends. This is better then any movie or Netflix.
I've been on the planet a long time. Playin since 15. Seen Hendrix and most of the legends. This video is one of the best I've been fortunate enough to see thanks to Joe's straight forward honesty and he's a human encyclopedia of guitar techniques and is able to translate the hows and whys for guitar players to understand the language of guitars. Bravo JB! I have a whole new respect for you. For the idiots that think you hoard too many music instruments. F' them and they are just jealous of your love and capability to become as successful as you are. It doesn't hurt that you're Italian which I am also. My TH-cam name is my joke name from 60 mins TV show. I have a custom George Scholz built ALL tube design amp that has the best natural over drive I've ever heard and I've heard alot of amps in my days. I know you would appreciate its superior tube tone. No need for pedal drive, All P to P . Might send you one to try if interested? I'm a Bluesman from LI 😉😉...
Thank you Chris. The coolest thing I learned from this interview with Joe Bonamassa was that he picks every note minus a few pull offs, I mean, but he just doesn’t use Legato. I had no idea. I’ve always admired his note choices and I think you got into that in the interview, but picking every note really reinforces that idea of note selection. Great interview. Thank you❗️
Big Joe Bonamassa fan as well. He's my favorite living guitarist with Stevie Ray Vaughan being my all time favorite. The two songs Joe plays that I enjoy the lead guitar work on the most are, "Reconsider Baby" and, "So Many Roads." Incredible guitar work on both. Blues Deluxe is great as well. I started playing when I was 15 and am 63 now and although I'm not that great I still love to hear the greatest guitarists like Joe, SRV, Hendrix, Moore, Gilmour, Johnson and others.
I love Joe Bonamassa. He is my favorite living guitarist, but I gotta say, I love guitar nerd Joe even more. Like I could nerd out with him over guitar for forever. Joe is just the kinda guy you wish you could hang out with. He is totally down to earth and cool. If I had his number, I would invite him to Dave's Guitar shop in La Crosse and we could hang out all day in his museum upstairs. I know it's probably nothing compared to Joe's collection, but he would still enjoy seeing it. Sufficient to say, I can't blame Joe for collecting... it is one of my favorite things about him.
Great Show Truly! Showing the passion, love & appreciation for music! I'm all in with "Shred with Shifty"! Keep up the great work Chris! 100 percent appreciated!
My “secret” for baffling my two Princeton Amos is to drill a couple of holes in the plastic about 4” in diameter speaker center. Works great for places like Wembley and SheaStadiums.
Joe gets bashed some but I respect the hell out of him. Not only as a musician but as a business man. Bypassing record companies and playing the venues he does is amazing!
The jealous people who give Joe a hard time about his collection of guitars do so because he relatable to the average person..so they see him as an easy target. Even in his stardom, he hasn't put up a wall like so many other famous peopel do. There are tons of other stars who have massive collections of vintage guitars, yet you don't hear people saying anything to them. When was the last time you heard one of those dummies saying, 'I hate Slash because he is buying up all of the good guitars'? Like Joe, Slash has multiple bursts and a ton of 50s and 60s Gibsons. But not one says anything about him. It is only Joe who gets insulted for doing what he loves and it is ridiculous. He earned every guitar and piece of gear that he has.
What a great interview! I love the respect that Joe has for what he collects. It’s hard to fault him for his well-earned success that’s brought him the means to become the custodian he is of these fine instruments and amps. He also uses them as the tools they were designed to be and I appreciate his willingness to share his passion.
Joe is one of the good souls in the business. Excellent choice for the show. Another great guest, in my humble opinion, would be Tom Bukovac. For those of you out there unfamiliar with his breadth of work, it would be worth checking out. Another great show Chris. Thank you
Honestly same, we haven’t don’t it in awhile but I remember last year my friend I play in a band with and I had the idea to listen to full albums that we’d each choose just so we can have a closer look at some of our individual influences and I also now own a record player and listen to stuff with that. It’s awesome
Me too! (I'm 40). When Spotify sent me the summary of my listening for 2023 it pointed out I am in the small percentage of people who listen to albums in full 😂.
A great interview can only be done if the interviewer does his work just like Chris does here. Chris, you're a great interviewer because you let Joe talk! Well done! Great to sit here and listen to you two explain how its done. You asked Joe great questions! Thanks for the great afternoon you just provided for me. I learned a lot.
Totally with him about the way he tests guitars. Same way. I’ve owned over 100 in my time, and I don’t think I’ve ever plugged one in before I bought it. It’s about how it looks, how the neck feels, and how heavy it is. Everything else can be changed later.
The blues is crazy. It takes over your mind when you're not paying attention and the next thing you know, you're playing stuff that you never even learned. Then you learn, then you unlearn, then you're just stumbling through the mystery of it all. Crazy.
Thanks for being a down to earth guy with a great outlook and I mean being humble and honest and educational about old guitars and amplifiers good luck be safe and enjoy the feeling of playing original music I believe comes from the soul
Go with that blue Fender, 2nd from left, to take on tour. That's sharp! That LP you had in your hands looked great, too! Great video! I discovered Joe at Albert Hall on PBS during their drive week and have been a fan ever since. The more I learned about his roots, and following him on TH-cam during the lockdown, the deeper that fanship ran.
My main guitar is an Epiphone Gold Top. I did swap out the factory pickups and put in Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in it! I was primarily a Fender player and still love them but this thing is a beast. The neck was huge so I had a local luthier slim the profile down for me. I get more compliments on my tone especially from other guitar players. Being a country player primarily, I had always favored a tele. This gold top is like a tele on steroids on clean tones and then when you hit it with gain pedals it just kicks the walls down. I would really love a Gibson but my budget kept me out of the market and I sorta had a stigma that my Epiphone was second rate but I'm way over it. I got a monster guitar for $500 bucks...$280 for pickups and $220 for a refret 10 years later and a neck profile adjustment included. At $1000 in total, I feel I more than got my monies worth!
I've watched all of these and a ton of Joe interviews. I love you guys and how much joy and genuine kid like happiness you bring in these discussions. Just demolish this idea that the best guitar players in the world have to have a sh attitude. Thanks guys for being yourself. It makes me feel good because I've never been the aloof type
Man living in South Africa I wish I experienced the era Joe is referring to. We had a very vibrant music scene. Not to mention Trevor Rabin (Yes) and arguably the best rock producer of our time Mutt Lange. Great respect for Kevin Shirley as well that produces Joe’s albums. Joe also uses Tull mics that is made by Tully Mccully in Cape Town. Our country’s music scene has just turned upside down and is nowhere at the moment. ( Well all the good stuff anyway). Thanks for a great interview
I have a cd player and a record player in every room... I dont have Spotify.... I have a Android mobile so I can slide songs straight onto it from windows player... music is the soul of life
Thank you JB. Great message. Buy what will inspire you to pick it up and play. I think that for most people has to be rule no1 cause not all of us have the resources to collect guitars.
I first heard Joe on the Bob and Tom show twenty something years ago and have loved his music ever since! He had a bus that said “Joe Bona-who?” on the back of it.😂
Another great episode! I’ll put in a vote to have Marty Stuart and Kenny Vaughn teach the solos in country boy rock n roll or have them on individually. Pretty much every solo either one plays in any song is a clinic.
Awesome, awesome, thanks so much guys for a fantastic interview, Joe is the best , period, he's "earned" every damn thing he has, and deserves everything he has, he learned how to make his way through hard work . God Bless you guys
I fucking LOVE when Joe says “ya know”! “Ya know, it’s just these 25 sweet-ass notes, ya know, played in less than a second, ya know, and ya just do it like this, ya know!?” NO JOE, WE DONT KNOW, DAMMIT!! CUZ US MERE MORALS CAN ONLY PLAY 5 NOTES A SECOND AT MOST! Lmfao!🤣 This is a great episode! As usual, I cannot get enough of Joe Bonamassa. I may not like all of his music, but I love and respect him as a person, his playing and his knowledge of music and musical instruments and equipment. I’d love to just sit and have a beer, or Diet Coke, with him and talk “Shop”!
This series, by a million miles, is the best guitar content on TH-cam.
wow - thanks!
thank you!!!
@@chrisshiflett5287 👍 going to see you with the Foo Fighter in May. Can’t wait!
Agreed
@joebonamassa we are due for a show in tell again of both nerdville locations! Can’t get enough of it man!
I could sit here, drink coffee and listen to Joe Bonamassa talk guitar for the rest of my life. This man is a national treasure. And Shifty is a great dude with an excellent program. Thanks for this!!!!
I second every word of this!!!
Agreed
And there’s probably a comment complaining about too much talking, wanting to hear gear demo’d
me too
Truth!
If I see a Joe Bo interview, I am all ears.
Chris asks great questions and then does a fantastic job listening. Thank you for not cutting this discussion. Joe is an interesting dude.

People compare them all the time. They are both great.
John Mayer is great, when he's not playing his own songs. When he's jamming some blues, love him
John is around because the industry wanted him. Joe was rejected by the industry and has just been a lingering wart for, as he claims, “the past 25 years” only to finally find memeification
In the last few years. Gotta respect that, despite how much (both) their music sucks.
@@bobbyj7470Man, if you think their music sucks, your music must be amazing! Got a link for your music?
The best Bonamassa interview I’ve seen. Joe seems super relaxed.
Chris is really a great interviewer that lets his guests talk and be themselves. Love this show!

Best one yet!
I have a Android mobile so I can slide songs straight onto it from windows player... music is the soul of life
That was AWESOME. Gonna watch again right now 😅
Thank you JB. Great message. Buy what will inspire you to pick it up and play. I think that for most people has to be rule no1 cause not all of us have the resources to collect guitars.
Really love hearing talk all things guitar and music such a wealth of knowledge . And total pro and monster on the guitar
Love Joe. So down to earth. Talented, smart and funny. ❤
I would like to say that for what it is worth, I still listen to albums from front to back (even on spotify)
Joe is unmatched simply amazing priceless such respect!❤❤❤❤❤
Joe nailed it talking about the running order of a record going away.
