Farang, the Thai word for foreigner, is the story of how chef Andy Ricker took a 25 year obsession and spun it into the Pok Pok restaurant empire. While impetus behind Andy opening a restaurant in the first place was a decision based wanting to be able to travel and not continue his house painting business, it became more than that. The focus of Andy's mission soon became to represent the culture and food of the people in Northern Thailand as faithfully as possible. He is constantly reinforcing the idea that he is not a chef, but merely a person who is helping to curate this cuisine in America. In the film Andy introduces us to 3 of his main inspirations Thailand for which he based some of his most successful dishes. Farang covers Andy's story from his childhood to present day, and was filmed between Chiang Mai, Portland, and New York. The filming was mostly done in May 2013 as Andy was getting ready to open up 6th restaurant, Sen Yai.

To me as a Thai, this is very flattering that this farang has such passion for my national food. All the dishes that I saw here that he made seem authentic just like what you would see in Thailand. Truly appetising indeed. Salute to the MAN!
He just wanted to steal your recipes so he could get famous and rich.
@@JH-dl6vu what the hell is up with this guy lolllll
Cherry E Bright I’ve eaten at the ny location. I would say genuine was an understatement. The cocktails were incredible too.
I am so happy that you are happy. Please tell your relatives that many of us here in the west - since decades ago - are dying to try new things. Even before the instagram-foodies. We CAN eat hot. We just have to get used to it, and we are willing to. At the end of the day; If it tastes good, we will come back for more. We are all human after all.
Much love to you, sister.
@@JH-dl6vu who hurt you?
Everytime I feel that I'm losing my track and motivation to keep doing whatever I'm doing (even though I most of the time don't enjoy the outcomes of my proffesional choices) I watch this video and get totally inspired about my future projects and what I want to do in the future with my life. Definitively one of the best youtube documentaries ever.
Me too! I come back to this again and again.
I'm Thai and I really respect Andy. I want to say thank you Andy for creating opportunity for people who never been in Thailand or Thai people who live there and miss Thailand to eat the original Thai foods to love Thai foods like I do love.
ขอบคุณครับแอนดี้ (^/\^)
Most Thai cooks won't even go as far as Andy in making their food. This man just really gets to the roots of Thai cuisine. Thai food gets really complicated to make just one dish if you try to be authentic.
Thank you chef Andy for spreading good food.
I guess that's why most places that do food in Thailand focus on one thing.
+Chang's Piano and Stuff Exactly. Which is really cool by me. Will try the Pok Pok in NYC.
Do you guys think he will open back up? I’ve been missing Pok Pok something fierce? Need fish sauce wings! Guess I’m going to have to make them myself.
I can listen to Nong talk all day. 😊
RIP pok pok. I like that he's just vibing on a farm in Chiang Mai now tho. The endgame he was aiming for
For clarification about the song at the very end. That's the song from North Eastern of Thailand (we called it 'Isan region'). The genre of the song is regional folk called 'Loong Toong or Mor Lam'. The lyrics is about inviting people to eat Thai spicy papaya salad named 'Som Tum'.
Soul and funk music from Thailand during the 60s and 70s was the shit
No one cares
My favorite Munchies video, a true inspiration for cooking.

Yes, would be great if Munchies made more of these style of docus.
I went to Pok Pok Phat Thai in NYC on bourdain's recommendation and it blew my fucking mind. I didn't think we could possibly make thai food that good in the states.
just wait until you visit Thailand ;) from kaeng tai pla and moo hong in the south to the sundried moo dad daew in isaan to sai oua in the north... Pok Pok is delicious but barely scratches the surface. which is in itself telling....
I wish Munchies did more long-form documentaries featuring dudes like this.
This video is on par with "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" Very well done.
from Bangkok and found this such an inspirational documentary! Thanks to Andy for giving Thai food a voice in USA. Im now trying my way opening a restaurant here in bkk with a dream of opening branches abroad. hope one day i meet and have a chat with you at Pok Pok.
Omg, you actually went to the fresh market near my house, in Chiangmai.
I really love cooking though, was thinking about working for your restaurant :D

this is by far the best episode of munchies yet. big propz to the director and producer on this.
Andy Ricker reminds me of a couple of Dutch boys who opened up an authentic Indonesian restaurant in Napier, NZ with a similar kind of obsession, home made chilli paste, home made soy sauce, everything home made and fresh. He might've been there too.
what's the restaurant called? sounds interesting, might wana check it out.
www . restaurant indonesia . co . nz
Not sure about now though, seems like the owners have changed.
As a farang currently living in Thailand, I really enjoyed watching this. Khob Khun KA!
Great to see. This guy and David Thompson have really pioneered getting 'jing jing' Thai food to the masses. More power to you mate
waited forever for this...and it didn't disappoint...

Brilliant documentary!
I'm definitely inspired by his vision and passion. When I went to Pok Pok in NYC, I felt that this was different from other Thai food joints I've been to
Great video. I want to go to Pok Pok! Authentic Thai food is awesome, can't wait to go back to Thailand.
Great documentary!
I love this video.
WOW i am Thai and i can say just for watching it the real Thai flavor is coming out! so impressing that you can get those ingrediants COMPLETED! Even some Thai cookers can't get them. Many of Thai restaurat abroad change the food's taste since they can't get those ingrediants and to make it comfortable for people in those country to eat. Look! you are 100% foreigner but you can get the real taste and ingrediants! AMAZING! And thanks for loving our food :)
As a kid who is lao and thai im glad to see there are foreigners who can enjoy our culture and im super happy to see this documentary
Great message
I love this episode!
This was so enjoyable. Killer content. Andy is so inspiring.
Love watching these videos :)
Such an amazing documentary!! Vice kills it everytime
Except the "people who just had sex" docs lol
RonnybearXC
right :D
RonnybearXC Hahahha i find some of them amusing haha but that one with the bitch who cooks straight shit i think its called "Girl eats Food" that is complete shit
I worked in kitchens too, and have some addictive personalty traits and into the same thing. Ive also started hating kitchens recently, went to friends house after work, and he had been working in kitchens for 10 years. He had a beautiful song he wrote, and I just remember one line 'Eviction, addiction, slaving away in a kitchen'
Wow awesome. This is one of the best channels on TH-cam by far.
