  • The Lenovo Y740 is a popular gaming laptop, but why is that the case? Let’s find out everything about it in this detailed review to help you decide if it’s a laptop you should consider buying. I'm testing the 17 inch version here, which has a few differences over the 15 inch model.

    While working on this review but after I finished testing, Lenovo released a new BIOS update that notes it improves fan cooling function: support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds506181 from the few people I've spoken with who own the Y740 so far it doesn't seem like this makes too much difference, and still doesn't add manual fan control.

      I’ll stick with the old bios. Especially since I get 82 FPS average on Division 2 after OC on the gpu and CPU undervolt. Don’t want to ruin that.

      I own the 740 15 inch. Even though you can not max fans anymore, the new bios has improved the fan curves and led to better overall temps when gaming and performing high demand tasks. This is on 1.10 bios though. 1.09 was however hot garbage. I believe you would get vastly different results on 1.10, which I can prove with my own benchmarks

    The reason I chose the Legion specifically, is because it looks like a high end laptop. I can use it for gaming and work. Most gaming machines just scream "I game 24/7 and breathe Mountain Dew" and I don't want that. This looks classy and modern. Turn off the fancy lights and it passes as a business laptop. I want to be able to take this thing to a work meeting, hook it up, do a presentation and then go home and mess around in games in ultra high definition.

    I genuinely love the fact that you mention if the laptop has optimus or not, and if it is switchable.
    Some things like shadowplay/OBS aren't perfectly compatible with optimus. For example, I can't record my desktop or anything that isn't being explicitly rendered with the nvidia gpu with either if I want to leverage NVENC as the encoder. I've even had issues using the other standard encoders.
    That and insanely high framerate (1000+fps) games (osu!) have compatibility issues with optimus.
    For these reasons, plus the fact that a desktop isn't portable, I am looking for a non-optimus/switchable laptop and these reviews are a godsend.
    Thanks for going in-depth with the laptops.
    I'll also throw in a suggestion, check what video card the video ports (DP, HDMI) are connected to. This is important if you want to use an Oculus Rift S headset or avoid optimus, the Rift S won't work with ports that are connected via optimus/intel GPU. One way to check check this is to go to the NVIDIA control panel and look at the "Set PhysX Configuration" menu, it has a visual overview of the connections.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers! Yes I have wanted to add testing what the ports are connected to, I have just forgotten to add it in with the last few videos, and I guess I always assume they must be connected to the Nvidia GPU because to me at least it seems silly to connect them to the Intel GPU, though it does of course happen.

      @@JarrodsTech It absolutely is silly. However during the launch of the Rift S there were a lot of disappointed laptop users who had to return their VR unit due to this, at least in the Oculus subreddit.

    Haven't seen anyone talk about this at all in their Y740 review, but it's something to consider. When you have headphones plugged in and the fans are running at max speed, at lower volumes you can hear a low humming noise quite audibly in the background. I think because it's related to the fans there's nothing you can do about it unfortunately. Otherwise, it's a fantastic laptop.

I purchased the alienware m15 (i7 950h, rtx 2060) last week.... It will be sent back tomm if it doesn't set the box on fire first. CPU runs 100c pretty much all the time while gaming. Lenovo has a similar deal on y740 (i7 950h, rtx 2070 max q), I'm hoping you could offer your opinion on whether or not I pull the trigger on that deal or not? I dont want to get that "burned again". I realize all these things run fairly hot and prefer to have something that works right out of the box! TIA

      Thanks! Temperature is shown in this video but from memory very few machines allow thermals to run up to 100c, most cap at 90 or 95, so performance may be lower as this triggers thermal throttling however it's required if you want cooler, just depends what the preference is. Alienware/dell are typically hot and do have that higher than usual 100c limit

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, yeah the brick is pretty annoying. I recently went on a trip with the Y540 and it has the exact same brick, felt like it took up too much bad space, so I guess depends on if space is a limitation when you need to take it places. Personally even a 2070 max-q is overkill for me and what I do, so I wouldn't bother paying more. As you can see in the game performance comparison graphs in this video, 2080 max-q is fine, but 2070 max-q still gives more than acceptable performance in modern games at max settings, so personal preference. Even smaller difference between those CPUs.

Now im thinking of buying the Y740 with 17" 144hz Gsync, 16gb ram, 2070 MaxQ but the only thing stopping me now is what I read on Lenovo forums. They removed the max fan feature from latest bios update hence thermal issues. Not having the max fan feature shouldnt be an issue and go for it? Or go for something else like ROG Scar III?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lack of user controllable max fan speed is a bit of a let down, scar III has lower CPU power limit so will perform worse in CPU bound tasks, but the GPU isn't max-q, so if you're using it for games at max settings that will actually utilise the graphics well then it could be better.

While idle it is around 40-45 and sometimes goes up to 50-55. But, while gaming it is around 70-75 and rises sometimes to 80-95 and on a very few occasions to 95-100 degrees Celsius.

    One thing that pushes me back is how Lenovo does not specify SSD model and it depends on the configuration what you get.
    With Y540 1660ti you will get cheap WD SSD with poor spec, while top notch configs will get Samsung with several times better read/writes.
    You won't even know before you buy.

      I don't think any company specifies the SSD model, that just isn't generally a thing that I've noticed. This is why I always specify the model they use in my reviews.

      I don't sorry, never tested that config, though if it's same wattage as the 2070 here maybe not all that much difference.

    Jarrod, great content like always. Thank you. I wanted to get your opinion between the Y740 15" screen with a RTX 2060 versus the MSI GS65 Stealth with a GTX 1660ti. They are both $1500 atm and sport i7-9750H.

      @@saimumislamrumi2183 That is the plan. I have been out of the computer game for a bit and just bought a GF65 recommend by a friend. I was not happy with it and returned it. I got myself considerably more educated on where things are now, components, etc. For my price range, I am happy with what both of these machines offered. Costco has good pricing on the Y740 for what is under the hood. I read a lot of positive things on the GS65 but unfamiliar with the brand. I have read negative things on Lenovo support but I tend to figure out a lot of things myself so fine with it. In my research, I have found a lot of buzz on new gen devices coming out soon. Despite catching up with the times, I like to stay open to feedback from people that have had their ears to ground longer than me lol
