  • The Lenovo Legion Y740 is available in both a 15" (up to RTX 2070 Max Q) and 17" models (up to RTX 2080 Max Q). In June Lenovo is rumoured to launch a 15" RTX 2080 max Q model.
    Dell has updated their G series with 9th Gen CPUs. Also available in 15" and 17" models. The 15" G7 is available up to a RTX 2080 Max Q and an OLED model will be available soon.
    Here I compare the 15" Y740 against the 15" Dell G7, both with an i7 8750h COU, 2 x 8GB RAM and a RTX 2070 MQ Graphics.

    Just a heads up. I should have mentioned it in my video. I tested using max fans because I noticed that more power went to the GPU compared to auto fan, with negligible increase in thermals.

      @@azorelnero5568 it performs great in both. The CPU maintains a good boost clock, even better when undervolted. The best I have seen for an 8750h. The GPU runs cool and fast. With max fans it allows it to use upto 101w and perform close to the regular 2070 or 2080 max Q.

    Excellent video comparison and review! Very informative.
    I have a question in regards to the longevity of the Y740. Firstly, I apologize for my English as it isn't my first language.
    The Y740 is perfect to me in almost every way (I want to use it with my Wacom Cintiq 16 and occasional gaming) but, a lot of people have valid concerns about the heat issue it has and they worry if that will cause bigger problems with the laptop's lifespan, and I share that worry. I need a laptop that can last at least 5 years as I unfortunately cannot afford to buy another one so soon if this laptop breaks. So longevity is important to me.
    However, I've also seen people complain about other laptops and how they break after a year of usage due to the unmanageable heat and then say that the Legion Y740 is much more preferred... despite the latter also having heat issues. Does this mean that Y740 heat issues aren't as bad as with others laptops and that it could possibly have a better lifespan down the road?
    I admit I'm not that tech savvy haha, so I hope this question wasn't taxing to read.
    Thank you in advance, hope you have a good week!

    Great video! It's actually one of the videos that helped me lean into my purchase of the y740. I will say that I just picked one up in March of 2020 and I got a unit that had practically NO backlight bleed, only a very small cloud in the lower mid right, and it really only becomes visible when you have the brightness turned up past 80 percent or so, so that definitely varies from unit to unit. I love this computer and I'm so glad I picked it up over the Dell, which I have heard so many negative things about.

However I got the wrong version with just 60hrz panel which is quite bad with backlight bleed in the bottom corners of the screen. I am about to exchange this model to the one with 144hrz panel (covered by warranty) that is better according to reviews, however it may warry. Regarding heat, I noticed that on turbo boost it throttles at around 90C on max setting in DOOM eternal, but it does not effect gaming. At least in my case. I did undervolting to minus 115.2 in throttlestop app and it works well, but this is something to keep in mind. Other that that, it works quiet
      and cool enough (around 40C- sometimes 50C I believe, per info from throttlestop app) when working with chrome, blender, watching 4k movies. I hope this helps. Additionally I was thinking about Lenovo Y740.

    You should have pointed out that the Y740 17" has a 76Wh battery, while the 15" model has the smaller one, although I do not know if the battery life is any better considering it's likely meant to compensate for the larger screen. However, customer service has confirmed that the batteries are interchangeable despite the size difference; you can buy a battery by itself and install the larger one from the 17" into the 15".

I did experiment with undervolting the GPU but it had negligable effect on the CPU temperature. The GPU was running really cool already. Setting the GPU clock rate at 1515 MHz got rid of the power Throttle but performance was the same.

    Hi Stephen!
    As far as I see, at least on our market (Russia), Y740 is the only notebook model which you can choose with i5 8300 and RTX 2070. It would be interesting to see if a weaker CPU (than i7 8750) can destroy the benefit in the performance of the powerful GPU and if such a combo (obviously cheaper) makes sense.
    Do you plan to test some i5 8300/RTX machines?

    Couple of other things on the G7 17 inch models that buyers should be aware of. (mine is the 7790 with the 8750h)
    1) The spacebar is a bit lazy. You need to select it closer to the middle or it won't register. Now, this is probably due to my being used to a mechanical keyboard, so it's a training issue. Thought my spacebar was broke at first!
    2) The new Dell design, with the aft lip extending past the display. This added depth creates a real PITA finding a TSA approved laptop backpack to accommodate it. I managed to locate a Swiss one from Amazon (barely fits). One could probably buy the rectangular box looking types, but it more looks like you're a starship trooper radio man on patrol ! Plus it's a dead giveaway you're carrying an expensive lappy!
    But a question for you. Mine of course came with single channel memory. Dell has a part number for an additional model albeit a horribly expensive price. Amazon has the part number, 1 Module for Dell, the other for Alienware. Both with the exact same part number but 2 totally different prices. My theory is that they have the huge markup due to their price on their site, and that the alienware module would pair nicely with my dell module. Thoughts?

    • @DarkOneXOfficial
      @DarkOneXOfficial 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep on the spacebar I thought mine was broken too, I actually had a Dell tech reach out to me on Reddit wanting to assist but as I tested the spacebar more I just realized I think it's just built crappy as it works fine in mid sections just left or right too far and you have to hit it harder so don't think they could fix it with a support ticket. I also had bought a 2nd 16GB stick to put into mine before I even had the laptop in hand, not sure why they and seemingly many other vendors are selling these with single sticks when it's so detrimental to performance.
      *edit - crap they put the new 9th gen CPUs in them now, and they come with dual channel ram, and Ebates is giving 15% cashback on them today, omfg I'm so fuming now. My return period just expired too like last week, grrrrrrr!!!!!

    Is it the vantage software setup allowing this power pull to 90 watts?

      I think that is a great deal on the Dell G7. The 8750h on the Y740 performs well but I expect the 9750h on the G7 to go head to head with it now. Of course, you are getting the 60wh battery on the G7, which is a shame. At least on the Y740 you get Gsync. Its a tough call. I think the Gysnc would sway it for me. If the G7 had the 90wh battery that may have swung it in its favour.

I'm on the hunt for an affordable video editing laptop ($750-$1000) with decent performance/thermals. It seems you usually focus on gaming bang for the buck, but your thoughts on this MSI PS63? Any other recent deals come to mind? Thanks! Best of luck with the channel.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris ! The PS63 modern was nice in that it was very portable with great battery life. Screen 95% sRGB , I would get the 8th gen U processor over the 10th gen personally as it can be tweaked to run faster than the 10th gen ones. Brightness is not super great though.
      If you are open to a 17" laptop then the Nitro 5 with the 9300h/GTX 1650 is a solider performer - sure its cheaper in build but the panel is nice and bright , 92%sRGB. The MSI GF75 thin was also very nice - small bottom chin and 94% sRGB , 1020:1 contrast and 320 nits, not as bright as the Nitro but its a great laptop.
      How about the DELL XPS 15 ? They have the i5 9300h / GTX 1650 1080p 500 Nit certified refurbished on their Outlet store for $1011. I have bought their certified refurbs before and they are great: dell.to/2KcVfB1

I'm not sure for the webcam on top of the screen however it's confirmed it will have the latest Intel 9th gen and a numeric keypad. Any recommendations I feel like the 1660 ti is the sweetspot for "budget" oriented laptops. ive seen an HP omen with a 9750 and 1660ti, 256 gb 2x 8gb. for 1099.99. Im really considering returning my asus fx505, bc its connection to wifi is lacking, though my connection in general may be insufficient. I now want to consider a 6 core intel instead of the ryzen 7 as well as you've proven its 10% increase via the acer benchmark. though id like to run some lesser games while I stream shows/movies via hdmi. so im thinking the ryzen 7 could possibly be better for this scenario. Which is hard to test/compare I guess. Granted windows crawl to support ryzen thoroughly as well. 144hz screens also support g-sync which sounds like a better panel as well

      @@OWNORDISOWNyeah im definitely eying that omen 15 with the rtx and 512 nvme for 1200, With the return/exchange of my fx505. Going to download the 1903 update to test if its any improvement, bc the wifi keeps dropping as well. Theres also an MSI GL63 with 1 full tb of ssd, I hope its a single nvme instead of 2x 512. But only time will tell. For 1099....and a 1660ti. I find that if I can lower the voltage of the intel cpu I can slightly OC the 1660 ti, to perform at rtx levels. Though the 2060. v 1660ti prompts interesting comparison at 1080p exclusively. Esp since rtx on is a huge performance drop.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The G7 is 20mm thick and the G5 is about 23mm, same as the Y740. From a performance per $ the Y740 is the clear winner in my book. It runs cooler too. The main things going for the G7 is thunderbolt 3 and bigger battery, but it has no Gsync. If the Y740 had a bigger battery and perhaps an SD card reader that would be great. Out of all the RTX laptops I have tried I think the Y740 makes the most sense unless you really need a longer run time, in which case the G7 is a great option. I have always liked the Razer laptops and if you can find an Aero 15 with RTX at a decent price I think that is the most well rounded laptop because of its big battery, decent performance, 2 x m.2 slots x UHS 2 SD card reader and light weight.

The odd spike here or there is fine. The fans will only have so many revolutions in them but I have had laptops that have been on every day for at least 5 years and they kept chugging along. • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jack! TE Aero 15 is a very nice laptop and has everything I would want in one. It's small and light, UHS 2 SD card reader and good panel so it's good for people who take lots of photos or videos, Ethernet port for those that want to stream, decent storage with 2 m.2 slots and it is easy to get into and upgrade or repaste. The GS65 still uses pretty thin Guage aluminum so doesn't feel as premium but I did like the one I had, it cooled better than the Aero 15 but it's big drawback is the inverted motherboard which is a royal pain to remove and upgrade (I did so on my Triton 500). Still, I think it now comes with more RAM and storage.
      The Y740 is worse in battery life and portability, so if they are your main factors then I would go with the Aero 15 probably. But given I still got 4 hours on the Lenovo with a quick charge it's still fine for toting about. And there is no question that it is as fast as the 2080MQ GS65 and Aero 15 at a fraction of the price.

    Any idea why the dell G7 performs so badly in some test ? I'm in the market for a laptop and unfortunately the lenovo Y740 is not available here nor do they provide international warranty leaving the G7 as my only choice. Also does the performance of the G7 improve after the UV you applied in its review ?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's because the G7 uses the 80w GPU whilst the Y740 pushes up to 101 W on its 2070 MQ when max fan is enabled. This allows the GPU to maintain a higher boost clock as its not as power limited. You can overclock the G7 GPU a bit and that helps but its still restrained with less power. Increasing the CPU clock by reducing its power and thermal throttle helps mainly in CPU crunching tasks, not so much in games.

    I wish reviewers would tell/show us what the price of reviewed items are in other regions, namely the UK and Europe. It's all well and good saying a piece of tech is good value, but that's no good to a large chunk of your audience if they find it's not such good value in their region. I often find 'good value' items end up actually being very expensive here in the UK, and I know it's a similar story in Australia.

    The G-sync really helps to increase the performance of the RTX GPU by 8-10% as it bypasses the Intel integrated GPU and projects directly onto the screen. I am not sure why there are a lot of manufacturers that they do not have G-sync on their $2000 gaming laptop. As such the performance of the RTX GPU is being compromised. In this video you can see clearly that a 100% G-sync RTX2070 maxq can match a 90% non-G-sync RTX2080 maxq.
