  • Its the first day of Spring and the weather in SC is gorgeous. I needed a full size Shortleaf Pine for my pine tree watercolor sketchbook page, so a plein air session out in my yard was in order. Follow along as I discuss painting this tree en plein air. I'm also field testing the Etchr Slate satchel, the Portable Painter and a previously unused set of Maimeri Blu watercolors. More thoughts on all those products in a future vlog.
    Maimeri Blu Color Palette:

    Interesting approach, never thought about doing the foliage first and adding the trunk and branches later. Tried this quickly and it does make painting a tree easier and looking more realistic. Hard to explain but the tree looks less "forced" and more natural.
    A Great Tip - thanks

      In this case I knew where I wanted the bottom of the tree on the page. I've actually painted trees in just about every order imaginable but this does seem to work well. Thanks!

    OK, after finishing this video the other day, I went forth to look for some pines. In Oklahoma there are not that many where I live. I need to go a bit further to the southeast. However, I did find a few that landscaped a neighborhood. Used a pen instead of my watercolor palette in that time was not on my side. I put in the leaves/needles where they pretty much needed to be and then went back to put in the trunks and limbs. Instead of wood fencing and housing I used large rocks and turned it into a mountain scene. Definitely looked better than reality in this case. It went so much faster than normal and actually looked a lot more ‘correct’. In my humble opinion great teaching leads to a pretty good sketch. -OkieSketcher1949😊

    I love how you set up your stuff on the tripod! Is there any interest (besides me) that would like to see your Plein Aire setup in better light? I’m interested in seeing how you attach the book and the perfect painter palette to the case. I would also like to see more instruction on how you “loose paint” as this is more my skill set. Thanks again for another great video!

    White pines, as most all pines, seem to have a tangled ‘leaves’ vs. stems and branches relationship. The way you have just demonstrated seems to be a good work around. Get the ‘leaves’ in first and them put in the branches. This should also work well with oaks, elms, plums, etc. Any chance of putting together a video of you painting an oak with lots of leaves and branches? -OkieSketcher1949

    Just found your channel. Amazing work. I also like the cloud for reference. I admire watercolor artists. I have attempted myself with minimum success. I will try some of your tips.
    Could it be my lack quality paper and brushes, be the reason I do not get the results I was hoping for?

    Dear Sir: you always give the paint colors you are using and I know it would be so much trouble to say where you are using those color, or what you're mixing but that would be really interesting and soooo helpful. I always enjoy the palettes you use but those beautiful muted colors I wonder how you derive them. A video about color mixing for different trees and grasses would be really great. I can see you mixed everyone of those greens as you didn't list any greens on the site.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greens are primarily muted with reds. I may mix the greens (Ultramarine and Indian yellow make a nice muted green) or take an existing green like phthalo and mute it with red. You can also mute greens with neutral tint. The exact colors I've used is not that important. Take your palette and experiment with your colors. Come up with some of your own lovely mixtures by getting to know your colors well and trying them with each other. It's the best way to learn mixing.

      Thanks Mark! It probably looked more annoying on camera than it actually was on location. I notice the camera kept changing exposure and that bothered me about the video. Part of the challenges of working outdoors. Find that perfect angle and there is almost always some drawback. Sigh. Glad it inspired, heres hoping you get a sooner than later thaw. Brrrr!

    Beautiful work, as always! What type of pen did you use for your calligraphy - I love the added detail of the calligraphy with the paintings.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its pretty weird actually but its a ballpoint pen. Mainly because a pointed pen calligraphy nib does not do well on textured paper. If you use a bold ball-point pen you can get the thick thin strokes by lifting and bearing down just like the dip nib.

    • @leanneland
      @leanneland 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Mind of Watercolor Wow, I wasn’t expecting you to say it was a ballpoint pen but that makes sense with the nib more likely to catch on the textured paper. I’ll have to give that a try, thank you! :)

    Ok, so just remember you have plenty of fans who are heading into autumn now on the other side of the world! Luckily, because of climate change (?), we’re picking chestnuts AND having 30 degree (C) days. Gotta do your watercolour plein air fast around here, or the warm wind dries out the paper in seconds! Thanks for this great tutorial, from Glenlyon, Australia (in case your grandkids are tracking your far-flung fans on a map!).

    Wow Steve this page tured out just so lovely. Pine trees are so dynamic when you look closely. We're enjoying a very wet Autumn here in Eastern Australia. The sun was out this morning though and I wish you could have heard my 6 year old daughter urging me to go out into the yard with her and hunt for fungi to sketch! She packed our bag with her sketchpad, pencil, guidebook and rubber gloves for examining. We found 2 types and identified them with a guide that is beautifully illustrated with watercolours. I wonder if your beautiful botanical art could one day feature in a guide of your area.🤔😁A life goal, perhaps?

    Great video, Steve, your sketchbook is a work of art in itself. Do you keep another book for the rough stuff (concepts, experiments and the like)? If so I think it would be very useful to have a peek..

      I have a couple of what I call a doodle books. I don't show that often. Just for me working out problems and making visual notes.

    Love it! Thanks for the Portable Painter tip with the Etchr products. I have the satchel, not the slate, but looks like it just might work for me too! Cheers Steve!

    I like that you added the text, explaining a bit about the pine. Also the combination of paintings on one page is very nice. Did you plan at the start to paint the 3 different views, or did the page evolve as you worked on it?

      A little of both. I knew I wanted all those elements but wasn't sure where i wanted them or exactly what they would look like when I did them.
