- You Café, I Café, we all Pousse-Café!
So what is a Pousse-Café? A layered shooter? Far from it. I would imagine if you shoot one of these back it would tastes pretty ghastly. A Pousse-Café is a multicoloured, layered drink that was very popular in the mid-1800s and was more than likely invented in France, but nobody really knows for sure. This layered cocktail was meant to be taken after a meal, supposedly to remove the taste of dinner or tobacco or whatever is going on in your mouth at the time. A modern day Pousse-Café doesn't really have a set combination of liquor that you must use. You can use whatever you want as long as you know the density of the spirits and liqueurs you're layering. If you have the patience to make one, it makes a great after dinner sipper. Join me this episode and I'll show you how to make one and then show you how you're supposed to drink it! Cheers!

Just when you think you know it all, Bruce comes along and schools you! That’s why you’re the best in the biz. This is a fun looking cocktail. I love the idea of a different spirit with each sip. I’m gonna experiment with this bad boy. Cheers Bruce! 🥃
Could you make one in 60 second? No shaking or stirring, soo super easy ;)
@@stephane.foisy.186 you know it’s actually possible. I think I’m gonna give it a try at some point. 🤔
Hey Vino! Thanks for the kind words!
Looking forward to this one for sure! I always wonder if you’re gonna meet the challenge and make em on time. Try it!!
Bruce, this had got to be one of most interesting cocktails I've ever seen!!! BRAVO!!!
Thanks Tim. Hope you give it a try.
When you made them back in the 80s you should have called it a “Bruce Café”
Ha .. ya I should have. Thanks for tuning in. Cheers
That is a stunning drink!!!
Heck ya it is. Give it a go!!
That was really interesting. Great history.
Thanks for tuning in Sam.
I was never very good at layered cocktails but damn this would be a good way to practice and probably cry.
Practice makes perfect! Give it a go.
I first came across the Pousse-cafe drink in the Bob Hope movie, My Favorite Blonde. At around the 2:32 mark, the female lead, Madeleine Carroll, pours herself a Pousse-cafe in a bar on an ocean liner.
Probably one of the coolest drinks you've made. You truly are a master mixologist.
Thanks Zachary! Cheers
fantastic production quality and a lovely voice, what a treat
Thanks for noticing! We have a lot of fun.
What a spectacular cocktail, Bruce! Amazing! I loved all the history! This is one heck of a drink and I definitely want to have some fun and give it a try! Sipping each layer, individually, sounds fabulous. This is a very interesting invention!! :-) You rock Bruce!
Thanks Christine! Hope you give it a try!
Heyy Brucie!! Love the videos, the history, and the Booze! Fun to watch and Enjoy making cocktails along with you. Keep the videos coming Dude! :-) Cheers from the UK
You got it. New episode releasing real soon. Stay tuned.
this channel is a national treasure. very entertaining! love it
Thanks! I should put that on a tshirt. I like it. Ha. Thanks for the kind words.
Here in southern Germany pretty much in the middle of nowhere we have a small bar that actually serves pousse cafes (they’ve been doing since the 80s just like you)
I‘ve always wondered where it came from and your video was so much fun to watch! 😍 thanks!!
That sounds fab! I wanna go there.
Sent here by "How to Drink". Glad I did! You are super fun!
Glad you found me! Keep checking back, lots more videos to come.
The Wonka Everlasting Gobstopper of drinks. Kudos!
It sure is! Give it a try.
That was maybe the most layers stacked on top of each other I have seen in a drink. It looks amazing tip of the hat to you sir!
Thank you! Hope you give it a go. It’s worth the effort.
Aw. Flaming Flamingo?
I expected the name change to be, like, a Pousse Flambe!
Or how 'bout a Bruce Cafe? 😆
Great suggestions 😂
Thanks Bruce for clarifying the pronunciation. I had it all wrong 😉 Great video as always!
How were you saying it? Ha.. don’t tell me. 😂
@@BarTalkCocktails 😁 oh you can figure it out !! I was waiting on you to say “ and shake it like a Pousse! “!
When you get ready to go on tour, be sure and come to the states! Got the perfect place lined up!
Bruce. You are a a legend! Thank you for all you and the team do yo share you memories and the history behind each cocktail. You’re the best!
Thanks! We try.
That is absolutely amazing pouring. Two huge thumbs up to you!
Thanks for tuning in!
Great time watching this, thank you Bruce
Thank you for watching! Keep checking back lots more on the way.
I really appreciate the effort you put into these Bruce.
Thanks John! We have a lot of fun making these episodes. Glad it shows.
That's beautiful!!👍
WoW that looked fun. I think this is a great (though laborious) for a fun after dinner coffee.. Thanks for another great video! NO way the horse head and the zombie t-shirt that is so AWESOME!!!
Yes laborious! But well worth it.
I can't believe not more views. This is a blast! I love the history and the fact that chase with my favorite beverage....COFFEE!!!!!
Spread the good word and share me with your friends! Cheers
I remember reading about this drink in a science book discussing specific gravity of liquids. I was 12 and wanted to try one. that was 30 something years ago
That’s neat, sounds like it was a good science class... It’s never too late, give it a go!
I thank the editors just as much as the star himself, fantastic content.
Thanks! The editor is actually my nephew... He does a marvellous job making me look marvellous! Ha.
Absolutely stunning Bruce.
Thanks David!
always wanted to try this drink, super unique and fun
Great video Bruce and what an amazing cocktail! It’ll be like a scavenger hunt to find some of the ingredients 😀
It’ll be worth it!
Very nice cocktail. As a French I didn't know it. What I called a pousse Cafe is a glass of calva or Cognac or armagnac... So good after meal... 👍👍👍👍
Interesting! Thanks for sharing that. Cheers Pascal!
This, and several other drinks are featured in the game, "Catherine". Glad to see that they are actual drinks.
Hope you give it a go!
epic and full of history
That’s me. Ha
Bonjour! Very interesting looking drink.
Thanks Tara!
Love this guy
Thanks! 😎
You have such magik hands! Lovely drink! 🍸
Thanks Anni! Cheers
Amazing job.
Thanks!
Some serious pouring skills bruce! I'd imagine this would be a PAIN if a group ordered a couple rounds...
You got that right! Well worth it though.
Bruce, you never disappoint!!!! Great fun qaulity content!!!!!!!
I try! Thanks for tuning in. Cheers
I always wanted one of these but never had the bar to do it myself and never been to a bar that even knew what it was. Saw a picture of it when I was a teenager in some old bar book, really neat to see one actually being made.
It’s definitely a pain in the ass to make, well worth it though.
this guy is so nice. here's my like. and thanks for the subtitles in portuguese. =)
You’re welcome. Maybe one day I can do an episode all in Portuguese.
A mina producer é portuguesa e está teaching eu portugues.
I hope I said that right. Ha I still have a long way to go.
This guy rules.
He sure does. Ha
Bonjour! You are awesome. Period!
Merci!!
I actually tried making one of these and its really good. A bit finicky to get right though. The history was awesome as usual.
The hat was also on point!
It’s finicky for sure but worth it. There are quite a few cocktails you’ve covered that are on my to-do list to try. Need more hours in the day! And another liver. Ha
Dude, I don't drink, and I'm binge watching your videos anyways, hehe... Good, entertaining, informative content!
Thanks! Lots of history to catch up on even if you don’t drink. Can’t go wrong.
Very interesting cocktail.
Give it a go!
Wonderful I'll have to make it this weekend
Did you make it?
@@BarTalkCocktails yes it was great with an espresso on Friday after dinner
😋
Fabulous!! FYI, it would have been GREAT if you wore a light shirt and had a white or light background so we could really appreciate the colors. The black behind the drink did not show off the beauty of the drink. But I want to try this!! THank you.
Awesome
Thanks for tuning in!
Hey Bruce, it’s been a long time since you made a simply syrup video, you should do a peach syrup recipe !! I would love to see that
When peaches are back in season I will definitely make peach syrup. You'll have to wait as May is the beginning of the peach season. The top months though, here where I live are July and August. I hope you're a patient man, Charles because we want to use the sweetest peaches available. Cheers, Thanks for the suggestion.
Hard to do drink (because of the technique of gravity of each drink,..heh.. Came over from H2D, and had fun. Thanks Bruce.
Glad you found me! Keep checking back.
You are my idol.
Surely you can do better. Ha! Much appreciated 😂
Kinda makes you wanna start a small coffee shop bar that specialises in selling pousse cafes and coffee and has odd mismatched furniture and obscure jazz 45's playing
I’ll second that
I like Bushmills Irish ☘️ whiskey in my coffee. Start the day out right! 🤫😁
Can’t argue with that. Ha!
Misspelled pouse as in inch. In French one inch is a pouce with a c. Very interesting and informative video.
In a perfect world, I wouldn't need to know how to spell. I have a hard enough time with English, let alone French. Ha. Glad you're enjoying the show. Cheers, Louise.
Thats fancy ass looking drink, never had anything layered like that.
Hope you give it a go Alex, it’s worth it.
This is like a fancy vodka Red Bull from decades past
This looks super interesting! Does flaming it make a difference in terms of the taste??
Flaming doesn't really change much in the way of flavour as only the top layer is burning. Also, you shouldn't let it burn too long. It's mostly for show, although it does heat up that top layer which is already warm due to the high alcohol content. Cheers!
Salud🍻 from mexico
Salud Jorge! Thank you for the continued support.
Another drinking channel I watch did a riff on this for the Avengers films where each color was the color of an Infinity Stone. He DID shoot all back and said it tasted horrible.
If only he had Bruce to show him how to drink a layered cocktail.
Who knows, maybe the Infinity Stone cocktail will end up on the wheel of horrible drinks.
I’ll have to search for that. Sounds like an interesting take.
Pousse with two ss is my favorite 😉😏
😜
This reminds me of a fictional cocktail from Star Wars called "A Walk in the Philopean Forest"
Hm, I don’t recall that. 🤔
@@BarTalkCocktails It came from the expanded universe, and was supposedly served on board the Death Star.
I make Grasshoppers Pousse Cafe style
Interesting!
pousse-cafe sounds like a bar where...
😂
Can you do the Sazerac?😁
Thanks for the suggestion!
Who knew they were doing layered shots back in the 1850s?
What else did they have to do? Ha
By the time you drink it all. You would have to be banged up.
They should have named the flaming flamingo the Bruce caf
Ha. I wish
Last time I was this early my wife said it was okay but I still had a job to finish...
Happy wife happy life! Ha 😜
First :)
You win the chance to make this fabulous drink! It’s worth the effort! Do it!
Basically a Bartender's nightmare. If anyone asks for this I'm just going to say NO.
I know right! I wouldn’t be recommending them to customers. Ha
2nd
Early bird gets the worm... Second mouse gets the cheese. Cheers!
5:40 Oh no you're not supposed to plunge like that you're just meant to use the thing like a filter. That's what James Hoffman said he went to the coffee olympics or something. th-cam.com/video/st571DYYTR8/w-d-xo.html
Thanks, Hugh. Now I know. I'm going to try his coffee brewing technique tonight.
A glass of multi colored syrup
But it’s good syrup. Ha
