A tale of 2 Negronis - How to make the Negroni cocktail | BAR TALK & COCKTAILS

  • The Negroni. Probably one of the most famous classic cocktails has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years and is often debated as to where it came from. There is a lot of history on this so I delved pretty deep in research and came to the conclusion that I'm now more confused then ever.

    Another fantastic video Bruce, though I'm going to be honest I have tried 10 different types of Campari cocktails and I cannot seem to find one that I enjoy. Campari I want to make a staple of my home bar and I want to be able to make a drink with it, do you know of any other drinks that use Campari that aren't as bold in terms of the flavor of Campari yet aren't smothered by other Liquors or Mixers? As always Bruce cheers and hope to become loyal boozehound come November!

    • @blackimp
      @blackimp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Try the Jungle Bird or the El Imigrante. The easiest way to drink Campari is a Campari Testarossa (0,75oz. Vodka, 1,5oz. Campari, filled up with Tonic, Water).

    • @stephane.foisy.186
      @stephane.foisy.186 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @SpontImagoSoul you can try aperol as a stepping stone. Made by the same company and is sweeter.

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Neal! As Stephane Foisy suggested, Aperol could be a good stepping stone for you. It's not as bold or as strong as Campari. With its brilliant red/orange colour, it's intense with a tangerine zest aroma and herbal spicy notes. Smooth sweet tangerine is the taste along with a bitter herbal edge to balance. There are a lot of Campari recipes out there but, it doesn't mean you have to follow them to the letter. You could initially try a Negroni with less Campari or Aperol and build yourself up to the original recipe once you grow accustomed to its flavour. Campari is definitely an acquired taste. You'll eventually grow to enjoy it as much as I do.

  • @moderatedoomer2945
    @moderatedoomer2945 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Campari is very bitter straight but when it's diluted in soda, gin etc. it opens up and you can taste the sugar in it, along with the bitter elements. Along with the vermouth, there's plenty of sweetness.

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure Orson Welles meant the bitters from the Campari however, some additional bitters might take the Negroni to a new level. I'm a little bias though. I love bitters in way too many cocktails I drink. Ha!

    Which bitters do you prefer for most drinks? How do you feel about bitters in John Collins or Whiskey Sour

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love bitters. Angostura and Orange are among my favourites but, there are way too many in my collection to have to choose. It's a hard decision to make and sometimes it depends on the mood I'm in. As far as adding bitters to a John Collins or a Whiskey Sour, I think it would make a great addition to either of these classics.

    I drink whisky or rum, mainly neat, or sometimes with some water. I am not a fan of using ice in my drinks (takes up space that could be filled by booze). Do cocktails have to have ice?

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ice does two things to your cocktail. It cools it down and dilutes it to provide balance to the cocktail. And, dilution can be a good thing. Often, a little bit of water will actually open up some spirits, by accentuating some aromas and perhaps masking others. When it comes to ice, there are many variables - shape, size, and quantity. Is the ice hard or wet? Ice should never be an afterthought. It honestly deserves just as much attention as the spirits, bitters, fresh juices, or whatever else you’re putting into the drink. Whether your drink is served on the rocks or straight up, ice is an essential component of the cocktail experience. Cheers!

    I think the first story is most believable. It might be true that he wasn’t a count or a blood Negroni, but from what we know about him, he seems like he may have embellished his backstory without pause. The problems with the dates in the other versions of stories easily debunks them, while our drinking, cat loving, anthropologist, explorer seems like a likely cocktail inventor.

      Hey Bud! I hope all is well. Store vermouth the same way you would store wine. Keep it cool, dark and away from sunlight and heat. Once open, keep your vermouth in the fridge. It gets stale tasting if it sits out. Try to use it up within a month once opened. Cheers!

  • @c.waynebaker2778
    @c.waynebaker2778 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I must've done something wrong. I bought the three liquors shown (same brands) in the airline sized bottles, poured them into a glass since the recipe called for equal parts, and added the orange wedge. Then added Ice and stirred. It was absolutely the worst, most bitter drink I've ever had and it left a horrible aftertaste. Let my wife try it and she agreed so it wasn't just my taste buds. What the heck did I do wrong?

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably didn't do anything wrong. The Negroni is a somewhat bitter-style cocktail with equal parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. It's not for everyone. It's an acquired taste that develops over time. You could try re-balancing your ingredients to suit your palate. Possibly cut back the Campari to a 1/2 ounce. Also, you could try making a Negroni with Campari's less bitter cousin, Aperol. It's a good starting point to appreciate the bitter side of cocktails. It certainly is worth trying again. Cheers!

    Famiglia Negroni has shoddy record keeping and no honor. Conte Camillo Negroni was a matrilineal first cousin to Mr. Landor!

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're correct. Camillo’s recorded mother was Ada Savage Landor, believed to be the aunt of Arnold. That would make Camillo, his cousin. However this is yet to be accurately substantiated. The Negroni war will probably continue on forever. All I know is that the Negroni is the most delicious of bitter cocktails, and a perfect elixir for a summer evening. Negroni week this year is September 13-19, 2021. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
