J.P. WISER'S PRE-MIXED MANHATTANS - Bruce's Booze Review | Bar Talk & Cocktails

  • For my Birthday last year a good friend of mine gifted me a bottle of J.P. Wiser's pre-mixed Manhattan. Hmmmmm not so sure about this one. Could it be as good as the ones I make from scratch? I don’t know, I mean I’ve been making Manhattans for 45 years and it’s my favourite drink! So, this is going to be a very demanding, honest review. I thought I’d do a side-by-side taste test of a Manhattan made from scratch vs a pre-mixed one. Can the pre-mixed Manhattan cut it next to the real thing? Watch and find out!

    I may have to try it. I drink maybe one homemade cocktail a year, so not having to buy multiple bottles is a good deal for folks like me.

    For scratch allows you to use the bitters you have/want and can be an exotic version with fun unique bitters. Can be built quickly. Now that said one can make a freezer bottle Manhattan that are cold and ready to pour. 😋

    My wife's favorite drink, too. I usually make hers with bourbon, but on Sunday evening, it's a Ryehattan - which she now loves. The secret to a really good one (as with all drinks) is higher-quality ingredients. In this case, the vermouth and bitters make a world of difference.

    The “scratch” Manhattan is the nectar of the God’s. Top three cocktails for me. Jiffy Pop, not so much. 😅

    Nice review, Bruce and a very happy Saturday to you! I have always shied away from the premixes because they are usually too sweet for my taste, but I might give this one a shot after your review. Looking forward to more content from you!

    nice video, it would be a good series, if you test various premixed drinks and give your opinion.

    I don't know if this is everywhere or all of America; where I live all of the "cocktail" drinks you can buy in normal stores are a "malt beverage" meaning they filtered all of the taste out of some beer and then flavored it. So I figure mixing it with actual hard alcohol is illegal to sell in stores. You find things like this but it's "add your own gin/vodka/tequila".

    A bottle of Wiser's would certainly reduce the clutter in my bottom desk drawer.

    Bruce, what is your favorite Rye for a Manhattan? It is also my favourite and I am looking for a good new bottle of rye to try? Would you recommend a Canadian rye and which one?

      When it comes to making Manhattans, my go-to Canadian whisky is Forty Creek Barrel Select. It has a rich flavour profile that includes bold notes of vanilla, honey, and a hint of rye spice. This blend is crafted from individually aged grain whiskies made from rye, barley, and corn. The process of aging each whisky in seasoned ex-Bourbon barrels and new American White Oak gives it a full flavour profile and a smooth lingering finish. The best part is the price point. It works out to about $1.13 an ounce (CA).
      Cheers!

    Tell us your favorite vermouths and whiskeys!

    • @BarTalkCocktails
      @BarTalkCocktails  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I certainly have a few choices of whisk(e)ys and vermouths that I enjoy. My go-to for whisky is Forty Creek Barrel Select. On the nose, it has honey, vanilla, orange peel, and apricot along with toasted oak, black walnut, and spice. On the palate, it's vanilla, honey, a hint of rye spice, and cocoa. There's a real earthiness and long finish to the whisky with a great price point that works out to about $1.09 CA. an ounce. Other sipping whisk(e)ys include Copper Bold and Confederation Oak by Forty Creek, Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Whiskey, Lagavulin 16-year-old islay single malt scotch whisky, and Macallan 25-year-old single malt scotch whisky which I haven't had in years because I can't afford it anymore. Back in the 1980s, it was very affordable and I would sip on that after my shift working bar. Today, they want $3,600.00 a bottle. Yikes! Too rich for my palate... Far too many other whisk(e)ys I like to mention them all. I'd have to write a very long essay. Ha! As for vermouth, in my Manhattans, I like Martini & Rossi. It's sweet with a good balance and a good price point. Others I enjoy are Dolin Vermouth De Chambery Rouge, and Giulio Cocchi Storico Vermouth di Torino (when it's not out of stock). Again, too many to choose from, and often difficult to find in my area. I'm always exploring new whisk(e)ys and vermouths and I'm sure if you ask me the same question a year from now, I'd have a new list of favourites. Cheers!
