The East & West Coast were both at their peak in '93. Wu-Tang, Black Moon, Onyx, Lords of the Underground, Naughty By Nature, Brand Nubian, Da Youngsta's & Run-DMC all had classic albums!! While Souls Of Mischief, Pharcyde, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Geto Boys, Scarface, Spice 1 & 2Pac all had solid albums as well. Queen Latifah & MC Lyte repped hard for the Ladies!! Cypress Hill also came through with a banger & KRS-One's "Return of the Boom Bap" may be his best album?!! '93 is definitely in the Convo when it comes to the best year in Hip-Hop History!! 🔥🔥
That's cool. But the south was getting more nationwide exposure in 95 and 96. Outkast, Goodie Mob, UGK, 36 Mafia. Plus new orleans had a plethora of artists making hit records locally that would blow up nationally a few years later. Thats why both those years are better than 93.
@@carltonbanks5470 Too be fair the Geto Boys & Scarface repped hard in '93, while 8-Ball & MJG & UGK were making noise on the low as well! Even though the South didn't really take off until about '96, 1993 was still a great year with the contributions from the East & West Coast, respectfully!!
I began high school that year so i witnessed this era from beginning to end. Looking back, i can honestly say that nine-tray was the most significant year in Hip-Hop since 1988 IMO. There was just classics coming left and right. Songs and albums that we study and honor to this day.
I know they didn't make a big impact but they are a part of hip hop. I think their story is ridiculous and wanted to point it out but I get where you both are coming from
@@seanyoung9014I watched an interview where they said they got the name after coming second in a rap contest. The first prize was the name Leaders Of The New School so it's obvious who won. Interestingly it's on record both groups got their name from Chuck D so this could be true.
@@dredocsThey were supposed to make a big impact being produced by the bomb squad. Labels were looking for another big white act since the beastie boys, partly because at that time hip hop was very popular with a white audience throughout Europe.
93....first time seeing a CD used...Eazy E Real Muthaphukkin Gz...bumping it in Boot Camp..graduated Navy boot camp the week of Doggystyle release Nov 93......went seen Carlito's way in my dress whites......got orders to Cuba in Dec
The best thing about this time period is the different kinds of beats and instrumentals. There were many different kinds of sounds at the time in Hip Hop. You had G Funk, Oakland Funk, Boom Bap, Southern Funk, East Coast Funk, the Wu Tang Sound, The Pharcyde had their own sound distinct from LA G Funk.
1993 I was in first grade. I remember snoop doggy dogg, cone heads, teenage mutant ninja turtles, salt n pepa, ruff neck, janet jackson- if. a channel called the box. Where mfs taped videos. N group called onyx. I saw perform live. in real life. Eye 2 eye!!!! they both ignored me
After my close observation, either thru research or experience, I declare the following as THE MOST IMPORTANT YEARS FOR HIP-HOP: 1979. 1981. 1983. 1986. 1988. 1991. 1993-95. 1998. 2002. 2003. 2005. This is NEVER to say the years in between were irrelevant, but these years had the most impact on the culture. Some may disagree............
I think you're pretty accurate. Those 80s years were very important and I didn't realize how important 91 was until I did the video it may be the most underrated year
My vote is 1996. Damn near every album was unskippable that year. 2pac went crazy. Outkast and Goodie Mob had classic albums out. 91 to 95 was the buildup to the apex that was 1996.
I'd rank my top ten hip hop years like this: 1. 1988 2. 1996 3. 1994 4. 1993 5. 1989 6. 1995 7. 2020 (seriously go back and look at the underground releases that year) 8. 1987 9. 1998 10. 2012
@@dredocs That's when the new school really came in. Kendrick, Schoolboy Q, Ab Soul, Flatbush Zombies, Curren$y and more I can't think of right now all had dope projects
Many of those gang members on the Bangin On Wax album were killed after that album was released some by their own gang members. I grew up in VA when that tape/album/CD was in the local music store no one was buying that owner of the store could not even give it away east coast at that time was not feeling that black on black gang silly and foolishness at all that includes NWA and Easy E also. When Ice Cube dropped his 1st album that is when east coast started to really embrace the west coast (also NWA Niggaz for Life Album).
PA- LEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 80's golden era BEST EVER!!!!!! Krs, ll, rakim, chuck d, kane, heavy d, shan, g-rap lyte, shante, biz markie, must I go on??!!!
90-95 was peak, a short window, but what a slew of dope releases that meant something.

Why were the Young Black Teenagers even mentioned in this. They were barely a blip when they released their two albums.
Right? Literally nobody gave a shit about them.

1993 was heavy.
I still think 1987- 1988 and 1996- 19997 were extra amazing.
Thank you for the video.

I agree 93 was a great moment for hip hop
BRAND NUBIAN’S IN GOD WE TRUST and KAM’S NEVA AGAIN CLASSIC!!
I'd say 1988 or 1989 best year ever for rap albums.
88 hands down the best year in rap, look at the album list

Yeah I heard that. It's sad that happened to them.
Worst album cover of 93 goes to C-BO 😅

This the year all the artists tried to be Hardcore
When the phrases "Keep it real" and "Represent" became totally cliché.
