- Last year the oil leak from my Rover 220 Coupe's engine got too bad to drive. It's a common problem on the T Series which needs a head gasket change to fix it, so it went to the back of the barn and the back of the queue but now Im fixing it!

Elephant in the room ? Neglected, forgotten & ignored 😧, sounds like my marriage Matt 😂, It’s ok my Mrs doesn’t watch TH-cam car stuff 🤔 HOPEFULLY so we’re safe.
Damn son the honesty
@@robkneen7546 What is said in Furious room , stays in Furious room 😂, she’ll never know 🤞
Lets hope shes not decided to make an effort and see what you're watching!
@@furiousdriving 😱
Why all the marriages go in the same way, especially for us (men)!
That's one of my favourite cars in your fleet Matt, never get rid of her 😉🏴👍
You made this job look incredibly quick and easy, or just the magic of video editing? In any case, your respectable handy work from rust repair to engine repair is admirable.
Your garage is a car rhubic cube . I think you need more cars🤣🤣🔧👍
Bolts came off because they have soaking in oil for a year from the head leak.😁
Your son has exceptional taste. The Tomcat is an amazing looking car. I always wanted one when I was a kid. I agree, you have to keep hold of it👌🏻
After a game of car Tetris you finaly could start with replacing the head gasket! 😂😂😂 Nice job Matt! I hope you’ll find the car keys! I can’t wait to see it run again! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙 like allways!
Finally some love for the Tomcat! Great job on the head gasket and timing belt. Hope you can find the key 😃Can't wait for the next video of tinkering on the Tomcat. Good luck with everything.
I have now, the keys were hidden in plain sight
Nice! Im part way through a head gasket job on the wifes Corsa. Snapped exhaust manifold stud means i ran out of time last weekend, so the car is on the driveway with half its engine missing until i can get back to it this weekend 😑 Those rover factory manuals are epic, and they really are worth their weight in gold, i have shelf full of them
A good tip for the dreaded manifold bolts is, get one loose give it a squirt of whatever, then tighten it back up and work on the next bolt.
Repeat until all have been loosened and re-tightened.
Then undo all of them.
The reason to do this is, a manifold can warp and as you loosen one end it puts more pressure on already stuck bolts.
And that squirt the night before too
I've never worn gloves working on my car, I just use an old towel to keep my hands clean.
They should have counterbored that oilway hole and put an O ring in. I didn't realise you still had the Tomcat.
The block is.
The Tomcat deserves some love so keep it coming, probably the best looking car you own.
Top job, good seeing some Tomcat care, super care, cant believe you dont still stop for Popmaster
I’ve not got DAB in the garage…
Autodoc are great as long as you are not in a hurry for your parts, I usually find it takes about ten days from order which is fine if you are planning a job for the future but not if it's broken on the drive.
Great work! 💪🏼
Really well done Matt. It was nice to see this one going nearly by the numbers. It came apart OK, it went together eventually without an additional extra 7 hands and the engine does turn. It was great to see the sequential removal of the head bolts and the same with the assembly. I have seen a few videos in the past where it's been a free for all on this with a disaster in the making.. The order of removal and assembly is vital to reduce warpage as the manual mentions and get a good gasket seal. I've only done a few A series head gaskets in my younger years that are much simpler than a double overhead cam head but the principles remain the same as if changing a timing chain on said engines at the same time. Many thanks for sharing.
Haven't seen you dealing with this car for a very long time. Good to see it getting some love and a new lease on life.
Great video. Good to see it back
Fit a combination lock key safe on the wall upstairs, no more mislaid keys. Not that expensive from Amazon and being metal RF proof for any electronic keys, one out of sight at home good as well.
We've currently got in at work for MOT repairs albeit the ABS pump needing to sent away to fixed a Y reg Mini Cooper. It's absolutely mint, exactly the same as your Mini One but with a Cooper badge and white alloys. No idea how many miles it's got on the clock (odometer isn't very readable) but the owner has a lot of Minis!!
Probably alot of miles, they go on and on
@@furiousdriving If I get a chance (and remember) tomorrow I'll see if can see what it's reading, know our tester said the owner has the mileage written down on a bit of paper in the cup holder. I shall endeavour to report back (if I get a chance and remember!!! 😂). 😃
@@furiousdriving Well according to last MOT done in May '23 it had done less than 25,000 miles!!! Registered 13 Sept 2001.
Nice one Matt.
Good work Matt!
Another great video has always matt 👍
I can definitely agree with you on Autodoc - I am in Spain and use the almost weekly
always great content some other youtubers could learn alot
Great little tinkering video Matt, not be long till you will be driving it again, maybe a Rustival 2 contender??
It would be great to have this one there. this, the Crown Vic and the Punto would be a good mix
Good to see you getting better at your mechanics Matt I was expecting a 4 hour video ha ha, let's hope the second video goes smoothly 👍👍, take care, Gareth
He’s getting better at editing. 😊
Of course it was edited.
Even the professionals take 2 hours minimum for this job.
Nice work Matt 👍
Thanks!
I am about to do this on a Volvo 850 East West Engine. Looks the same except inlet and exhaust manifolds on opposite sides. First thing my manual tells me is to disconnect earth from the battery. Looks like yours is still connected. Maybe I can’t zoom in close enough. Lol
Some manufacturers state a dry torque, some state a lubed torque. lubed reduces friction as to increase clamping force
Nice job mate looks so easy on camera 🤣🔧🍺✌️
Swearing on the cutting room floor...
UV dye in the oil. Pop on the yellow glasses and black light under the hood before every drive. Different color dye in the coolant as well.
The exhaust manifold bolts on these engine are notorious for working loose and dropping out which is probably why they were loose. On a sad note from my point of view when I saw a video on the Tomcat I was hoping you were going to say it was for sale…..
Yay one of my Furious Fleet Favourites is almost ready to come back on the road. Love the Tomcat. Will it make Rustival 2 i wonder?
It could, Id like that!
I had a 220GTi with the M series that did weep from the front right corner after 140k. I traded it for a 420GSI with the T series, and when I traded that it had 135000, and not a drop of oil leaked from the head!
I love the tomcat so much
11:49 Do wonder how many Rover K & T series head gaskets were changed in the first six months of ownership..... especially as the original style of gaskets used were nothing like the re-engineered ones you buy now. They were metal and had nicely piped Gasket sealer on them. They were crap!!! 😂😂😂
21:35 I use a breaker bar to do ° bits on head gasket jobs, you can gauges that show the correct ° readings though. 😃
Love the coupe’s. Had the 220 non turbo and a 1.6 k-series. Most fun was the 1.6 but the 220 had more lower end power. Think they are great little cars and if someone offered me the choice of an mx-5 or the coupe rover I’d take the rover.
Cool, nice one. Not the easiest of jobs!
Hope you double checked the timing properly and it's better to use the breaker bar to tighten the head bolts 90° and it's pretty common sense what 90° is innit 😁
Hi
If you need any information please ask.. Ex Rover Tech from that Era
Hi, sorry to jump on the thread. I've got a k-series head gasket to do - never done it before. History says cambelt is recent. Have you always got to disconnect the cams to get to the head? Thanks in advance
Hi..if is just the head gasket then no.. you may have to wiggle the cams around on there pulley bolts to get the torx female socket on
Mr furious Driving..It may be an idea to have the exhaust valves out and clean them up-and the port's.. They did in cases suffer with valve sticking as and it was a TBI mod... It has likely had the modified exhaust valves but after the years.. clean and A lap would be a good call.. Now the M16 and the T16 engines all suffered with head gasket leak on the oil gallery on the front Number 4 front end.. it will likely start leaking again.. They kinda did that. So don't worry if it starts to weep again..
Yes k series you have to remove the cam belt& pulleys and cam carrier to gain access to the head bolts
Id love to own a Rover Tomcat i think its my favourite of the fleet I drove one at the Great british car journey loved but their getting rare now 😢
You want to get that head skimmed if you eventually fit your turbo kit.
I had an 820 with the T series. Are they not stretch bolts, one use only?
Dont think so on the T, they are on the K
Did you not get a turbo kit for the tomcat? Glad it's still around 👍
I decided it was too big to fit in the engine bay
Not a K Series, but still a Rover 😂😂
10 to 15 years for changing a head gasket not bad compared to the Hillman Gazzells with the alloy head l would be lucky to bet two years out of a head gasket no wonder l gave them up and went Japanese never looked back my 1997 Toyota Hilux has never had the head gasket Toyota engineering excellent they got it right it boggles the mind why British Leyland and Rootes Group couldn't get right but Toyota did and they blamed the alloy cylinder head on an iron block my Hilux is an alloy cylinder head on an iron and Nicole block
Lo Matt, getting very forgetful in your advancing years. Stress is a terrible thing. Look after yerself. Now back to buisness.. No head gasket is easy some are easier than others. You certainly made that one look easy. I would agree with you on Auto Doc. I have got parts off them in the past. Those manifold bolts were way to easy to loosen aff. Hope there is no nasty surprises on the rebuild. Lookn forward tae the service vid. Oh i will be expecting report of the ragging ye give the Tomcat. After all that's why they made them. Happy dayz.
Millions of parts for thousands of cars - auto doc😂
Hi Matt, always wanted to know how far your workshop is from your home?,
15-20 minutes in gd traffic, half an hour at the wrong time
@@furiousdriving ahh, just trying to understand the set up , not too bad at all
Tinkering! Wahoo!
Auto doc good job it fitted trying to send stuff back or complaining when they send damaged items is impossible . I stopped using them.
Yay!
Haha such a weak spot on T series. Glad you were able to do it With out breaking the bank
Autodoc take ages to send stuff, they don’t actually stock a great deal they rely on the supplier sending it to their consolidation warehouses, this takes 2-3 days, then 3-4 days shipping to UK. They are also a nightmare for returns and keep your money for ages.
I'll second that. I've bought stuff from Autodoc a few times and while the parts I've received have been fine, its always taken a week to 10 days for deliveries to arrive.
I also hear, though I've never had it myself, that if the specific part you've ordered isn't available, autodoc will send a "near as dammit" replacement, which might not be near enough.
@davewhittle: Strange you didn't get a heart on your comment.
@@karlos543 I get that, he’s got a sponsorship agreement and has to keep them happy, it’s great for his channel to be honest, hopefully helps him move forward with some mechanical jobs.
Agree!
Same in sweden. Used to use them. Now days it takes ages to get what you order if they will send what you order.
Example a friend ordered a chrome altenator (they had in stock) but recived a "standard" one i tok ages to get a reply.
So he ordered another one and before he checked out it was changed to the one he already got. After much complaining they sent the right one.
They only said it will fit. But he wanted a chrome because it is fitted to a beach buggy.
So i have used trodo for a couple of years so far no trouble.
Forgive me if you've mentioned it somewhere, but didn't you plan a maxpedorods turbo kit for this thing? 🤣
yes but it was too bg for the engine bay
Does the Freelander have ABS?
they all do
@@furiousdriving Cool.
You not using new head bolts or did i miss something 😱😱
Thats the K series that needs new ones
strange not to replace the headbolts.
Normal on the K not the T
Umm the big hole you pointed at in the head and the block is not the oilway. That's where a head bolt goes (if you look at the block you can see it has a thread). The smaller hole in front of it is the oilway. That's one of the reasons it leaks.
You're becoming far too proficient Matt, nothing but a lacerated glove to report . . . smoooooth.
How did you evade that "Contains paid promotion" logo on the video? 😅
Don’t know, I ticked the box!
@@furiousdriving Ah, I see they only show it at the start again. Last couple of weeks they sometimes kept showing it throughout the whole video.
Shouldn't you take the head to a machine shop to have it resurfaced or skimmed as you say. Our car was leaking oil into the cooling system and needing a new head gasket. The machine shop is still waiting on the valve guide, my mechanic just informed me.
maybe, but couldnt see a reason to do it here
I bet I'm as chuffed as you are to see that car back running again (when you find the key that is)
very chuffed!
Fancy that, a rover with a failed head gasket. Well i never.

they always leak oil
