The cinematography in this scene is a masterpiece. At 0:27 -- notice how Brendan has light in his background and Tommy's is dark. Speaks volumes about their past and how they both are feeling. Anger vs Forgiving.

Tommy went from saying at first 2:14, you’re no brother to me and turned right around at 3:35 and said you was supposed to stick to the plan. I needed you. You’re my big brother. That shows that he’s hurt but he loves his brother. He just misses him. 😢😢

I love that this is were we really get to see the real Tommy peak his head through this. When he calls Brenden his older brother when he says “you bailed on me”, you really get a good glimpse of how he is as a human.
On the outset, he’s a rough, and callous man who’s been through much. Inside, he’s still the little brother that needed his big brother when he was in the most need.
The juxtaposition at play with Tommy’s character is so emotionally driven, it makes him such an interesting person.

When Brendan sucks his teeth at 4:39 its reminiscent of when Paddy kisses his teeth at the beginning of the film after Tommy says he "liked him better as a drunk". I wonder if thats a really small but specific bit of character work that Joel used to show that Brendan really did spend most of his formative years around Paddy - so much so that he adopted some of his mannerisms. I love this acting so much.

Just cause their share your blood doesn’t make them your brother. Some older brothers are to selfish and self centred to give a shit about their younger brothers. Tommy found his REAL brother on the battlefield. As did I.

Just like what TOMMY said 3:39
"YOU LEAVE YOU GET THE OPPOSITE,.. OK YOU LEAVE YOU GET TO BURY PEOPLE"
So BRENDAN if you never left with your girlfriend Tess then TOMMY could've taken care of your sick mother then TOMMY wouldn't have so much hatred towards you and your family BRENDAN but instead you bailed on own family and sick mother.
So TOMMY had every right not to tell BRENDAN if BRENDAN said "I never got to say goodbye to our mother"
Well BRENDAN if you were around when your mother was deadly sick you could've said "GOODBYE MOM I LOVE YOU😢".
So TOMMY has the right to have 💯% PURE hatred towards BRENDAN at anytime for what did by bailing on his sick mom, alcoholic dad, and him to help take care of their sick mother.

Not to mention Brendan was 16 at the time! What 16 year old sleeps with a girl and goes 'Hey this the woman I'm going to marry!" Please Brendan no matter how you justify it, you choose a girl over your family. He could have made efforts to see her, have a LDR for a while and heck if they did break up. It's not the end of the world!

I disagree, do you really think if Brendan had known his own mother was dying, he wouldn’t have dropped everything to go be with her. He had no idea. And outside of falling in love, he also stated that he stayed because he was starving for love and affection from his own father who apparently didn’t have the time for him

3:06 - 3:19 🙄😮‍💨Hoo-boy, that is quite a statement; *Him forgiving* his brother and mother for leaving. If they had made a plan to leave the abusive drunken father, and Brendan changes the plan for a girl he fell for at *16 years old,* that's a statement. Who in the Hell knows s-t about love at 16 years old?? I get he felt he had a duty and responsibility to her since he had knocked her up, but again, 16 years old; who's to say it would've lasted at that age?
