Sadly there is a fine line a father has to walk. You can not be a friend to your son to soon because then it makes them dependant on you for life. A father's job is to make a man out of the child. We can not have anymore generations of grown kids. My father was like this and I hated him for it. Till I realized it made me into the self sufficient strong man I am today. We don't talk but I thank him a lot for being hard when needed. I just hope I'll know when to not be so hard to my son so he will stick around.

Nobody talks about how, Tommy finally understands why his father was the way he was. He could see the look on his face in the room. Paddy was having PTSD and most likely his drinking was because of what he dealt with in Nam. Tommy finally understood after his stint in the middle east his father wasn't just an alcoholic. He was dealing with the horrors they had to deal with.

Making Birthday day Party's matter. Being visible in your kids life makes a difference. If you are a Father and your kid is 10 and you never seen them. It's too late you missed too much. They will have no use for you because they learned how to deal with heart break without you.

@edwhite1106 yea, sadly tho some women make it harder or make a huge effort to replace and push out a man. Again people don't understand the man's life.
Try being a Nam Vet and coming home to his wife and kids etc. This is why war shouldn't be promoted or seen as a gateway to being a man.

Everyone is talking about the father, but the fact is Paddy being different than what Tommy knew as a kid, being kind, soft spoken, it made him uncomfortable. He knows how to handle his drunk father, he has no idea how to act around his sober father.

My guess is he became that way because he went to fight one of the most disgusting and violent wars and saw things that no human should ever have to see or experience. It destroyed him and many other Vietnam veterans and the USA government just tossed them to the curb when they returned - no mental help or real assistance. The only way a lot of them could ever "manage" was to drink. And when they became alcoholics, it brought out all the trauma unfiltered. Really, Paddy is a victim of a government that sent him to do their bloody work and left him to deal with all the trauma of experiencing all that brutal violence alone.

Keep in mind that as a kid, when Tommy saw his father drinking like that, he was most likely terrified for his mother, and sometimes for himself. As a grown man, he sees his father in a rageful state, but instead of cowering in fear or stepping back, he moves in with confidence, knowing that as a grown, capable man, his dad cannot hurt him anymore. More than that, and probably for the first time, he sees his father's drinking as what it is, a faulty coping mechanism, and realizes how fragile his old man is.
P.S - Paddy wasn't just offering to listen to Tommy about the tragedies of war, but in part he wanted to share his own experience - meaning, to be heard as well.

Goddamn. Most people know Tom Hardy from ‘Venom’, ‘Mad Max’, and playing ‘Bane’ in Batman. Do yourself a favor. Check out ‘Wuthering Heights’. BBC series based on the classic novel. Hardy plays Heathcliff. A stoic, tortured estate owner in love with his childhood friend, but unable to express it in the ways she requires.
The scene where Heathcliff here’s the news of her passing is some of the most powerful acting I’ve ever seen. Hardy stumbles behind a brick wall, and lets out a pained scream that starts almost emasculate, then builds to something that can only be described as heartfelt. Truly an amazing actor

If you watch this movie all Tommy’s anger and resentment is targeted mostly towards his family and fighting his outlet. He’s always nice to others… he’s a good person just haunted by his past

I remember the first time I watched this and felt like someone punched me in the stomach when he threw the coins at his dad. Then got teary eyed when Tommy wakes us to find his dad broken and drunk, ending his sobriety.

What's interesting about this scene is that Paddy has listened to Moby Dick and put himself in Ahab's shoes so many times that contextually by hearing these metaphors he can repeat the story to his son when relapsed as if to say 'do you want me to be the Godless son of a bitch again as you are being now?'

As tragic as this scene is, Paddy actually makes an attempt, and actually gets Tommy to open up and mention what happened.
Tommy didn't show up on his dad's doorstep by accident. He loved and missed him.

Rlly fucks me up. I wish the next time I see my father he would be in a situation like this and I’d just laugh in his fuckin face for having everything he deserves, but ofc my guilty conscience will kick in and I’m fckin feel bad and fuck my self over and lose to help someone else out. Good thing I was always told life isn’t fair, unfortunately I keep refusing to listen.
