Autumn Faerie Skirts and Renaissance Armbands | Sewing my Renaissance Festival Costume

  • This weeks video is a little talking and instruction heavy! I made two skirts for my Renaissance Fairy costume, the underskirt is a basic gathered rectangle and the overskirt is a lace handkerchief skirt. I go over how I make the lace skirt have only pretty edges all around and how I sew it to make it look seamless! I also made fancy armbands, two upper and two lower and I go over how I made the very simple pattern and then back to the regularly scheduled pretty music and sewing content. All of the pieces this week are fairly simple so hopefully this one is easier for following along!

    The handkerchief skirt looks stunning. Could you link to one or two of the renesans paintings you mention in the description? I'd love to see what you are referencing ( if no that's cool too)

      ok so i'm looking right now but all I'm finding are images from the Borgia's tv show and other peoples costumes/dolls so maybe I imagined the paintings! I'm going to keep looking for a bit more and if I find any actual paintings I'll let you know the name 😅

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      i think i figured it out kind of - the style I made where it's really short on the upper arm seems to only exist in fantasy tv show land 😅 and looks to be an interpretation of two part sleeves found in the following paintings - "Resurrection of the Notary's Son" by Ghirlandaio, "Meeting of the Betrothed Couple and Departure of the Pilgri" by Carpaccio. Plus probably some other but that's what I found in my quick search right now! I'm going to pin your comment in case anyone else is wondering too 😊

    I know this is an older video, but I have to say that your explanation for the armbands was the most succinct and understandable armband (which can translate to bracers/gauntlets) that I've seen. I've always had trouble with making gauntlets, but I'm definitely using this as a tutorial in the future!

    The colors are absolutely delicious! It's so cold and gloomy here and you have a proper Autumn going on here. And the textures are just chef's kiss. The handkerchief skirt turned out beautiful. You really did hide all those seams.
    I'm actually really glad I managed to see the video, there was some weird glitch that froze it after the first five minutes and drove me up the wall. I wanted my pretty video fix! Luckily it allowed me to see the rest.

    Hi, wonderful project, it turned out great!
    The stays /chemise combo is definitely my favorite.
    For the sleeve part, like someone else already pointed out, I think that attaching it to the stays is the simplest way to get it to stay in place. By putting another eyelet in the back of the shoulder straps, putting a ribbon through it that will be attached to the top of the armband via another eyelet. If you place the eyelets on the back of the arms, then it will not be too noticeable and you can keep it in place without worrying about it.
    Don't know how to better explain it but that's what I did for mine.

    For the whole sleeve issue, I'd say sew (or tie) ribbons from the head of the corset shoulder to the crown edge of the forearm sleeve to make it all one piece, but still show off the chemise. That way, they stay in place without you having to yank them back up.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hm i'm not sure I'm quite understanding, sorry! I'm a super visual person so I have trouble with written explanations 😅 Do you mean like the top of the armscye by the shoulder point to the middle top edge of the upper arm band? or something else?

    • @maywenearedhel
      @maywenearedhel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moth.faerie so, what you'd do is sew or tie the top of the ribbon to the shoulder strap and the bottom to the top of the upper sleeve. Then tie/sew another ribbon at the bottom of the top sleeve and the top of the bottom sleeve. Then each piece is connected to the next by ribbons. If you want, you can connect them at 4 points to create a skeleton sleeve where everything is floating on ribbons. I hope that helps.

      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you!! if i figure out a good way to keep the armbands up without having to tug them up constantly i'll let you know! so far I think elastic instead of ribbon might be the best option 😅

    • @KittieRoses
      @KittieRoses 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moth.faerie Hmm I wonder if adding boning could also help. It would give it a little more structure. Hopefully you're able to find a way to do it! If I end up making them and find a way to hold them in place before you figure it out (doubtful that I will but just in case) I will let you know my findings as well.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KittieRoses I'm not sure that boning would help because they're pretty rigid already from making them out of a very cardboard-y coutil, I think it's mostly that it wants to slip to the narrowest part of my arm but I want it to stay around one of the wider parts.. if it was the fabric crunching in on itself then I definitely think boning would work!

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that would work really well if the arm band was on bare skin! i think over the chemise though it would just stick to the chemise and the chemise would slip down? thank you for the suggestion anyways!

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@moth.faerie oh yeah i wouldn't do it on top of fabric. The other thought i had was to thread it with elastic and the ribbon so you can disguise the elastic but still keep it up. Or sew the elastic to the ribbon. Not sure how that last one would work though

    It's beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a new subscriber (found you bc of this costume's first video and have been binging your vids since!!)
    I wonder how to go about getting the overskirt slightly poofier? Would you suggest gathering a larger circumference down more? (Or maybe using some horsehair braid just below the gathering stitch line would work? Bc I've had some sitting in my stash for almost 3 years and every time I think I have a use for it, I wind up coming up with a different solution lol)
    For reference, I absolutely fell in love with the corset/chemise combo and am now attempting to design similar elements around pumpkin/bloomer shorts for a more boy-ish ensemble. Cheers~~

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it depends on the fabric but more gathering should definitely help it be poofier! The lace doesn't really poof much since it's pretty heavy without much body so I do'nt know that it could actually be achieved with this fabric. The horsehair might work, but I personally wouldn't do it with this because it'll show through the transparent parts of the lace and will end up with a lot less predictable gathering. Good luck with yours, it's sounds super cute! If you end up posting it on instagram, please tag me I'd love to see it! (same username on ig as on here)

    Your chemise is very fine, but in a heavier fabric I'd say safety pin the upper armbands. You'll always be fighting gravity so will have to cheat somehow. 😉 Lovely skirts!

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว
