    Very cute! Love the green, and the beige cardigan goes nicely with it. I love the little edits you made, I do that too - edit the commercial patterns. I look at them as a base from which I can customize my projects to make what suits me. I love seeing that you do this too!! The white facing on the hem looks great!! The style of dress may not be suited to winter but it's very pretty. Sending love to you and Babybat. My son saw Babybat and went and grabbed our void kitty (Baby), and stood here half the video telling me to go back to to cat bits so he could show Baby her twin! He held her up to the screen and told her to look, lmao! It was adorable. We very much enjoyed watching Babybat walk past in the mirror behind you!

    When you were talking at the end about wanting it to look more professional and less “homemade” makes complete sense! It didn’t come off as condescending at all. I think it was Evelyn Wood I was watching at some point and she said something along the lines of “you want it to look handmade, not homemade.” and that stuck with me.

    • @moth.faerie

      ooh that's a much better way to put it! definitely will be saying that from now on. I'm glad it didn't come off condescending 😅

    I think if I ever feel like studying a whole new "industry" I'd love to just look into making adjustable clothing and even selling them. Like studying old historical dresses and things that were made adjustable and figure out how to make "modern" clothing that way to make it better for a constantly changing female (/human) body

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that would be a great thing to get into! I'm hoping that eventually the fashion industry moves away from the mentality that clothing is disposable and more towards creating sustainable clothing that is sturdy and adjustable enough to wear for ages!

    Loved seeing how you made the changes to the pattern. I tend to want to alter commercial patterns, but I end up overthinking it and then I just get frustrated with the whole process because it doesn't turn out how I envisioned it. What you did made it simple and it looks like something I could do. I'd love to see more of that type of thing (altering patterns for customization) in the future. Thanks so much for all the awesome content you publish! I learn something new and every video.

    Sizing the dress while I m at my fullest, is probably the best time to do the planning because our bodies need room to breath, and eat, and to be gassy and bloated and still look put together. I want to feel comfortable and confident. Perhaps the inherent problem with our fashion expectation is that we want to have a silhouette that is tightly fitting always. It’s like painting the floor and realizing that you’ve painted oneself into a corner.
    I’m coming to embrace elastic and lace closure with modesty panel as my pivot from the rigid structure. I want my bras to fasten in front, and for the cup size to be more accurate, so I’m learning what I like best in some bras and making my own.

    Coming late to this video, but I can't agree more with your ending comments about techniques and finishings!! I've found that indie pattern companies are sometimes better at instructions that lean toward durable, "professional" construction than big 4 patterns. I made a blouse by Papercut recently and the attention to detail in the instructions was really impressive. And I feel so much more eager to wear it knowing that it doesn't scream "I made this last weekend and I want to tell you all about it". (I love telling people about my selfmade clothes so I like that vibe sometimes! Just not all the time.) This dress turned out so charming and sweet. Hope the resizing wound up working well!

    My fashion school sewing instructor used to say Becky Home-Ecky as well--and she also wouldn't let us use hand sewing for anything that could be machined (it was only approved for embroidery and hems). But I ended up not going into fashion as a career and she definitely did give me a bit of a hang-up about having to do things the "right" way, even though most of my sewing is modern daily wear I incorporate a lot of costume and historical techniques in my practice as well.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha that's so funny, it must have been a more common phrase when home ec actually existed! that's so interesting about the no hand sewing though, I think probably that's a big difference between fashion and costume school - I had a classmate who came from the fashion industry and everything seems to be much more about speed and efficiency (while still doing things 'correctly') while our professors really liked it when we incorporated hand sewing, since it's more historical/couture! we of course still used the machine on anything that needed the strength of machine stitches, but one of my classmates did make a pair of stays entirely by hand bc our professor thought it would be a good exercise in learning historical techniques

    so pretty! thanks for putting us on this pattern, this inspired me to make my own garment! i think i will make a top out of the pattern though, and with a shirred panel in the back because im scared of zippers and for me the pros (easier to get in and out of, more comfortable, stretches and shrinks to your body as your neasurements fluctuate and it still fits nice and snug all because of the added stretch) of doing a shirring panel instead do by far outweigh the cons (idk i just think it looks a bit fast fashion, and it takes a bit longer than installing a zipper because of all the prep work with winding the bobbin at just the right tension and marking out your lines for nice and even lines of shirring) of it. i think i'll start with one in this cream fabric i have with a tiny light purple and baby blue floral print on it, and if i like it as much as i think i will ill probably have one in every colour by summer haha. thanks again!

    Bernadette Banner has a pocket trick where she attaches a tape from the large part of the pocket and attaches it to the waist of her skirts and dresses, this could solve your issue with a phone weighing the dress down.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i thought of doing that but because this dress isn't really anchored at the waist it would just pull on the elastic at the shoulders and maybe result in a wardrobe malfunction 😅 that trick totally works with things that have a really fitted waistband though!

    I don't know how textured your fabric was, but I once made a dress out of seersucker where the mock-up fit perfectly and the seersucker version was overly large when I finished it. I *think* it's because of the texture; it flattens out as you wear the dress, or right after you press it and that makes the garment "grow". If you throw your dress in the dryer after washing, it might shrink up again. Now, I press the daylights out of my textured fabrics before cutting.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      french seams are pretty easy, just a bit tedious! and are really nice on summery dresses 😊 i feel like it keeps the seams a little lighter than bound seams. ah i feel that, there's definitely always some compromise between time and level of finishing

    Thank you so much for this and all your other fantastic videos! I've already learned so much and have both recommended your channel to others and had others recommend it to me! :D I'm wondering if you have a list somewhere of the materials/sources you like to use. Things like what punch machine you use, where you like to source hardware, the sewing machine you like, types of boning, misc hand tools, etc. Especially if there are affiliate links where shopping from your recs could benefit you I'd love to know! Thank you again for all of your awesome content and happy sewing! :D

      i don't have a single list unfortunately, but that's a good idea to make one! as for punch machine its the cs osborne grommet press available on wawak.com and the sewing machine i use is a juki ddl8700

      @@moth.faerie Thank you so much for the punch info! I'll definitely check it out. 😄 I know Amazon has an affiliate link/build a shop filled with your recs program but since they're less than ideal I did some googling and found that other places like Target and Etsy, to name a few, have something similar. So if you do decide to put together a list and want to stay away from Amazon but benefit from your referrals it seems like there are a good number of options out there. (And I'd be thrilled to see your suggestions and would probably end up doing a bit more shopping than I originally intended -but isn't that often the story with sewing goodies? 😄 )
      Also, if you ever feel like doing a library tour/book rec video, a "how you assess books/tools/sewing machines/patterns to decide if they're worth it" kind of thing, or shorter videos that are more technique based like using the fasturn tool, your favorite ways to finish seams, favorite resources or approach for learning new techniques, your top 5 techniques for pattern hacking/alteration, etc I would definitely watch all of those! I really appreciate the way you communicate information and share the reasoning behind and nuances of various techniques tools. Thank you again! (And also I'm sorry this comment became a bit of a novel. 😅)

    would adding a back half-sash help? that way, you wouldn't have to take in the dress at all, and you'd know it would fit you all month.

    If you add your shirring would that fix it without messing with the zipper? I hate installing them so maybe that is just me projecting not wanting to redo it.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah i absolutely feel you it's probably the reason i won't actually move the zipper 😅 shirring could work with the zipper if I get it balanced correctly! it does make it harder to zip up generally but eh thats ok lol. adding side waist ties would probably also do it

    Can you talk a little about how the dress on the envelope looks 'home-made'? I'm a 100% self-taught sewist with no formal education in dressmaking. I'm all about seam finishes (LOVE me some French seams) but other than that it's hard to know sometimes what sets 'hand made' apart from 'home made'.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sure! so mostly it's the fabric choice that looks odd - it's very flimsy looking but also weirdly stiff so it looks like it was made of either a super cheap quilting cotton (nothing's wrong with quilting cotton in general, but the $2/yard stuff is weird and papery) or dress shirt material, which just looks odd on a dress meant to be flowy. the fabric choice is also making the whole dress, especially in the cups, stand away from her body rather than hugging it. the hem being bound in bias tape is also a little odd for this material, with something like a wool skirt, a bound hem is totally fine because the fabric already has weight to it, but when you're making a skirt out of something super light weight, you want them hem to be more substantial to keep it more grounded.

  • @byrnesecraig4721
    @byrnesecraig4721 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the hem - I have been planning a sew for a son-de-flor inspired dress! The hand sewn stitch you used for the hem isn't familiar to me - does the stitch have a name?

    I appreciate you doing the little finishing changes. Whenever I've made a dress fun a mainstream pattern I'm always disappointed because it doesn't look finished, even when it's finished and just looks kinda lazy. I guess there trying to make it easier for people but still irritating.
