I tend to be a bit of a purist when it comes to blues tunes and favor the older renditions, but Rogers plays with such virtuosity, and makes his mark on a fine old tune without trampling all over it. It's almost like I can hear him and Johnson playing all at once. Truly remarkable work.
Roy and Bob Brozman are my two favorites. I love how Roy does his triplets. I wish he would come back to Olympia. Roy -- you are a God on the guitar. Your vocals are awesome as well. You are one of the best blues men of our time.
I completely agree. Roy has got the blues. I used his signature pinky slide for years until I lost it somewhere. Once you move the slide off your ring finger to your pinky - it is an epiphany. I would love to see a Roy Rogers / Leo Kottke ticket in a small venue.
Impossibly, unfeasibly brilliant. The living master of country blues slide guitar. Completely respects Robert Johnson's original whilst adding something new
Roy is truly an epic musician. He has so much soul and fire. Guys like Roy, Bob Brozman, & Kelly Joe Phelps make the sublime look easy. It's like they're dunking from the 3 point line. Thank you Mendo College for the incredible video and for recognizing world treasure Roy Rogers.
stumbled onto this one - good god. Now i'll be days looking at the rest of his. Don't know how I could have missed this guy for so long. Incredible. Roy, I'm seriously a fan now.
An even better version of this song (IMHO) is on the 1988 CD Slidewinder (ten bucks on iTunes). He headed up John Lee Hooker's band for 4 years before going solo, & on that CD's "Terraplane Blues," Hooker sings & just lets Roy rip. If you ever have a chance to see him live go! He still plays around the West Coast a lot, and gigs with Ray Manzarek (Doors organist).
I agree that Roy is overplaying this song, but it's clear that he is putting his heart and soul into it. I really enjoy his interpretation, even if it is overplayed. I listen to this song almost as much as I listen to Robert Johnson's.
Also check out his You Tube channel Roy Rogers Slides and the official Roy Rogers website. His PBS special with Ray Manzarek is scheduled for late fall.
Naturally long fingers makes this kind playing possible. That's not to say that everyone with long fingers can ever play a guitar like this virtuoso, but him without long fingers would make it impossible.
fantastic acoustic version although when it comes to electric versions I love the fool for the city foghat version ride the bottle price just laid down some of the most serious Blooze slide
And just think, nobody had heard anything like this in Johnson's stomping grounds before until he came around. No wonder why the urban legend of him selling his soul to the devil started; it really does border on the supernatural.
@TsuruCrane So there is no pain eh? I would imagine that being able to play with such virtuosity as RR might involve a bit of pain considering to time involved in devoting yourself to be able to reach this level of skill in playing. But then I gues we can ignore skill, clarity, and artistic creativivity just because somebody else says he hurts.
He's crazy fast, I'd say faster than RJ, however RJ plays more soulful and he's also a fantastic singer. Roy is not that good of a singer, but a crazy good guitaristt!
Quite cool version, however Roy is seriously over playing this song and I wouldn't be playing the E chord, it hardly needs it. The beauty of Terraplane blues is its sophisticated simplicity..which eludes many performers.
no mean of blasfemy (about comparing RJ), but if Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil for the sake of playing.....this guy must be in even deeper shit!!

Remember Robert improvised his arrangements, accounts recall no two times were the same renditions.
The man has been underrated to ry Cooder others....has an an unbelievable understanding of fretboard..he can do anything IMHO
paolo di califas
absolute perfection

a brilliant performance by master bluesman MR. rogers !
Very nice! 👍
I think Robert Johnson would approve!
Nobody plays around with rythm and beat switches like he does...amazing...
The Blues has many faces.. this man is a genius at HIS blues sound.. and I dig it!!
I love the way Roy takes traditional open G or A songs and plays them in open D or E....creates a unique sound......
I completely agree. Roy has got the blues. I used his signature pinky slide for years until I lost it somewhere. Once you move the slide off your ring finger to your pinky - it is an epiphany. I would love to see a Roy Rogers / Leo Kottke ticket in a small venue.
Awesome tribute to the man.
Prettiest version I've ever heard.
Impossibly, unfeasibly brilliant. The living master of country blues slide guitar. Completely respects Robert Johnson's original whilst adding something new

Play, play and play!
Jesus o Riley~! this is the BUSINESS!!! Awesome!
stumbled onto this one - good god. Now i'll be days looking at the rest of his. Don't know how I could have missed this guy for so long. Incredible. Roy, I'm seriously a fan now.
I am so glad that this was recorded through a professional sound board, not just the microphones!!
I guess I’m late to this party but holy smoke that was some precise picking going on there!! Killer vocals!!
This is awesome.
Man this is so amazing.. ROY ROGERS IS A CHAMP.
Great brilliance this is.
first time ive ever heard this done the right way Amazing thank you

"You got a good lil' car, but it won't last long the way you drive. Heh heh heh!"
Oh, this is sweet!
Roy is so good guitarist because he has not lost its roots, it makes strange mixtures with other musicians plays pure blues
Outstanding!
Amazing.
such great command of slide ...the best!
Holy shit !!!!!!!!
Pozdrav iz Srbije👍🇷🇸
This is absolutely incredible
Have enjoyed RR live many times and would recommend to anyone who loves music that you go see him play live if
One man - One awesome guitar playing.
Wow
I never really saw the use of putting the slide on your ring finger....such a hindrance. I love this man, Absolute blues
Perfect!
Roy Rogers is the MAN :D
tres mucho very impressive

RR is a monster.
Roy got it goin'!!!
Holy crap.

RR is the new King.... sounds like RJ turned up to a higher level.... long live the blues!

let me guess: the 2 dislikes do love justin bieber's music :D
My guess would be jealousy of Rogers' musical ability...🤷♂️
fantastic acoustic version although when it comes to electric versions I love the fool for the city foghat version ride the bottle price just laid down some of the most serious Blooze slide
The Blues Sliding Master Let him be your teacher !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's real!
I literally do not understand this level of skill. Its something you have to be born to acquire.
Or sell your soul to the devil...
And just think, nobody had heard anything like this in Johnson's stomping grounds before until he came around. No wonder why the urban legend of him selling his soul to the devil started; it really does border on the supernatural.
Jazz player of the year goes to...Roy Rodgers.
How does he get distorted tones out of that guitar? incredible.
amazing guy,
check fongster100 too - old guy with devil in guitar:D
@LKing2008 There are few guitar players like him.
That left hand is like a spider on a hot lamp.
Anybody know what tuning he's in here?
*************************** ..ran out of stars to give him !!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't he just - over play it that is, then set it on fire, pissed on it and splashed in the puddles. Still very slick indeed.
@TsuruCrane So there is no pain eh? I would imagine that being able to play with such virtuosity as RR might involve a bit of pain considering to time involved in devoting yourself to be able to reach this level of skill in playing. 'kin 'ell. Most of that was impossible. At 1:18 I realised that ability such as this is given to very few people. I'm not one.
@chub4play You're suggesting this guy is better than Robert Johnson? What drug are you on?
Pain? He doesn't play with pain? That's because his pain is sitting in the front row drooling.
He's crazy fast, I'd say faster than RJ, however RJ plays more soulful and he's also a fantastic singer. Roy is not that good of a singer, but a crazy good guitaristt!
Sounds like 3 or 4 guitars...
like 10) 2 max
that man is lost in the groove
Quite cool version, however Roy is seriously over playing this song and I wouldn't be playing the E chord, it hardly needs it. The beauty of Terraplane blues is its sophisticated simplicity..which eludes many performers.
no mean of blasfemy (about comparing RJ), but if Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil for the sake of playing.....this guy must be in even deeper shit!!
He used a thumb pick......
Wait, what? This song is about a girl?
Awesome but you casn rest assured that Robert never used a pick.
@chub4play he was better
