More entertaining than Mr H. Fav car that is hard. I will say i have driven all three Viva types in my years. I passed my test in a HC. My second car was a HA deluxe with the optional servo disc brakes. Later I had a HB 1600 (the OHC engine) I wanted a GT but I could not find one. That was in the days of local ads or Exchange and Mart. Filters in the tanks. I have just removed it. It was hard. Just kept at it with a screw driver and it eventually came off. i now use one of the filters like you have purchased. If placed in the engine bay keep away from heat to stop evaporation.
Thank you very much! What a cool list of cars! 👌 I miss the days of admag and adtrader, I used to buy a car from them every couple of month 😀 Thanks for the info on the filter! Will keep that one in mind. Thanks for watching 👍
Late 60s Austin Westminster 110 MK2. Vauxhall Vive 1300 SL and most favorite Opel Manta 2.0 Irmsher Coupe are my favorites drove each one for thousands of miles 'back in the day' .
The Westminster, surely the heaviest post war car ever built on British roads, yes we had them on NZ roads too. As well as the 110, we had a 90 version too. Just a different production year.👌👍🍺🍻🥃🌎🗽💚
I had a 1965 MK1 Cortina around 1977 which I rebuilt the engine and it got nicked about 2 weeks later and was found smashed up, I loved that car, it was my first one, a little later I bought a 72 Vauxhall Viscount 3 speed auto which was well posh for me, then a after that a MK 1 Granada, wish I still had them all, all worked on outside, don't it always rain when you wanna work on the motor, great vid.
My first car was a Ford Cortina mark 2, But my best car. Would have to be G reg Ford Granada Scorpio 2.0. Wow memory's are great, and even today. They still bring a smile.
@@RetroRebuild Yeah I had ALL the Cortina's up to the Mark 5. But The Granada had all the bells and whistle for that time. Keep up with your videos so much enjoy watch you and see how your getting on.
My auntie's old Mk1 Escort estate that she bought when it was 1 year old. Many happy memories in the back of that car as kids. I bought it in 1995 & stuffed a Rover sd1 Vitesse efi & 'box into it with a narrowed Capri 280 lsd axle, stripped out with a half cage, Recaros & genuine Ford Mexico front wings along with Bilsteins & 7x13 Alleycats. She hated it after that for some reason 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cheers. Leigh.
I just love the viva s of that vintage, my first car was a viva van, I ran it for years. Good project, and I like your "salt of the earth" style. Peace be unto you.
Got to be minis for me mate, had 11 & 1 mini van in my teens (1986 on) spent my nights /weekends welding sills floor pans ,A panels & wings, used to race my mini against mates mini pick from Felton up to Rothbury on the weldon bridge road, the loser bought the chippy supper ,then race back, was geat times.keep up the great work👍
My first car was a 1974 1256 Vauxhall Viva, then a '74 2279 Magnum with Old nail arches and 3rd party 'snoot' nosecone. I added twin 48 Dellorto's to that. I then bought a '73 2.3 Firenza which I added a genuine Droopsnoot nosecone to, along with Zakspeed wheel arches (originally meant for a Capri I believe), 8" wheels with 225 tyres, and rebuilt the engine with big valve head, fast road cam etc, Droopsnoot exhaust and a 5 speed ZF gear box. I also found a rejigged Ford Capri 4.1 LSD axle which fitted really well. I later replaced the engine and box with a 302 (5ltr) Mustang engine and 5 speed Cosworth box but never got round to finishing that project. I still love those old Vauxhalls and occasionally watch old Gerry Marshal racing videos of him and Old Nail and Baby Bertha. I think I've some old Vauxhall parts in a locker somewhere... Those were the days (for me anyway).
I used to have K reg 1972 viva . I paid £140 for it , and on my way home the clutch went. I bought a new clutch for it and my Dad and myself put it in . Luckily we only had to drop the gear box , it took about 2 hours to do and it was back on the road the same day. This was back in the early 90's and the clutch was only £40 great cars. Keep up the good work mate .
HC increased clutch diameter to 7" for the 1256cc ohv, a big improvement to the HB 1159cc ohv 6" smaller clutch. My first HB had thrust bearing rattle whenever activated 😎 I just lived with it. Eighteen months later bought a much newer HC, ten years younger metallic bronze real stunning looker back in the day with quad lamps 🔦 at the front. Later, I put over-riders & genuine reverse lamps 🔦 & lockable petrol cap. Thanks for taking me back to the day 🙂
another excellent video, cheers. I LOVED my Audi 100, so sad to scrap it as there was a swimming pool in the cabin after EVERY rainfall, I thought it was going to be an expensive welding job........the day after I scrapped it, I was reading an online forum and somebody posted about their "swimming pool "........ some other bugga replied "did you check the drain bung on the scuttle, they block up really easily with leaves and dirt and the scuttle fills up and drains into the cabin......." AAAAAHHHHHHHHH .....that was my screaming at my laptop. sob.....
Thank you very much! Ah never!! Love the older Audis. I had an early M reg A4 where the scuttle kept filling up aswell. Probably classed as a retro car now. Thanks for watching 👍
Took me 9 months to get my mk1 cavalier on the road and it had been driven in to the one and only owners garage in 1996 and not seen the light of day till last year! Definitely takes time.
First car was a 2 door HC Viva, replaced the engine out of a scrap one to get working. The work we have done on different Vivas over the years. Recon engines, gearboxes, rear axle, prop shafts. The worst job, trying to extract the top bolt from the front shock. Heat, cold chisel, more heat, bigger hammer, 3 evenings later the bolt finally broke and out it came. Always fancied a Magnum.
Very cool! I know too much about seized bolts on Vivas! 😀 My plan is to replace every bush on the car and I'm not expecting any of the bolts to be easy to take out 🤣 The Magnums are very cool cars! Thanks for watching 👍
Rusty floors was always our major rust pain point. The hand brake bracket at the back where the cable splits always struck me as a crap design. It rusted stopping the cables moving and then eventually buckled. Yours actually looks still ok
Agreed! All cars look the same today, plastic bubbles. Cars back then had personality, you could spot each model a mile off. Bring back square lines and chrome I say!
🤣 I think a lot of people have been in the same boat where they've stripped a car down and just left it! Its very time-consuming! Your comment put a smile on my face 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
My favourite is a Vauxhall Viva HC. I have a lot of fond memories being in the back of them going for a hurrel. It's always been my ambition to drive one or even own one but I'm not mechanically minded so I would be terrible with it.
My Auntie and Uncle had the model with the soft top roof and the same colour as yours. The monkey's at Blair Drummond Safari Park took great delight at picking bits off the roof lol
My favourite car is a childhood thing, I remember my dad coming home from work (sometime in 1972) in a brand spanking new MK1 Escort RS1600, it was an epic car and went like stink. Sadly he crashed it on a Rally in 1977, 😢, it’d be worth a small fortune now.
Very cool! Yes you are right they are worth a small fortune! If only I'd had a crystal ball I would have bought a few back when they were going cheap! Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
My first car was a viva 1200 gls red and brown due to rust loved it went like the clappers the starter used to jam spent lots of time rocking it in gear to free it up 😅 was heartbroken when it went got another the same as your one wasn’t the same tho
So glad to see your indicator lens back on, drive shaft ( prop shaft ) on. Glad you answered my question, your green reverse light wire ( feed ) goes under your car. NZ boot loom incl redundant wire for aftermarket "Wipac" lamps 🔦 👌 Must show us boot lamp 🔦 switch close up, not available NZ back in the day. I rigged up my own system with switch on latch & aftermaket viva hc number plate lamp to under parcel shelf c 1990 I think 🤔 🧨 I spotted your front bumper on the floor, must be the next 😉 project for a rainey day. Your new stereo will have to play "I can't stand the rain" 🤣🤣👌👍🧨🍺🍻🥃🌎🗽
As always Vernon, thanks for the info. So are you saying mine is a posh Viva because it has the boot light? 🤣 I'll get the front bumper put on for you in the next video 👍 Thank you for continuing to watch 👍
Any xj6 Jag, '68 to '92. I've had six, currently an '88 Series 3 V12. Absolutely love it. Viva coming along great. Everything you do, you do it well. This is going to be a reliable old bus. Always hit like first, that's a given.
Very cool, my Dad has had many inbetween those years, he loves his old Jags. As always thank you very much for continuing to watch and for hitting that like button first! Appreciate it 👍
Ford Corsair 2000e, my first car after passing my test in 1978, cost £600 was a lovely car, huge and great fun to drive! Had the "Old fords never die" sun visor strip! Keep up the good work 👍👏👏👏
Great Progress!! Favourite classic? Maybe the Jaguar XJ6 Series 1.....Cortina Mk3 too, and the Rover P6........also pretty much anything by BL, Vauxhall, Ford or Rootes!!
Had my £140 “snot green” viva back in ‘88 and I got a swap for a mark 2 escort 1600 sport in orange which I loved and was probably my favourite car. In hindsight it was quite a decent swap ..! Yours is coming along nicely mate , keep it up , looking forward to the next one already ! 👍🏻
Wow bargain! (though maybe not so much of a bargain in '88 😀) Both very nice cars! Thank you very much, appreciate your comments. Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
I'm loving this content. Your doing a great job mate. I can remember sitting on my grandads knee, and him letting me steer his Viva. Always had a soft spot for these cars. Thank you for bringing back the precious memories mate.
Watching your vids has given me a push to get on with my vivs again, been working on it this weekend, i hated doing the fuel line and rear brake lines ! not sure which is my favorite classic, i have had loads, maybe my mk1 capri gt xlr ! i would use the cheapy fuel filter and i cant imagine loosing the in tank fuel filter.
Ah brilliant mate, glad you are cracking on with yours! A Capri gt xlr very cool 👌 Thanks for the info on the filters and thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Ten years ago I bought a Jaguar XJ-S Manual. It's a car I've wanted since I first saw one in 1975 going in to London on the A4. I love this car as it is as much fun to drive as I imagined. If you like a tail happy rear drive car then get one as they are so much fun.
Superb videos. Love them. I would run a filter king in the engine bay to filter fuel. Those filters you have are okay but not the best. Best old car… had loads of mk3 cortina’s, 1972 VX 4/90, 4 vivas including a coupe. 1967 Victor. Should have kept them all. Keep up the great work. 😊
Thank you very much! I'll check out the filter kings, thanks for the suggestion. Very cool list of cars you have there, all of my favourites! Thanks for watching 👍
I had a £50 Triumph Dolomite 1500tc in 1983 wings where full of filler and chicken wire I loved it first car touring scrap yards brilliant best fun I ever had allways have a car I can enjoy messing with John
Very cool! 👌 I know what you mean, there was nothing I loved more when I was a kid than having a good rummage around scrap yards 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
My favourite has to be between 2. My Ruby red Magnum 2300 or my VX490 note the missing / as mines was one of the last in ember red with red tartan interior and dog leg 5 speed box. Another fantastic video. As I said before, a genuine enthusiast with no fancy tooling or sponsorships. That's the great appeal about your videos. Keep em coming....we'll worth it.
Favourite retro car? That depends on what retro TV series I'm watching and get reminded as to what exists. I was watching Bergerac the other week and rediscovered the Renault Fuego and the charm of the basic Ford Escort mk3. I'd keep to running an in tank filter with a metal tank as its potential for blocking is increased due to rust. An inline filter would still leave the tank end of the inlet and a lot of pipe vulnerable to blocking before the fuel got to the filter.
Renault Fuego is a shout! My stepdad had a Fuego Turbo back in the day, B259 TBU. Always hoped it would be mine one day but the A-pillars rusted away and he cut it up in our yard :(
Hi, subscribed , after having a red 1978 vauxhall chevette for my first car many years ago I am interested in your build and look forward to many more videos to come keep up the good work.
I'm lucky to be alive to tell you the truth I put chrome eight spokes on it and being only seventeen at the time and stupid I didn't put washers with the nuts so what happend was the wheels were starting to come over the top of the nuts could have been fatal I will never forger that .Look forward to see more of your videos thanks
Hi I used have a 1978 chevette like you I modified engine a pmc one really a auto sprint engine Peter maiden was a con man giving out 75 bhp a quick little engine a long list of other modified parts 😀
A bit late i know, I've been on me hollybobs for two weeks, this my 2nd week, and I've binged watched all your vids, absolutely awesome!! Keep up the good content! All time favourite car...Ford Anglia 105E, but anything really from the late 50's up to the early 80's, after that they started to get more ''electrical'' in builds for my liking. (From Mikky, in Scotland, on his wife's computer.....shhh!!!)
Thank you very much! Glad you are enjoying them! I'm pretty much the same as you, love all old cars, just love seeing them on the road. Love the Ford Anglias too. Thanks for watching 👍
I had an M reg Metallic Blue SL, Blue Vinyl seats and blue carpet and my 1st car was a 1968 HB in Grecian White which I bought for £60, but the M reg was my favourite.
Fantastic videos mate, I know nothing about cars but always find these kinds of videos amazing, keep these videos coming, Ford capri is my all-time fav car
Thank you! I'm no mechanic, I just like tinkering on cars, but appreciate it! Wouldn't have a clue about electric cars, don't think I've even been in one 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
I stumbled across your channel 3 days ago and have binge watched all your videos, excellent content very enjoyable. The problem now is I've got to wait around a week between episodes.
My dad had all 3 Viva models (HA, HB and HC) during my childhood, many happy memories, my favourite has to be the HB, love the shape and would love to own one now but they are like hens teeth, expensive to buy and parts are hard to find I believe, keep up the good work mate, loving your vids
Ah brilliant! Your Dad had good taste! Love the HB's too! They had great curves. Yes you are right the parts have been a right nightmare but I'm getting there. Thanks for watching 👍
I'm always thinking about getting a Mk1 Astra or maybe a Hillman Avenger. I've rebuilt a couple of Astras, I love the simplicity and how they feel to drive. Little pocket rockets that stick to the road and make me smile on the B roads.
I just found your brilliant channel! Coincidentally this weekend I got my own Viva HC back on the road after she had been off the road for the last 8 / 9 years. I ended up flushing out the fuel system too. I have only replaced the braided fuel hoses so far but plan on changing the main lines too so I am very glad I found your video! Getting it started for the first time in so long was a great feeling. After changing the solenoid and the battery, I connected a bit of hose to the fuel pump intake with a small funnel and tipped a small amount of fresh fuel in. After a bit of cranking she turned over. I was well chuffed. Then like I say I cleaned out the tank and flushed the old lines and did a normal service. Need a new exhaust next. I am guessing I'll have to go custom made stainless as I doubt you can get them anymore unless anyone knows where to get one? Awesome channel, glad I found it. It's just how the Viva was designed, to be worked on in your own garage with basic tools, by us normal guys at the weekend. Keep up the great work mate 👍👍
Thank you very much! Appreciate the comments! Thats brilliant - another HC going back on the road! I'm having a nightmare with the fuel system, working on it today 😀 Keep checking ebay, occasionally HC exhausts pop up on there. Good luck with your project! Thanks for watching 👍
Fighting you every step of the way, I hope you can sort this and unblock the pipe, Ford Cortina mark 2 was my favourite, most fun was a Ford Anglia, took the 997 out and dropped a 1500cc straight in, that was fun.
I'll get it sorted one way or the other! 😀 Very cool cars! Does sound like fun! I'd love to do an engine swap in the future. Thanks for continuing to watch👍
Loved the little HB Torana's from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤ The LC & LJ also made their way to my native NZ. Good fun having the six cylinder from larger Holdens. Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 Sorry to hear about your flooding 😪
My favourite British (non exotic) classic car is the Mk III Cortina. A 1972 Red Viva with 1.2L engine was our daily driver before we emigrated to Canada. My dad never took it to a proper garage so it was in pretty sad shape for most of its life. We could only take trips of under 3 miles.
I liked the Mk3 Cortina in South Africa 🇿🇦, they fitted theirs with the V6 Essex whilst the Australians fitted theirs with the Ford Falcon inline 6 ( two sizes ) 200ci ( 3300cc) and 250ci ( 4100cc ) watch for the bonnet bulge, larger engines for interstate travell. Incidentally, we in New Zealand 🇳🇿 got both British & Australian CBU models. We did assemble all marks of Cortina from CKD kits exported down under, with Pinto, 1600 ( mk3 ), and 2300cc in subsequent models. From Australian CBU Transit vans ( Mk2 ) RWD, we also had the choice of Pinto & Falcon engines ( 6 cylinder ). Here are the models for between Cortina Australia 🇦🇺 and UK 🇬🇧. The Mk3 ( TC ), Mk4 UK ( TE Australia ) and finally Mk5 UK 🇬🇧 ( TF Australia 🇦🇺) Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 😀 ❤
My first car was a fiat ritmo 1979, I'd say it started rusting on the production line and continued from there, it looked like your viva but was my daily car from 1989-92. Needed constant tinkering to keep it on the road 🙃
I just love cars , but my first car that I drove on the road was 76 Viva E four door saloon , sky Blue , it was quality then moved onto the Chevette , then 20 yrs of Vauxhalls before going VW Audi.
Ford Executive my dad had in late 60s , such a big car for the time. Glad to see you had more luck with the nuts in the tank than the Russian Army has had with their NUTS in TANKS in last 7 months 😁. I don’t see any problem using the cheap inline filters until your happy it’s all running well and then maybe upgrade to a few better quality ones. Cleaning garages is character building for young sons 😂 at least that’s what my dad told me 😉.
My old man had a dark brown Ford Executive in the mid 80's. We felt like royalty driving round our council estate in it. He sold it to a cousin who sprayed it bright pink and then wrecked it!
@@paulking5665 Sounds like what Les Anthony drove for the Beatles, that was a psychedelic painted 🎨 R.R, I have picture 📸 of that in my hallway outside my WC, R.I.P Les Anthony ( April 30,1933, d.May 21, 2020 ).
Les Anthony was John Lennons chauffeur, JL took many acquaintances in his R.R whilst taking many a LSD trips. John would frequent the "Speak Easy" and would lead Maurice Gibb down a fifteen year spiral of alcoholism 🍸 So much for history ! 👍👌🍺🍻🥃🌎🗽💚
I see you used the nuts and vinegar idea I told you about, hopefully it worked Ok for you. A car that I currently own and love is my 1987 Mercedes 190e 2.3-16 manual. I was out for a drive yesterday, and it really cheered me up, with all the work I put into the car. Cheers, Rob.
I did, thank you! It seemed to remove debris that I didn't even know was in there! I was in 2 minds as I thought it might be a bit of a nightmare getting the nuts back out but I found my magic sticky stick 😀 Love the 190e, very nice! Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Hi Steve, another great video 👍 Regarding the internal tank filter I'm running without one. I replaced the tank recently and being honest I hadn't noticed the filter had come off and was just loose in the bottom of the old tank....not until I'd already installed the new tank and fuel line. I've had no issues in the 1k miles covered since so I'm not stressing about it.
Thanks very much Chris! Yeah thats an idea, I'm going to try and unclog the filter tomorrow, but if I can't unclog it I'm going to maybe just run 1 or 2 inline fuel filters. I won't stress about it either 👍
Nice one Steve your getting there. Always the way when you go and work on your car it rains then stops when you go inside haha I would have another capri 2.8i special or 3.0s 👍
I think there is a 1 way valve in there to stop fuel returning to the tank when you switch the engine off, so yes it would seem blocked, try sucking the pipe.. cheers...
Had a few rebuilds…🤔but the one I’d have back is my Renault 5 turbo. It’s even still on the road💪🏼….. did do a 53 willys jeep…. Bit like a Mecca no Didn’t need to jack it up to get underneath 😂….
@@RetroRebuild Cheers mate. Gotta love a Nova, we're on building a Nova rally car, had the shell all dipped and rust treated, it's in epoxy primer now, hoping to get back on with it in the next few weeks 🤞👍
@@RetroRebuild Get the bairns on the garage tidy up job... you can lure them in with a 10 spot... then only hand over a fiver because of the half job you can claim they did... (hopefully they'll not read this comment and be onto the ploy).
So much appeal in old cars today, compared to new ones, suppose they're called classics now, but the old cars were so simple to work on, well most of them lol you could actually get your arms in the engine bay and a leg lol todays cars, your lucky if you can get fingers in lol I loved the hot hatch era in the 80's Golf GTI's, Pug 205 GTI ,XR2/3 ,wish i'd kept some of the cars from that era knowing the value now. MK1/2 ford escorts , RS, Mexico . Triumph Dolomite Sprint, Rover SD1
Would love a Triumph 2000 or Stag, my cousin had a two door version of yours mid eighties cracking cars, until the gear lever came off in his hand going around a bend in Bury it woke us all up a bit 🤣 good luck with yours mate.
Thank you very much! I've heard a few people mention the gear stick coming out believe it or not. I'll definitely be checking mine before I take her on the road after hearing this! 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
@@RetroRebuild No problem fella it brings back good memories of my yoof 😜 when you get her done will you give her a a new paint job (same colour hopefully) just that I'm a sucker for it looking spot on 👍
In line filters in engine bay keep an eye on them if they need changing then do. Also keep an eye on the connections of the filter so they aren't sucking air.
Loving the Viva resto! My mum had one just like yours from 76-84 MYV444L where are you now? My fav car is the Opel Monza GSE, I have had two of them the rust can be rampant if you can't afford restoration and I can't weld but if I won the lottery I would get one properly sorted.
haha, I had a look after you mentioned them and you were right there was a Mk3 (though I had never seen one) Have you seen the Late Brake show barn find edition with the Mk2 Granada Estate? Worth a watch 👍
Loving your channel mate started watching from the start on recommendation from @Dave’s-garage 👏🏻 my favourite retro are mk1 &mk2 escorts, sunbeams, avengers, Chevettes etc but liking your viva mate
My brothers 1st and 2nd cars were: a metallic blue hilman avenger And red hilman hunter but I had a mk3 Capri full of filler in the tips of the wings, fell out when swung round and hit a petrol pump😂
Morris 1100 traveller estate. For my favourite. Hb/HC Viva second I've had 4 of them . But for reliability my 1998 corolla estate my daily car still going strong .
Very cool! A few people now have said that they passed their tests in a Viva 👍 Good choice! Love a Vitesse, love the angry looking fronts on them 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
It looks like the tank pipe is blocked, you might be able to use a drill bit to clear it or some correct size rod with a chisel end, once the pipe is clear maybe able to push tank filter off pipe and use your inline filters in the section from the hardline to the pump (those fine mesh plastic filters can develop a hard varnish/lacquer across the mesh).
Favourite cars ummm, as a kid always loved a etype jaguar, but 20 year ago i had a jaguar series 3 xj6 it was 1986 c reg and omg I absolutely loved it gliding along on a cosy armchair floating on a cloud could best describe the drive for me, to be honest never really thought about it 🤣🤣,well fella another entertaining video from you and loving the viva as i have said before was my first car i owned, so what is your favourite car after the viva of course, keep smiling and look forward to next chapter mate
Thank you very much! A very cool choice of cars from you there! As for me the list is huge! But I love old Vauxhalls (particularly the Victor FD's) Chevettes, Mk 3 Cortinas. Just love old cars in general and love seeing them being put back on the road! 😀 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
@@RetroRebuild honestly love seeing your posts brilliant, i love loads of different cars also but jaguar's always loved, ive had xr3 couple of capris and Granada and motorbikes wish still had them the money they go for now unbelievable, take care and looking forward to seeing your next post fella
11:50 - Looks like that might vibrate the new pipe, work harden it, then make it brittle enough to fracture. I might be wrong but I would be temped to increase the lengh of the rubber pipe bud. All the best
I'm going to cutting the pipe back even further than where the original stopped as I'm putting an inline filter in there, but thank you very much for the hints and tips and thank you for watching 👍
Favourite cars I've had: 1973 VW K70 L 1973 NSU Ro80 1983 BMW 635CSi (kept it going 18 years; quite expensive) The one I have now: 1988 Citroën CX GTi automatic. Interesting technical problems occasionally. Your fuel tank blockage: is it possible to run a flexible rod through the tank outlet pipe that you showed us in the video? It might be a way of revealing exactly where the blockage is in the pipe.
@@RetroRebuild : I've always liked slightly weird cars. I blame it on the K70 which started it all. Hardly anyone's heard of it in the UK, and VW only built 800 right-hand-drive cars, so never a sales success here.
@@smhorseyeah me too always liked the weird stuff and the underdogs, I love the old vw's was the k70 the same as the early audi 80 or very similar either way lovely looking old motors .
@@RetroRebuild : the K70 wasn't actually designed by VW, but was inherited when NSU was absorbed by Volkswagen. It was the Ro80's piston-engined sister which became VW's first-ever FWD, water-cooled car. Launched 1971, the UK didn't get RHD cars until 1972, and we only had the 90hp 1.6 and then the faster 100hp 1.8 from about 1974 until 1975. They just didn't sell!

Very cool! Love all the old minis. Sounds like great memories 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
My grandfather had a K reg viva,it was immaculate, but I hated it at the time because he traded in a Mk2 Jaguar
That was some swap! 😀Thanks for watching 👍
That sounds absolutely mint mate! Good old Gerry Marshal, legend! Yes I agree those were the good old days! Thanks for watching 👍
I've got a 71 Hillman Avenger.
Only discovered your channel yesterday, I do love a Viva
Very cool, I love an Avenger! Thanks for watching 👍
Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1......1978 Mustard yellow with a proper 70's brown vinyl roof. Loved it but really wanted a Manta which I couldn't afford.
That sounds very nice! 😀 Love all the Cavaliers, like the Mantas too, been years since I've seen one 👍
Thank you very much! Very cool! Great memories. Thanks for watching 👍
HC increased clutch diameter to 7" for the 1256cc ohv, a big improvement to the HB 1159cc ohv 6" smaller clutch.
My first HB had thrust bearing rattle whenever activated 😎
I just lived with it.
Eighteen months later bought a much newer HC, ten years younger metallic bronze real stunning looker back in the day with quad lamps 🔦 at the front.
Later, I put over-riders & genuine reverse lamps 🔦 & lockable petrol cap.
Thanks for taking me back to the day 🙂
as a motor mecanic back in the 70s and 80swith all the equiment we could do a clutch on a hc in 30 mins
My dad had a Hillman Hunter then an Audi 100, both very good cars and the first I drove after the Viva in which I had my driving lessons.
👌
another excellent video, cheers.
Learning so much about how to fix a car from watching your videos
Fave classic Rover sd1 3500 preferably the vitesse our best loved family car
Thank you very much, thats great! Love the SD1's! They are on my wish list 😀 Thanks for watching 👍

Love your videos
Very cool first car! Love the old Escorts. Appreciate it, thanks for watching 👍
Took me 9 months to get my mk1 cavalier on the road and it had been driven in to the one and only owners garage in 1996 and not seen the light of day till last year! Definitely takes time.
Excellent! Love a mk1 cavalier! Yes definitely takes time (and money!) Thanks for watching 👍
So glad the front doors on the HC were bolt on for rust repairs.
HB two doors were a dog 🐕 to work on with welded hinges.
Rusty floors was always our major rust pain point. The hand brake bracket at the back where the cable splits always struck me as a crap design. It rusted stopping the cables moving and then eventually buckled. Yours actually looks still ok
I know what you mean, always thought it was a bit of an odd design! Luckily the floors in mine are solid from being well undersealed back in the day 👍
Excellent I think you're doing a great job. Bring back old cars so much better
Thank you very much! I agree! 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
Agreed! All cars look the same today, plastic bubbles. Cars back then had personality, you could spot each model a mile off. Bring back square lines and chrome I say!
I have a chrome bumper 74 MG BGT completely disassembled in my garage. Turns out putting it back together is harder than taking it apart :-/
🤣 I think a lot of people have been in the same boat where they've stripped a car down and just left it! Its very time-consuming! Your comment put a smile on my face 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
That feeling of " I can't remember how this goes back together....."
Hi mate Triumph Dolomite, super video as always, take care.
Thank you very much! Very cool choice! 👌 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Ramps matching the viva’s paint. That’s cool.
👍😀
Love the vids. My Dad had a HB and next door had an L reg HC like yours. Takes me back!😊
Thank you very much! Great memories 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
My favourite is a Vauxhall Viva HC. I have a lot of fond memories being in the back of them going for a hurrel. It's always been my ambition to drive one or even own one but I'm not mechanically minded so I would be terrible with it.
Good choice! 😀 Don't let being terrible stop you, have a go, you might surprise yourself! Thanks for watching 👍
I have a peugeot 405 1.9 sri 1991 one of only 42 sri models left. Good job on the fuel line.👍
Very retro cool, already guessed yours! 😀 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Few favourites, Morris Oxford, Triumph Herald, Cortina MK2 & 3 Viva mk1 and mk2 😊
All excellent choices! 👌 Thanks for watching 👍
favourite car Toyota Camry, I had 5 of them. last one had 330,000 miles on the clock still going strong.
Good old bullet-proof Toyotas! 👍
My first car was a viva 1200 gls red and brown due to rust loved it went like the clappers the starter used to jam spent lots of time rocking it in gear to free it up 😅 was heartbroken when it went got another the same as your one wasn’t the same tho
Very cool! 😀 I've had plenty of cars I've had to rock backwards and forwards due to dodgy starters 😀 Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching 👍
Your videos are great budy but i wish they lasted a bit longer .love watching the old viva can't wait to see it driving on the road .
Thank you very much! Did plan to make this one a bit longer but ran in to problems as usual! 😀 Thank you for continuing to watch 👍
So glad to see your indicator lens back on, drive shaft ( prop shaft ) on.
Glad you answered my question, your green reverse light wire ( feed ) goes under your car.
NZ boot loom incl redundant wire for aftermarket "Wipac" lamps 🔦 👌
Must show us boot lamp 🔦 switch close up, not available NZ back in the day.
I rigged up my own system with switch on latch & aftermaket viva hc number plate lamp to under parcel shelf c 1990 I think 🤔 🧨
I spotted your front bumper on the floor, must be the next 😉 project for a rainey day.

Keep up the good work 👍👏👏👏
Thank you very much! Very cool car! Thanks for watching 👍
Great Progress!! Favourite classic? Maybe the Jaguar XJ6 Series 1.....Cortina Mk3 too, and the Rover P6........also pretty much anything by BL, Vauxhall, Ford or Rootes!!
Thank you very much! Very cool list of cars there 👌 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
hi from nz and i have a 1975 Vauxhall Viva years it was a good car and its had a 1800 l motor in it
Hi to NZ! Ah sounds nice! Thanks for watching 👍
@@RetroRebuild yep and your are cool
Thank you very much! Great memories! Appreciate your comments. Thanks for watching 👍
Good choice 👌Love an old jag, I wouldn't say no to one! 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
Just found the channel and subscribed. My retro car is a triumph acclaim.
Thanks for the sub! Ah retro cool, old school bullet-proof triumph acclaims 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
Hillman imp for me, had 2 of them great fun and great memories too, simple to maintain and cheap as chips too. Love the bids great work
👌Cool little cars! Thanks for watching 👍
I always wanted an Imp.....never happened but have always been fascinated by them.
I had a £50 Triumph Dolomite 1500tc in 1983 wings where full of filler and chicken wire I loved it first car touring scrap yards brilliant best fun I ever had allways have a car I can enjoy messing with

Very nice! Sounds lovely! and love tartan interior. Thanks as always for your comments and for continuing to watch. Appreciate it! 👍
😀 I watch a lot of retro tv series just for the cars! Renault Fuego - thats a blast from the past! Thanks for your comments and thanks for watching 👍
Thank you very much! Thanks for the sub! Very cool first car! Love the Chevettes. Thanks for watching 👍
Recently discovered your channel, loving the content 👊
Thank you very much! Thanks for watching 👍
I had an M reg Metallic Blue SL, Blue Vinyl seats and blue carpet and my 1st car was a 1968 HB in Grecian White which I bought for £60, but the M reg was my favourite.
ooh very nice! love the HBs too! Thanks for watching 👍
Fantastic videos mate, I know nothing about cars but always find these kinds of videos amazing, keep these videos coming, Ford capri is my all-time fav car
Thank you very much mate! Appreciate it. Love a capri! Thanks for watching 👍
hell of a skill set, respect to mechanics fitters, where would we be without you lot , electric cars less of a challenge ?
Thank you! I'm no mechanic, I just like tinkering on cars, but appreciate it! Wouldn't have a clue about electric cars, don't think I've even been in one 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
I have a Sunbeam Rapier Fastback 1968 nearly ready for the road again
I remember you telling me about this! Very cool choice! Good luck with your project, thanks for continuing to watch 👍
I stumbled across your channel 3 days ago and have binge watched all your videos, excellent content very enjoyable. The problem now is I've got to wait around a week between episodes.
Thank you very much! Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching 👍
Just done exactly the same. Previous Viva owner but trying to get enough inspiration to get my MGBGT back on the road.
Ah thats brilliant, thanks very much for watching 👍
My dad had all 3 Viva models (HA, HB and HC) during my childhood, many happy memories, my favourite has to be the HB, love the shape and would love to own one now but they are like hens teeth, expensive to buy and parts are hard to find I believe, keep up the good work mate, loving your vids
Ah brilliant! Your Dad had good taste! Love the HB's too! They had great curves. Yes you are right the parts have been a right nightmare but I'm getting there. Thanks for watching 👍
that lovely pre coiled copper tube is perfect for a moonshine stil 😁.
I'm always thinking about getting a Mk1 Astra or maybe a Hillman Avenger. I've rebuilt a couple of Astras, I love the simplicity and how they feel to drive. Little pocket rockets that stick to the road and make me smile on the B roads.
Both of these cars are on my wish list 😀 I've been thinking about a Mk2 Astra as my next project 👍
Hello Steve, great work so far,the fuel line looks the part, my classic car is the Mini, the old shape to the Sports pack model.
Thank you very much! Love the minis too 👍
Vauxhall chevette is my favourite car closely followed by mk1 cavalier and allegro.
Very cool choices, I'd happily have any of those! 👍
Have a Riley 4/72 but do have a soft spot for Viva’s
Both excellent cars. Love the fins on the Riley 👍
Wow, the 4/72 is just about the finest-looking car ever made IMHO.......that rear end with the cut-off fins.......
You can’t go past a HB Torana, but a HC Viva comes pretty close. 😉 Another great video buddy!
Loved the little HB Torana's from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
The LC & LJ also made their way to my native NZ.
Good fun having the six cylinder from larger Holdens.
Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Sorry to hear about your flooding 😪
Yep. They get my vote too 👍
Already guessed yours! 2 very cool choices 😀 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
The Mk3 ( TC ), Mk4 UK ( TE Australia ) and finally Mk5 UK 🇬🇧 ( TF Australia 🇦🇺)
Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 😀 ❤
Cortina ( Falcon engined models ) service repair manuals by Australian publications "Gregorys" ( similar to Haynes ) Hardcover.👌👍🍺🍻🥃
Very cool choices! The Mk III Cortina is one of my favourites too. Thanks for watching 👍
My first car was a fiat ritmo 1979, I'd say it started rusting on the production line and continued from there, it looked like your viva but was my daily car from 1989-92. Needed constant tinkering to keep it on the road 🙃
🤣 Very cool memories! I haven't heard of one of those, going to have to google it to check it out! Thanks for watching 👍
@@RetroRebuild also known as the fiat strada in the UK.
I just love cars , but my first car that I drove on the road was 76 Viva E four door saloon , sky Blue , it was quality then moved onto the Chevette , then 20 yrs of Vauxhalls before going VW Audi.
I just love cars too! 😀 Very nice bunch of cars you've had! Thanks for watching 👍
Very cool! Thank you and yes agree with your Dad about getting the young ones to clean the garage 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
My old man had a dark brown Ford Executive in the mid 80's. We felt like royalty driving round our council estate in it. He sold it to a cousin who sprayed it bright pink and then wrecked it!
@@paulking5665 oh wow we must have lived on the same council estate 😂 , yeah I know exactly what you mean it was like a limo 👍🏻.

@@RetroRebuild Your videos are Gold, I did subscribe as well about a week ago. The work you do on your driveway with no lifts etc. is fun to watch.
Hi Steve, another great video 👍
Regarding the internal tank filter I'm running without one.
Thank you very much! Yes always seems to rain as soon as I get started! Love the capris too! Thanks for watching 👍
I think there is a 1 way valve in there to stop fuel returning to the tank when you switch the engine off, so yes it would seem blocked, try sucking the pipe.. cheers...
Thank you very much for the info! Don't want to give anything away but stay tuned for the next video 😀 Thanks for watching 👍

👌
Favourite classic has to be a Stag, followed by a Sunbeam Tiger, third is tough but for something different a Mk 3 Granada estate.
3 good choices there! 👌 I didn't know there was a Mk3 Granada Estate, but love all of the Granadas👍 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
@@RetroRebuild There wasn't a Mk3 you're right, I meant Mk2 - what happens when I'm sneakily watching videos and typing at work!
haha, I had a look after you mentioned them and you were right there was a Mk3 (though I had never seen one) Have you seen the Late Brake show barn find edition with the Mk2 Granada Estate? Worth a watch 👍
Rover SD1 (Series 1) a bit biased as I own two. 😁Another excellent video, have been following you from the start. Keep up the great content 👍
Thank you very much! Always had a thing for the SD1's 😀 Thanks for watching! 👍
@@RetroRebuild You'd love mine and my good pal James's collections then. Here are two of ours. th-cam.com/video/9CHB4nMC1J8/w-d-xo.html

My brothers 1st and 2nd cars were: a metallic blue hilman avenger
And red hilman hunter but I had a mk3 Capri full of filler in the tips of the wings, fell out when swung round and hit a petrol pump😂
3 very cool cars there! 👌 Great memories 🤣 Thanks for watching 👍
Morris 1100 traveller estate. For my favourite. Hb/HC Viva second I've had 4 of them . But for reliability my 1998 corolla estate my daily car still going strong .
👌 Very cool! Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
Use the inline filter. That what's on mucky two stroke outboards, and very rarely have trouble with them. Peace be unto you.
Past my test in a Viva drive a Triumph Vitesse now
Thank you very much for the tips - I'll keep these in mind when I'm working on getting it unblocked tomorrow 👍 Thanks for continuing to watch 👍
My fav is my Mums Lancia Beta Coupe 1979
Very nice! 👌
Favourite car?.Mines an Austin Allegro. I've got one on my channel. Right, plug over, lets get back to Vivas and pasties. Good times! :D
Already guessed your favourite!😀 I do like the Allegro's and yours is very tidy looking 👍
Favourite cars I've had:
1973 VW K70 L
1973 NSU Ro80
1983 BMW 635CSi (kept it going 18 years; quite expensive)
The one I have now: 1988 Citroën CX GTi automatic. Interesting technical problems occasionally.
Your fuel tank blockage: is it possible to run a flexible rod through the tank outlet pipe that you showed us in the video? It might be a way of revealing exactly where the blockage is in the pipe.
Very cool list of cars there! 👌 I love an old BMW. Excellent suggestion on the fuel tank, stay tuned for today's video 😀 Thanks for watching 👍
