There is a selenoid valve on the left of the carburettor, as you stand in front of the car looking into the engine bay. It has a spade terminal on it. It needs a 12v ignition feed. Without that the idle circuit in the carburettor is blocked of by the selenoid valve. Easisest way is to run a wire from the B+ post of the coil to it. The job of that selenoid is to cut fuel when the engine is shut down. therefore stopping any run-on which used to be a problem on carburetted cars of that era. Once you fit that, you'll be able to set a stable idle. You should not need to re-adjust the timing you already set.

Very enjoyable vid, Steve. We used to call those up and down revs, hunting. I would strongly advise real caution if the coil is leaking oil. The oil is needed to keep the coils cool during operation. If there isn't enough cooling oil the coil could overheat and perhaps explode. This might also explain the hunting as the high voltage could be varying. Take care.

    Alright mate 👍
Nah you'll not need to re-check timing for fitting a carb. I'd just put a quality rubber pipe straight from the pump to the carb, that's how the Escorts were, it'll be fine. Yeah if the's oil dripping from the coil replace it, I wouldn't relocate it. As other comments check for air leaks, I'd consider wiring up the solenoid, originally the Viva didn't have it but the new carb does, might make no difference but you can rule it out once checked. Also mixture screw all the way in, then out 1½ turns as a starting point. Plenty to go at on next tinkering day!!

First off all put the carb linkage back on, (good luck finding the pin) once your timing is set, that's it, no need to adjust it again.
The carb will be roughly adjusted from weber, but it will need some mixture tweaking, 1 1/2 turns out should be a good starting point, the book should give you a rough guide.
The high idle could be just carb set up or you have an air leak , trying spraying some brake cleaner round the intake manifold joints and carb, that'll tell you if you have any leaks.
Fuel line routing , do what suits you!
Prehistoric instruments , i have a few of those lol old school FTW

I'd put another fuel filter between pump and carb. I think you sucking air around the manifold after carb. Strip it all down and new gaskets. Good idea to set tappets and paint rocker cover while off. Could have play in the timing chain. Best to set timing on the run. Find the sweet spot. Have you got new spark plugs yet. Coil is ok where it is. Thought you had electronic ignition.. but I think you sucking air after carb. Look on freecycle. You can get old racking and 6 ft cupboards for free. That will clean up your garage. Good luck Man. Have a good one. Adios.

Hi Steve, dunno if it's me but of the setups you've tried so far using the Solex has been best (the car has been least driveable) the Weber may come good with some "fettling" but it really needs setting up on a rolling road to get it to it's best, is it worth now the pressure is off the Stromberg re-checking the settings to see if something was missed as they were fitted to vivas to give a bit more power whilst maintaining fuel economy (SL designation meant little more power (carb and twin port exhaust manifold and better trim) over the Solex, I personally woulg remount the coil to the inner wing as it'll run cooler, give better access to the engine and reduce a possible ignition source (engine fire) from near the carb, fuel pipe and fuel pump.

I don't think it'll be the timing - that just times when the spark occurs and although the new carb is on, it should only need a reset if it is drastically out and therefore firing at the wrong time - more likely to slow the engine. More likely to be the mix or the fuel volume - like sitting with a foot on the accelerator!!

If you feel you have the timing set as best you can, concentrate on what you have just changed. I have to wonder if by passing that small fuel pipe puts too much pressure into the carb. Check that coil, maybe that was causing the misfires previously, I never liked coils being mounted to the engine, that heat, but they did that I think to try and cut costs and avoid grounding issues. Not trying to tell you what to do, but maybe write down a list of what you have done, once you are happy, give it a rating and move on. Putting on that weber has introduced a wild card to the mix. Great presentation and video editing, entertaining content, like you I wish I had more time away from work, but that free time seems to cost us even more...

No need to set the timing again, if it was spot-on from the Zenith, I've never tried a Webber myself but I did use Pireburg twin choke on a 1256cc Chevette which was taken off a 1.3 litre Astra and it drove like a rocket.
With new carbs the main mixture screw should be capped off with a plastic cover, and you should only need to adjust the idle screw.
Is the carb for a 1.3 litre engine ?
I agree the coil would be better off screwed to the bulkhead or inner wing, anyway would of thought the Webber carb should perform quite well.
All the best I know you can do it, I have faith in you.😃
