    For me it was the best performance of Beethoven 9th Symphony I ever had the honor of playing 1st bassoon in the orchestra. Especially the last movement was the ONLY time that it was musically structured and especially well balanced. Usually it was just loud without any musical structure, only noise.

      In my opinion totally different to the recordings. For me the live experiences with MPO were a true shock in my life that I never felt again. A sound, a balance so difficult to explain...

      As a once-a-time bassoonist. I was very aware of your solo in the 4th movement. Your fully expressive counterpoint came forth. Celibidache with his deliberate tempos allows for each instrumentalist to have their unique say as well. Bravo, individually and collectively.

Einfach wunderbar!

      I feel that "every note is special" feeling especially with JS Bach. And Celibidache helps cure me of any residual "will to be finished" with a piece, whether it is Bruckner or Tchaikovsky, and his handling of the score allows me breathe freely within the work.

      @@BrucknerMotet, can you recommend recordings of Celibidache (or someone with similar thoughts on tempi) leading or playing Bach? Since I heard his music at first time in 1995, Maestro Celibidache became my only conductor.
    I have learned much about what the music is.
    His best-3 recording are Beethoven Symphony No.6, Symphone No.9 and Brahms Symphony No.1. Those are the perfection, beautifulness and what any conductor did not show me how musics give a value of life.

    Finalmente! Purtroppo a distanza di così tanti anni! Ma, soprattutto l'ultimo movimento svela una struttura a più voci che, di solito, passa inosservata....E lo dico senza essere un amante di Beethoven! Finalmente si capisce che musica aveva in mente! Esecuzione meravigliosa, di un'accuratezza orchestrale senza paragoni!

    Celibidache leads the _Adagio_ at 70 beats per minute-slower than many people's heart rates! At that tempo, no eighth note can be overlooked by either performer or listener (if s/he happens to have remained . . . uh . . . shall we say "alert" 😴. . . until that point in the performance). Not to be a naysayer to the unique interpretation of a great "artiste" with a unique and well defined _vision_, but I find in consuming this interpretation that Celibidache walks a fine line between what some would call "deliberate" and others "plodding" *extremely carefully*! I think it likely that only *he* ever developed the concepts and the skill to convince audiences of his thoughts on Beethoven's tempi in a paid performance!

    Uno sfarzo di suoni ! Eccellente il quartetto vocale soprattutto il soprano Helen Donath e il basso Peter Lika. Naturalmente i "tempi" sono quelli cari e favoriti a Celibidache ...10 minuti più lento di Toscanini ! Nell'"Adagio" confesso che ho dovuto fare uno sforzo di concentrazione pour ne pas "décrochez"!

      Gentilissimo Sg.Corsaro, sono d'accordo con lei... "da ascoltare assolutamente"; ma....ascoltare chi? Celibidache o Beethoven ! Certo l'interpretazione deve essere libera; ma Se Beethoven avesse voluto un tempo: "Maestoso" come nel primo movimento, lo avrebbe indicato nel manoscritto invece ,per il terzo movimento ha solo indicato: "Adagio molto e cantabile" . Non si tratta qui di oggettivare l'interpretazione; ma Beethoven a creato questa vita sonora dove ogni uditore ritrova il suo significato profondo che appartiene a lui solo, anche se è un grande interprete che la rivela. Quindi io sono d'accordo con Toscanini che si limitava a seguire scrupulosamente le indicazioni del compositore senza "dilatare" i "tempi". Cordialmente;

      La sua opinione è condivisibile, però, a ragion di cronaca, nemmeno Toscanini come nessun altro ha seguito scrupolosamente le indicazioni di Beethoven, poiché quest'ultimo in verità ha dato indicazioni sui tempi e la nona durerebbe circa 44 minuti seguendo queste indicazioni.

    Meraviglioso l'Adagio, comunque superato da tanti, ma tanti altri (Furtwängler in primis, ma anche Klemperer, Karajan e ... Salonen!). Piatto, inespressivo il primo movimento, discutibile lo Scherzo (e comunque privo di voli pindarici) e ORRIPILANTE il finale.

      You are very serious... I think the other conductors are too fast in the second movement. Here you hear it this very rhytmically and still lively. Further it is important to adapt into the accoustics. It is normal to play slower in Gassteig than in some other concert halls.

    Is this the only 9th with Celibidache available? The sound is terrible. No wonder he didn't like to record- putting the music at the mercy of the apparently deaf and musically ignorant. The 3rd mvt especially is a mash, with horrible balance and no clarity of the woodwinds ruining the beautiful second theme. The few places where it happens to sound natural make it clear this must have been a terrific performance if one could have heard it properly.
