I'm a 79 yr old guy who first heard this in the soundtrack of The L-shaped Room, a 1962 British film, dir. by Bryan Forbes, starring Leslie Caron & Tom Bell. Peter R Katin, was the soloist. The sad emotions I felt in 1962 (19), having recently said a final goodbye to my French girlfriend, are revived every time I hear this. Imagine how I felt leaving the cinema that evening so long ago. Thank you for stimulating my reply to you!

Celibadache & Barenboim, Brahms Whoa! Incredible!! What I would give to attend their rehearsals, their discussions of the score, of Brahms , of the orchestration, phrasing and more. The chemistry is there in plain sight. Then, after the performance to interview the section Principals. It would be a night to remember. To bring so much energy and intelligence to this performance, is, by Zeus, divine. ❤❤❤

And where was this gem hiding?!!? Good lord, I've been obsessed with Brahms' piano concertos forever, but this is like hearing Concerto No. 1 for the first time, all over again. Goosebumps, tears, soul rendered to a puddle.
Our Maestro Barenboim, who conveys Beethoven like a reincarnation, obviously also delivers Brahms in a no-holds-barred performance that cleaves through our every layer to the core. This is more cathartic than a lifetime of therapy. Can't wait to hear No. 2, also from this series.

i listened quite a few of him conducting various pieces and comparing with other conductors i repeatedly find, his 'sound' has a degree of clarity and much less noise coming from orchestra, as a reply to your possible question: well, how is he so special from other conductors? that clarity is the class difference in conducting, and you need to be special to achieve that in this stratosphere job area in all music jobs

Zimerman, Pollini, Weissenberg, Arrau and Barenboim all performed and recorded this work. I like all of these recordings. They are vastly different and it is a good idea to listen to them all.

Having got a copy of Daniel Barenboim Playing Both the Brahms Piano Concertos 1 and 2 with the New Philharmonia Orchestra Conducted by Sir John Barbirolli first Pressing's which came out in 1968 I can rate this Performance equally as good as those two Recording's as you never get a bad Performance only a Brilliant one from Daniel Barenboim and the Music of Brahms suits Daniel Barenboim and I meant what I said in My other Comment
