I am such a big fan of the first Mini and was super excited for this one. Now that everything is done however I'm disappointed and cancelled my pre order. It's a solid lineup and in a bubble I might still be excited but comparing to what they put on the Mega Drive Mini 2 or the original Genesis Mini and I feel let down. For the Mega Drive Mini 2, they're getting 20 Sega CD games (the biggest selling feature for this in my opinion) and that includes some of the very best with Popful Mail and the Lunar Games. The US is only 12 and that includes garbage like Sewer Shark and Night Trap (worth playing once if you've never played before but not much fun). As someone who had the CD add on as a kid with a couple of lousy games (like Sewer Shark and Double Switch) I really hoped this would be an opportunity to showcase what the CD add on could do but I only care for 5 of the 12 CD games included. As for the cartridge games, the first mini had absolute classics from the best developers like Konami, Capcom and Disney so I was hoping for more of those on the second (Rocket Knight Adventures, Snatcher, Aladdin, Gargoyles, Quack Shot, Mercs, etc). Or maybe similar to Monster World IV, a release of a game that wasn't translated to English and maybe we'd get Twinkle Tale or Panorama Cotton. No such luck. Then of course is the cost. The original was $80 and the Mega Drive Mini 2 was about $85 in Japan but we HAVE to pay shipping which bring the cost to about $130. Only one controller this time and with 60 games included I can't say it's a bad deal but it feels like a kick in the pants and feels like they valued quantity over quality for the US release. Oh well...

@@RetroGamerBoy Hey Mike. Just saw today there will be a separate PAL region Mega Drive Mini 2 (though still the same game list and features as the North American release). I thought that the Europe version would have the best of both worlds. Some games from Japan and some games from US. Why it will follow the US lineup entirely kinda has me scratching my head. It's sad that the PAL version would miss some great Sega CD games like the Lunar series.

I think the EA games are really expensive to licence. I was amazed they managed to get Desert Strike. Most people will mod the console to add their own games.
Hah! oh god, the mini tower of power! Love the little bits and bobs, but yeaa, not a fan of that Japan-style slide switch. Any idea if they're doing additional runs of the 32X/SCD attachments?
What everyone needs to know at the end of the day, Genesis mini 2 it's just a cheap option for people who don't want to spend money on actual Hardware or an Everdrive Pro or Mega SD which is the better option for people who has money to spend.
Ya I think it fits a gap like you say for those that want to experience the physical console but without the cost. However you just know that scalpers will try sell these for more than the original hardware.
It looks very collectible, but as you say, I'll stick to my original hardware for the authentic 90's SEGA experience! I just hope we can get those new roms (especially Space Harrier 1) and play them on Everdrive. I am intrigued by the weird huge controller, as I am very much into peripherals for my consoles... I doubt it'd worth it though...
@@Gameboy-Unboxings Yeah, the "model" looks pretty, but while I understand you appreciate it as a collector, I'd much rather buy stuff to use it. To each its own!
Licencing games is the challenge they have. They will have a budge that will allow them to get at least a 15% ROI and some licences like Konami games are so expensive that it's not feedable.
Already excited enough for the Mini 2--but the add-ons? Oh geez, this thing will cost us so much money just for sexy display purposes! lol I'm looking forward to so many of these games--being able to revisit so many classics via ease but also having access to some games I likely wouldn't have otherwise had the chance to play outside of other emulation means.
I wonder why they don't release the full Mega Drive?? A mega drive that runs SEGA32X and SEGA CD games AND SEGA MÉGA DRIVE VIA SD CARD. IT WOULD BE VERY COOL!!
It would be amazing. But the cost would be high. They would need to increase the RAM and a number of other components in the mini. Modern consoles sell at a loss's but that is because the games have to pay a royalty to the platform owner. So that's how they make their money back. Obviously mini console's are a single purchase, so they have to be profitable from the outset.
Cool product but the lack of lunar titles is disapointing and the japanese mega drive mini 2 will not have the translations in english I guess I will still pick up the european version when it gets announced. I would also like to see some of the extras getting released outside of japan officially like the Mega CD and 32x add on
I love my retro games but like most have lack of room, I have every mini released so far (modded) including the evercade vs and all carts, so these are more convenient for me, however I was considering start collecting master system when move but wouldnt know where start (I play modern too like most and usually do retro Sundays with minis with my 9yr old) my 9yr old wants ps5 for crimbo so I told him if he can beat nes tmnt I would get him one... I know that's evil lol
🤣 Brilliant. I need to do that with my kids. Master System is great to collect for with some nice games. It's a console that is still relatively affordable to collect for if you buy the games you enjoy. It does get a tad expensive once to try go for a full collection.
I'm not getting one either Mike. I've got an original non-TMSS Genesis, with Scart out into a converter that outputs 720p. My $99.99 more well spent on the Petscii Robots & Life on Mars: Genesis.
It means nothing. It's a made up word that came through as a translation error when I was working on a PlayStation game back in 2002. Since then I've used it all over the place.
As soon as Genesis Model 1 has been released I always loved to own one as soon as it released i guess 3 years ago, however as soon as i wanted to buy it in this dump it was all sold out everywhere and i never managed to get one in time However my PC is able to emulate Sega Genesis way more accurate than these mini boxes but i wanted one for cosmetics and place it in my shelve
I understand what you mean. Its cool to have 1/4 scale model with a 1:1 replica joypad. It's all the fun of the original without the cost. But if it was had to get the first one then this one is going to be impossible.
@daniel scott Audio would get way more accurate if u play the roms on BlastEm However u need a modern PC with decent hardware in order to play with this Emulator
There are going to be people who buy it just to rip the roms off to put them onto an EverDrive to play on original hardware. Like the new better Roms for Space Harrier I & II with sprite scaling.
Disappointing imho. Not a single Konami game in either SKU. Bizarre choices of games (a lot of Japanese are actually pre ordering the western version). Seems like quantity over quality. And the worst of all: if you buy it in the UK it has Genesis branding instead of mega drive. Would much prefer to see Sega/M2 continue their work with the sega ages lineup and start porting some 32-bit classics
Yup I'm really disappointed that we don't get a PAL version of the console, especially as PAL territories were where the console and the brand were more popular than Nintendo, or at the very least neck and neck.
The attention to detail is disgustingly unnecessary. The money spent on the add on plastic pieces would be better spent on a wider game line up. I’ll probably still get the base model but won’t get any add ons.
5:38 This opinion is so rare among Genesis's fans... Overall it is a very good game. Nobody can deny that. But it is far from being a great game... You can't make a Zelda-clone that easily...
@@RetroGamerBoy Of course! But it is still immature to feel the need to push a game you love into everybody (I am not saying it applies to any of us). There are some bad games that I enjoyed and played for a while (Bart vs The Juggernauts for example). I still can separate my personal experience from the exigence of reviewing a game...
Same old, nothing new. Whats next? Sega MD/Genes mini 3 with 63 games build in, but with 10 games from 32X? LOL. But joking aside, why the same product as before? Wouldn't it be better if Sega released the same hdmi console (Sega MD/Genesis CD/32x) on the market, but which can accept physical media (32x cartridge and CD). That would be great. With that alone, you could play these new games from Indie developers on real cartridges or CDs, and not be limited by these 53 built-in old games. BTW these new games (in the last few years) coming out for the original Sega MD/Genesis are really superb and if Sega made the same console that accepts physical media (cartridge and CD), then it would be interesting to see what kind of games indie developers would make for that Genesis/CD/32x combo. Best regards.
That would cost too much. However, to reply to your first question: the Mega Drive (Genesis), was the ONLY SEGA console that was successful in North America. So, SEGA keeps milking it again and again (they released a dozen of Genesis retro compilation over the years and not a single collection of their legendary arcade games).
Cost too much? I don't know how clear I was. I don't know why it is expensive to put a cartridge input? (Or install a CD drive in the device? - this is probably a more slightly expensive solution). I was thinking if a small company like Hyperkin can sell a retro console with even 3 ports for different cartridges (RetroN) for a small price, why can't Sega make the same device? It also occurs to me that AtGames have a cartridge port in their emu console. Also there are other Chinese clone consoles that have a cartridge slot. Sega has created emulation software, they just add a cartridge input in device and thats it. Regards.
@@BlueHedgehog12345678 Because then Sega should also produce the cartridges, and the market is too small for it to be profitable for a big company like Sega, in my opinion. Evercade is doing what you proposed (in fact I bought their "VS" system), but they're a small company, I'm sure their sales volume is pretty small overall.
It's a good idea. I'm guessing Sega don't want to deal with the after market support these types of console's require. There is also no secondary market sales. So for them it's probably to much effort for little return.
I havent felt as excited about this mini, seems meh to me. Also as with everyone else has said, this needs Snatcher, im not sure what the issue is, maybe its Konami and the fallout with Hideo Kojima years ago. Thankfully i put Snatcher on the 1st mini when that got hacked using Project Lunar.
It all comes down to licencing and what their budget is. It may be that Konami will not licence the game or that they do not have the rights to licence the game. Or they are asking a billion dollars for it.
WHy are you excited for this trash? at this point they should be releasing Mini Consoles with every game ever released included on it,.. which is what anyone should do to their Snes Genesis or Ps1 mini they already have,.. just load them up with the roms, because that is all these are, Emulators with limited amounts of games in them. Overpriced trash...
I'm always happy to see people support my hobby. As a AAA games developer for 2K, Unisoft, Microsoft, and PlayStation I can tell you that the big problem with your suggestion is licencing. This is very complex and very expensive. Take Loaded on the PS1 for example. This game could be licensed for a few hundred thousand dollars, but it also uses licenced music which also need be relicensed. So you start to incur costs that make the console to expensive. Games companies need to make profit to continue to make games.
I appreciate the effort but what’s pissing me off is all these literally useless bits of plastic being sold for obscene money just to rinse more money from people. They literally do nothing at all, what would anyone truly want or need with a fake CD and cartridge that just sit there doing nothing? They don’t even look nice like the SOR4 metal cart that came with the collectors edition. This is just stupid.
Everyone has different tastes and the mini console's clearly have a strong fan base. But they are not for everyone. Gaming is so diverse that there are no bad or useless games. Except for Art Alive, that game was made by accounts.😅

Ya I think it fits a gap like you say for those that want to experience the physical console but without the cost. However you just know that scalpers will try sell these for more than the original hardware.
I might think about this because of OutRun, OutRunners, Virtua Racing, Hang On and the Sonics. Probably after the supply chain issues are resolved.
I'm not sure they are doing multiple runs of the console. I hope they do.
I changed my mind about it.
correction it not Earthworm Jim but Earthworm Jim 2...on the Sega Genesis mini 2.
Yup, I think I covered that in the footage and withe the game logo. But yes I forgot to say "two" there is always little mistakes this old man makes😅
Yeah I've never bought any of the mini consoles as i have the original hardware as well. I think I might get this one though to just keep new in box.
@@Gameboy-Unboxings Yeah, the "model" looks pretty, but while I understand you appreciate it as a collector, I'd much rather buy stuff to use it. To each its own!
You can still pick up the original controller on eBay. I'm not sure how much it goes for now.
word is space harrier 2 features smoother scaling
Very true, I forgot to mention that.
Will probably buy one, as I am a massive SEGA fan. But I have to say that the game selection is a bit disappointing.
You should appreciate the fact that Capcom and SNK license their games on here. As far as I know this is the best mini list you can ever get
Licencing games is the challenge they have. They will have a budge that will allow them to get at least a 15% ROI and some licences like Konami games are so expensive that it's not feedable.
We need batman on it. I still listen to the soundtrack now
Which one, the original?
Already excited enough for the Mini 2--but the add-ons? Oh geez, this thing will cost us so much money just for sexy display purposes! lol
I'm looking forward to so many of these games--being able to revisit so many classics via ease but also having access to some games I likely wouldn't have otherwise had the chance to play outside of other emulation means.
Do you have all the minis Tom? What am I saying. Of course you do.
@@RetroGamerBoy Oh, come on now. We don't have the Shonen Jump gold Famicom mini or the C64 mini, so no. But the rest...yes... Yes sir.
Cool product but the lack of lunar titles is disapointing and the japanese mega drive mini 2 will not have the translations in english
I guess I will still pick up the european version when it gets announced. I would also like to see some of the extras getting released outside of japan officially like the Mega CD and 32x add on
It's all going to be in limited quantities for Europe unfortunately.
@@RetroGamerBoy That's fine by me. I will just grab one as soon as the pre orders get announced
I want a mini dreamcast 😔
Everyone does. How cool would that be.
I'm not getting one either Mike. I've got an original non-TMSS Genesis, with Scart out into a converter that outputs 720p. My $99.99 more well spent on the Petscii Robots & Life on Mars: Genesis.
Fair enough 👍
I would like to see, Microsoft + sony + nintendo + sega = joint forces team up and make a super ultimate console together. 🤝💯💥✔🔥
They would make it and then that's all we would have as they would have killed off all the competition.😁
That would definitely cause a real crash in the industry
What is a ずぎご in the title?
It means nothing. It's a made up word that came through as a translation error when I was working on a PlayStation game back in 2002. Since then I've used it all over the place.
As soon as Genesis Model 1 has been released I always loved to own one as soon as it released i guess 3 years ago, however as soon as i wanted to buy it in this dump it was all sold out everywhere and i never managed to get one in time
However my PC is able to emulate Sega Genesis way more accurate than these mini boxes but i wanted one for cosmetics and place it in my shelve
I understand what you mean. Its cool to have 1/4 scale model with a 1:1 replica joypad. It's all the fun of the original without the cost. But if it was had to get the first one then this one is going to be impossible.
@daniel scott Audio would get way more accurate if u play the roms on BlastEm
However u need a modern PC with decent hardware in order to play with this Emulator
There are going to be people who buy it just to rip the roms off to put them onto an EverDrive to play on original hardware.
Like the new better Roms for Space Harrier I & II with sprite scaling.
Very true. We may even see some Repro carts.
I don't think they will make very many of the add-ons. Which means they will sell for more than the original hardware.
5:38 This opinion is so rare among Genesis's fans... Overall it is a very good game. Nobody can deny that. But it is far from being a great game... You can't make a Zelda-clone that easily...
Personally I think if you play it all the way through its short comings are apparent. But that is just my opinion and games are very subjective.
Good thing I already preorder it earlier on Amazon! ^-^;
For the win
I'd buy that for a dollar
🤣 I think everyone would. Also one of the best sound bites to come out of a movie ever.
No Road Rash or Raiden TRAD or Monaco GP - Cmon!
I suspect the licence fees for those were quite high.
No shin megami tensei no Romance of three Kingdom no snatcher.... T_T
Those are very expensive games to licence. I'm guessing they had a set budget to licence games and so they had to pick games that fit that.
Sega dropped the ball with the selection of games for the Megadrive 2 mini. No buy for me.
I seen quite a few people unhappy with what those chose to put on. What would you like to have seen?
If it can be hackt usb all sage cd games im in 2 games i woud like 🙁
It what people did the the first one.
@@RetroGamerBoy realy thort it was only psx clasic ive got to get one for all mega cd games
I'd be all over these retro consoles but they're small and that kills the retro feel for me.
They won't be for everyone. The pads are authentic though and I found that this adds a lot to the experience.
Lol. Aren't collectors hoarders?
You have a good point 🤣
