A little late to the party. The Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) is my favorite game system of all time. Love the games, history behind it and the M1 was the first console I purchased with my own money. The Genesis 2 was my favorite design but it’s AV is far inferior to the M1. So I had the “Triple Bypass” mod preformed and use HD RetroVision component cables. Now the AV is vastly superior to my M1. IMO get whatever model appeals to you and have the Triple Bypass done. It’s that incredible .
Choosing the mark 2 over the mark 1 is a Sega sin ;-) Not only is the audio encoding unbeatable on the mark 1, but it also touches all of the right nostalgia buttons! The '2' always felt like a step down, especially when considering the tower of power you could turn the '1' into :-O
I only recently got my first ever MD 2 and MCD 2. Up until that point I never played on the console. I do wish though that my MCD MK1 was as fast as loading as the MCD MK2. It's only a few seconds but it makes a difference, to me anyway.
I have an MD mini and have modded the hell out of it and have the entire SG1000, Master System, MD, Game Gear, Sega Mega CD and 32X libraries cheapest way to do it. Collecting is far to expensive these days, but good video well done.
Worth purchasing a Genesis/Mega Drive any day, week, month, year, you name it Mike. 8^) One of the coolest attachments I always thought was brilliant on Sega's part was the Master System converter. Excellent thinking on Sega's part. I felt Nintendo should've done so for the SNES. But then again at the time, they introduced the front loader NES unit and was so cheap to buy brand new, it wouldn't make sense to offer it to the public.... BUT the Super Game Boy on the other hand, that was worth it seeing you can play games on the SNES. 8^) Anthony..
I agree the power base and backwards compatible Mega Drive was a brilliant idea. The super game boy was amazing, I love mine. But I would love to have seen a NES add-on for the SNES.
Mega Drive MK1 + MCD2 + 50/60hz mod + Mega Everdrive Pro + Retrobit 6-button Pad + OSSC HDMI Adapter is my final choice for Mega Drive gaming i am happy with....
@@RetroGamerBoy thanks! The price of the Everdrive Pro is pain, but having 100 save slots per game, quick handling and customized menus just feels right...
My TOP Megadrive games: Sonic 2, Street of Rage 2, Shinobi 3, Golden Axe, Quackshot, X-men 2, Phantasy Star 4, Disney´s Aladdin, Mickey Mouse World of Ilusion, Ninja Turtles Hyperstone.... those are accesible, great graphics and sure fun, the rest of the catalogue of the megadrive are better games but more hardcore
No comments about sound, without modding the MK1 (HD Graphics variant) has the best audio . There are mods to correct this and remove jailbars 👍 Also of you don't have one I highly recommend the Analogue Mega SG

As someone who didn't have a Mega Drive back in the day, maybe it would have been a better idea to get the Mini version than grabbing myself a real Model 1. Nonetheless, I probably won't be getting rid of this and at least it doesn't have the same high prices as SNES
I think the Mini is a great idea for anyone wanting to experince the console. You can also by the collections for modern consoles which may be even cheaper.
There are 2 versions of that Cyber Razorcut ad. This is the second one. The other one has less delay and effects on the voices. And when the Barber says YES it's quieter. You see the Kid at the end as well wanting a mech suit. You can see it here th-cam.com/video/E36JA1meigk/w-d-xo.html
I own a Genesis 3; I don't want to come off as rude, but it being third party is a misconception. While it wasn't assembled/marketed directly by them, its parts were manufactured by Sega. It has the guts of a late-revision MD2, which has all of Sega's marks, with 1998 copyright (now in all fairness, you really have to either disassemble one or look at photos of the PCB to know for sure). Otherwise, this is a great video. I've been an MD fan for a long while and have several revisions of the thing, including a Nomad and Multimega/CDX.
Third party in the games industry refers to a different company from the parent company publishing or distributing the product. So for example I created The Getaway for PlayStation. This was a 1st party game. But in Japan it was published by Capcom, and so in Japan it's a 3rd party game.
@@RetroGamerBoy Right, I do understand that. However, it's still a Sega-manufactured product (albeit severely stripped down). I argue it's a good little machine, either way.
I don't have one, but a lot of friends do and they love them. Personally I love original hardware and playing on CRT, but if I had an opportunity to get an SG I probably would.
@@RetroGamerBoy did mine through a friend of friend gave him all my mini consoles for like a month or so and he did them all with hundreds upon hundreds on each and the NES one has 800 plus around 250 master system too... well chuffed so gave him 100 quid and bought his beer for a night lol
I got my mom a Sega Genesis for Christmas and it won't show up on screen. I got her sonic and knuckles and I was led to believe you can play it without having sonic 3 or 2 attached to it. I still can't get it to work and it was a Christmas gift today
It works without a cartridge in it. The cartridge connectors may be dirty. Also it depends on how you are connecting the console to the TV and what TV you are using.
@@RetroGamerBoy I tried it on 2 flat screen tvs then I went and used my old school TV and that still didn't work. I also used a HDMI adapter and nothing. The TV is getting the signal but nothing is showing on screen. How would I clean it properly
To clean the cart you need some isopropyl and a cotton bud. It my be your TV, the console will not work on a modern TV unless you art using a proper Scart to HDMI convertor or a line doubler converter.
@@RetroGamerBoy I went into my bathroom and got a cotton swap and rubbing alcohol and went to town on cleaning it and it did start up. They didn't even bother cleaning the game before shipping it. This is the 2nd time they have refused to clean the product I've ordered
Did Mike really just make a mistake when recounting the release dates of the Mega Drive? Or, and hear me out on this, did he just let slip that, on an alternate timeline, the Mega Drive was actually released in 1998? He secretly has access to an actual working Delorean, traveled back in time to the mid 80s and left a Mega Drive on the steps of Sega HQ so they could reverse engineer it, all so he would have the privilege of playing one in his youth? I don't know about you, but it's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with....
I live in the states and I grew up with the small sega genesis but mine had 24 bit on it why no one on the net refers to the small one from the 90’s as a 24 bit console but I distinctly remember the 24 bit writing on the console
I have no idea what that could be. Consoles increased processing by a factor of 2 so 32bit was the next gen after 16bit. Maybe you had an aftermarket console / unofficial release ?
I love the Mega Drive some things I think need to be added here the model 1 Mega Drive is only capable of stereo sounds if you use the headphone jack connected to a tv it will just have mono sound the model 2 Mega Drive can do native stereo sound on a stereo capable CRT If you don't have a CRT you can also go for clone systems like the Mega Retron HD which does some fantastic work for a budget clone the Retron 5 is also a viable option as it plays Mega Drive games absolutely brilliantly except games that use the 9V pin in the original Mega Drive this encludes Virtua Racing and Sonic & Knuckles(the lockon funtion. the game itself plays great) due to differences between the PAL and NTSC video format (PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz) some PAL games run slower than they would in NTSC this includes games like Hellfire and Mega Man the Wily Wars the Retron 5 autofixes this issue and makes games run at their intened framerate my personal favorite clone is the japanese 16Bit MD Plus which is a Nomad like clone just a bit larger than the original gameboy advance it doesn't have stereo sound or a second controller port and unfortunatly only plays japanese Mega Drive games and games without region lockout but I still find the system cool because of the good screen quality and formfactor when it comes to games you NEED to play streets of rage 2 just the best beat em up of the 16bit era with a soundtrack from the gods(which is also available on almost every sega compilation for modern systems) if you want a different expirience from the SNES library of games I recomand most of the shooters on the mega drive like empire of steel, hellfire and zero wing if you want something more simular to the SNES you can only grab some of the action RPGs for the Mega Drive like Solei and Story of Thor there is no shortage of amazing games for your Mega Drive GO GET EM!!!
I'm gonna buy a mega drive at the on halloween I already buyed the mega games 2 cartridge with Streets of Rage Golden axe and shinobi 2! Should I buy a mark 1 or mark 2?
@@RetroGamerBoy that's the one I'll get and later on I might get the mini as well but my only tv is a crt so I might need a small affordable hdmi compatible tv as well for that
I am a little bit confused about genesis and megadrive Although i used to play megadrive a lot in my childhood.I am thinking that Can we play Genesis games on a MegaDrive Console and vice versa? whats the difference between these two consoles?
The Genesis is technically different and has a larger catalogue games. There are a large number of games that are region locked and won't work on your MD / Genesis. The Genesis is NTSC 60hz and the MD is either JNTSC, PAL 50hz, or PALB. These different standards also affect your ability to play games across the hardware revisions. There are ways around this though.
The Mega Drive could play online multiplayer games. Cyberball is a peer to peer game and can still be played online on the MD today. Some of the later releases and some of the new Mega Drive games don't run. I'll get a list together. It's only a few, like maybe 3.
I did not understood the part where you said Mark 1 will not play some modern games made fore Genesis 2. For example what kind of games will it not play?
It's been a while since I went through them. Fight For Vengence does not work on a MK1 Gen1, I think there is an EA game and a blue label game that also don't work but I need togo through the collection and test them again.
@@RetroGamerBoy yo should pick one up dude, they are already being resold on Amazon for £165, but you might still find them at retail price in large shopping centres.

Am I deluded or have good taste ? Haha Love your content dude,.see you Wednesday at live at the arcade !!!
It's the same with Vinyl records, or hard back books, or VHS tapes. People like to collect and have a physical attachment to things. Physical entertainment is now mainly a hobby with games being the last mass media to have a large commercial physical presence, but that to will be a fully digital medium. There will always be new physical things to buy but it will be for the hobby collectors like us who enjoy open a box and putting a cart into a console.

No way that's awesome. I've managed to get most of the sports games out of the way. The PAL variants are hard because you need to look at the countries they were released in to have a chance of buying them.
@@RetroGamerBoy Exactly! From what I've heard the Mega Drive games have different hard games to come by, and vice versa with the Genesis. I hope you achieve your goal so soon! Good luck mate! 👍🏻💯
Excellent video and great recommendations. I have the mini and it’s fantastic and got me fully back into retro gaming. I wanted a console that also worked with my hdtv and bought the mega retron hd. I couldn’t bring myself to spend $200 on the analogue mega.
I'd love a Mega SG, they are just too expensive though.
I love my megadrive mini, I sold my collection a few years back, So was gutted it did not come with S3 and Knuckles, Really happy it can be modded
Are you going to get it modded?
@@RetroGamerBoy Yeah its fully modded now!
Nice picks. I'd have added road rash but apart from that, you're spot on imo. Also retro protect sent me a free game when i ordered 250 xbox sleeves. Really nice guys.
Wow that's amazing. What game did you get?

If you are new to collecting, the SEGA 6-pak cartridge offers easily the most bang for your buck.
I know there are multiple versions, but here in North America it contained: Sonic the Hedgehog, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Super Hang on, and Columns
The multi game carts were excellent for new players on the console. They offered so much value.
I've owned my Mega Drive 1 since 2016 and my Mega Drive 2, 32X and Nomad since 2021 :)
AHH man you have a Nomad, I'm very jealous.
Great video. I sold my Genesis console and games many years ago and now play Sega games via emulator.
Nice, what emulator and hardware do you use?
@@RetroGamerBoy I use K Fusion for Master System, Genesis, 32X, and Gamegear games. I haven't tries Sega CD games yet. Luckily these games can be played on almost any computer so my FX8320 CPU and Radeon 7950 3GB GPU do the job just fine. I also emulate NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, Gamecube, and Wii U games. 😊
I recently bought a mini from Japan, just in the process of modding it.
Are you getting the Mega CD and 32X add ons
A little late to the party. The Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) is my favorite game system of all time. Love the games, history behind it and the M1 was the first console I purchased with my own money. The Genesis 2 was my favorite design but it’s AV is far inferior to the M1. So I had the “Triple Bypass” mod preformed and use HD RetroVision component cables. Now the AV is vastly superior to my M1. IMO get whatever model appeals to you and have the Triple Bypass done. It’s that incredible .
I completely second this. I'm getting another console in to mod. I might save one that's been dumped and see what I can do with it.
Thanks! This was very informative.
No problem
Choosing the mark 2 over the mark 1 is a Sega sin ;-) Not only is the audio encoding unbeatable on the mark 1, but it also touches all of the right nostalgia buttons! The '2' always felt like a step down, especially when considering the tower of power you could turn the '1' into :-O
Also, the sheer amount of add-ons for the mark 1is insane. I urge you to reconsider :-)
I only recently got my first ever MD 2 and MCD 2. Up until that point I never played on the console. I do wish though that my MCD MK1 was as fast as loading as the MCD MK2. It's only a few seconds but it makes a difference, to me anyway.
@@RetroGamerBoy never knew there were actual performance gains between the mk1 and mk2 peripherals, interesting.
I have an MD mini and have modded the hell out of it and have the entire SG1000, Master System, MD, Game Gear, Sega Mega CD and 32X libraries cheapest way to do it. Collecting is far to expensive these days, but good video well done.
Yup the mini is the best option for most people and it great value for money.
Worth purchasing a Genesis/Mega Drive any day, week, month, year, you name it Mike. 8^)
One of the coolest attachments I always thought was brilliant on Sega's part was the Master System converter.
Anthony..
Sweet setup. I need to get an Everdrive Pro.
Yup for this list I tried to keep to games that were under £10/$10 for the cart and under 20 for CIB. This rules out most of the great RPGs
No comments about sound, without modding the MK1 (HD Graphics variant) has the best audio . There are mods to correct this and remove jailbars 👍 Also of you don't have one I highly recommend the Analogue Mega SG
I tried to keep it light on the tech stuff, but yes you are right. And the Mega SG is a great piece of kit.

Hi all
Thank you really best video 🎩👍
It's a great console.
Lol… I have the original Mega games 2. Good choice. Mine came with my sega megadrive. :)
I still need to get most of the Mega games.
Huh, I remember that. 😁
@@RetroGamerBoy you worked on the Getaway? What capacity?
Do you have a mega sg? Really trying to understand whether I should go original console convert to hdmi or mega sg ?
I don't have one, but a lot of friends do and they love them. Personally I love original hardware and playing on CRT, but if I had an opportunity to get an SG I probably would.

I got a mini, and model 1-2. The model 3 is elusive and hard to find IMO
I've heard the MK3 is a challenge to get hold of.
Uhh, the box you're holding is for "Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair". That one is a SHMUP, not a RPG.
Ya I realise that. I screwed up during filming and editing.
@@keshang_laow8325 I'm glad it works now 👍
Did Mike really just make a mistake when recounting the release dates of the Mega Drive?

@@RetroGamerBoy nah everyone in the dmv area who had the second genesis reference it as the 24 bit console
I love the Mega Drive
some things I think need to be added here
the model 1 Mega Drive is only capable of stereo sounds if you use the headphone jack
connected to a tv it will just have mono sound
the model 2 Mega Drive can do native stereo sound on a stereo capable CRT
If you don't have a CRT you can also go for clone systems like the Mega Retron HD which does some fantastic work for a budget clone
the Retron 5 is also a viable option as it plays Mega Drive games absolutely brilliantly except games that use the 9V pin in the original Mega Drive this encludes Virtua Racing and Sonic & Knuckles(the lockon funtion. the game itself plays great)
due to differences between the PAL and NTSC video format (PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz) some PAL games run slower than they would in NTSC this includes games like Hellfire and Mega Man the Wily Wars
the Retron 5 autofixes this issue and makes games run at their intened framerate
my personal favorite clone is the japanese 16Bit MD Plus which is a Nomad like clone just a bit larger than the original gameboy advance
it doesn't have stereo sound or a second controller port and unfortunatly only plays japanese Mega Drive games and games without region lockout but I still find the system cool because of the good screen quality and formfactor
when it comes to games you NEED to play streets of rage 2 just the best beat em up of the 16bit era with a soundtrack from the gods(which is also available on almost every sega compilation for modern systems)
if you want a different expirience from the SNES library of games I recomand most of the shooters on the mega drive like empire of steel, hellfire and zero wing
if you want something more simular to the SNES you can only grab some of the action RPGs for the Mega Drive like Solei and Story of Thor
there is no shortage of amazing games for your Mega Drive
GO GET EM!!!

I am a little bit confused about genesis and megadrive
Although i used to play megadrive a lot in my childhood.I am thinking that Can we play Genesis games on a MegaDrive Console and vice versa?
whats the difference between these two consoles?
The Genesis is technically different and has a larger catalogue games. There are a large number of games that are region locked and won't work on your MD / Genesis. The Genesis is NTSC 60hz and the MD is either JNTSC, PAL 50hz, or PALB. These different standards also affect your ability to play games across the hardware revisions. There are ways around this though.
Some right jobsworths here nit picking, leave the guy alone he delivered the goods jheeze
🤘😝🤘
Which games can you not play on the mark 1? and btw.. what the hell was the modem connector at the back for?
The Mega Drive could play online multiplayer games. Cyberball is a peer to peer game and can still be played online on the MD today. Some of the later releases and some of the new Mega Drive games don't run. I'll get a list together. It's only a few, like maybe 3.
I got the MD1 with the EXT port on the back. What games won't it play?
I can't remember, I'll need to go through and make a comprehensive list. There is not many 3 maybe 4 I've come across.
